MUDLARKING A TREASURE TROVE on the Thames Estuary + Dolls House Craft
Вставка
- Опубліковано 30 вер 2024
- This week we visit a part of the Thames Estuary which is very similar to the Thames foreshore. We were amazed to find so many amazing little metal treasures. We also collected some driftwood for a new mudlarking dolls house craft we make at the end :)
We have started a patreon page for anyone wishing to support us.
We also have a Ko-fi account, so if you wanted to support us by buying us a metaphorical cup of coffee it would be greatly appreciated xx

#MUDLARKING #CRAFT
Think the tag, as others have mentioned, has Welsh place names on it. Think it could be Cefnllys, Cefn-Coed, Cardiff, but no idea what it would relate to.
After a bit of Googling the tag could be from Henllys Road, Cyncoed, Cardiff.
Wow thank you for that! It came along way to end upon that foreshore!
@@MudlarkingWithKitCaboodlers glad to help amazing eh
I LOVE your long films...the longer, the better as far as I'm concerned. Your crafting skills never cease to amaze me, I have no idea how you come up with these things...just fabulous, Thank you
Thanks so much 😊
I think you need to go back to this beach. It has so many tiny interesting finds. I love the post office tags with its history.
Me too. It's so fascinating.
We will definitely go back :)
The doll’s house is so delightful. What a fantastic craft! Love the bed and the tiny mattress! ❤️
Taking the time to hyper-focus on a particular area sure paid off with some really interesting finds. Love what you do. Thanks for bringing me along on your journeys.
Thanks 👍
Dear Fleur and Kate,
Thank you for cleaning the area. Its So much plastic everywhere.
Nice finds. I love too see what you do with something.
Liebe Grüße Jette
Thanks so much Jette :)
I worked in a post office in the 1980's in South Africa. We still used lead seals for registered letters and insured parcels unto which a monetary value was attached. The normal letter and parcel bags were just closed with a aluminium seal. The lead seals were closed with seal punch pliers thingie and each post office had their own so the name on the seal is from the post office it came from not where it went to.
Ahh thank you for that :)
@@MudlarkingWithKitCaboodlers You've come a long way in a year ladies. Fleur, you mentioned that you were closing in on the 10,000 subscribers mark at or near the end of this video and I noticed that you're now at 24,000 subscribers. Well done and congratulations to you both. 🎉🎉🎊 🎊 The dollhouse bed you crafted is really cute.
Hello to you Kate & Fleur from a friend in North Carolina, USA.
The pointed decorated thing I think may have either been a dowl tool or a worn down punch used as one. .The engraving on the handle is to improve the grip. It’s small so I imagine it’s use would be for leather or even fine metalwork in jewellery or clockmaking..My guess anyway You got some interesting pieces today ..Love n Light 🥰
Thank you! :)
🇨🇦 It's so funny, I was so engrossed with this video, I literally caught myself reaching to pick something up lol😁. Oh yeah, moving my phone further away to put something into better focus didn't work either. I think it is broken. 😀 Your videos are perfect it's just I have old eyes and automatically hold things I can't see further away so I can focus on them. The bed is super cute by the way.
Me toooo! I find myself waving at them to say hello. I’ve been confined in the house too long. As we say in the South... ‘blessss myyy hearttt’ 😊
We love that! It is wonderful that you feel there as we try very hard to make it an immersive experience :)
The tag with “Co ed”
It looks like “Co-D” as in “Company D” and “diff” would possibly be “Cardiff”
I think the military dog type piece of metal is a Welsh address.
The ‘coed’ part means ‘wood’ or ‘trees’ in welsh and is a very commonly used as part of a village name (as in Betws-y-coed). It is pronounced coyd. The ‘diff’ is Cardiff which leaves the first line ‘NLLYE’ which could be the end of a street name, house name or a surname.
Totally agree
I have pinned a comment which could be the address in Welsh :)
Love your finds , and the little bed you made brought a tear to my eyes in fond memories of my wonderful dad who made mine from scrap wood he had , in his shed , the dollies where made Fromm wooden pegs with scrap fabric wrapped around them from cloth, thank you ladies for evoking fond memories x
How lovely x x
I love that memory. it is lovely :)
I agree :)
The doll bed is adorable. It made me think of the Disney movie, Bed knobs and Broomsticks.
I was thinking the sharp mystery find is a tool to make holes in leather for belts.
I agree! Or at least a drill bit of some description
I was just thinking that you could use a found toothpaste top for a neck for one of your dolls such an awesome adventure gorgeous finds
Snap Heidi, I thought exactly the same thing!
I thought that too
I was actually thinking of a tiny hat 👒
I had the same idea ! It looks like the neck and shoulders of a woman !
That is a great idea! :)
Lucky Burnie has a wonderful new bed. When you were holding him over it he looked like he wanted to jump on it and I could imagine Bitsy yelling, "Burnie! Stop bouncing on the bed! You're going to break it!"
Hahahaha love it :)
At 50:00, it might be a broken buttonhooks. thebuttonhooksociety website shows similar shapes and patterns. The opalescent red glass could become a nice pendant, what do you think? Thank you for these awesome video and crafting! (I thought you were making a fireplace, not a bed!)
Haha you have given me an idea now about the fireplace :)
My best guess for the pointy item is that its an Awl (not an Owl lol) they are used for making holes in leather or sail cloth
amongst other things, but one can imagine the odd sail needing repair on the Thames.
Absolutely adore that bed, can I have one full size please lol
So interesting the stories behind the finds today :)
I think you are right an Awl is the consensus. Love the romantic idea of it repairing sails! A full size drift wood bed would be something haha :)
Im wondering if the sharp decorated item is an Awl for leather work. And I love the bed, it is amazing!!
Oh those mushrooms are so precious! I love them, they are perfect! This was another lovely video, so many cool finds and just the most relaxing vibe, which I really value. The owl was my favourite, I have to say, but there are so many lovely things, even the mysterious ones!
Thank you so much!
That tag sounds welsh. Could be Cardiff.
I think the long pointy thing is a bradawl.its for starting off a hole for a nail i have one that looks very much like that .but not as decorative. The dolls house bed it adorable it looks good enough to sleep on .very artistic both of you.
I have one of those bottles with the red lid (identical). Found it on a 1950's dump site. I hope it is older, as you say, Art Deco.
It does look very Deco to me :)
Hello friends, from Canada.
That doll bed is adorable ♥️♥️♥️
agreed ❤❤❤
Could that be an ice pick. Or part of a dart
The bed is great and the history of the P.O. Seals was great. My thoughts the longer the better I love watching your adventures!!
Hi lovely ladies, as always, loved the video. Lovely bed for Bernie, and the longer the video the better. Keep well and safe. Much love Sue Gosling Adelaide south Australia
That fancy metal thingie at 48:56 would make a splendid door knob plate for a doll's house door. It already has holes at each corner to screw it down. Lucky dolls!
Could be a piece of hematite in there, it looked silvery from here...
That is a lovely idea :)
50:19 It looks like it is an awl used for leather work. It looks as if the handle part has been broken, I can barely see the end at 50:31 but if you Google "Antique decorative awls used for leather work" you will see a couple there with that type of patterns on them. It is an early one I would think 1700s maybe. Cobbler's and leather works used them a lot.
Thank you I think you are correct :)
You might look up "military dog tag abbreviations" for different countries in WWI and WWII to see if any of it matches your tag.
I have pinned a comment which might be the address which is amazing :)
50:43 I think this is an awl to work with leather
YES, totally agree. Good call!
Love the longer videos! Thanks for sharing.
Totally agree
You could use some of the metal pieces to make some *Steam Punk* jewellry.
Or a new genre "stream punk" ....sorry couldn't help myself
Great video! Blessings to you
Enjoyed the film and enjoyed the length. Loved the bed. I’m sure Bob likes being dressed.
This is a wonderful video. Thank you.☮️🇨🇦
Your mystery find that is pointed on the end and highly decorated might be a Roman stylus.
That makes sense. And I’ve seen ancient bronze Roman coins. That’s bronze. That’s why it survived all this time.
That would be amazing :)
Oh that little bed is adorable! Great video Ladies, how you saw those tiny finds is beyond me. On the length of your videos I have no problem, keep them coming, I could watch all day long! 😀 x
Thank you so much Amanda, it is fun looking for tiny things :)
I just love your videos. ❤️ Thank you very much. Greetings from germany 🌹
Good morning from southeast Ga
The metal piece you found that looks like an "8" That looks like the piece from a garter belt to hold up the silk stockings.
It amazes me that we find such similar things sometimes! Even though we live so far away from each other! Just makes me love your videos even more! 😍
Wonderful finds and extraordinary bed build. I adore the mushrooms Kate, and the mattress Fleur.
Woodworking skills are good, nothing like driftwood from the beach. The owl was a wonderful find Fleur. That new beach area worth another visit. Sue and Ian, Australia
Why are so many beads found ?
Oh my I am in awe over the bed. Such amazing imagination brought to life. I can’t do that 😂 but I enjoy seeing others that can.
Longer videos are great! The more I see of you lovely ladies the better.
So glad you got out and about :) So looking forward to this video for tomorrow night - a little treat to begin the week with! Take care, Nicole & Craig
We are so happy to be further afield now x
Such a sweet little bed ! Love the mattress and pillow !
What an adorable little bed. Well done you clever clogs.
Great video! Very cool findings!
In love with the bed, especially the toadstools and bed knobs! Is the pointy thing hollow? I have some very fine crochet hooks, almost like sewing needles and some have ornate pointed covers to protect the needle ends(once sat on one when I was nursing on nights, we were having a rare quiet time (you never said the "Q" word) and I left my bag of crochet (plus needle) on the chair when briefly called away. You may guess the rest, I sank heavily onto the said chair and was impaled by the crochet hook)! I was mortified to have to attend our emergency dept to have it removed and get a tetanus jab! All that said I think the pointy thing is too pointy to be a crochet hook cover - could be a sewing awl?? June x
Ow! That sounds very very painful! :)
Kate, I really appreciate your vision for crafting!!! I find it such a blessing to relax to!!!! So many wonderful unique treasures today!!!!
Love your videos. The bed is wonderful.
Your imagination astounds me. I just loooove watching you both at work. XX
We live just a few miles away from Kilmarnock and we've never been lucky enough to find an old Walkers bottle or seal yet. Good find!
Oh, and I love the little bed!
It is a very interesting seal, thank you :)
I live in kilmarnock
@@woozul1 we're in Galston 😊
@@oncelovedtreasures6136 that's quite close.
I don't think the 2nd dogtag says coed, I thin its an N-CO, N Company perhaps... NLLY could be part of his surname, DIFF may be the end of Cardiff?.. all that said i've never seen a dogtag like that, in WW1 British troops had a cardboard dogtag but some officers had metal ones made, they always included the mans serial number too, and I don't think yours has any numbers, but then again, its not whole... interesting :)
It is interesting I have pinned a comment with the possible address.I would love to know if not a dog tag what else it could be and why it ended up on the Thames Estuary :)
Oh the little green glass circle, rim of a bottle, would make a perfect rim for a wall clock or picture frame for the doll's house., don't ya think? Ladies, I'm seeing agates, jasper and small fossilized sea creatures. Not positive, but the sharp ended metal piece that Fleur found at around fifteen minutes looked to be kinda ancient, Roman? There sure was an impressive amount of tiny mysterious finds, as is usually the case on the Thames. Speaking of small things, the bedstead with all of the trimmings, that you Ladies built was too precious for words. You two could literally have a shop on line, selling miniature items exclusively. You could call it {Bitsy's Minis} or?
Fleur and Kate, Thank you for being the Lovely Ladies you are. Heart and Hugs 2 U + pets and scratches for Sunny. : )
Thank you so much! We really need to start looking more at the stones you are right. I think we just sort of hone in on specific things :)
Such wonderful things 💖
How fun. You found such interesting things and the doll bed is precious.
I have an idea... collect round flat stones and make faces with them using your stash of finds. You could also paint faces on them, glue ribbon for a hanger and wala there you are a cute decoration.
Thank you for the outing it was nice getting out for a while. 😊
Stay Blessed, Safe and Healthy
Grandma from Florida, USA
That is a lovely idea :)
Fleur and Kate another awesome day for finds thanks for sharing ,love your little bed ,so much imaginative talent, thanks for picking up the garbage, stay safe ❤️from Ontario Canada 🍄💕👍👍👍
Thanks so much 😊
As for the mystery object... it could be a dentists tool, a pick lock pick, or also a spike to clean gunpowder from a touch hole on a Musket.
The mystery item It was used to Help guide the ribbon through the women's Corsets It Made Easier and Quicker That's what the mystery item is
Oh i love that idea :)
Lovely as always! And I love how you two do the double filming for different perspectives! A treasure trove of metal bits and bobs :)
Thank you :)
I'm leaving on a 3 day beach trip tomorrow. I have a gift to throw into the ocean to appease the mud larking gods. You two found some very fun finds. Missed seeing Sunny cat. Hugs, Diana.
That is a good idea perhaps we should do that :)
I love your trove of teeny tiny treasures. 🔬🔎
you ladies need to invest in a jewelers loop
The decorative metal piece Fleur found with the little glass stone, looks to be a ornament that may have been sewn on a Victorian fancy silk slipper or child's silk slipper? It has four holes on it, one on each corner which means it would have been sewn onto fabric of some sort.
I imagine that slipper would have been very beautiful! :)
I just got an idea about the broken bottle necks. If you could cut them and make glass rings of them and sell on your Etsy.
Love Made
That is a lovely idea! :)
Love Love Love this video!! All the wonderful tiny finds and the awesome bed for the dolls! Thank you for sharing👍🦉🍄👍
That would have been a nice stoneware spool insulator when whole at 1:31. I messaged you guys on instagram by the way! I found some porcelain dolls in my shed that need a new home.
Lovely video. Love the dolls bed, good job!😀
Awesome finds...The bed is brilliant At 1st i thought you were making a mini puppet theatre..wow wouldnt that be something 😉.
Your little toothpaste top looks like a neck and shoulders...like a collar Or maybe some Armour lol. I love tue long videos the longer the better for me😊
Thank you :)
such a fun adventure and I love that you are giving all those forgotten things a new life. wonderful!
Lovely finds, so much history in miniature. Glad you have found the little finds box useful. Have a good week.
The box has been very useful! Thank you so much :)
Look forward to your videos each week. Love mudlarking with you.
The jet button seemed to have a V on it, maybe a V for Victoria??🤔👏👏👍🇦🇺
I must look at it again :)
Loved watching this ..great finds and on that bed is adorable :)
So adorable!!! I love the little dollhouse bed. It is just right for the dump dolls. You had some lovely finds on this outing, thanks for sharing!
Sometimes it takes me two or three (or more) days to find the uninterrupted time to just...sit and watch the entire video, all the way through (which is really the best way to view it). A lovely way to invest the time! Remember to Subscribe, viewers!
You girls are so funny. 😂
Awesome finds guys and amazing crafting, i love the bed and the mattress looks so cute with the pillow. Are things getting better over there? Can you move around more? God bless and stay safe and well 🙏🙏🙏🙏🥰🥰🥰🥰👏👏👏👏👍👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️❤️
Things are easing up here, thanks to high vaccinations, over half the population
We can travel a little further a field now which is wonderful thank you :)
New subscriber! Love your doll house! Love your videos ! ❤️❤️❤️
Welcome and thank you very much :)
The pointed item may be the remains of a stylus for writing on wax tablets that’s lost the flat end for resurfacing the wax after use.
Oh that is an interesting idea! :)
Love the bed, even if running children would run the risk of getting tetanus if it were real. Your doll’s house is splendiferous!!
:) :) :)
Pure genius as always x
Love longer videos, more to enjoy, your both adorable.
Thank you Paddy :)
High girls your bed was absolutely incredible it's so adorable. thank you for taking me along!
The metal tube looks like it could be end of a shoe lace.
I adore your channel and everything you collect and create, thank you two lovely ladies you are both marvellous. Love and Light 🤗

Wow, I think the bed you made is a wonderful piece of art!.
That tiny bed!
I admire how you girls upgrade these discarded items into such unique and beautiful objects. I enjoy watching you so much. Rock crazy as I am I do feel a bit sad when you pass up some of the beautiful stones but I feel very happy when you notice the beauty of one or two and take them. I think that tiny beautiful stones would add an element of nature to you crafts. Stay safe and keep hunting.
Totally agree
We really must learn more about the stones! There is always so much to take in it is sometimes hard to see the wood for the trees :)
That sharp point that was thought to have been a dart, could be a drafting compass point
Oh that is an interesting idea :)
Love it👍🏻❤️
