Me too. Same when I cut my head hair real short. There's a theory floating around that hair in general is an extension of the nervous system, so the longer it is the more relaxed and coordinated you will feel. Pretty interesting not sure if true or not.
If you need a beard to become more confident then you must have a very low self esteem. This proves my theory that growing beards is for stupid little boys with little love for themselves.
Shaved my 5 year beard last year and it lasted 2 weeks before I started growing it back. I'm back and my comfortable length which for me is around the 3 or 4 month length. I have learned so much from Beardbrand and I continue to learn from this great forum.

And ran away , and kept crying and saying it . Worst of all my parents said I needed a mustache . Obviously I needed my whiskers .
I once had to shave because my barber sneezed and gapped me down to the jawline. Turns out, I look awful with a goatee. In unrelated news, that barber is missing and there is a new job opening at that shop
All this talk of this nightmare, and wouldn't you know it, I dreamt last night that one of my best friends had my beard shaved with an electric razor!! I simply told her I'd never speak with her again and then the nightmare ended as I awoke.
Robert McMahon Agreed. I recently went from a full mane (long hair and a yeard) to just a beardstache. Went from looking like a chiseled hunk to a triple chinned walrus the first few days. Once the stubble grew back though, it looks a lot better. I'm going to rock a beardstache for a while now. But yes, full beards and more so full manes are in a league of their own. Nothing beats that look.
Not only does my beard keep my face warmer in winter, it keeps it cooler in summer. It protects the skin from the sun, and as the air blows through the hair, it cools the skin more than when my face is shaved because of the way the hair channels the air, not unlike how a forest cools the air by channeling the wind through the trees. That hair is there for a reason.

Agreed! I couldn't put my finger on why I enjoy the Beardbrand personalities so much and I think that's it. I mean, Greg is REALLY polished, so it's hard to relate to him at times, but seeing average looking guys like Eric and Jack on here just being confident with themselves, embracing their flaws, trying new styles and even completely shaving their beloved beards for the sake of re-growing with their community... It's great. As for Greg, even as polished as he is, he doesn't come off as a snob. He's also willing to point out his own flaws, and you can tell he just loves motivating guys to be the best they can be.
My facial hair is dark and grows quick. I used to shave a lot, then I just did a #1 scruff because I got fed up of shaving often. Decided to grow a beard. Best move. I have a small chin and the beard really gives me a look I like. I shave it off at least once a year tho. It’s fun growing it and experiences the different stages. I get back my full beard, about 5 inches at the longest point, in 4 months time.
I must be in the minority in that I really miss shaving. I have a beard that's at the 13 month mark right now, and I love it. All my shaving supplies feel real neglected though. A good antique double edge blade, a good brush and proper lathering techniques makes shaving a joy.
I did a complete shave about two years, after 9 years with a beard. Absolutely hated it! My teenage sons were in a bit of shock, didn't even know how to look at me. Was so glad after week two when I had that strong stubble.

I had a beard for five years (in various styles and lengths), before shaving it all off last month and I’ve gotta be honest; I absolutely loved it. Been letting it grow out again for the past week or so and eh, just doesn’t feel like me anymore 🤷🏻♂️
Got to say you made me laugh at how honest you were that shaving sucks! I have not shaved in almost 40 years and know if I did I would be saying exactly what you are now. However, as I said in another comment you do look at least 10 years younger and nothing wrong with that. Looking forward to your next beard journey.
This was fun! You reminded me of another reason I grew my beard. Although I always liked shaving, from the time I was a little boy imitating my father. But decades later I found no matter how I shaved I could not get a consistent look, with an early and itchy 5 o'clock shadow in places. When will you have a report from your dermatologist?
i have a beard but if you search in youtube "wet shaving" with a DE razor, decent immersive shaving cream or soap with a boar bristle shaving bush and some moisturising aftershave balm. that makes shaving actually enjoyable
Agree - I’m 4 weeks into a beard, having been a clean shaver my whole adult life (grew out a pretty lame ‘stache in college 25 years ago...), and I don’t want to go back to shaving. Freedom! (and bonus - much improved jawline and chin!)
I'm a guy that enjoys shaving. I don't generally like hair around my mouth. I grow a beard once in a while to try it out, but I always consider my "default" clean shaven. One thing I still have a hard time adjusting to is food in my facial hair. My "facial hair style" of choice has always been long sideburns. I would love to try growing a mustache like your's (before you shaved), but I don't know how I'd eat or drink my coffee with that much hair over my mouth! So I guess every guy is different. I'm at a 7-week beard currently, and seeing how far I can take this one before shaving again.
Use a DE safety razor instead of the cardridge systems, with a good shaving soap, applied with a brush will give you excellent shaves and you’ll stay smooth all day (ofcourse depending on how fast your beard grows).
Cool, merkur aren’t known to be very good blades though, but if you get very good shaves with them that’s what counts as everyone is differents. Their razors are excellent!
Hey Eric... Just another fan of yours.. Love your tips and I have started follow you and started my yeard journey 2 months ago!! And everything is going just fine and I am happy because I am 17 years old with full beard!! 🔥
In the last 5 years, I had to do a complete shave 3 times. Twice because I did a bad job trimming (it wasn't a pretty site). The first time, after a year and a half of beard growth, I had an accident. I normally go out with summer time clothing almost year round. This particular time it was chilly and raining. So, I put on a zip up jacket (don't beat me to the punch line). I made the mistake of looking down when I zipped up. Caught a nice chunk of beard in the middle of my chin. Left a noticeable gap. Tried to live with it, but couldn't and just did a complete shave. I hated all 3 times. Among the many benefits of having a beard, it covers up my perceived facial imperfections. I'm not going to list all the reasons I like my beard, because the list is too long ("Yeah? So is this comment.") There are cons to it as well, but the good out weighs the bad. TL;DR....I dislike my face when there's no facial hair.
Started growing a year ago, and haven’t looked back. I’ve only cut about an inch or two off and try to keep it trimmed, so I guess I’m steadily rocking maybe a 6 months beard. Comfortable, stylish and just awesome. Went surfing in cold water this morning, the beard is like a wetsuit for my face.
The quickly growing stubble is a peeve of mine. As someone who is bald and bearded, one of the reasons for preferring that look is the fact I can get away with having stubble on my head for a few days, and not on my face. An issue I personally have is I have a dark spot in my lower lip that has become irritated upon shaving. The beard helps avoid that. One weird thing that I do miss with shaving that is that I lost the dexterity for the old safety razors when I used to sport a chinstrap. After that, I only used it for keeping the neckline and back of my head looking sharp. I have to use cartridge razors to avoid making my head look as though I was in a bad fight.
Dude,,check out Bearbrand. They make stuff that helps your skin-for those who are no growers. Beard oil works on naked skin, beard soft moisturizer as well. But frankly, if you shave, you got to take care of that skin that gets peeled off with a razor. So, when you grow it back, give us a weekly look so those of us with the not perfect look can see you suffer with us. Peace and Thanks for the great products.
Growing out a beard with you guys, becomes a daily routine. It makes it fun. But when you put that same effort in shaving, it can also be fun. You soak the brush, get the straight razor out, rubbing that brush with soap all over your face and then try to get the smoothest result possible. But now I’m growing out the beard, so I’m in that phase now.
Hey there! Long time fan here. I love having a beard yet I love shaving. But I do prefer the beard. So I keep my beard for 11 months of the year and then 1 month in the year I shave a style of facial hair I want so I can take advantage of my double edge razor, shave cream, brush, aftershave and all that fun stuff. I figure I may as well have some fun with the beard. It's weird, but 2 of my hobbies are beards and shaving. But beards are better.
Just over a year ago since September 2018 I’ve been growing out my beard which started out as a stubble, then a month or so later it grew a lot and looks more noticeable. Fast forward to 10 months ago aka earlier this year my beard looked HUGE like I’m a homeless scruff with all that black hair on my face, but during the new season (March or April I believe?) I shaved ALL OF IT OFF. Today I now have a beard but it’s not the length as it was a year ago as I had it trimmed and shaped (shorter than usual) for a cruise holiday 2 months ago and I WISHED my beard would grow out super powerful fast! As of now I’m just cleaning my fast as per usual so my face and beard stay fresh and clean (except for food and drink still sapping itself in my beard on odd occasions lol)
I keep forgetting you guys are right here in Austin. Just up the road from me in San Antonio. It'll grow back in no time man. I shaved December 1st. And I regret it.
i agree with everything you said but I still think it was a brilliant move to shave off your beard. You never would have been able to contrast the two the way you did. Now you can speak with authority from both ends of the spectrum. I only started growing out my beard since I found your company in February '21 but for years before that I had kept my beard at the 5mm setting on the beard trimmer. So even though my memories of shaving with a razor are really fading, I do remember enough to know that I don't like it. And you're right about the stubble. There was a certain stubble length that my wife just didn't like. It would hurt to kiss me, just like you said.
I grew my beard out between 2018 and 2019 roughly 18 or 19 months worth of growth, the longest it had ever been. I've had a hard time finding a decent beard barber in the Cincinnati Ohio area, so I decided to shape my beard myself. Well that didn't turn out very good and I was left with just a well groomed goatee. Not happy. I now have 4 months worth of growth again and will not be shaving again any time soon. If anyone knows of a good beard barber in the Cincinnati area please let me know. It will be greatly appreciated !
Shaved off my 16+ month beard about 4 months ago and just starting to grow a beard back now. Couldn't stand shaving anymore, just the bottom neck to clean it up.
I had the same reaction about my chin being small when I shaved mine off 2 years ago. I forgot what my chin looked like and I freaked out cuz it was smaller than I remembered
Shaving does suck, that's exactly why i quit doing it, if my boss at work say's, " you need to shave and be clean cut " then i'll go get another job, but screw it, im not shaving any more. 👍.
I used to wax my beard because shaving always caused problems with my acne skin funny thing is to think how the big players made everybody think that having a clean baby face (aka buy my products and use they daily... and when they're gone, buy more) is the most sociably acceptable and more office work appropriate
I haven't shaved my face with a razor in years either. I don't rock a beard, but I just use clippers without a guard to get a very short stubble. I think it looks better than a clean shaven baby face. Also because I can't stand the skin irritation and ingrown hairs I would sometimes get.
Have you tried using Thayers Witch Hazel after you are done shaving? Also having a Double Edge safety razor with a good soap(Mitchell’s Woolfat, Proraso, etc.), reallly makes all the difference when shaving.
The ‘act’ of shaving FEELS great. Especially with a decent straight razor and some quality foam. The problem is it often doesn’t look manly and effects how you feel in general. That’s the battle I always have. The clean shaven look suits you though Eric. 👍🏻
I did have a beard and loved it, but I also needed a job asap and unfortunately was forced to shave. I feel like after a few months, you get over it, but it still sucks.
It’s weird but when you shave and suddenly look younger than your wife they genuinely feel threatened and seem to fear college girls throwing themselves at you or something. The ironic thing is they are often the ones who ask you to shave.
I totally agree dude.. Ive always had a beard.. Well at least for the last 10 or 12 years. I shaved it off a few times during that time and i instantly regret it
You should try traditional “old school” wet shaving! I used to hate shaving but in the summer when I rock the stache I love it!!! And I think it’s because traditional wet shaving is the way to go, when you look into the history of it!
You know what else sucks about losing the beard? The sun hasn't hit the front of your neck for over a year so it's pure white but the sides and back of your neck look nicely tanned. I'm doing similar on Jan 1st before I go on my first yeard journey, currently rocking a long goatee so might have the same problem.
I actually shaved my beard and moustache and without it, I looked naked. I am beginning to grow back the moustache but as for my mini beard maybe grow it out next year.
Couple points I want to make.. first off, I completely agree with you about the entire no beard thing... in my opinion beard > no beard. BUT I will say, you look damn good without a beard and even though It's hard to see yourself, be happy to know it could be MUCH worse lol. The other point I wanted to say is, the ONLY thing I miss about not having a beard is going to a barber and getting a strait razor shave and the full treatment with a hot towel and face massage. Before you start growing out again I highly suggest going somewhere and filming one of those for the channel and the experience. Then get back to growing brother!
Ok. Shaving doesn’t suck. It’s actually really enjoyable. I love a nice daily shave and my face is always the healthiest when I shave regularly. I have a full beard right now and I get constant complements. But I don’t love having hair all over my face. With a beard I deal with clogged pores and having to constantly eat my mustache. But there are positives to both.
I shave once every two weeks with a beard trimmer. Takes about 2 minutes. I probably have about a quarter of the hair follicles of Eric 😃 I could leave my beard 3 months and it would just look like stupidly spaced out long scraggly hairs. Thought by 40 I'd be growing a zz top by now but no 😭 I still love watching videos about beards though for some reason
This is going to sound counter intuitive to the whole point of this video but... Can you do a video where you compare foil shavers to rotary shavers for those of us who like to rock a clean shave or goatee (where one would shave the other areas off).
I dislike shaving as well .. I haven't shaved or gotten a haircut in 13 months .. I use coconut oil on my beard all the time.. I haven't tried anything else
I 100% agree that you look better with a beard, but I still really like seeing both your lips! 😂 I feel like so much more of your emotion is shown when your mustache isn't covering it
superb series of films Eric, thanks for making the sacrifice. You do indeed look much younger and therefore your bearded look enhances the beauty and youthfulness of your wife(hows that as a dig me outta the hole I dug line?) I really look forward to the moustache care video in particular and all the content to come, cheerio Del.
I’ve had different length beards over the years but nothing makes me feel better than a clean shave. I feel like a beard just hides your actual face. I think the only people who look better with a beard are people with weak chins/jawlines or who have brightly colored eyes with fair skin. Beards are a niche, most people should shave
everything you said is true I recently shaved. and I hated it. my gf wouldnt let me kiss her because it hurt her. also she said i look 12 now and my face gets cold now. like super cold.

Jeroen I use a Merkur with Merkur DE blades. I always get a really good shave. Having Mitchell’s Woolfat shave soap makes a good difference.
Hell ya man! Thank you for watching my videos and keep on growing!
I'm 4 weeks into the start of my beard journey...bit patchy....but hey such is life
Dude,,check out Bearbrand.
Remember it always grows back.
Justa Fungui
Yeah, at least it does.
Shaving is literally pointless. I hate being clean shaven, my beard is everything to me. I can’t go any other way.
Long beard ---> SUCKS
Shaving ---> SUCKS
Short beard ---> FOR THE WIN
Man you look different hope you can grow it back healthy and strong!
Love the products and had just shaved for similar reasons, so feeling your pain right now. Thanks for the video. I don’t feel so singled out now.
He looks so much better with a beard omg
Shaving does suck, that's exactly why i quit doing it, if my boss at work say's, " you need to shave and be clean cut " then i'll go get another job, but screw it, im not shaving any more. 👍.
You cracked me up with the where did my chin go comment.
I been getting the itch to shave 😱 maybe I'll just give it a good trim?
Anthony Deleon just a good trim
Shaving is the path to the dark side, don't do it!
@@mrsenor5233 ur wrong
Even if you take it down to 1/4 of an inch, it will still grow back way faster than if you shave....
Why did you shave and are you going to grow it all back?
I used to wax my beard because shaving always caused problems with my acne skin
funny thing is to think how the big players made everybody think that having a clean baby face (aka buy my products and use they daily... and when they're gone, buy more) is the most sociably acceptable and more office work appropriate
I haven't shaved my face with a razor in years either. I don't rock a beard, but I just use clippers without a guard to get a very short stubble. I think it looks better than a clean shaven baby face. Also because I can't stand the skin irritation and ingrown hairs I would sometimes get.
Hey Eric, just saw you on a commercial for Ship Station lol random
Have you tried using Thayers Witch Hazel after you are done shaving? Also having a Double Edge safety razor with a good soap(Mitchell’s Woolfat, Proraso, etc.), reallly makes all the difference when shaving.
The ‘act’ of shaving FEELS great. Especially with a decent straight razor and some quality foam. The problem is it often doesn’t look manly and effects how you feel in general. That’s the battle I always have. The clean shaven look suits you though Eric. 👍🏻
It's all cool. It grows back. Gang gang.
For the first time ever my beard is longer than Eric’s hahah
Kris Rob I think everyone who has a beard or even stubble has a beard longer than Eric’s
@@gaminglegend thats the joke...
Before shaving we must take a look at this one
If you had asked me, I would have warned you. 😬😬😬
I shaved it off a few times during that time and i instantly regret it
Totally agree with this. Just shaved cause my barber trimmed very unevenly. Regretting my decision now.
I prefer being clean shaven personally. I feel refreshed and just more confident.
Meh, it’s your choice
Me too. And growing beards became too mainstream.
Eduardo N Beards have been around for ages though, they’re not a new trend you know
I can’t even remember the last time I shaved. I feel for you.
Then get back to growing brother!
once you know what you doing and use nice materials and products, the process of shaving doesnt suck at all. but the final result sure does
Also. People do mention they can’t see my dimples or smile as much with a beard
Can you do updates on your beard growth journey
are u getting any bumps? shaving after this long?
Loved the video, funny as ever, keep up the good work👍🏾👌🏾🤙🏾🧔🏽
I shave once every two weeks with a beard trimmer. Takes about 2 minutes.
I probably have about a quarter of the hair follicles of Eric 😃
I could leave my beard 3 months and it would just look like stupidly spaced out long scraggly hairs.
Thought by 40 I'd be growing a zz top by now but no 😭
I still love watching videos about beards though for some reason
If I got a dollar every time Eric said “weird,” I’d be a millionaire
I'm with you! I got pressured to take mine off and my daughter cried when she seen me . Big mistake! Good news, it grows back! 🤘
😂 I feel like so much more of your emotion is shown when your mustache isn't covering it
So many good reason to evoid cutting off beard, I pretty understand it and I´ll take note of it. Greattings from S.L.P. México
Cold winter days of Austin at 50 ... Ha ha. Best line of the video!
Shaving does suck. I am growing my first REAL beard at 58.... Liking it!
superb series of films Eric, thanks for making the sacrifice.
