  • A tour of one of the first projects I was really proud of, an open tote toolbox. I like this design because of it's function. Easy to make for beginners as this example was made by a beginner (me many years ago). Used only bought material so no thickness planing or resizing.
I'd always planned on building a cabinet that would hold less used tools that'd go under this tote and roll around the shop. Maybe someday....
For any woodworking techniques video's for joinery you see here I suggest visiting my channel and searching those terms. I have a multitude of videos on Dovetails and Bridle joinery plus the other techniques you'd use.

I can envision several custom toolboxes. One for small hand tool woodworking projects, one for woodturning, and one for "around the house". Organization is key. Thanks for the inspiration.

The use of a tool tote in a shop is so underrated. Sure tool walls look cool, and for some tools it makes sense, but for small hand tools like this a tote is the way. I think making your own tool box is worth the effort, it’s a lost art and so many people miss the benefits of the not only having one fit specifically to their tools, but also the experience of building it in general. Bravo my man

I want to make a diagonal hand tool tote with quick action, I saw one on Pinterest that a luthier/box maker built that's like what I was thinking. There doesn't seem to be much on UA-cam yours was the closest. My goal is for speed and comfort so I'll use it while I'm working, not before and after a job to keep my bench more open when working.

I would like to see the chainsaw box. I end up using a small duffel bag for all of the stuff, but would like a well built box.

A toothed plane blade can be used to control the depth of cuts on thin materials such as acoustic guitar soundboards.

The four corner posts also look strong enough to be a small, board rest, similar to a Japanese saw horse.

Enjoy all of your videos. Did not understand some of the explanation of the box especially how the legs were made but no matter, the concept of what you built early on is the point of the video and provides inspiration. Also shows it was not perfect as you were new. Really appreciate all the knowledge you share.

I like toolboxes. My work area has high humidity & steps down so I only store tools there which will not rust and carry tools in. This in a ‘basic’ tool box and other boxes that I fill as need arises of special tools - at the start of working. No going back and forth. My ‘basic’ box is 28 inches long by 9 wide, bearable in one hand & weighing no more than 25 lb / 12 Kilo. This has low sides to avoid over filling. Made of pine & ply to keep weight down. Toolboxes for planes are smaller as they are heavier, so may contain only two or three planes. With any toolbox weight is very important.

I love this video. Yes. Doing this does help. Especially your explanation on how your design and needs changed. That evolution is fascinating. But I do agree, we do not need to see every step. Cutting a dovetail has been done too often. Even just replacing one of the sides, how to select the tools, and determine the layout would be insightful.

    1. Great video. 2. Yes. I'd like to see how you go about making a mobile tool box that incorporates your essentials. I've been thinking of making one for my wood work club. My bag is getting too heavy so I want to make something that I can lift out of the boot, wheel over to my work bench and have all my essentials in. And I'm thinking to incorporate a shooting board/bench hook as a lid. Hope that helps. Thank you

This is something I need to have. I have an 8' x 8' shed for a shop. However I have a paver patio outside of it that I have an outside workbench. So to use that I am constantly carrying tools in and out. Would enjoy seeing an updated build for sure. Thanks for the inspiration.

I’m an electrician. Woodworking is my hobby and have been watching you for a while now. Actually I’ve been considering making a wooden tool tote customized similar to what you did but for electrical tools. There’s companies out there making them with t fabrics, plastics and now leather. I like the idea you have total customization. This may be off topic. But I would like to make some things like the tops you make to hand out to my customers. So if you can inspire us to to make things to give away that are fairly simple to make to be given away to people not just at Christmas time.

From reading the comments I got the idea of a series of videos. A video on just sorting through tools and pairing down to a concise set for a new box would be great. Deciding based on total weight limit and rounded out set of tools. The center possibly being a pick your planes or flexible area. Maybe needs consideration for what the viewers have but one of every core tool works. Saw, chisel, mark, measure, and surface. Then a video on layout, and one on building? I love the way the tall posts guard the tools stick out. Using the outer box wall as the first piece of the caddy wall is great. I also like how square the footprint is for stability.

I'd like to see you build a tool box without a top handle (maybe side handles) the COULD SIT ON YOUR BENCH FOR your most used tools. And yes I like to see your older builds, especially that huge wooden square that you also carved INTO.

  • @Heseblesens

    Very functional tool box!
A few like that seem to be a nice way to compress a lot of tools in a very clever way…if made stackable 😉, like with a short dowel in the top of the four pillars and a shallow hole in each pillar foot.
    Ten thumbs up!
