Bike-urious visits RawHyde Adventures

  • RawHyde Adventures is the biggest name in adventure bike training, thanks in no small part to a partnership with BMW as an official off-road training facility. Could RawHyde work just as well with a fleet of Africa Twins or Super Teneres? Sure. But BMW fans (and anyone who watched Long Way Round) should be excited to learn how to conquer the world on RawHyde’s lineup of GSes.
    I first discovered RawHyde four years ago through a friend who was prepping for our trip to Alaska (www.bike-urious...) and after a couple of decades away from motorcycles, he wanted to get some introduction on how to handle his new GS. He took a couple of classes at RawHyde in advance and when we met up for the trip he couldn’t stop gushing about his experience. I made a mental note and saved it for a future version of myself that had more money because the classes weren’t cheap. Having gone through it now, I can attest that it’s a case of “you get what you pay for.”
    For a written story of our time at RawHyde, check out Bike-urious:

    Not PABATCO/Athena, Oregon, she rides more like the Vanishing Point movie citified version of a Barstow to Vegas race. Randsburg is a census-designated place in Kern County, California, United States, located 17 miles south of Ridgecrest, at an elevation of 3,504 feet...
    Meanwhile back at the Steel Horse Dude Ranch. We begin with a Level 1 trials-type large bike riding at the corral; pretty soon it's WFO fire road type riding; interstate access roads, power line and wind farm environs and the the culvert-type tunnel riding into the old abandoned mines nearby slows us down until finally we tumble weeds wet our noses at the White House Saloon before we roll 'em, roll 'em, and whip crack away again...
    Thrills and spills with lots of road rash as a Spaghetti Western inspired take on the Marshall Tucker Band's "Can't You See" plays us out with a "Sippin' Gin + Juice" harp twang outro. Post script: Could that be Sir Richard Branson at 7:10? he's made a new investment, eh. Out west beyond the plains and Rockies of North Amerika. No man's land. Can't you see, what this woman she done to me?

      Apparently I need to get you to summarize everything I do.
      Richard Branson's alter ego is none other than Owen Balduf - a dude worth knowing:

      Nahh but thanks, the editing would kill me, i couldn't make a deadline. Sir Balduf is a modern-day version of what i recall Rick Seiman "Super Hunky" the Dirt Bike magazine editor to be back in the "Maico breako" day.

    Congratulations for this video, very cool. Please help me with something that happens here in Brazil with the R1200GS, we have a big problem with the driveshaft, in some cases, the final driveshaft breaks, "cause it's rusty. This problem occurs in models after 2012, when the GS started to be LC. There's some kind of water infiltration in the shaft box that makes the driveshaft lose the quality and break. Did you've heard something like that in this motorcycle?

    Yah, you defintiely did more than just the "basic" class.Lot of those drills are from the advance course, they definitley gave you the special treatment,that big ramp is definitely advanced. Did someone die at ua-cam.com/video/GQMvrcoFrrg/v-deo.html, looks horrible
    ?! Did the lead rider abandon you on a group tour? There should be a leader and a sweep, thats common sense for any type of motorcycle tour, espeically offroad in desert conditions!!!

    • @Bikeurious
      @Bikeurious  6 років тому

      We did a combination of the classes - Level 1 on Saturday, Level 2 on Sunday, that's why you see drills from both courses. He was totally fine, it was an unfortunate case of forgetting to turn ABS back on after some time in the dirt.
      The lead/sweep riders did not abandon us. We intentionally split off to capture some drone footage at the Trona Pinnacles and misunderstood where we were supposed to meet up with the group afterwards. Owen was one of the best instructors/group ride leaders I've had the pleasure to ride with and learn from. 100% our fault in this case!

      ABS was off? Rider error for sure but instructor on a newbie tour should be on top of that. No excuse for that, that guy could have easily died. They need to spend less time pounding beers, being hungover and spend more time on teaching people the settings on the bike and reminding them when they go back on road to adjust settings, especially if it is a rental bike. If I am spending top dollar to learn to ride from a "BMW MC" approved academy, I want the smartest/sharpest instructors money can buy and I want them SOBER! Sounds like a lot of carelessness and they are opening themselves to a ton of liability, especially corporate. Its a grand old time until someone gets killed, seriously injured or has brain damage over some instructors who dont take their job serioulsy.

      We had an older gentleman injured on our last day of INTRO becuase the head instructor, who always had his head up his ass, took us down a trail that was clearly shut down (that is what we were told). Elderly guy flipped the bike ( I almost flipped as well as it was a very aggressive trail) and he was clearly injured. I had to help the injured elderly guy load his bike in his trailer with a bad limp, the lead instructor laughed it off at dinner as yah "there is going to be an instructor meeting tonight, I screwed up". Injured guy was about 70 on his old ass KLR, you know he didnt have much money but he spent alot to come to this class and who expected to learn from best if the best, CLEARLY THAT IS NOT THE CASE. I expect more from a BMW backed school and the majority of staff were professional, (with a few exceptions) but some really have no business behind a bike/in the hospitality segment or an offroad motorcycle instructor/tour guide... Looking at the vid, I rest my casel
