- Welcome back to 'Whatever Happened To': the series where we take a 'where are they now' look at players who found success in the NHL, but are no longer permanent fixtures in the league either due to controversy, poor play or just rotten luck!
In today's episode, we are gonna look at a 14-year veteran of the league and a 3-time Stanley Cup champion, as we ask: whatever happened to Niklas Hjalmarsson?

One aspect to Hammer's game that wasn't mentioned here was his fearless shot blocking ability. It's amazing he didn't get hurt more often.
That was the DEFINING value of his gameplay in my opinion
Yeah this was his largest impact on ice, he was never a scorer just an incredible shot blocker
Hey, Lifelong HV71 fan here! Hjalmarsson recently got promoted to captain and he is our best defenseman night in and night out with great passing, defence, physical game and especially the veteran leadership. Such a class player at 35 years old
As a coyotes fan, it must be stressed that... Hjalmarsson didn't necessarily get worse, he was hampered with injuries which ultimately derailed him. His style took a toll on his body
Keith and Seabrook will get most of the recognition for that Chicago Defense during the Cup runs but Hjalmarsson was just as vital for those teams.
He was Jacob Slavin before Slavin when it came to underrated defenseman with no recognition
Those two are the reason why there needs to be another award for the best defensive defenseman. Save the Norris for the players with the sexy stats.
he also just became the captain of HV71 after joining in november and like 10 games into the season. Forever a legend hes still paying really good for HV71 considering he had 1 year off before joining Hv71 this season.
Hjalmarsson was the most underrated part of the Blackhawks Stanley Cups he was a troll Shot blocking master of the game. And one of my favorite Blackhawks when the Hawks traded the Swedish Hammer to Arizona it really sucked to see because the Hawks gave away one of the best Shutdown blue liner in teams history. I love seeing the Hammer came back home to Chicago for a legacy night in the UC last season for the Blackhawks and that he came back for Marian Hossa Banner ceremony.
When talking about defensemen, points are much less important, and for defensive dmen, points are meaningless. Eating minutes, shot blocking, breaking up 3-2’s and 2-1’s, crisp outlet passes, finishing checks, board battles, clearing the puck on PK, evading forecheckers, etc. are vital for team success.
Every Erik Karlsson needs a Marc Methot
I love this series and channel. As a Yote he was a warrior, his whole career actually. Hope he's doing well, he gave a lot to the game.
Defensive defensemen get no love. You don’t win in the playoffs without them. Same goes for depth. Teams’ 1st and 2nd lines often cancel each other out, it’s the bottom 6 role players and the defensive d-men that often determine who wins the cup.
This is my favorite player of all time. Lifelong blackhawks fan. Got to see his retirement ceremony last year
most criminally underrated player. Deserved the Norris trophy. Easily one of the best Blackhawks players during those cup runs.
4:13 "After signing a 4 year, 14 million dollar contract with the Blackhawks."
He actually signed a 4 year, 14 million dollar offer sheet from the Sharks and the Blackhawks matched it. I'm assuming he still ended up physically signing his contract with the Hawks, but he technically signed with the Sharks first. Once the Hawks matched the offer sheet, Doug Wilson used the fact that the Hawks had tied up that cap space to sign Niemi who did play pretty well for the Sharks for awhile, even coming 2nd in Vezina voting one year, before eventually falling off.
Grew up watching the hawks and during their cup runs from 2010-2015 he was my favorite player cause never lit up the stats but would block any shot he could an unsung hero for them during those cups
"Whatever happened to the guy no one forgot about cause he hasn't even been retired from the nhl for even 2 full years yet"
I wouldnt even know who Niklas Hjalmarsson was if I didnt hear Biz on his podcast reference him as a teamate who "absolutely ate pucks (blocked shots)" heralding his toughness. Good for the guy - made $44Mil in NHL earnings.
Good old Meatball, it was a sad day when he left the hawks.
HV71 fan here, it¨s up to Hjalmarsson whether he stays in HV71 after the season or not. He himself has said that he'll continue to play for as long as he feels that he can perform on a high level and management said that they wish for him to continue playing for the club next season but that it's Niklas decision in the end. If he doesnt resign next year he'll probably quit for good this time as he only signed to help out his old club and has no interest in playing for any other club.
Man do I miss The Hammer
While Chicago had to shed salary to pay more viable pieces, Chicago certainly missed his presence. And it was the beginning of the end for their dynasty.
I've always had a fondness for the hard-nosed stay-at-home defenseman tendency type. It's not glamorous, but makes life easier for your netminder and forwards
I'd love to see one of these videos on Nick Bjugstad he was always my favorite Florida Panther
Still playing with ARI.
One of my favorite players of all time 🔨🔨🔨
Hey I’ll make this a lot shorter for all of you. He was wrongfully traded from the best to the worst team in the league for an absolute nobody. Worst trade in Blackhawk history.
There’s a few that could be up there. Tuevo to Carolina.
Bread Man to the Blues.
Saad to Colorado.
As amazing the Dynasty was, we paid for it with rough contracts and questionable trades.
But if that’s the cost of 3 cups in 6yrs. I’ll take it.
This is far from the worst trade in Blackhawks history Panarin for Saad, trading away Debrincat Strome Hagel Boqvist (all who were under 24 while trying to rebuild) for two packs of ass
@@JayBaddAssCutler Breadman was traded to Columbus, not St. Louis.
@@myyritenut My bad. I was typing fast. Thought Blue Jackets. Typed Blues
The reason I think it’s the worst is just the pure gap in player ability. Hjalmarsson was an absolute stonewall on the backend while Murphy is irrelevant. At least with Saad you know what you’re gonna get even if it isn’t as valuable as what Panarin does
I see he fired up wikipedia again
Niklas Hjalmarsson have never won a Swedish League championship or a World Championship gold medal either, so if he stays healthy it would be interesting to see if he wants to go after those titles. At 35, I still think he have a lot of gas left in the tank for a stabile defensman!
It would probably be more of would he make the team especially with a world championship
@@jkeygamervlogs-gaminghocke8661 That is a fare argument!
He'll probably never win the Swedish championship as HV71 is in what the NHL would call a rebuild. It'll be a few years beforet he club can seriously contend.
@@kohwai8321 I see. Interestong to add, another Swedish NHL player in Loie Eriksson also returned to Sweden after several NHL SEASONS! Will be interesting to see what he can doo!
Let's see if you can connect to Mike Bossy to Matthew Barzell
Do a video talking about the rise and fall of the AHL in Atlantic Canada pls.
What ever happened to Daniel briere
Defensive defenceman, got older, couldnt find a roster spot, retired? standard stuff
Hopefully he resigns, he just became our captain :D
