MBSB is my favorite bottle. I would gladly pay for another one. After paying one time for the Four Gate flagship product, I probably wouldn’t buy Four Gate again without tasting first.
Nice video, the first time I have seen the Michters Fort Nelson Reserve. We were lucky enough to bottle one of our own on our trip to KY in July 2022 but haven't tasted it yet. Looking forward to trying it now!
Justin: “Josh really likes these, but they’re expensive and I really don’t NEED more whiskey.” FOMO: “Yes, you do.” Justin: “You’re right. I’ll buy them both.” 🤦🏼♂️
Appreciate the content! However, i have to say that it's a pet peeve of mine when people say they wouldn't buy the bottle but would buy a pour at a bar. Bar prices are expensive! Here in Nashville, pours tend to cost ~25% of the cost of the bottle (it's actually usually closer to 33%). Thus, if you could even find it, those pours would cost you at least 40-50. So you'd be willing to pay 40+ (plus tip) for a single pour rather than 160+ for a bottle that would serve you and friends a dozen pours?
Totally get that logic by the numbers, and it certainly makes a lot of sense to just buy the bottle if you break it down that way, but we're still juuuuust frugal enough that $200 > $40 no matter how we slice it, and we'd still likely get a pour in a restaurant with dinner if either of these bottles were the best thing on the menu while we were out on a date night even if we'd hem and haw over buying a whole bottle for $160 more. Totally get your point though. There are some pours we'd pay up for in a bar setting in the $50-60 range for a pour for a special occasion, so by the math that would be $750 for those bottles, and we're still trying to wrap our head around rationalizing paying that much for a single bottle. We haven't gone there yet, but maybe it'll happen one day.
@stuffandwhiskey If you frame it as "special occasion pour" at a bar, then it makes more sense. I'd also be willing to pay up at a bar to try something I could NOT get a bottle of. I would never pay bar prices for something I wouldn't want a bottle of. Instead of paying $40 for something you rated as "just ok" you could get 2 or more expertly crafted cocktails.
Both of those bottles are too expensive for my budget right now, but it's interesting how a very rare bottle compares to a much more easily acquired bottle. I'd say it's mostly a toss-up, based on what you guys found, though I'm with y'all on the price.
We hear ya Tom. This is one of those interesting “curveball” matchups we put in our pool so that we can’t key in on everything being low price or a more common allocated vs available matchup. Gotta keep ourselves on our own toes to keep us honest to you all viewing (whom we greatly appreciate). Cheers!
@@stuffandwhiskey Honestly, I'm glad you don't focus on just the lower-cost stuff. I never know what you guys are going to throw into the mix and, frankly, I dig the variety versus all cheap stuff or all allocated stuff.
Cheers! Happy 2024! I'll likely never try either of those but if your tasting notes were mine, I'd never buy them I reckon. The more whisky I taste, the more I realize that I shouldn't buy $150 or even $100 bottles just based on hoping to find pure enjoyment.
I worked a security job at a Dallas Tx credit union. I heard the female employees refer to cordial cherries as c#m balls. Kinda ruined them for me. Dr Pepper jalapeno beef jerky😋👍👍
I think Erin is more than an experiential whisky taster at this point. She is way more knowledgeable than just a non whiskey nerd now. Sorry Josh it just seemed like you put her growth in knowledge and experience down and put yourself up as the smart whiskey guy. Everyone has their own palette and although there are resounding similar flavors and smells in a lot of these whiskeys it doesn't mean one person's wrong and one person's right. And what is a whiskey nerd really? Is it someone who knows the history of the whiskey, knowledge of what ingredients go into the whiskey, knowledge of different distilleries development of the whiskey? Does being a whiskey nerd mean that your pallet is better than someone who is not? On all the whiskey channels I hear the same tasty notes all the time, cherry, oak, honey, vanilla, butterscotch, peanut, brown sugar, banana, etc.. I like your guys channel because you both have different opinions and neither one is better or worse in my opinion
Always appreciate you watching and commenting. While you’re not wrong overall on Erin’s whiskey knowledge, I certainly wasn’t putting her down or propping myself up. Just speaking to the dynamic we’ve maintained since the beginning of the channel, as it’s who we are. I’m an enthusiast that get nerdy about whiskey and Erin is the polar opposite-she really couldn’t care less and just enjoys whiskey socially. New viewers may not be aware of that dynamic and mistake us for people who actually know what they’re talking about. 😂 Also keep in mind we’re married, and if I ever said something out of line (which I sometimes do accidentally) or in any way to put Erin down (which I would never do), she would immediately check me on it. You’ll never have to guess or think that something seemed a certain kind of way. It would be glaringly obvious in Erin’s reaction.
Oh, and we couldn’t agree more with you regarding a whiskey nerd’s palate being no better than anyone else’s. Taste is massively subjective and personal so there’s no such thing as better, and pulling tasting notes definitely doesn’t make someone’s palate better.
@@stuffandwhiskey I'm sure you probably didn't necessarily mean to come off that way but that is how it sounded. As men we get nerdy about everything. About our hobbies about our existence. It wasn't a big deal it just seemed like you kind of invalidated her a little bit. She's doing this show it seems because it's fun and something you guys can do together. But I'm just saying her growth in the whiskey world as far as tasting notes and knowledge of different whiskeys is definitely important. Where you guys have started is not where you're at now. I get the premise. It's a hobby for you and now it's become a hobby for her and I appreciate seeing the difference in your opinions. I'm married also and realize sometimes corrections come quickly and sometimes they come a lot later 🤣
Josh is a nerd, because he's interested in all the little details of what he's drinking. Erin isn't, because her focus I entirely on the whiskey itself. That's not giving Josh the big head or putting Erin down, any more than it's doing that for me and my wife when I say I'm taller and she's shorter. It's just an honest statement of their personalities. And I suspect - with 44 years of marriage experience under my belt - that when Josh says that kind of thing, part of it is he's just a-funnin' Erin. 🙂
I don't know if my wife's a unicorn - she's Korean, so I'd call her a dragon or a tiger 🙂 - but I wouldn't take for her. AFAIC she's the best wife in the history of the world. 🙂
Josh: I’m not sure 2 is better
Erin: Search your feelings, you *know* it to be true!
You know, now that I think about it, 2 probably was better. 😂
@@stuffandwhiskeyNO 3 WAS BETTER! 🤣🤣
If you ever go to a Buc-ee's, they have a Bohemian garlic beef jerky that will change your life! Best jerky ever!

The restraint to avoid opening that bottle is commendable. Cheers Timm!

FOMO do be like that! 😂
Just about pulled the trigger on Four Gate on Seelbach’s case deal. $225 is hard to swallow…
We feel ya. While very good, it’s hard to rationalize that much for a bottle of whiskey.
Peppered is better than teriyaki jerky. #teamjosh

The stuff you put down after a kid throws up…and that’s not necessarily a bad thing?

Both thumbs up for me!
I need to go bottle my own bottle at Michters I wish all distilleries would do that it would be a great idea. Great blind.
It’s a really fun experience to be sure. Call me a sentimentalist but having your name written on a bottle is pretty cool and kinda special.
Way to go Erin. You picked the best! I will never buy a Fourgate product based on BFH experience with that brand.
