I have multiple stories of me solo slooping and surprisingly not being sunk on sight just because i did FoF alone or something. Just yesterday i had a fully stacked Brig tuck on an FoF i had been doing after collecting a few Disney Sticks and some resources, and what came of it, they respected me for doing it alone, so they left me all the non athena loot and helped me out with putting it on my boat, i could also tell these guys were seasoned players as two of them had the PL curse and one had the gold curse. I love the game for the amount of actual chill encounters i have had. Back when i started playing the game at the beginning of the year, i had to level up my order of souls standing (i liked their aesthetic so i wanted their ship set the most), so i went with their emissary, and surprisingly enough, i was helped out on an FoF by 2 level 5 reaper emissaries, a brig and a sloop, they let me keep all the non athena skulls, and we all chilled for a bit and explored the map. Which was really nice of them. I was also a very sore loser back then, but now i am much more used to getting killed and outplayed by others, so i am being much more of a good sport about it nowadays. The game has this aura about itself that almost no other game can recreate. I love this game a lot. *(And yes i know not everyone is that chill, I've seen my fair share of asshole players, most of which are small kids, or r×cist idiots)* I love (most of) the encounters i had with other players.

What I hate about sea of thieves is that it's hard to go on the grind solo and or casually, but the griefers being nice after destroying your ship is a bonus
I find if you're working on Athena quests solo, Either Voyages into the Sea or in the Roar are a lot safer for the time as you won't have to worry about anyone trying to make a steal on your hard work. You don't get as much loot but it's better safe then sorry.
You have to remember you're not just looking for ships approaching you're looking for ships acting iffy if it looks like someone's just sitting at a distance waiting for you they might just be waiting for you so you should definitely be more wary
Last time I was out solo I saw a brig just sitting out a half an island away from me for no apparent reason. You can bet I finished what I was doing and scooted. I've caught people trying to swim kegs to me when I was collecting loot from a siren shrine as well.
I scoot as soon as I can see a ship cleanly on the horizion and not jist a mast. Also I do turn all but my map light off. Seams to still be really effective at keeping pvp jumpers at bay.
I was playing solo, reaper. Mainly for the gold bonus as I was doing a gold run for future supplies (hourglass). I JUST got grade V and was about to sell and quit, when I got killed (BY A GUY WITHOUT A SHIP) and his teammate came up and shot my ship while I had to repair, put out the flames, bail, and fight off the borders AND return fire. Almost got away but a lucky cannon shot brought down my mask. From that point, it was over.
I once just went everywhere with just a rowboat .... yes it took very very long but you would be surprised how much loot you will be able to sneak away with
I had this happen twice on one day when I just wanted to do some casual treasure hunts. I got on the island, turned around and see my empty ship sail away before I get a chance to even start a quest. That stopped my enjoyment of the game quickly.
I was just doing the gilded gold hoarder voyage for the weekend, did all but two islands, then got merged into a server with two grade 5 reapers who both immediately started beelining to me. One was a brig, the other a galleon, so I was able to sell nothing :)
