    Overall, very well done. To the commenters stating this or that wasn't included, if every type of artillery ammunition were included, this video would be probably an hour or so long and we'd never watch the whole thing, not to mention that the time and effort involved to create it in the first place would be pretty significant.

    • @Salamandra40k
      @Salamandra40k 2 роки тому

      @@KFLY007 You don't have to call me ignorant lol, think about it logically. I'm not talking about laying seige to a ship, I'm talking about laying seige to a land target, which is what these artillery pieces were designed to do. A city or fort may certainly have AA capability, but this was World War 2, not Vietnam. AA didn't have night vision, trackning radar, or computer aiming. All you had was some guys on a gun with a manual turn wheel and some vague callouts over radio. Bombers and fighter-bombers could easily approach, manuever, and drop munitions on cities or forts without TOO much trouble, as long as they had protection themselves in the form of tight formations and fighter escorts. The only reason I brought up battleship guns was because battleships off the coast can lay seige to land targets just like artillery pieces can (and in fact, that's what battleships are designed to do). Idk where you got the idea I was talking about shooting battleships with artillery, but that's not at all what I meant. Try to read a little better before insulting people and replying next time.
      Edit; Also, imagine why giant artillery pieces like this were almost always only ever built and used in extremely small numbers. Take the Karl-Gerat, for instance. 6 Total were made, and even though they were technically used throughout most of the war, they only saw specific and very limited use against certain targets. Now take the much smaller standard 105mm Howitzer. Used throughout WWII, Korea, and Vietnam, and even sees limited use into today. It's smaller, easier to transport, easier to fire, easier to produce and maintain, and is still known for packing a powerful punch. There's a reason all militaries widely used multiple, smaller artillery pieces as compared to a few, giant ones.

    I saw one of the naval 16" artillery shells at a history museum in Astoria Oregon once, it's mind boggling to think they were hucking those 5 foot tall 2,700 pound bricks of steel and explosives at 2,680 FPS.
    Not counting the energy of the explosives contained in the shell, the muzzle energy works out to 301.5 million Ft-Lbs, or just a tad under 409 million Joules. For reference, a .50 BMG has anywhere between 12 and 15 thousand Ft-Lbs. You'd have to shoot 20,000 .50 cal rounds (being generous here with 15,000 ft-lbs) at the same time and target to equal one of those 16'ers lol. Damn, _that_ would be a sight to behold, wouldn't it?🤣 Twenty thousand .50 BMG rifles all pointed at the one single target with computer controlled solenoid actuated triggers so that each round hits at the exact same moment with time of flight taken into account. A human size/shape casting made of lead or soft steel would really show off the power lol. Wish it was anything more than a pipedream, I think the 16" gun would be cheaper to fire at that point🤣

      If i remember, one of thr US battleships served in Desert Storm. Those 16" rounds do can cover 20 miles. The battleship was providing offshore artillery fire and one round hit an Iraqi army command post. Nothing left but a crater 20 feet deep. MI h. Heaper to fire than cruise missiles but a cruise missile can travel several hundred miles instead of just 20 and hit with high precision so one missile hit can destroy what 50 16" gun rounds cant.

    • @richardbadish6990
      @richardbadish6990 2 роки тому +2

      You have to realize that the 16in gun will carry more potential energy than a bunch of Lil rounds. For instance and I'm going to Put this into layman's terms. Let's say you are able to launch a 10lb bowling ball at 500fps or 10lbs worth of copper bb's at 500fps all at the same time and use the same point of aim. Which would do more damage? Let's just say the target is a car. Which would carry more potential energy? You have to realize that the solid object will carry more potential energy than thousands of Lil objects.. Right? Because regardless of how many there are, each bb is only carrying a very small amount of potential energy. See the solid object has weight behind all focused into one spot. The bb's will not carry all their energy forward they will be allowed to move freely. I'm probably doing a horrible job of explaining this. But I think it kind of brings things into perspective at least.

      @@richardbadish6990 I certainly can't remember my college physics much as that was some 40 years ago, but I think yiu are comparing a pukes and oranges. A 10 pound bowling ball at 500 fishing will certainly pack more energy than 20 pounds of BBs at the same velocity. First, the BBs are not one solid object and will spread out to thousands of BBs each losing energy rapidly. So using thr sane velocity will of course give thr massive advantage to thr bowling ball. However, increase thr velocity of thr BBs sufficiently and it can equal or exceed thr energy if thr bowling ball.
      Astronomers trying to envision a space craft traveling at hyper velocities have to be aware that even a small fragment if space debris impacting at every high speeds can ause a huge amount of damage. A grain of sand traveling near the speed of light has enough energy to pulverize a space station. So your position is true if both objects of different mass travels at thr same speed. But increase the speed and the energy of thr less massive object can increase to equal or surpass the more massive object.

    Gustav was a monster in every aspect, however being a monster is what killed the project. Regarding the 75mm gun of the Sherman tank, one thing in my mind, is how about the next ammunition would be the 76mm upgun of some Sherman tanks?
    Many people ask how come a mere 1mm addition in caliber size helped so much to Sherman tanks, from 75mm to 76mm. Not knowing that this is because of extra filling, that the ammunition of 76mm is longer than that of 75mm.

      @idleonlooker1078 2 роки тому +2

      Probably for the sake of safety. Storing the shell (projectile, propellant powder and brass case together) is not a good idea on a ship - as one hit would ignite the whole store and rip the ship apart. That's why propellants and projectiles are stored apart and away from each other - deep within a ship with extensive protection - against such a hit. This is probably why the charge is shown separate, alongside the projectile. 👍
