I must have been about 11 when I used to play this. The idea of using stealth just never crossed my mind, it was all about machine guns and Molotovs. I assumed the cigarettes were just gimmicks to look authentic.
I have no idea how I played through this as a kid, replaying now and I suck so badly. In the past I always did stealth and tried non-lethal, but on the mission with the Gurkhas, I spent hours and in the end I stuck all the allies in the giant Buddha and went full warfare. Took ages as the Germans ran all over the map and one by one would enter the statue and get shot by everyone aiming at the door. XD
His "entrenching tool" or rather Spade Shovel is for digging a false ground hole trap. Set up correctly during a raid or incoming alerted Germans is to get them to run over it unaware it's there and plunge a soldier deep into the dirt unable to escape, good for choke points or luring setups. He has other tricks to such as the invisible tripwires which knocks units unconcious and can also be used to trigger a grenade by selecting the Sapper holding shift on the already created line and getting him to rig it upon crossing. All of these used together create devistating results and combined with the other tools at the Commandos disposal can eliminate large portions of the enemies very quickly.

On the xbox version you cant knock the 1st guy out, tie him up and carry him away before the other guy spots you...impossible...
