i think Ski is fine. Hes got nearly 10 mil monthly listeners on Spotify alone. Hes been focusing on his mental health since X and Juice died and he seems to be doing a lot better now. I think his next album will sell fine

i’d argue his fanbase is only so big because he doesn’t drop tho, we remember how good his music was back in the day. I love ski in every way but that last project idk the name but the one with the song the matrix on was ass in my opinion, if he dropped more often the quality wouldn’t be amazing, even with him dropping singles every few months or features i haven’t rated him. If he drops i’ll listen to it fully but i don’t think it’ll be great, happy to be proved wrong tho for sure

I feel like Carti and Uzis history together has been blown WAY out of proportion with people either misremembering it or people who weren’t there talking about it. Uzi and Carti were never seen as a duo, everyone just know they fucked with eachother. Like even when 1629 was announced no one looked at their careers as one and in same. I agree. I think one part of rap culture that makes it somewhat toxic is peoples expectations for artists to put out straight fire non stop forever. And if they "fail" to do that then they "fell off."
That Ski Mask and Members Only section is horribly researched, there's far more that lead to the downfall of the group and Ski is doing very well considering he receives millions of streams monthly still. That's after losing two of his biggest friends in the industry as well (X and Juice), not many artist could persevere like Ski.

In terms of success Ski is doing very well. But his point is that Ski hasn’t reached the heights of the expectations that was placed on him. He came up with X and was friends with Juice, so people would assume he’d mirror those numbers or be close to it. In terms of how much noise he’s making in the industry or how relevant he is, to most rap fans, it’s not a lot.

The main reason behind this side kick effect is due to the record labels divide and concour agenda for more monatary gain and more control over the artist. Over the years us the audieance has become more acustomed to this system and now its become a part of the the undergound culture as well.
People that I immediately thought of DaBaby and Stunna 4 Vegas. Stunna started to gain himself attention once dababy started to blow nationally, but as Dababy grew, Stunna became more and more irrelevant. I love his music now to this day, but now he's at his lowest low now that dababy is irrelevant too.
i can understand why ski has dropped much with the passing of two great musical friends. honestly i think he would have maintained relevancy if he dropped more often.
Ski is a real nigga. There were numerous times where bigger artists jumped on his wave after X died wanting to collab like Migos, Drake, J Cole etc. he could’ve used X death to sellout and have those big mainstream hits but he chose to lay low and grieve his friend and he eventually would collab and support other upcoming artists at the time and help them get their big moments instead. Thats what makes Ski so different than other artists anybody else would’ve wanted the clout and mainstream popularity instead of the latter

I think what stopped Carti from being known as the Uzi sidekick was his cult like following. Even though Uzi is more talented in my opinion, Carti's cult kept him on the same level as Uzi

I think the reason for this is pretty simple. Only 0.000001% of people are capable of making it as super star artists, so even if you bring your friend with you, they might not have the talent or the "star factor" necessary to be a celebrity rapper.

Funny thing is I found Smokepurp before Pump. Everyone at my highschool knew Smokepurp before Pump because of that Skimask Song. Pump blew up later with D Rose, & Lil Pump. For all of 2016 Pump was Purps side kick until he blew the fuck up in early 2017 to superstardom.

Great video, I would have really appreciated a mention of Lil Peep and Lil Tracy, however. The industry tore them apart and when Lil Peep died, they were supposedly still on bad terms. Tracy's solo music is amazing, but tons of publications always overlooked him for their biggest collaborations. My personal favorite duo. Lil Skies and Landon cube is also one that comes to mind. I feel like Landon is overlooked for Lil Skies but he is very underrated imo

This is not inevitable for artists that come up together, but most of these “sidekicks” didn’t do enough to stand the test of time like the main artist. X got a new style. Ski still raps the same. Lil pump always has a new social media gimmick. Smokepurp just makes the same music with no gimmicks. (Can’t speak on Septemberrich never heard) . Sidekick effect can be broken with something to make you more valuable so fans will have a reason to listen to you and not just the main artist.

the way I remember it, smokepurrp was def making noise before lil pump was. if smokepurrp hadn’t been, no one (or at least no where near as many people) would have ever even heard bout pump. purrp def had a buzz goin before pumps first song even dropped. if anything, pump was the sidekick at first then after ppl discovered him + gucci gang dropped and became the biggest song on the planet and that’s when purrp started to become the sidekick
