"His" place in front of the orchestra is empty. But the memory is alive.
December 1 marks the first anniversary of the death of our former chief conductor Mariss Jansons. With deep gratitude for 15 wonderful years, the entire Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks commemorates its chief conductor Mariss Jansons with "Crisantemi" by Giacomo Puccini.

The past twelve months have been bitter ones for BRSO: losing their beloved conductor and shortly thereafter, having to cope with a virus that made it incredibly difficult to make music at all. I bless the dogged spirit with which the orchestra has found or invented ways to perform -- whether it's through the "Watch This Space" series at the site of the new concert hall or literally bringing musical greetings through the streets to play for one of their long-time supporters. Thank you BRSO for your passionate determination to keep the music playing in the face of cruel disappointment. Mariss would be proud.

What a wonderful and moving idea - to commemorate a beloved conductor with one of the saddest pieces ever composed! (Although I must admit that I prefer the original version for string quartet.)
