Thanks much for posting this. I was probably in bed at age 3 1/2 when this first was shown in 1959. But I bet my mother and father were watching this way back then. I don't believe I ever saw this episode. As a Jack Benny fan and I liked the "Dragnet" show a lot (the revival in '67), this was fun to watch. Jack Webb was very good. So was Mr. Benny. LOL
I have never seen Jack Webb in a comedy. Also, in later episodes the ads are integrated into the guest's songs. Who remembers the old laudromats? Those days were absolute comedy.
I saw Herb Vigran casted in many TV shows and movies. He was usually cast as a hotel clerk, bartender, or shopkeeper. He has a very distinctive voice, easily identifiable even when he's in a radio program.
The Harry Truman show wasn't in the syndicated re run packages because the lighting was so poor. (Jack later returned to Kansas City to do a fund raising benefit for the Truman Library). This episode was another that wasn't included in the re run packages. It's a great episode! Thanks for the upload!
The "Autolight" episode (filmed in the summer of 1953, and delayed because of MGM's injunction against Jack for filming the story without their permission) was telecast only once- on January 11, 1959.
The widow of Earl Derr Biggers- the creator of "Charlie Chan"- sued Jack, CBS and Lever Brothers for not asking permission to parody her late husband's character. I believe the case was settled out of court.
This episode aired about two years after the radio series ended, and less then four months after the TV series ended.. I think Jack was wanting to take a bit of a step away from the stoicism of Joe Friday, and to a certain extent revisit the comedy show he did out of San Francisco for a time in the mid-40s.. #mytwocents
Some may say this episode is a little not politically correct, but it's funny just the same. Don Wilson does a great China man. Recently, Trump said that Xi is Hollywood handsome. If that is so, bring back Charlie Chan with Xi in the starring role. North Korea's Kim Un Jong can play #1 son. I bet that Trump is yearning for a head of hair like Xi has.
Chinese-Americans were thrilled to be represented by the famous Jack Benny! Modern white female radicals indoctrinated with critical race theory are the only ones who could ever be offended by this. Not personally offended, mind you, but on behalf of hypothetical others.
We were kid's back then and those were better times. America had class back then, yes there were problems and things had to be rightend but I never ever would have believed that this country would be such a disgrace.
I kept expecting Benny to say "I'm thirsty", so Webb could reply, ""I'm Friday. Come over Saturday & we'll have a Sundae".
Jack Webb was one of the best guests I have seen on the show. He has great comedic timing. I love him on Dragnet as well.
Even though he doesn't sing or dance. Or play an instrument.
I agree! I can't believe I've never seen this episode! I love seeing Jack Webb's funny side! He was so young!
39 years old here. Jack benny was 65.@@SusanFromTexas204
@@FerdinandCesarano And since there aren't any soda crackers.
Benny is a classic.
Gotta love ol’ Blue Eyes.
This was one guest star I wasn't expecting to be on Jack Benny. Thanks for uploading.

Jack was on Sunday nights at 10pm(et) that season.
The Greats are all gone.
How I miss them.
We all have our turn.
Yes
I was fortunate to see Jack perform in the early 70s ... stood next to him while we gave him a standing ovation...what a treat
Thank you for posting this. I hadn't seen this one before! Made my day.
Jack Benny was an all time favorite comic of mine.I was also a big fan of Dragnet.
Oh wow. Two of the greats appear together!
Jack Webb, turns out, could be a great comedian.
Thank you for posting this. This is an episode...WITH COMMERCIALS AS THE SHOW AIRED¡¡¡
Wow. Have not seen this episode. Thanks for sharing.
Nice to see Jack not take himself so seriously on Benny's show. Classic television!

Look up the clapper caper.
I came here thinking this was an episode of the radio show, not the TV show. I'm going to "watch" it with my eyes closed. 😂
This is entertainment.
Herb Vigran, who appeared as "Mr. Johnson" [16:58], occasionally appeared on "DRAGNET" in the 1950's and '60s.
I saw Herb Vigran casted in many TV shows and movies. He was usually cast as a hotel clerk, bartender, or shopkeeper. He has a very distinctive voice, easily identifiable even when he's in a radio program.
Herb was a very prolific actor in radio. His voice was very distinctive.
One of my favorites!

Brilliant skit.
Wow hexachorophene hadn't heard that word sense the phisodrem thing in the early 70s
The broadcast date of this episode is November 1, 1959. It was Recorded October 18, 1959. --- January 1 is the Gaslight episode with Barbara Stanwyck.
Thank you Garth. I will fix it soon.
The "Autolight" episode (filmed in the summer of 1953, and delayed because of MGM's injunction against Jack for filming the story without their permission) was telecast only once- on January 11, 1959.
Gaslight was Jan 11. Someone confused 1/11/59 with 11/1/59.
Parts of the sketch sounds similar to the copper clapper sketch Mr. Webb did on the Carson Tonight Show some ten years later .
😂 brilliant 👏
Jack Webb also appeared on Milton Berles show.
My 2 favorite guests Jack had on as a guest was Jack Webb and Clint Walker, they dont make actors like them anymore.
JACK BENNY PROGRAM WITH JACK WEBB AGAIN

The radio show ended production in 1955; it was repeated on NBC for two seasons, through early 1957.
This definitely has Mr. Wang - adopted son Willy vibes
Jack Webb had a bad case of the giggles doing this skit, lol.
Because he *knows* how silly the sketch is.
@@fromthesidelines Exactly, lol. He and Jack Benny did this for laughs and clearly had fun doing it.
Even Jack couldn't keep a straight face at one point. 🤭

Does the the episode from 1958 exist where Dennis Day got a million dollars from Michael Anthony? I couldn't find it listed.
It does, but it's not in circulation.
Does anyone know who the three Asian singers are?
Florence Ahm, Frances Fong, and Kari Shindo
@@lauraleff thank you so much for the quick reply. I can’t wait to look them up. Thanks.
I didn't know Jack Web was 6 feet tall. Benny was 5'11.
The Chinese characterizations would never be allowed today.
Pity
If you thought that was good, google the clapper caper with Jack Webb and Johnny Carson. Toooo funny!
Terrible, and I am a fan!
Jack Webb was not an actor. He was literally the police acting and getting paid for it.
Jack Webb was literally never a police officer. Get it straight, mister.
Today we might say racist, but really not meant as mean. Just silly. Those times Charlie Chan jokes were innocent.
