    Simon Pavey and his team have developed their own unique programme for each level of training, that has been constantly refined to provide the best learning experience and most fun.
    Our instructors are not just great off-road riders with years of experience either; we put as much emphasis on their teaching abilities, techniques and skill. Being a great rider counts for nothing if you can’t clearly convey your knowledge. We pride ourselves on our instructors and we are always learning and developing our own teaching abilities. We are one of the only schools in the world that has a dedicated instructor training program designed to help us all grow as off-road trainers and provide the best customer care, service and teaching environment we can.

    Excellent video and congrats to Chris Northover for showing us how it can and should be done. It really did kindle my interest in the GS as a bike that with practice, one could handle relatively easily despite it's apparent height, and weight.

    Brilliant. I have been riding bikes for 43 years and still learnt a thing or two. The Goldwing had a reverse gear, which was cheating. Where the GS is really good is in the low down weight. The Pan Euro was just the opposite. Great skills!

    First thing when picking up the mighty GS using handle bars is to put the side stand down first if the bike is on its right side. Another thing I taught the misses to throw herself under the bike in a crash to reduce damage to bike and when timed right get her to do a push up while under said bike to ease the lift and save your back.

But want to transition into Adventure. One time in my life I was some what of a ski bum and a lot of the same techniques used on ski slopes when you have fallen and need to get up (lean into the hill). Do you, or anyone you know, have these classes in Medellin Colombia or anywhere in Colombia? Thanks kindly great video!

      The GS isn't particularly tall and compresses a lot when you are on it. The Africa twin for example, with proper off road suspension is way taller.

    I have a question for the experienced. I was riding two weeks ago on a sport adventure bike (18’ Suzuki Vstrom 1000XT), 2 up with my wife. We came to a country road with a stream crossing over it. As it was only a few inches, downshifted to 2nd and was off the brakes. I didn’t take into account the algae growth on the asphalt road. We went down hard and slid for 30 meters! Unfortunately my wife is still hurting from that incident. When I went to upright the bike, I realized the algae and scum was so slippery, I could barely walk on it while slipping!
    Question, how would I pass this other than on my side, like this time? Would walking on the side while slowly using the bikes power to move it through the slick section be the best bet - like demonstrated on this video? I went back to the general area by myself and found a much shorter stream over the road crossing than the first one. I stopped the bike before and then slowly crossed with feet planted hard on the slick stuff and pulling up on the bars. Barely made it as the bike started to go sideways a bit and kept wanting to go down. It was as slippery as ice (but 95 degrees F out!)
    Thanks in advance for any thoughts - never faced this before in 35 years of riding motorcycles. Now we live in the hill country of central Texas and known I will face this again.

      Same happened to me twice in the mountains of Peru in the span of a week...first and then second time I went down after riding for over a year from northern colombia through ecuador and through Peru, this was on the return. It was a smooth channel that they constructed both times to allow runoff from the Mountain across the road. Had the same impact as if i was riding over a manhole cover. I discovered it was a layer of silt made worse with a growth of algae, just like you it turned it into what felt like ice with no control whatsoever. I was lucky i was wearing a good helmet the first time as I was going at a fair speed when I went down, otherwise I wouldn’t be here today, my helmet saved my life. Still got plenty of bruises but no broken bones thank god.
      Here’s what I can offer for advice based on my feedback from others and my own analysis. First I stuck around on the first and second to see what others were doing. Sure enough, riders locally knew only too well the danger and on the first channel I saw a rider slow down and navigate to the flattest part of the slope and slowly pass where some rubble had gathered to provide some grip. He maintained the bike perpendicular to the channels’ angle which was on a curve and held his body perpendicular to the earth, for example if he leaned his body with the bike angle there would be less contact for the tires. No increase or decrease of the throttle and no braking, your speed has to be approximated going in to get you through the other side. On the other channel a few days later the channel was totally level although the water was a bit deeper. I went in with all the above thoughts in my mind and went down. This time the current and the mud and silt was just to strong to be able to stay upright, even though it didn’t appear that bad. I stuck around and watched all the locals go through a natural part of the river bed runoff adjacent to the drainage channel. They knew from experience that entering on the slippery channel was a no no. So in summary, there’s a strategy to get across in many cases, but with all the skill in the world you will not get across if your tires have nothing to grip hold of and the stream or channel is so wide the momentum will not carry you through to the other side. Now I am super cautious with any stream or runoff channel I come across that’s looks like there may be mud or algae underneath and have no problem walking it first if in doubt and pick my best option and so far so good but for good or bad it’s made me dread those types of crossings. Btw, I consulted with a well known round the world biker on this and he told me what I wrote for the first fall remedy, as far a walking the bike across on a slippery channel I would be surprised if that is the best option but I suppose it depends on the grip you have with your feet to be able to stabilize your bike, with a super heavy bike i wouldn’t risk it but with a lighter bike maybe..

    • @Liberty4Ever
      @Liberty4Ever 3 роки тому +1

      In the BMW basic rider skills class, they teach how to walk the bike through water obstacles. Basically, walk beside it, idling in first gear, feathering the clutch. The advantages to walking it are lower overall center of gravity when the rider isn't on top of the bike, and a much larger multipoint contact area rather than trying to balance the bike over the narrow box between the two wheel contact patches. At low speed you don't have the gyroscopic stability of the spinning wheels so it needs to be balanced over the wheelbase. Ironically, it would be easier to get up some speed and coast straight across the slick algae bottomed stream, but the impact energy in a fall would be much greater so there might be broken bones instead of bruises if you crashed.

      @@Liberty4Ever, thank you for your response! I know walking it is not a guarantee to make it across the icy slippery algae covered cement, but you are sooo right, a slip and fall from walking is far different from the slam down force my wife took to her helmet! From the passenger seat in second gear! Thanks again for your thoughts, now I just have to find a way to get my wife back in the saddle. That day was our last ride as she understandably refuses to get back on any of our motorcycles :(

    literally only 0,1 Percent of the typical GS driver has ever tried out off road. Many of them can't even reach the ground with their feet when mounted.

      Have had one for a few years now, never expected to like it, but they are a great ride. Thrash it on the road. Thrash it off road. Has never bitten back on the black top, but have fallen off it and dropped it a few times off road, pick it up dust it off carryon. Bloody impressive really. Ride one and you will probably own it!
