LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK OF THIS: I was thinking of doing an 'ANT GAMES' (like Squid Games) tournament to help us choose which ant colony or colonies we keep. Losing colonies (don't get killed) get released into the wild one by one. If we do this, I'll wait until every colony has enough workers to give the colonies the best chance at survival if they get released. Opinions?
Just wondering if anyone else has thought of this idea you were planning on what to do with the other carpenter ants you should make sure that they can found a solid colony and then let them go on your property that you bought to help fight against the invasive ant species
1, 5, 7. Because in colony 1, there are a lot of workers. 5 'cuz we need to see is it fertilized or not, but after she had her first ants, you will release them, whether they are males or females. And 7 bc it is that beautiful reddish one. So I suggest you to keep 2 colonies at the end, the reddish one, and a black.
I also agree about 1,5,7, but do not release 5!! She chose a different strategy (if not all males), this could also happen in the future we can keep comparing. She maybe chose 'quality over quantity', the 2nd batch might be some kind of bodybuilder ants.
Biology teacher back again here ! Thank you for putting out this content every week, looking forward to it everytime to have at least a 15min of free time each saturday :) I will show some of your videos to my students when I teach about insects!
Seems everyone wants 1, 5 and 7 to stay. With 5 being more of a let's see what happens and what comes of her brood pile. To be honest I am also curious what happens with number 5's brood. Will they be all males, or will they end up being bigger girls with the idea of going for quality over quantity as that'd be one heck of a tactic for a new colony. However I'd say keep her around to watch how the colony does if queen 5's brood isn't all males, if they are do what is not cruel be it keeping her fed and happy or releasing her to the wild.
Keep the colony that we've been watching this whole time throughout the series. I'm sure that everyone has felt connections with this one. I personally want to keep the Queen 5 since her brood is quite a late bloomer. Just for human intervention to help their survivability. IDK. It just seems the right one. This was so cute, almost as cute as the footage you took of the queen feeding the larva. I love how the queen was rapidly touching the other worker who was feeding her like she was saying "please sir may I have some more?" I think ants are so adorable :)
I figure 7 is a must as the one that showed you something rare a few weeks back and seems lucky. As a contrast to this 5 seems to be unlucky and it seems without human intervention this queen would not survive so keeping her for her own sake might be a kindness.

We should keep colonies 1 and either 6 or 7 long-term. I want two colonies to be kept so they can be put into two completely different set-ups so the future growth of the colonies can be tracked, to see if set-up actually matters. And we should keep queen 5 until we find out one way or the other if she really did mate.
Every time I see these types of videos, it makes me want an ant colony. I know that I’m nowhere near responsible to have one, but your videos are just so inspiring. Keep up the good work dude!
I would love to see the colony we've been watching but also interested in number 5 develop, seeing the two different styles of rising the colony's is interesting to see.
Imagine if the Queen number 5 has a golden finger, and it's already producing tier 2 ants to get a better start in it's mission to dominate planet Earth.
@@LordDragox412 yeah I’m interested to see the development and comparison between number 5 and the quality approach, to one that has already had the first generation.
I have two ant colonies at home. But, my family treats them more like pests, as they keep eating the food we keep for ourselves. One lives in the dining table, and the other in the kitchen (great spot for development) and they are HUGE. I bet you would take atleast a week to get out the queen from these!
Colony 5 is an interesting scenario, and I 100% think we should keep her, even if it's alongside a second colony. It's quite clear right now that she either is the most interesting out of all of them, or has no chance to survive in the wild, and it would be appropriate to continue caring for her.
1 and 5 for sure. 1 is the main focus lately and so most want to see specifically how they do. And 5, since it's so unique. It's rare to get a glimpse of this possible male ant brood. Many of us want to see how they do, what will happen, and probably see the Queen's end with the grown males released to do what they were made to do.
I'd love to see Colony 1 kept, since it's them we've already been watching for some time now. Colony 5 would be interesting to keep, though the Queen would be doomed to die since the males won't feed her, unless it's possible to pull off a special habitat to allow the Queen to feed herself. But then, would it be cruel to keep her going when in Nature she'd be doomed to die?
She'll most likely just keep eating the jelly like #1 did when too impatient to wait for the nanitics. The queen can eat on her own when food is available, it's just that there normally isn't food lying loose inside the protective confines of the nest she could eat randomly. Letting her to starve to death in nature is certainly the objectively crueler option than just giving her a bit of jelly to eat every now and then and letting her raise some males.
From my understanding, please correct me if I'm wrong of course, most animals in shelters are there because of Human interference whether it's habitat loss, poaching, traps or the introduction of invasive species. It's sort of a Human guilt trap. Number 5 naturally failed to breed so would otherwise die. AntsCanada has always tried to maintain as natural a lifecycle as possible (creative vivarium's aside). As for letting her starve, though that would be the natural setting, AC has in the past euthanized ants by setting them in a freezer to lower their temperature and put them into hibernation, then let them go further to slip away peacefully- which I suspect could be a chosen option if AC did choose to let #5 go. Keeping #5 in a specialised habitat to raise males for the duration of her life could be beneficial for farming fertile males to release into the wild. To potentially boost the success rate of fertilised Queens of the native ant species which is always a plus! This all depends on AC's final decision. I'm mostly just hypothesizing the options we may have available. x
I feel like we should keep 1, 5, and 7. We've been watching 1 for a while so I want you to keep them! I also really wanna see if 5's larvae hatch. And 7 cuz it'll never hurt to have one extra. :)

1, 5, 7 having to observe those strong colony’s to see how they take stuff, which are 1 and 7, and then 5 to see her how she keeps going and if it works out.
//we haven't been interested in colony keeping until Fifth Queen, and we some how feel like she needs a whole adventure of how she handles her specific lack of nanitics
While I agree with everyone, that keeping colony 1 would be nice, since we know them best, I think that keeping 4 and 5 would be a good idea, as I think that their small sizes would put them at a disadvantage in the wild.
I remember we all wanted to keep 7 in a previous video, what happened to all the love? I personally think we should keep 1 and 7 as we had the best moments with those two. I still hoping for the best with number 5 though!
I think you should keep the first and fifth colony, first is because you've been documenting its journey to us, the fifth because she looks like she needs help the most.
So inspiring! Can you tell us more about the "beards" that these ants appear to have? It's particularly visible on the queen and I've never seen them before.
Thanks to this series, I recognised the alate I caught an hour ago as a carpenter ant (probably male though). Excited to see more of colony 1! I think at most you should retain 3 of the 8, and interested to see what happens with queen 5 :) These single mums are killing it! Ps, the answer to the question of the week is 2 stomachs, a social stomach where they can transport food back to the colony and another for their own consumption :) Love your work Mikey!
5, if the eggs she lays are male, the chances of her surviving is pretty low bc male ants are basically flying sperm, not only that, it would be pretty interesting to watch them somehow adapt
5, since the rest have developed enough to be successful in the wild, 5 hasn't done much just yet. So 5 would be the best to keep just to observe and make sure they survive.
i would keep 1, 7, and 5, to see what comes out of queen 5's eggs. and 1 and 7 are one of the biggest colonies from my perspective. (good luck to queen 5!)
You have given me a gift, and I am sincerely grateful for it. When I was a young kid, the deck on the second floor of our house suffered an infestation of carpenter ants. They were very sneaky about it, to the point where we didn't even know there was a problem until I woke up one night feeling small sharp pains on my body. I tossed back the covers and found not one or two, but DOZENS of huge black ants in my bed, biting me! They were even harassing my poor cat, who ended up taking refuge in the bathtub, where she could see and attack them when they came after her! I've hated and feared carpenter ants ever since; I've had nightmares about the experience my whole life. That said, the sincere love, fascination, and enthusiasm shown by you, charming channel host, along with your excellent videography, makes me see these monsters out of my bad dreams in a different light. I still don't want them near me, but watching them like this raises feelings of curiosity and interest instead of my previous revulsion and fear. Thank you for the opportunity to learn like this.
Wow. I'm sorry you had to experience that. I am thankful tho that you gave ants a second chance. I know that it's not that easy to forget and move on from that experience but i'm glad you're taking small steps accepting ants❤
1, 5, 7 I'm super curious about 5. if the queen only produces males, does she go out herself and find food? Do the males just stay home and wait to mature?
The queen doesn't go out to find food. The males stay home and do nothing, so the colony fails. If a queen is unfertilized it's going to fail no matter what, so there aren't any survival instincts for the queen to find food for themselves as it won't extend their lifespan long enough for then to produce elates and pass on their genes.
I think that you should keep colony 7, as we watched an ant come out of its cocoon in that colony. You also could keep number 5, just to see how it progresses and possibly raises male or female ants.
i think keeping 1 5 and 7 would be a good idea! it would be so interesting to watch how 5's colony develops, if they aren't all males. perhaps if 5 ends up being all males, then 1 7 and 8?
5 might be interesting to hold onto for learning purposes, especially if she does wind up only having males. Would you be able to keep feeding her and use her males for mating flights in the future? Would she eventually give up if she doesn't have any workers ever? Just seems like a great opportunity for scientific learning.
This was such a wonderful sight to see and beautiful. Ant love forever!!!! Edit: I would like you too keep 1 and 7 but if others win I will respect it😁
I saw this video in my recommended videos 2 weeks ago and thought "Wow that's stupid how could ants have a heart warming reaction", I saw this video in my recommended again today and watched it and it was one of the most beautiful videos I have ever seen. You sir have made me fall for ants.

By the way this is my first video on this channel and I love it keep up the AMAZING videos
Yeah
I'd just pick them all,,,,, like a zoo they would all survive and be looked after ,nice clip enjoying it immensely ❤
While I agree with everyone, that keeping colony 1 would be nice, since we know them best,
I think that keeping 4 and 5 would be a good idea, as I think that their small sizes would put them at a disadvantage in the wild.
yeah true i will like one normal colony with workes like 4 or 7 and then keep 5 just to see what will happen to it, if theres realy only males there.
Yes
he has the most data on 1st
@@crunchybro123 yes
yes but only if she is fertilized

7 pls keep i love the queen of 7 so much, she's so charismatic.
This is one of my favorite channels. I have never been more interested in how those anthills get there.
I'd really like to see more of 1. I've gotten attached to them and seeing their update has brought me so much joy.
I will pick 1 cuz I saw it cute and i almost cried of the cutest
One of the guards was looking directly at the food the entire time, barely able to wait for it lol
So inspiring!
Can you tell us more about the "beards" that these ants appear to have? It's particularly visible on the queen and I've never seen them before.
Yes, they're kind of like antennae but smaller sensory organs called palpi. Ant mouthparts are pretty interesting and complicated.

Thanks for education..
ITS so fun watch the ant coloni..
Thanks to this series, I recognised the alate I caught an hour ago as a carpenter ant (probably male though). Excited to see more of colony 1! I think at most you should retain 3 of the 8, and interested to see what happens with queen 5 :)
These single mums are killing it!
Ps, the answer to the question of the week is 2 stomachs, a social stomach where they can transport food back to the colony and another for their own consumption :)
Love your work Mikey!
5, if the eggs she lays are male, the chances of her surviving is pretty low bc male ants are basically flying sperm, not only that, it would be pretty interesting to watch them somehow adapt
We could use this colony like donor for others colonys (it could be fun)
I wanna see if she can survive
Same here I also thing 5 needs help
@@2468cat if males are born then they will mate?
5, since the rest have developed enough to be successful in the wild, 5 hasn't done much just yet. So 5 would be the best to keep just to observe and make sure they survive.
I finally found a ant neat near my home so il be seeing it regularly to see if any queens appear to startup
i would keep 1, 7, and 5, to see what comes out of queen 5's eggs. and 1 and 7 are one of the biggest colonies from my perspective.
I feel sorry for you

You HAVE to keep Colony 1! I would also keep Queen 5 and Colony 7. Release the rest :)
Keep the colony we've been watching 1 I think. You should also name a queen Makai
1, 5, 7
I'm super curious about 5. if the queen only produces males, does she go out herself and find food? Do the males just stay home and wait to mature?
The queen doesn't go out to find food. The males stay home and do nothing, so the colony fails. If a queen is unfertilized it's going to fail no matter what, so there aren't any survival instincts for the queen to find food for themselves as it won't extend their lifespan long enough for then to produce elates and pass on their genes.
0:37 is my favorite scene of cute queen ants
I think that you should keep colony 7, as we watched an ant come out of its cocoon in that colony. You also could keep number 5, just to see how it progresses and possibly raises male or female ants.
If 5 is unfertilized, then isn't her only chance at survival being kept in captivity? I'm rooting for her either way!

i think keeping 1 5 and 7 would be a good idea! it would be so interesting to watch how 5's colony develops, if they aren't all males. perhaps if 5 ends up being all males, then 1 7 and 8?
I myself actually do think ants can be cute! And I love the way you portray them in this video!
Antscanada is basically a giant supermajor serving the queens
No he is more of an animal further up the food chain, but he might aswell be a god for them
@@notrickroll9819 yeah bro totally bro I will belive you 🤡
Ultra Mega-Major
It doesn't matter I just did not invasive species but right away I think it should be one
I’m definitely already emotionally attached to the first one.
5 might be interesting to hold onto for learning purposes, especially if she does wind up only having males. Would you be able to keep feeding her and use her males for mating flights in the future? Would she eventually give up if she doesn't have any workers ever? Just seems like a great opportunity for scientific learning.
Unfortunately the males can't be used in nuptial flight, meaning that if she has male ants she's practically doomed to die
And you would like to watch her suffer
wow you hate ants

True
1 because we have been watching them the whole time, and 7 because they were the first to get workers
Definitely keep 1 we’ve been following them this long and can’t wait for them to become a super colony
Keep 1,5 and 7; but keep 5 for sure. Watching such an unusual development would be incredibly interesting!
Its so cool to see them eat after so long just watching them grow and be born
