Mutable Instruments Ripples (NEW! 2020 version) // Multimode Eurorack Filter Demo & Patch Ideas!

- TIMING INDEX BELOW SKIP AROUND // Here we have the new 2020 updated version of Ripples from Mutable Instruments. It’s an 8HP multimode filter module with low pass, band pass and high pass outputs. The LP and BP outputs have switchable 2 or 4 pole responses, the low pass has an additional VCA level control (great for AM synthesis, or general enveloped level control). There’s also now two inputs (rather than one), one of which has a saturation circuit for overdriving sounds into the filter or for bringing up the levels of external gear. The circuit is resonance compensated giving a generally “classic Japanese” flavour. As always I try to make module demos synthesis tutorials, full of patch ideas and packed with sound design tips and tricks. So I hope you can try and apply these patches in your own systems as well as get a good luck at Ripples.

22 minutes of Ripples? who has the patience?
22 minutes later: what, it's over already?
i came here for an overview of ripples. i left with an in-depth about filters.. mesmerizing! awesome video!
really nice as usual! lots of tips here! thank you
Great demo. Thanks for all the ideas Ben.
brilliant and useful review as always!
Can't wait to try the new overdriven input when mine arrives tomorrow. Thanks again for the great video. Cheers!
A thorough walk through and lots of inspiring patches there in a short time! Thanks as ever Ben!
You are a master of the craft Ben. From intro cuts and timing indexes to explanations and patch examples themselves. Bravo.
One of my favorite filters ever! I think I need to get the new one!!
Great demo and synth lesson Sir Divward. I took notes. Mutable Instruments got a great video!
Superb, splendiferous, magnificent...take your pick 👌
I learn so many concepts from watching your videos!
Seriously Ben. You are a master and you have brought me HOURS of entertainment with your videos and tutorials. This is awesome and will be replacing my Ripples v1 with this now ;)
Masterful patching thx for the tutorial!
What a fantastic demo! I’m sold, so take my money💰💰💰
Thank you very much. I really loved the low pass gate stuff, giving it some Datassette Vibe.
Would love this along with Plaits and Rings so lovely!
Glad to see that the beautiful mind behind Mutable is alive and well.
Came here to say this. Yes! It was sad to hear about issues going on. This is surely a great way to come back. Hit us with an upgrade to the basic bones liquid AF filter. Ripples was the first filter I owned two of. Safe to say I'll end up selling these and buying the new version. I'll have to say though, I may have to buy the new ones first so I can keep my magenta and green knobs! I own two shelves as well... pls help my wallet if there's a shelves update
don't be too excited. 2 more modules will come out after this and then its the end of MI likely forever according to Emilie
@@joncharnis4679 Why?
@Octavio P. Definitely not, she has explained herself very well on why she quit. She found that the design process for modules became stale and repetitive and she needed a new venture.
@Octavio P. If I had to guess, it's more likely due to attitudes like yours.
Another most excellent review, thank you Ben, I've learnt a few things, as usual. I miss your reviews, I hope you are doing well.
Well worth upgrading my current ripples imo, i use it for my bassline in my live case so those extra features are very attractive
Amazing Filter.
Those two sounds between 1:11 - 1:17 were so beautiful
I love your vidz n vibes man
Man, I've been using this module with the Matriarch and it's a wonder. Love the sounds this thing comes up with.
The acid part is my fav. Sounds so good. Slow. Funky acid.
Great review Ben! The thing sounds lovely and is packed with attractive features. Thanks!
It's been a while since I expected a not too expensive filter with all the features requested. Thank you for this video, I just ordered a copy of Ripple for my eurorack system.
the first filter sweep sold it for me
THAT LAST PATCH. I love how much modulation and envelopes are going into a straight 16th trigger, I’ve never thought of that. Awesome!!!
yeah it's one of the best things about modular formats, all the modulation options you can explore and mix together.
@@DivKid especially the vca/ dual input on ripples is really a game changer. I actually ordered mine after watching the video, great stuff 👍
Yeah extra VCAs are always welcome!
My god its the holy-grail; a good sounding modular kick.
sound palette a good sounding modular kick? Finally a replacement for Peaks!
@@reedtrygd4277 peaks is a very nice module
Daaamn thank you.
that 303 style thing rocks
Great video. I think this is going to be my first MI module. Outstanding filter.
Wondered if Emile would get this into your capable hands! Lovely vid m8, per usual x
OH man it's nice!
And I just bought a Ripples about four weeks ago. Oh well, old or new version, they both great sounding filters :)
Ahk! I also snagged a classic ripples brand new from a shop on a visit to chicago. I’d wanted to support the store, but sorta wished id picked it up used after the fact. Now I wish I’d waited entirely!!!
Nice!
Looks like my next filter is going to be a 2020 Ripples, great video as usual!
HP kick pump is something I do almost always with the Digitakt
first! Thank you Ben!
Nice. Loads of possibilities for a small module. Sounds great as well. Going to get one of these for sure ;-) EDIT: Bought :D
Great video as always ! Are M.I re issuing all their modules ?
I’ve listened to a LOT of Eurorack module reviews over the past 6 months to help me choose the equipment I wanted for mine.
By far, you do a much better job reviewing these modules and their features then anyone I have listened to. Being a Yank, I do have a little bit of a hard time making out some of the words due to a heavy Brit accent but just a little bit and when I do there is always closed caption providing it translates properly, LOL.
Still I love the that cool British accent!
Your reviews are the most information and help me clearly understand all the terminology on the first pass!
My career was for 30 years troubleshooting electronics to component level and 20 of those was doing in on Supercomputer Hardware so you might say I’m sharper then the average tool.
But still I was having a tough time learning some of the terminology and at other times I would understand it well but found some reviewers would cover this part of a module, some would cover that part and I was having to watch multiple reviews from multiple reviewers to full understand one module.
Not so with every one of your reviews!
I feel like I watch it once about a specific modules and I then have a full understanding of all the features and capabilities of the module when I’m finished watching yours.
You can really tell you have done your homework, feel completely comfortable talking about them and very much enjoy doing so.
Keep up the great work!
that's a really nice comment James, thank you. Always trying to keep things focussed and musical and going through all the features and sounds. Cheers!
No such thing as a “Brit” accent. Mr DivKid has an accent from the north (Bradford, I think), while I have one from London. Both he and I will struggle with accents but certainly not in intent and communication. Please, real life is more subtle than a paint-one-colour US interpretation. However, I see your comment as positive so don’t take offence. :)
with the gain at full it reminds me of a cleaner ms20 filter.
Wonderful video, thank you 🙂 In the saturation and bass boost section, do you mind sharing where your kick drum source sound was from?
The UA-cam generated subtitles are golden here :) Check 18:50 for instance
I guess that really speaks for the vocal quality of the tone :D
Watching this kind of tutorials make me want a modular so hard. I have "only" a MiniBrute 2 and a 0-Coast, with them I already can do a million things but the lack of additional VCA's, Mixers and Filters or whatever really hurts. Maybe this year is my one. If I have a little bit luck I can effort my first little eurorack system
It is definitely worth every penny. Extra mixers, VCAs or filters can really help out a semi-modular system, but also look into modular effects too to go along with those. Here's some module recommendations for a modular newbie:
I prefer VC8 from Erogenous Tones for the VCAs, the Make Noise QPAS for stereo filtering or Xaoc Device's Belgrad for mono dual filtering. Ripples is definitely a kicker too! Any mixer module works fine. For an effect, a small but useful multi-effect is the Endorphines Milky way, and if you want to dive into the deep end, look at Intellijel's Rainmaker or Make Noise's Mimeophon.
Cheers, and take careful note of bank balance ;)
Did you buy the MB2 to add a rackbrute? Of course you did!
go for it. buy slow and buy used it can be quite manageable
Worth the journey.
Great stuff ! Always appreciate your content!!
Could you explain the ripples rings patch a bit por favor ?
Hi Stephen, the Ripples and Rings patch is making a normal subtractive patch (oscillator into filter/Ripples) then that whole sound is going into Rings, so Rings is used as a resonator effect, not just a voice on its own.
mmmm this acid section. so tasty
Hey Ben, question: I don't know if you've used the alright devices Zzzorb or not.. but if you have, which one do you enjoy or like best? Looking for a nice filter along this price range. (180-250 USD). Thanks for the demo.
Such a lovely filter! :) At 7:38, what are you sending into Ripples (that super crunchy modulated fm am sound)? Thx ;)
Amazing stuff as always ! What is the dry sound you used at 20:09 ? Sample ?
Curious about this as well
Ben , what are the differences between the original ripples vcf & this 2020 version?
Call me crazy, but I bought the original ripples & wasn't super satisfied with the results.
I usually used the Lpg output. Maybe I was too picky, the new version sounds nice.
Also, is mutable instruments leaving the modular business?
20TH!

turquoise goat love
Do Ripples' Inputs and VCA/LP output pass DC signals? That would make it very useful for some Serge style patching, as say, a 2 channel mixer, feedback path, voltage processor/wobbler/slew. . .
Yes, there's some sub audio here ...
"18:07 How to turn Ripples into an LFO (with waveshaping and AM)"
Everyone of your videos should carry a warning, another module on my list. Can I ask what drums you were using at 5.19 the acid 303 part, it sounded brilliant. Thank you
What I really hope you get from it is a load of patch ideas. To try with this module, or with anything else. Certainly try them with other filters you might have first.
You're always welcome to ask, I might not remember on some older videos ... however, I can hear this is the Hexinvert Mutant Drums. Which do sound great.
Hi, I appreciate your quick answer, I am very impressed with the module and can see the potential it offers. But I do have a problem in that I need to get drums in my rig. The sound that patch sure hit the spot and please rest assured your work gives me plenty of ideas to help me improve my patching. First class sir.@@DivKid
Check out the Trinity from ModBap, VPME Quad Drum or the Squid Salmple all of which I really enjoy and get great range from.
Shall do, cheers@@DivKid
Not filter related but how did you do the rest of the acid patching with the accent part where it increases freq and envelope?
Wanted to ask the same
Towards the end of the video, you can see that he has mixed two envelopes in with a sample and hold using Shades. The sample and hold is moving the level of the envelopes. I think that’s probably what’s giving it the accent effect during the acid jams.
What kick drum module are you using?
the last one sounded really NICE
Hello guys, please -- i am trying to use Ripples with Mother-32, but I don't know how to patch it. The aim is to let M32 play it's sequencer, just replace the M32 filter with Ripples... Can anyone help?
So. What's the difference from the first version?
The 2nd input that has an overdrive and one more filter mode mainly.
two inputs instead of one, analogue overdrive/saturation on input 1, high pass mode, resonance compensation so no signal loss or low frequency loss with higher resonance. Not a totally massive make over but a nice update still.
@@DivKid ... and VCA on both lowpass modes.
Hi, have you checked your Patreon messages ?
has the old ripples any advantages to the new one?
is this new nersion on sale anywhere yet Im ready to go get one like now that is the daddy and the mummy all at the same time mmmmmmm ahhh
But I love my FM knob....
Sounds fantastic though.
Ah ha, it is there. V/oct to frequency. Should I trade my original? Torn.
