Using the DJI OSMO Pocket Camera for Making Videos of Model Railway and Model Railroad Layouts

- In this video, Pilentum Television would like to introduce the “DJI OSMO Pocket Camera”, a camera for making breath-taking video recordings in the field of model railroading or railway modelling. We are going to discover some possibilities, how this camera can be used to film model trains. As you can see, the “Osmo Pocket” has a three-axis stabilized gimbal that ensures your video footage is smooth and appears professional even when you are operating without the help of a tripod. Furthermore, this tiny handheld camera uses a 1/2.3 inch sensor and shoots video in 4K with 60 frames per seconds. The camera seems to have been built for rail transport modeling.
We will have a look at the closest focusing distance of the camera lens. It is also known as the minimum focus distance. In the whole video, the camera is placed on a freight car and it is pulled by a locomotive. The “Osmo Pocket” lets us create awesome shots: On the one hand, the camera head is only one centimeter above the tracks. Pilentum Television has never been able to shoot such video recordings before. On the other hand, the whole video footage is perfectly stabilized. The camera works in HO scale and even in N scale.
In the scene with the steam locomotive, the camera is installed only a few millimeters above the railroad tracks. It is a real worm’s eye view. Most people shoot model railroad layouts from a bird’s eye view. But this is unnatural in relation to the scale. Now, we can capture trains from the worm’s eye view. Please note: In this video, we are inside a miniature world in HO scale. Of course, we can realize beautiful cab ride videos. Although no additional light was available during the shooting there is a brilliant video quality even in low-light situations.
If you pay attention to the various camera positions, you can understand that you could never have installed a big television camera or a photo camera, such as a “Panasonic Lumix GH5”, at these positions on a model railroad layout or model railway layout. The small size of the “Osmo Pocket” is a big advantage! However, the most important feature of this camera is that the video image is absolutely stabilized; especially when driving over the railroad switches the camera does not wobble at all.
Pilentum Television has to admit that the “Osmo Pocket Camera” offers many other possibilities. Pilentum bought the camera only three weeks ago. Therefore, Pilentum has still have to play and to learn how to use this great handheld camera. By the way, the manual of the “Osmo Pocket” is badly written. Amazing camera. Its almost like it was made just for hobby train videos. It would work so well for filming wildlife, certain sports, and many many smaller places. The part of this video that showed what the camera can do was the cab ride. Once a person really practices and learns this camera, who knows what's out there to make a movie about. go into your settings on the Osmo Pocket and change from AFC to AFS to change your focus. You have it set to object focus instead of full frame focus.

I almost never make birds eye view videos, I adore filming from a low position. I mostly use my iPhone 6S for filming. I also use a small action cam for cab rides.
But this Osmo Pocket has clearly many more possibilities. 🤩 Good review 👍

i bought the dji poket 2 thanks to your video. was searching for a way to film the model railroad exhibitions we are taking part in with our local club, and wanted a cabview filming...now i have a camera train, because i also use an external microphone for it. thank you for this video, will help this year at the eurotrack model railroad gathering in Veszprem Hungary where we will gather but also the local meeting we will hold in our town with our club and others from across Europe. A very interesting camera! It's a bit of a shame the focal range is so narrow. Is it possible to adjust the f-stop to get a wider focal range?
The focal length cannot be changed optically. It is a fixed focal length with a field of view of about 80°. A wide angle lens is available as an accessory. I had bought this wide angle lens and tried this and immediately sent it back, because the wide angle lens reduces the quality of the video recordings significantly.

I just bought the Pocket 2, and the wider field of view apparently shortens the depth of focus significantly. Enough that it may be totally unsuitable for cab ride videos. Was there anything you did to set the focus on your Pocket to get the results you got? Like go to single focus mode maybe? Any thoughts you may have would help...

I'm just about to buy a DJI Pocket 2 for filming N-scale and H0 scale.
A question, is it possible to set the tracking to the rails? Will not the gimbal follow in the curves then?
I guess the rails do not provide enough contrast for the camera's electronic. But you can fix the focus on the tracks and additionally increase the gimbal follow speed (slow, normal, maximum).

On a single-track line the camera will work. On a double tracked line (with oncoming rail traffic) there might be problems.

Sorry to disagree with the majority here, but, the camera is out of focus for most of the moving shots. The Gopro Session 5 is ten times better than this.
But the GoPro Session 5 camera is no longer sold.
@@pilentum You've completley missed my point. I know the Gopro 5 is not available, that's what I have now. The latest version is the 8 (which is better than the 5) I'm in the market for a new camera, and, after watching this video I certainley won't be buying this one. Can't you see the onboard shots are awful.
