‼ *SPOILER WARNING* This video contains spoilers for both the Ender's Game book and movie!! ‼
read the book first an then watch the movie = get frustrated (with all the missing parts)
watch the movie first and then read the book = get amazed (with all the new stuff)
One of those instances where the wrong order is the right order.
If you like Bean, definitely read Enders Shadow, which is Beans entire background and journey to flight school. It’s awesome.
This. All of this.
Yes.
Ender's Shadow also displays Card's growth as an author.
*But always read Enders Shadow second!!*
Yup, it's a parallax to Ender's game, told from Bean's perspective. I don't want to give too much away, but Bean is much more than he appears to be from just the Ender's game book. :)
Enders Game was written to give some development to the character of Ender. The second book, Speaker for the Dead, is the story that is actually meant to be told and is tied for my second favorite book ever.
The whole series is simply amazing and criminally underrated.
I have almost the exact opposite reaction. Ender's Game is my favorite book of all time and I hate every other book OSC ever wrote. I think Ender's shadow retroactively makes Game worse.
Each and every time I reread Game, I am caught off guard by how good it is.
@@jonrazo7912 Everyone's entitled to their own opinion.
Just out of curiosity, what didn't you like about Speaker for the Dead?
I loved the debate he has at beginning, the step-father arc and the Piggies arc. and
I thought that the books were all absolutely great. I also love the Malazan Book of the Fallen, though lol
@@edmunddantes7097 While "Speaker for the Dead" and the remainder of the Saga may not be among my all-time sci-fi favorites, I'd argue they are the most probably the most "human" sci-fi I've ever read.
The question how we deal with the "other" (be that the buggers, the _descolada,_ or AI), and what that may look like, is explored in terrific and sometimes terrible detail. I especially appreciate Including the ramifications of such interactions, and what those may say about us humans as a species.
I'd argue these deeper philosophical discussions are given much more space in "Speaker for the Dead" and the following than in "Ender's Game". That's why I can totally understand people not liking the tonal shift between the two. Everything after "Ender's Game" is definitely adult sci-fi, while "Ender's Game" does not have to be.
I think that’s ridiculous, like what’s the point of reading Enders Game if the main story is in Speaker for the Dead?
But also your first novel in a series shouldn’t just set up your characters, it should be just making a cool, interesting story and not trying to set up so much, it’s like movies sort of.
But honestly Enders Game is garbage in my opinion, and I even tried reading Ender Exile and I got bored after reading 23 pages because of how bad the intro was, including how uninteresting it was.
i watched the movie first, i enjoyed it a lot specially the last part. then i read the book, and it was amazing. i still think the movie is enjoyable after.
The young actor who played Ender was phenomenal, of course, Harrison Ford was the reason I watched it in the first place. The actor who played Bonzo was also terrific.
And he's currently our recently in the show Sex Education.
Around 2000, there was a giant debate on the internet if the role should go to Haley Joel Osment, or Jake Lloyd. They were going to go with Lloyd, but the movie got shelved, and the question became moot.
I ACTUALLY ENJOYED THE MOVIE! The Movie wasn't that Bad, Most Audiences did like it and it has a Cult Following. Wish it got a Sequel Though!
I first read Ender's Game in high school, assigned to read it for a class, and it became my favorite book to this day. I'm glad this movie has introduced many to the book, but I can't stand it. It's clear the producers didn't get the point of the story. If they did, maybe we could have gotten a more fitting director like Alex Garland. I hope you read Speaker for the Dead, I know you'll love it.
For other book/movie adaptations you could do, I recommend Dracula. The book is so good. And the movie is... interesting. I'm probably in the minority of people who aren't crazy about the movie, but you might dig it.
Yes. They didn’t understand Enders character at all. The way he acted like he was in charge in front of all the launchees just because he talked back to Dap!? He never tried to be in charge. He only took Bernard down a peg because he had to. Everything he got of respect was unearned, and was completely lacking. It felt like he was a Gary Stu or something. Completely ruined it for me.
They did understand but movie timing will not be enough to make it like a book. If they tried to do it, it will feel boring and incomplete.
The book Ender game will need atleast 3 movies. But the problem is there is no valid scenes in the book that could make a climax for each movie other than the book's climax.
I loved the movie, which I saw first. Finally listened to the audiobook recently and it's SO GOOD! So much more detail and backstory, more going on in the world, interesting politics. And the audiobook is narrated very well. Book is much better, but I still love the movie. A direct adaptation would need to be a series, a movie isn't enough to do it all justice.
I'm curious but when you watched the movie did you realize the twist? I always wondered if it was too obvious with the visuals.
@@JoshTruff As someone that saw the movie first, I did not see the twist coming at the end. I fully believed it was a futuristic training simulator. I thought it all played out well, but I could feel that it felt rushed.
The book really took its time to go through each layer of training. You really sloshed through it with Ender as he gained and lost friends and struggled to keep a professional distance from people he wanted to care about and love. The movie was more like Ender forming the A Team, which wasn't as impactful, but still fun to me. Everything in the book hit WAY harder.
@@redwardthird it's so hard to imagine since they give you so many hints in the movie but I guess it makes sense, why would you expect it. In the book it's such a slap in the face it's hard to even believe. Thanks for replying though it's an interesting perspective
Listening to audiobooks is not the same as reading.
1:28 -- Welcome to "Let's Read Ender's Game" w/ Kacee Cavazos.
2:36 -- There it is; the beginning of the series. I HIGHLY recommend reading it all, including the 'Shadow' series.
Now that you've seen the movie, and gotten the "initial reaction vs. the book" out of the way, give it some time and watch it again to have a more unbiased opinion. Maybe after reading the entire series to get a full picture of "what needed to be saved for the sake of the series" versus "what they had to cut out" to save on time. They definitely watered it down (e.g. the ambiguity of Bonzo's fate) for the sake of the PG rating and the broader audience, because the book was never originally intended for "kids". It was probably a studio exec's decision--Orson Card had a _very_ involved role in the movie's development, and was one of the biggest reasons the movie took so long to make. Rumours of an "Ender's Game" movie started SO long ago, and the updates on its production just STOPPED for about a decade before I started looking for them again, and it began picking up steam.
Something you didn’t really mention much was his relationship with his siblings, which they COMPLETELY cut from the movie once he leaves earth. A lot of his motivations in space are brought about by Peter and Violet, and them being cut I think is what caused them to drag other characters out of place and cut so much. They should have just made the movie 45 minutes longer and added the necessary details. It’s a 1 hour 54 minute movie, and adding an extra 45-50 minutes of motivation and frustrations would have made it much more impactful.
Edit: just finished the rest of the video and you did mention it near the end of the movie 😂
OSC explained in the audiobook that this movie is more an adaptation of both books Enders game and Enders shadow. Because most of the conflicts are in Enders mind.
The books are just so much deeper than this movie that barely scratches the surface.
FYI anybody who thinks that a movie adaptation is worse than the book fails to consider that it's a different medium. Books are more subject to explore the characters thoughts whereas that would be extremely boring when individual medium so they tend to skip a bunch of it or deliver it in exposition
Welcome to my hell. Ender's Game is my favorite book. I've read the entire Ender series several times. I've never been so disappointed by a movie.
Fun fact : the book is required reading in officer training in the US military.
Dink doesn't cinvince Bonzo to bring Ender in. Dink is not in Bonzos army. He is in Ender's second army and convinces its commander to bring him in.
In the movie, the actor playing Bonzo was playing two different people. Bonzo and Rosen both. Which was a very odd decision by the studio. But it is what it is.
I did this and my experience was the exact same. Every single moment you called out was me doing the exact same thing. I’m glad I’m not alone
The fact you like Bean means youll love the second part of the series that explores his journey. How he ends up in battle school all the way to......well you should discover that for yourself.
Enders Game is one of my favorite books and im glad you liked it. The movie obviously not as good but i think its ok. Definitely better than some other adaptations out there.
I think that this story is just really difficult to adapt with all the internal monologue. I think ideally a 3 season tv show would be the best way to adapt it which would allow for more character development and would allow the aging that happens in the book to take place (although i agree with aging them up for visual storytelling).
Also, the sequals are on two tracks. The Ender series has speaker of the dead, xenocide, and children of the mind while the shadow series starts with Enders Shadow and tells Beans story parallel to Enders Game
The subplot that involves Ender's sister and brother was added for the novel. Ender's Game was first a short story.
I was made to read Ender’s Game in the 10th grade and after reading the whole book we watched the movie. Yeah I agree the book is way better.
I love that your teacher had you read this book. It’s such a great piece of sci-fi work and if you enjoyed it all I highly recommend checking out more of the Enders game stories and saga. Enders Shadow provides the same story from the perspective of one of Enders final crew. Then there’s the continuation of Enders story after defeating the buggers where he goes and discovers more planets and hops around the universe.
I’m not a big book reading guy but I actually did enjoy the book, we had to read that entire freaking book for 3 whole weeks.
I had it for summer reading also for 9th grade
People not understanding that an adaptation doesn't have to follow the entire book. It can be a great movie but bad adaptation, but visibly people can't understand that they want the film exactly as the book. So why you want a movie adaptation if it's to want to watch the same stuff. Also, you can't follow the entire book in a movie and some stuff can't be adapted
Agreed. Granted, there's stuff that's downright disrespectful to it's source material. Not a book but think of the movie adaptation of Avatar the Last Airbender. But it's fine for things to be different. A book will never be the movie and the movie will never be the book. They are separate things and should be appreciated as separate but loosely connected entities
I probably read Ender’s Game like at least 10 times as kid. If you’re looking for more sci-if in the future, I’d would suggest the Children of Time series. I recently read the series and I thought it was pretty neat, although, the third book is somewhat different than the first two. And if you like fantasy, I suggest the king killer chronicles.
I would Give the Movie an 8/10!
A main issue with adaptations is 100% that inner dialogue. It can be really hard to represent that well on film, and its why alot if adaptations fail. See Hunger Games where all of Katniss's motivations and decisions are explained beautifully in the book but in the movie...eh?
Someone gifted me Ender's Game for my birthday a while ago but I never got into it. Last week I randomly decided to read it, and wow, it caused me to rediscover my love for reading. I loved it so much! I'm on Speaker For The Dead right now I'm instantly hooked! Great writing!
Enders shadows is a parallel book. Same story but from different pov. Beans POV.
Eragons adaptation still hurts me.
And yes. This happens with almost all adaptations.
Tbf, I feel like Ender's Game lucked out with the adaption. Compared to Starship troopers, and Percy Jackson, ... yeah. Starship Troopers literally got a director who *_hated_* it and Percy Jackson is well. Percy Jackson.
@@CHRF-55457 it was already started before they pulled the name and used it because of some similarities(Starship Troopers). Also I concur on Ender’s Game, especially with first time viewers of the movie who haven’t read it did feel the twist hit hard. The book… hits harder. Like with most(the book is better) saw Bourne movie (first one)first it was awesome, read the books and was like Matt Damon is a panzy with 1/10 the moral character of the man in the books. Movie still good.
Unfortunately when going the book to immediately watching the movie you'll notice a ton of differences with any adaptation. I did that with Ready Player One and it was frustrating but I accept them both as separate works.
Hi, I read all the books after watching, and the movie was incredible from a cinema stance. You ranted a lot about “context being cut out” but everything you complained about being missing was either mentioned at some point in the movie after you complained about it, or it was unimportant. Perfect example: you complained about not seeing Petra’s mental breakdown, but then 2 minutes later complained about having his friends around detracting from the story being about Ender. Petra’s breakdown is not worth wasting screen time on, whether Enders friends are there or not is irrelevant to the focus being on ender and the actor who played ender portrayed those emotions perfectly. Something you didn’t mention that was ACTUALLY important though, in the movies he is upset about committing genocide, in the books it’s understood that the bugs used mindless drones to fight each other and this was their version of an “argument” they had no idea humans weren’t mindless drones, so when the realization hit that they slaughtered millions of sentient beings when they attacked earth, they were essentially resigned to their fate and welcomed death.
Exactly. It's like if all wars today were fought only with drones controlled by a person at a home base. Whoever lost the most drones would be the loser and everyone would go on about their business. You can really understand how they would feel if you suddenly realized that you weren't fighting drone weapons with a person sitting safely in a bunker. Instead you were fighting those people directly, not just destroying a bunch of machines. So, it makes sense why they didn't hold any grudges against humanity because, had the same thing happened to them, they'd have reacted in the same way.
They would fight to protect their own, but they also had decided that if they did lose against the humans completely, it would be a just penance for their colossal mistake.
A very good book and a good movie that did it justice. I'm with you and think that she complained, about things from the book being missing, way too much. All of the sub-plots, and Ender's thoughts and feelings, etc couldn't be condensed enough to put in the movie, so it was better to not even get into them and just leave them out. That's going to happen with every movie made from a book. Hopefully she realized this and gave future movies some leeway in that regard.
@@chb2551 that book was way too much filler and side plots to adapt to a screenplay without it being boring, slow, and like 10 hours long. What we got was way better than I expected. People that complain this much about not getting to see every little detail the read in the book don’t understand anything about how movies work and how if the director did that it would end up like The Hobbit, where they took 3 movies and 12 hours to tell a story that could have been done way better in 1-2 movies and like 4-5 hours.
Thank you for voicing my thoughts better than I ever could
Contrary to popular “wisdom” I think you should always watch the movie first. Anytime you start with the source material, the movie adaptation will always feel watered down. Whereas, if you go in the other direction, you give the movie a chance to perform on its own merits, and then you can go back and read the source material that expands upon the world and gives you more rather than less.
I was laughing because this movie looked like one of those crappy afterschool tv shows and then I saw Harrison Ford and I felt sad because that means they actually tried :(
Starship Troopers as a book is a lot different than the movie. It's one of my favorite books.
A few suggestions for these types of reviews are Enemy Mine, The Postman, The 13th Warrior, and Red Dragon. The first 2 are totally different books and movies while the last 2 are very similar.
Interesting video!
I am a Boomer. I read the book in the 1980s and probably read it at least 4 times before the movie came out. I actually saw the movie with a friend who did not read science fiction, just watched movies and TV shows.
I will agree with your 3/10 but my friend said they should be regarded as separate works of their partucular art. I have read hundreds of SF books, this interpretation was a failure though occasionally vusually interesting.
But EG raises the issue of the psychological manipulation of children. It is kind of amusing considering that Card is Mormon. I attended Catholic schools but decided that I was an agnostic in 7th grade after reading SF since 4th grade.
I don’t get Hollywood and studios?! They can never adapt or do a good good summary and make a movie. They always put their own 2 cents into it and change things around.
"I don't know I felt fear, so I climbed into the toilet tank and hid." ~Bean talking about when he was a baby.
That’s why I’d watch the movie prior to reading the books. You’ll always get more from the books and usually it won’t translate to an entertaining movie. Plus, by reading it first you’ve already crafted the visuals in your mind. It’s hard to exceed that.
You keep saying that "we missed..." and "where's the..." It's a movie. It's not a series where all of the characters could be fleshed out and all of those sub-plots that you talk about can be shown. They can't do that for a movie. You keep talking about how much they missed out of the book. Of course they missed it. The only possible way that they could have given everything that you're talking about is to make a series out of it. So, they had to cut things out and have different characters do things that were different in the book so that they could move the plot along while it still made sense to an audience.
You kept saying that Ender shouldn't know it's real. As you see at the end, he did think it was all a game. One of the reactors I've seen, who never read the book before seeing the movie, was absolutely floored when they revealed that it was all real. So, clearly, for those who didn't read the book, it felt like the entire movie's battles were game simulations.
You're coming into this knowing how it's going to end and you're wanting them to convince *you* that it's a game. They know that they'll never be able to convince someone who's read the book that it's a game. So they threw in enough to convince the average person watching it that it was just a game, to then reveal it wasn't at the end. They then skipped the sub-plots so that the main plot would fit in the movie.
If this had been a trilogy then we could have gotten into some of the relationships that he dealt with and it could be fleshed out properly. A series would be even better. As one reactor said, this would make a great anime series. However, this is just a movie. So almost all of the book is going to be cut out. You have to remember that with all of the movie adaptations of books so that you can expect it when you watch all of the different movies.
The problem is that Orson Scott Card wrote a whole bunch of adaptations of this book for film in which the audience always knows that Ender is really fighting the Formecs. He assumed correctly that the majority of the film’s viewers would have been readers and fans of the book. When the film was finally optioned, the studio had a screenplay rewrite that became the end result in which the words are close to the book, but the action and scenes on screen show a huge lack of understanding of the source material.
@@AnthonyMackONEwait seriously you think most of the audience is book readers nah man the reason it seem like that is cus most of the loud reviewers are butt hurt book fans so
@@edgarmoule9825 most of the audience for this particular movie? Definitely people who read this book. This movie was listed as one of the biggest box office bombs of 2013. Lost the studio $68 million. I’d say that most of the people who watched it in theaters like I did were readers of the book/series and that this film didn’t draw in a considerable amount of people who hadn’t.
@@AnthonyMackONE you are crazy honestly is you really think that there are the same amount of book readers in this world as there are movie watchers
@@edgarmoule9825 no, I don’t. Not in general. But the majority of the viewers of this film? Yes. It’s such a niche book in a niche genre that an announcement of a film of it would mainly draw in people like me who’d read the whole series. It was never going over in a general audience. Nothing about the teasers or trailers were likely to bring in people who’d never heard of “Ender’s Game.” The advertising for the movie just showed a bunch of nondescript sci fi tropes without the info necessary that could bring in the fresh eyes of a large number of people who’d never read this book. And the box office results and the fact that this movie hasn’t generated a lot of casual views in the subsequent decade since its release only clarifies that.
Once again, in general, there are more people who’d watch a film than read a book, but not for this very niche book.
Please read more of the Enders game saga and react to it. I don’t meet enough people who have read them and they get absolutely phenomenal and mind blowing.
Speaker for the dead is my favorite book in the series
@@wickedtokensmokeIt’s funny when you are young and read speaker after Enders Game. It is just completely different. As you grow up it doesn’t really grow with you like Enders Game does. However you become grown enough to truly understand it. I haven’t finished Xenocide yet, but Enders game is still my favorite. Yet Speaker quickly grew to be my second favorite even with the shadow series. It really holds the intellectual side of Enders game, instead of being so built around more action packed moments. As well as it isn’t quite as fast paced with its story. So it doesn’t surprise me that some people don’t like it after coming from Enders Game. While some people love it and hate Enders Game. It really is such a great series, since it isn’t built that way to try to be smarter seeming. It really is just the logical continuation of Enders story.
The problem, Kacee, is that you're expecting them to take a 300 page novel and somehow condense it into a 2-hour movie and retain all the elements from the novel.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that you're overestimating just how much of the original aspects of the novel can be squeezed into the length of a typical movie.
To make the movie that YOU apparently wanted, would've required them to turn it into a miniseries or spend a LOT less time on character development.
Having said all that, it's not a bad movie, but the book was better. I remember reading it cover-to-cover, even skipping a day of college classes to finish it. I'm just saying, if you're going to adapt the book into a 2-hour movie, there _WILL_ be things lost in adaptation. A mini-series (or a 2-part film like they did with the remake of Dune) would've been able to do far more justice to the book. If you are going to continue reading a book and _then_ watching the movie (instead of watching the movie first), I suggest lowering your expectations a bit.
Also, I am absolutely envious of your book collection. I was a member of the Science Fiction Book Club for years, and I don't think I _ever_ had nearly as many novels as you do. After moving twice, I'm finally starting to get back into book reading. (I just didn't have enough time to do as much reading as I wanted to do; I was too busy working.)
The problem isn't that they left things out from the book, that's true of any book adaptation. The problem is they left out key character motivations, and basically sucked the depth out of the story.
After seeing this and hearing all your critique of the movie and appreciation for the book, I feel like we are kindred spirits
Loved this, I always wanted to do the reverse just to get that angle, one of these days Ill finally read dune. I've been considering waiting until after the new movies ha. Maybe I will have to read eragorn and follow your lead.
I prepared myself for disappointment going into the movie since I am a fan of the book and watching the trailer hurt my soul. All in all the book is a mature book and the movie should be rated R if it was to in anyway adapt the heavy themes involved... which could you imagine sub teen actors being the main cast in a rated R movie? I wish they would have done an animated version instead and just had voice acting which would have allowed a lot more leeway in staying true to the source ideology.
The entire Ender's book series is great sci-fi overall. Like most movies that are based/adapted from books it's very difficult to capture the entirety of the essence of the story. I would love for more movies or shows or mini series to be based on the Ender's Game series of books. Another, couple of universes I would love to see... Dragonriders of Pern series(Anne McCaffrey), and the Hyperion Cantos Book Series(Dan Simmons), thanks for covering this aspect of great books that become film. :)
What I understand from the comments the author made in the audio books, Ender's Game was specifically written to set up Speaker for the Dead. That was the series he wanted to write, but he wanted to set things up properly. Worst part of the movie is how rushed battle school was. It was rushed in the book, but he was still there for years and was in tons of battles. It felt rushed because it was supposed to be in the books, it feels rushed in the movie because he did basically nothing in Battle School
You should check out the Michael Crichton novel Timeline and the 2003 movie, i enjoyed the movie then read the book, the book blew me away and made me not enjoy the movie as much as i did before reading it lol
Honestly, she could do all of his book-to-movie adaptations. there's a lot of variety there.
When I bought my ticket for Ender's Game I had to remember that they were never going to be able to translate one of my favorite books into a movie. By doing that I found it tolerable. I could easily have been throwing stuff at the screen otherwise.
Yep. You have to do that with every movie that was made from a book. There's only so much time available to you in a movie and there's only so much budget. A book doesn't have that problem as an imagination can be endless. Hopefully she's given future movies more understanding when they have to cut things out and adjust some characters to fill in the holes.
When the video about the two other books going to be out?
I feel like the best thing about the movie is that it can remind you of the book... and you kinda lose out on that when you watch it right after reading the book.
Enders Shadow and the series that follows Bean and the other kids back on Earth is soooo good.
It wasn't necessarily a bad movie, though I absolutely hated it at the time it came out, was Starship Troopers, It has almost no resemblance to the book. I remember liking the Prentice Alvin series by OSC too.
Yup, pretty much my reaction when I watched the movie. To cleanse my palate, I had to reread the book again to wash the bad taste of the movie from my mind.
Yes, this is what happens when you read the book before seeing the movie. You're always companing what was cut, edited, changed or straight out wrong.
When you do the reverse, read the book after seeing the movie it expands the story but the visuals you create in your mind are influenced by the creative choices made by the movie makers.
I hope you do continue this series with books like the Hunger Games and Dune.
You like Bean, you'll like Ender's Shadow, um about Bean and Petra on Earth, when Ender goes catting about the galaxy like a free spirit... some stay
I’ve both read Enders Game and watch the film adaptation of Enders Game and here’s my opinions on both the novel and film.
Enders Game Novel:
I hate this novel so goddam much, it’s stupid and honestly felt like it was written as a first draft or written by a 7 year old.
There’s so many wrong things in this novel, the dialogue, character development, main character being not likeable, the story itself is awful and boring.
It’s like a Harry Potter In Space concept which can work, but for this book it just doesn’t make it interesting or exciting, but instead waters it down where it’s just generic and not that well written/though out through.
I’d rather read a Micheal Crichton book rather then a Orson Scott Card book, I even tried reading Ender Exile and I got bored after reading 23 pages because of how uninteresting it was plus a bad hook or barely a hook to the novel itself.
0/10 I would never recommend this awful novel.
Enders Game Film:
I hate this movie, it’s even worse than the actual book, it’s total garbage.
But I don’t think it’s entirely the movies fault, what I mean is that since the book wasn’t even that good, and since their doing a film adaptation of a novel that isn’t even that great and having to cram all the stuff in the first book into one movie just makes it worse.
I thought Ford Harrison would’ve been maybe the best part but nope along with the rest of the cast, it’s just horrible.
I would rather watch something like Prometheus, Alien: Covenant, Edge of Tomorrow, District 9, Chappie, Elysium, or anything else besides Enders Game, it’s that bad of a film.
It’s as bad as the new Borderlands movie that recently came out.
0/10 I would definitely never recommend this film adaptation.
I have made this mistake before the hobbit movie came out where i read the book before seeing the movie and was just like your reaction here as they missed this. that did not happen and it has really made me not watch the first movie again i still don't like the movies at all.
I would do it the other way around, and have done it the other way recently which has caused me far fewer mental troubles.
I think they already did it on the channel but if you first, read "The Mist" then watch it, it hits much harder...
What a unique breakdown and perspective, I loved this! Hope you continue the series
The movie screwed up a lot. But one thing I thought was was an improvement, was they kept Bernard around for Dragon Army, and Command School.
It showed Ender was such a good leader, he could even work with and mold somebody he hated.
Read "Enders Shadow" next. Its Beans story and its almost as good as Enders story.
Yes, ender game is where you watch the movie first and read book later.
Ender game movie is shot how it is supposed to be "a commercial flim". Movie time is not enough to include all the context.
Ender's game is my fave book (maybe obviously) because I read it around when I was his age going through command school, but I subbed because I saw Fate/Zero ep 6 as your next!
The Enemies gate is down!
Edit: I had the exact same reaction to the twist and the end. I finished the book and just sat in the dark and thought.
The problem with adapting this book is that it takes place over a at least five years and the main chatacter is a kid. There is simply no way thay so much time can pass. It would gave bee. Better as a multi season series so that the actors could age aling with the characters.
ERAGON YES. The series is a very good basic introduction to fantasy, its more generic but he was 16 when he wrote it, and it gets better and better in the following books!
This was pretty much everyone that read the books then watched the movie. It should have been a mini series. If you liked this, you'll enjoy Ender's shadow as well.
Also, the introduction of Bean in the movie almost made me turn the movie off.
I would love to hear what you end up thinking of Speaker for the dead.
can you recommend me something in similar to this book?
This movie would have benefited from either a tv reboot or a multi part movie
~
Good luck with City of Bones, I enjoyed the series when I was in high school but I also read her Draco, Harry, Hermione love triangle fan fic. It was VERY similar to the series like a loose rough draft.
~
A good series is Cirque Du Freak, but you would have to read a couple of books since the movie spoils what happens like in book 6 or so. Could have been so good as a film or tv show.
Keep in mind that this movie adaptation is considered the best among the other 2, so that being said, I can't wait for the other 2 😊
Oh boy, would you consider doing Starship Troopers? Unfortunately the movie is sort of well liked, but it's fascinating because it's both super faithful to the book AND sort of opposite to it in terms of the tone and moral viewpoint.
No powered armor means nowhere near faithful to the book.
If you liked the book, check out the Roughnecks TV series.
The book (as always) is 99.9% of the time, better than the movie.
Been reading SF/F for over 40 years, and movies are never as good as the books.
(The new Dune series is pretty good tho. 1st book of Dune series by Herbert is also a must read!!)
Absolutely agreed with you about the lack of hard-hitting moments after they nerfed the story for the movie. There's SO much important context missing. This was an entertaining watch though. Thanks for sharing!
Mrs. Frisby & The Rats of N.I.M.H., I Robot and War of the Worlds were all written exquisitely -but Hollywood ruined them all.
Ender shadow and Shadow of the Hegemon are both brilliant. Really like how these book describe "smart"
I LOVE ENDER'S GAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was a big fan of the book, but unfortunately, miniseries, or season length movies weren't around yet. That might have made it better.
Great Idea Kacee. 📕🎥❤
One I recommend is The Shining, the book is way different from the movie. There Stephen King’s version of the Shining then there’s Stanley Kubrick version of the it, curious to see which one you like better.
This is why I try to stick to watching adaptations where I haven't read the source material. Too often, the adaptation takes unnecessary liberties. There have to be differences, because of internal monologue and pacing, but they should be kept minimal.
They also have to adjust for the time constraints and budget of the movie. There's always going to be a lot of a book that's missing, therefore a lot of sub-plot and sub-text in an adaptation. If the adaptation was perfectly aligned with the book, the movie would also have to be at least a day in length, not just under 2 hrs.
If she had this much of a problem with a movie that did pretty well with its adaptation, she's going to be in real trouble with future movies. Especially when she knows that their adaptations were much farther from the books they're based on.
I read the original short story back in 1979 and actually preferred it to the(admittedly excellent)novel.
The short form better conveyed the mind numbing speed of events and horrible exhaustion of Battle School along with the shock twist of the xenocide.
The movie was just kinda meh. Too much YA action instead of the calculated viciousness and desperation of the training.
Its so great that you got that realization moment on camera! There's so many moments like that (in good books), where your jaw drops and you feel like you've been hit with a giant gust of wind, and you can't move on, you just have to revel in the moment. I still remember my first readthrough for that moment alone!
There's a fair argument for the movie being a mix of Enders Game and Enders Shadow. But as a massive Enders Game book fan Ive always wondered how people who didn't know the story felt about the movie. Because you go in with different expectations if you love the books. Still, great video and Im looking forward to more.
Even tho the book is good him being 6 is ridiculous like have you ever met a 6 year old even if they are super smart
Can’t wait for eragon! Also so excited you reacted to this one as well!!! 🎉 you should also do ready player one although it’s a good movie in my opinion, only has a 72 on RT but I didn’t read the book yet 😅
I gave it five stars, just kidding but there were 5 officers on the C5 Galaxy on the flight to Germany during the cold war, all of them, you know nuts. And this book woke me after what jume 1983-Mar 1985 training that I wasn't the only trained my ass off.
NIce reaction, sister. I can you are frustrated, bad, suriosly. In this time have a film a how meny time? And , as you sey, is not a meyby a half or 1/3 for all for the book. Unfortunatly , i cant imagine how time have a film with all for this. Meyby 3 or 6 ours? And, how meny situations is absolutly not wariability with Youtub. Is not a opiotn have 10 or moor tile for this. Is only my optionions. I wish you good luck. PS: Congrat for all so meny toys, the pokemon are my favorite too. And, pleas a ror the so bad , my anglish is a too little. :D
All 6 of the Ender books were great, and largely about finding the humanity in other beings so we can coexist in peace. Imagine my surprise to find out the author is a super bigot in real life.
This movie was super disappointing to me, too. But I went to the movies to see it with a friend and she said she enjoyed it. Even brought it up years later.
I agree that this would be much better off as a TV series, like The Expanse. You should definitely read the other books bc, even though this could be a standalone story, the places the author takes the series are amazing.
Just a future recommendation :) "The Hunt for Red October." Book vs movie. I found the movie better. Maybe you will to. :)
Perfect!!! Been wanting a channel like this!! Thanks!!
It may be obnoxious but people expect certain things from the story. Every movie/tv adaptation are completely different. Even movies that people love and they love the book everything is honestly different. Lord of the Rings is the biggest example. People love the books and people love the movie. However the two are completely different is character and story motivations. I have learned over the years to stop complaining and just take the visual story for itself.
Bean will not sleep next to Ender between Dragon Battles, shit only one Dragon battle in the entire movie. Salamander and um the other top team versus Dragon, first battle, the gate is down is the only Battle School battle in the movie.
Its sad because the enderverse deserves a good film saga. I want to see a live action andrew "ender" wiggin. Also, yes. They were always the formics
Speaker for the Dead is a fantastic book, the following books in that series didn’t hold up on reread for me. You will love the Ender’s Shadow series.
The failing of the movie was that it was perfectly ok. It wasn’t bad but it wasn’t remarkable.
Ooooh, do Ready Player One. The movie is big, shiny, big explosions, and I hate it, personally. The book is amazing and could have been an amazing movie if they only followed it.
One of the first novels I read in grade 8. Borrowed from school library, still on my shelf. The sequels were a good read too, too bad about OSC's controversial views
P.S. Grade 8 was decades ago ... eep
Movie adaptations are rarely as good or better than the book.
Jurassic Park and Misery are 2 acclaimed movies but the books are so much better.
Shawshank Redemption is the opposite. They took a short story and turned it into one of the all time great films
I also agree Enders game was great and the movie missed a lot. Based on the length, they unfortunately had to focus on one aspect. No war on Earth, but just the school.
The book is not perfect; there are problems. For example, if the game with the giant and the cups isn't supposed to be won, then why isn't the giant immortal? Also, what is the point of turning the children into bullies and including zero-gravity shooting training if the war is just about playing games
The City of Bones Movie is Kinda of Meh! But the Show Shadowhunters is Great!
You know what… I really loved the movie and was incredibly disappointed when there wasn’t a sequel and couldn’t understand why. But watch you reacted to it I understand why, it was cause the book fans didn’t get what they wanted…
