Finally - a Ducati Hypermotard in-depth review that is on technical roads and not multi-lane straight-line highways! Before I bought my bike I watched lots of videos of Hypers in the German, Swiss and Austrian Alps and some in the Italian Dolomites, but most of them were scenery driven. One thing to mention to potential Hyper shoppers is that the seat on the SP is slightly taller than yours.
Just put the lowered seat on my SP today. That stock seat is literally the most uncomfortable of any bike I’ve ever ridden. Have to see what the new one is like after a full day of riding.
This is the exact kind of roads I ride most, I've settled on a 701 Enduro with SM tires and brakes, all suspension reworked to be slightly firmer than stock Enduro but still softer on the shitty pavement than full SM. I ride my 701 in A group on road race tracks, Thill West, ORP, The Ridge.
Yeah these roads are not for the faint of heart. After riding out here for a couple years on a few bikes (my last video was made in this area) my Fiancée and I decided it would be adventurous to move where we like to be! It’s tough but very rewarding. The giant redwoods create a sort of temperate rainforest, absolutely beautiful. My tires do not love me haha
Ok, from someone who’s been looking to get a hyper since the 1100’s (got a Bonneville back then instead cause ya know, new rider) to finally getting an RVE, I loved watching this. Had my heart racing through some parts and had forgotten how much I miss that rush! Props to you and doing this kinda of ride along…discussion…enjoyed it a lot.
Man that bike sound nasty!! Love that thump from Ducati. It has a lot of character. I like this bike is even better in person, I think people that have not seen or heard one in person are quick to discount it. It’s a beast. Good review
It is riotous in person. If I wasn’t a glutton for punishment… I’d suggest keeping the catalyst in. The decat and slip-ons are so raunchy and outrageous. The dual exits under your seat is very loud. I cannot ride without earplugs, especially with the AGV Corsa R. It makes all the noises: pops, bangs, barks, etc…
Good work old mate. The show pony reviewers on MC bike launches are a bit of a joke. Where you ride is what the bike was made for and it looks exciting. I live on those sorts of roads but I've found its also brilliant in freeway congestion and city grid lock. A literal pain in the arse for long rides.
I’m looking for different seat options. The Corbin doesn’t work for me. Luismoto has seat skins with gel inserts that I’ve considered. Have you found any alternatives?
Watch out for that black mastic overbanding, lethal, when wet,as white lines can be,lovely bike, would like a screen of sorts, since i love motorway riding(in between the fun bits)
They are very loud and bark quite happily with the quick shifter. I was wearing a thermal neck cover that was tucked into my helmet. Certainly cut some of the volume coming into the helmet (where my mic is).
Rearsets usually have breakaway pegs and you can buy the pegs themselves for cheap if you break them from a crash. I upgraded to Ducabike sets and really love the customizable positions.
Really depends on how heavy-handed you are. During my commutes I average around 35mpg. If I’m blasting through the hills I get something like 25. There isn’t a fuel gauge and it has a rather small tank. I usually get my low fuel light every 80-90 miles.
Really depends on the roads and what you intend on using it for. Both are fantastic bikes in their own right. I spend more time in 3rd and 4th on my usual route. This route was just super tight.
That’s the Ducabike damper kit with an Ohlins damper. It works well! Depending on your riding style it can be very advantageous to have one. This one in-particular is used a lot. I don’t have it turned up very high but due to my throttle-happy wrist and how I sit further back on the bike I usually get head wobble coming out of turns (multiple times per ride). This bike likes to get on the rear tire and I’d definitely recommend a damper if you want to ride the bike at 60% or more.
Great video, how is the bike on the highway with the winds? And practical question, how you deal with the suit at work? You leave office cloth in the office, backpack ? Thanks, ride safe and keep uploading
It is not wonderful at speeds >80mph, but not torturous. You’re definitely IN the wind. I scoot my butt back in the seat and lean forward to fight the wind. The bike doesn’t like to hover over 6krpm (90mph in 6th with stock gearing). I don’t have too much of a hard time hanging on at speeds over 100, but I don’t stay over 100 for long. As for the suit, I wear slim jeans under it and my work shirt (belt in my backpack). I keep a button-down / canvas shoes in my office and leave my suit in a pile under my desk haha. I would’ve bought a suit hanger but my office is temporary right now and don’t want to drill holes in the Sheetrock. It’s not ideal but it works.
Hypermotarddesign on instagram. Great product. Highly recommend having it professionally painted. Not very easy to do so yourself, especially since it is 3D printed in the raw and has pretty rough ridges.
This bike has been out for a long time now. Still worth a buy or getting outdated? I’m looking for something more relaxed/light than my monster 1200r. Will be tough to part with the monster so needs to be something special.
What are your settings to be able to use your quick shifter through wheelies? Mine has a quick shifter and when going from second to third in a wheelie with the quickshifter it just wants to set the front end back down. I can only ride a second gear power wheelie pretty far but it comes to an end as soon as I try to shift into 3rd. TIA
I have DWC off, DTC at 2, and ABS at 1. DWC is the only thing really preventing multi-gear wheelies. You have to add more throttle than you’d expect when shifting up. You can’t hold the same throttle application and keep the tire up. When shifting, the bike will inherently begin dropping the front down. You have to counteract that force with more throttle. Now that you’re in a higher gear, you have to add even more throttle since the torque ratio has changed. Practice makes perfect. I’d say if you’re able to hold the wheel at 50% throttle, you’ll need to briefly increase to 75% to keep it up when shifting to 3rd. Obviously you’ll have to adjust your throttle after you catch the front back up.
What bikes did you ride before this? I’m about to sell my 18’ Tuono 1100 factory to get a 23sp but all of a sudden I’m having second thoughts. I know it’s not. Superbike but I’m concerned it won’t have enough oomph or quite enough handling to satisfy me.
Been a dream bike of mine for years. Finally road one last year and loved it. I often do longer rides probably end up doing 50-100 miles in summer. What are your thoughts on the comfort of the bike and longer range rides?
My commute is 80 miles. Easily done on this bike. I keep the pillion pegs on and take my fiancée out on it. She has her own bike and more experience riding and even she said it was one of the best bikes to ride two-up. As for longer rides, I’ve done one ride of 350+ miles and it was okay. I’d recommend a better seat, my butt was not happy. Luismoto makes seat skins with gel inserts, Corbin makes full custom seats. I’ll be looking around for seat options this year.
I am also thinking to buy it ,,, whats your suggestion of daily riding...this bike... I really love the style and posture on this bike... this bike as you said is only for few humans... only the selected people will get this
@@turbodave6068 they are both great bikes in their own right! Literally can’t go wrong with either. I just really enjoy the torque and playfulness of the Hyper. The STR was a more refined machine and was definitely easier to sling around the track.

interesting roads for a commute - agree with most of your thoughts on the bike 👍🏻

Very nice ride along and chat, this is honestly a better way to experience a hike than a formal review and all the specs and nonsense.
I’ll be posting a follow-up on faster roads. I’ve been commuting for a couple weeks straight now and I have a better route for these sorts of videos.

Is that La Honda Rd onto Portola Rd? Working your way to SM bridge into Hayward?
Ducatis are special and the growls from those Arrows are a real treat for the ears?

Love that commute!! I have been thinking about getting a hyper M SP. what kind a fuel economy do you get? I have a FZ 09 and it likes to wheelie too.

80-90 smiles for miles! Like you said the HM is a weird bike but I think that’s why I want one so bad!
Trying to decide between the new 698-RVE and 950-SP. Seems like the 950 doesnt get out of 2nd much
Really depends on the roads and what you intend on using it for. Both are fantastic bikes in their own right. I spend more time in 3rd and 4th on my usual route. This route was just super tight.

Any ideas on what it’s like having a pillion on?
How comfortable is it on the highway? I have an aprilia dorsoduro and the wind blast is ridiculous
Much more comfortable than my s1000rr. Wife thinks so too.
100 miles is a short ride. I ride my SM 200 miles or more just to make a decent loop of good stuff.
