    I think the Empire learned the lessons of the Clone Wars too well, in a match of carriers, the Republic would always be outmatched in terms of fighters and bombers by the sheer numbers and easy replacements of the CIS droids ships. The best strategy would be to knock out the carrier ships and then retreat and wait for the droid fighters to run out of fuel, and using a ship like an Imperial Class would be perfect for that job. Unfortunately the next opponent they fought in the rebel alliance was the entire opposite of what the Star Destroyers were built for.

    • @CedarHunt

      That's genuinely the best argument I've heard yet. The Empire is conducting a massive military build up based on the assumption that the next war will be fought along the same battle lines as the last one which has been a common mistake made by militaries throughout history. The Empire was perfectly designed to defeat the CIS in an open war that never came.

    @gregdomenico1891 4 роки тому +32

    Why? Because they were already being replaced in Republic service by the more capable Victory class of Star Destroyer. The Victory had less fighters, but better shielding, more Turbo laser's, and better point defense.
    When the Empire designed the Imperial class, it wasn't just based around the Tarkin Doctrine. The ship itself replaces three other classes; the Victory in the anti ship role, the Venator in the carrier role, and the Acclimator in the Assault role.

    • @zynarax
      @zynarax 4 роки тому +4

      But the imperial class only did one of these well, anti ship. In all other roles it really kinda sucks, for example the ISD1 holds 76 fighters, the venator holds 400 so as a better carrier it fails on all accounts. Same goes for the assault role the ISD1 can't enter atmosphere and deploy its troops, the acclimator can and even in space it can deploy its troops faster. And then in the anti ship role where the ISD1 excels it won't be very useful since no one really has large ships anymore except the empire and the ISD is terrible against star fighters which is mostly what it would be fighting. So it doesn't really replace the other classes at all in actuality. And to make it worse a single venator with a full fighter&bomber compliment would absolutely destroy an ISD1 because before the ISD can even get in range the ridiculous amount of fighters and bombers would probably be able to take out the shields and engines.
      TLDR the ISD is good in theory but in practice is a significant step back.

    • @gregdomenico1891
      @gregdomenico1891 4 роки тому +4

      @@zynarax The Venator's amount of fighters were designed to deal with the droid fighter swarms. Post Clone Wars, ( up to the height of the Rebellion, which was 20 years later), there was absolutely no need for that many fighters. During those years, there wasn't that many full blown planetary assaults, so the Acclimator was useless. Toss in the Victory, now you have 3 ship types, that you have to crew and maintain, in a period that you don't need them.
      The ISD could carry 20 AT-AT, 30 AT-ST's, 15 Troop Transports, and up to 9,700 troops. That amount right there is enough to put the Acclimator out of business. As for entering atmosphere, I distinctly Remember seeing a ISD in atmosphere in Rogue 1. The preferred method is to use Assault shuttles, but they can get closer if necessary. Don't get me wrong, the ISD does have faults, the lack of point defense being a major one, but the movies don't do the ship any justice. At least in the books, they remember that the thing also mounts 60 ION CANNONS! And 1 of the major losses to Rebel fighters was more bad tactics than bad ship design. Early in the Rebellion, having a simple Combat Space Patrol out would have saved alot of ships.

      @@KaiserMattTygore927 couple of points of contention; The Venators in the timeline were scrapped 5 years after the end of the Clone wars ; ten years before the Rebellion even got really going. So yes, the ISD predates the Rebellion. And they were fine during that period.
      As for during the Rebellion, until the later major scale fleet actions, having a Carrier heavy fleet only wouldn't have helped the Empire.
      And here's the reason why; in the beginning, the Rebels hit lightly defended convoys and bases. Their advantage was having hyperdrive equipped fighters; they could pick the time and place of the attack. Even if the Empire had a Carrier, say a modified Venator, the Rebels still have a major advantage. Even though technically the Venator has the fighter advantage in numbers, only a couple of fighters are actually in space , with maybe a squadron on 5 minutes ready standby. Most people (especially Sci-fi UA-camrs) just look at the numbers that it carries, and think it can launch them at a moment's notice. That's not the way Carrier op's work. Unless directly in combat, only a fraction of them are manned. You can't keep pilots in them 24/7. Also, it takes time to launch them all. The only way they would have been devastating against the Rebellion, would have been if the Carrier was paired up with a Interdictor, and some Lancers. That way, the Carrier would have time to bring it's full compliment to bare, before the Rebels jumped back out. What killed most ISD's was their lack of point defense; they couldn't hold off the Rebel fighters long enough to get their own fighters off. ( Sorry about the long reply, Carrier's are great, but they do have limitations).

      It would also make sense that the Venator was a rushed stop gap measure for the clone wars. Built quickly and in large numbers but only expected to have a very short service life. Take real world emergency ship building programs like the liberty ships, flower class corvettes, various escort carriers, ect. They were all built quickly and in large numbers but following the end of ww2 the majority were scrapped with some being sold off or converted to other roles. ISDs were primarily orbital siege platforms that also happened to be good at taking down other capital ships as well. They were mainly used for invasions and orbital bombardment, with TIE Fighters pretty much there to defend the Star Destroyer from fighters that could threaten the command tower. During the early Imperial Era when the Tarkin Doctrine developed, there wasnt much need for efficient ship-to-ship pitched battles like the sort in the Clone Wars, since the Rebellion mostly just had fighters, light frigates, small cruisers, and corvettes, relying on hit-and-run tactics. TIEs kept the fighters at bay, and the Star Destroyer could pick off the light cruisers and frigates. Aside from a few Mon Calamari cruisers (which were defensively beastly, but lacked the offensive power to threaten an ISD directly), and a Lucrehulk or two, the Rebel fleet didnt have much. The pre-Yavin Imperial Navy had far more use for orbital siege platforms/mobile bases than they did for a naval carrier

With groups that relied on smaller hyperspace capable vessels, someone who could field a venator would be better served using it as a mobile, or semi mobile base of operations safely tucked away out of the action. It can move around, so authorities never know where they're operating from, Pirates could hit up a venator for rest repairs and refueling, get their forces organized, Hop a few systems over in hyperspace, hit a few choice vessels, and then hop back. There was a good 20yrs from the end of the clonewars to the start of the orginal trilogy and the Venator was almost 10yrs old at the time meaning the the class was almost 30yrs old by then. Given that it would of made more sense to have them phased out over that 20yr period rather all at once do to not only a shift in doctrine but on the rational it would be to hard and costly to not only update their 30yr old technology but to update them to fit in with the Tarkin Doctrine.

    Simple Answer: Because George Lucas haven't thought about that back in 1970s.
    Long Answer: The Empire started to implement Tarkin's doctriner, so Venator is not the right ship for the job. At the mean time, Rebellion directed most of the funding to procure X Wings and A Wings, so they have no money left to buy Venators, in the end they had to resort to converted civilian vessels like MC80.
    Also the Starhawk battlecruisers during and after the Galactic Civil War are rumoured to be another Hammerhead variant, however some fans speculated that the Starhawks are a more advanced version of Venator made of ISD parts, maybe Ep9 will reveal what Starhawk really is.

Regardless of their reputation as Jedi Cruisers, the Venator's could have been a powerful component in any Imperial fleet formation. The number of TIE's they could carry vastly outmatches the Imperial-class, and would have been perfect lead ships for missions that didn't require Star Destroyers, but needed more oomph than the Arquitens-class.

    The Venator was a multifunction carrier type ship. It's main purpose within the Republic fleet, was the transport of troops into hot zones, since transport ships couldn't handle the heavy fire. It was dismissed within the Empire for various reasons, because it did not fit the Empire's idea of a fleet(essentially fear). Because the empire saw no need for heavy carriers since most planets were already under their control and because Venators were known as Jedi capital ships. Which did, in some ways, weaken the fleet quite a bit. Eckard did a video on this a while back with tons of detail.

A mobile base that can resupply and repair hordes of starfighters capable of FTL travel on their own, never getting anywhere NEAR striking distance of Imperial craft with none of the disadvantages of a fixed sortie base? It'd be a ghost in the darkness, and even one would be a serious threat. The biggest issue the Rebels would have would simply be finding enough starfighters to fill her up, and figuring out flight path patterns for her that would allow starfighters a way to find their way home while minimizing the chance of the Imperials cracking it.

      That would have been a disaster for the empire. A Venator could function as a mobile strike base. Jump out of hyperspace launch a strike group then the fighters jump to their Target while the Venator jumps to a pre-planned recovery point the fighters complete the mission and jump to the pre-planned recovery point land and then Ventator jumps away.

    I've had to do stuff like this in games like Stellaris. In my current playthrough, I had amassed dozens of large starbases for defense and trade; but after massive expansion from winning several wars, they became money pits. Despite everything I had invested into them, they had to go because my empire was experiencing an economic depression. With them gone, I was able to invest my out of depression, into an economic golden age. Which was later followed by an age of rampant piracy; but that's another story.

    In real history the British Empire scrapped every single battleship it ever made :'( *Obi Wan Voice* "Not even the -Younglings- greatest such as HMS Warspite and HMS Vanguard survived"
    The UK should have kept at least one :( all we kept was a cruiser (HMS Belfast) and a few smaller ships.

      Battleships are out of date in modern times. At least as we define them. No amount of practical armor can defend against a sufficient number of warplanes (e.g. the Yamato during operation Ten-go, where the largest battleship in history with 150+ AA guns and it's escorts were sunk at the cost of only a few airplanes), or nowadays missiles. Even active defenses are finite in what they can shoot down if the enemy saturates them with enough missiles. And it doesn't take too many missiles to put even heavily armored ships out of commission. For now the best strategy seems to be to split up firepower between multiple ships so if one is lost ten more can still fight. At least until someone invents a game-changer in terms of defense.

    The Venator could been use as a heavy figther carrier use as a complement of the Star Destroyers. The large Hangar of a Venator could carry a lot more figthers and with the short frame of the Tie's series it could provide several wings of figthers a bombers much easly to support a group of Star Destroyers.

    I think the main reason is it was a Rushed experimental design. That paved the way more long standing Star Destroyers. Like Britain’s ww2 air craft carriers which were designed to be easy to build and put out in large numbers but with short service life’s.

    1:10 I think this here is really the heart of it - it's a racket. The Venator was phased out to give shipbuilding contracts to more favored corporations, and further militarize the Imperial economy.
    9:30 That doesn't necessarily make sense, a light, cheap fighter would seem to be the kind of thing you'd want in a bulk carrier. A Venator could also carry enough fighters to have a respectable wing of specialist craft (e.g. TIE Bombers)

  • @matthewmohri9990

    All I can think of when I see the venator is this guy name is Shaq xpgamers who has a channel who plays a lot of Star Wars Empire at War Awakening of the Rebellion. And because his channel is so popular one of the mods made The Liberation which is a modified version of the venator with a giant snipe Cannon at the front. However it's still uses the z-95 in the arc 170. But it's modification with that snipe Cannon plus few more of the things makes it a very good aircraft carrier + effective in a fight. when that snipe Cannon recharges does a lot of damage. It would have been nice if the Rebellion would have been able to pick up and steal more of these crafts and modified them to be more effective like the liberation with a snipe cannon at the front.

  • @geauxburns
    @geauxburns 4 роки тому

    Another plausible reason for phasing out the Venator; battles during The Clone War most likely led to those ships taking a lot of damage, which meant being put in dry dock for a period of time with costly repair bills The Empire could spend Credits on having newer Star Destroyers built instead. Modern day Aircraft Carriers have been in service longer because they haven't been used in a Fleet vs Fleet type Naval War; whereas the CW would have taken a toll on the Venators that weren't destroyed by the CIS.

    I also believe the shift to the Imperial SD was supposed to discourage desertion. A smaller complement of fighters also meant fewer ships capable of being stolen to desert to Separatist worlds (later Rebel worlds) or kamikaze into the bridge. It also means more control over the crew. This doesn't mean it's impossible to desert via TIE Fighter, just downright dangerous to do so.

  • @ManWithBeard1990

    I imagine they scrap them for spare parts, to keep the operational ones alive for longer. You know, with KDY being busy with the Imperial class star destroyer they likely dropped support for the Venator pretty quickly, no longer producing replacement parts for it. Maintenance crews would get by with existing stock for a while but after that those bits would need to be scavenged from wrecking yards like Bracca.
