      Topology was actually my favourite. My honours project and my MSc was on topology and category theory. I think for topology, one has to really understand the definitions, then you'll be good to go.

    Mathematics is beautiful, mathematics is my girlfriend(s) 😂 "Mathematics truly is the universal language that enables us to decode the secrets of the universe. By recognizing patterns, understanding relationships, and quantifying uncertainties, we gain valuable insights into the world around us." Galileo Galilei
    Hi Dr Ben, you were very specific in the beginning that this is a video for university students but as a grade 12 high school learner I took tips or prehaps all tips that you give, so I want to know since you were very specific you think that the tips you give were for university students only & why so? & if so please do a video on high school mathematics & also the tips.
    Secondly, this is asking asking advice from everyone here. I identify myself polymath too but my core interest is mathematics so at school we are having a career on the 19th April 2024 & they said we should dress according to what we inspire to become. My problem is how do mathematician dress😅🤔...

      Hey there, I can't speak for Ben, but the reason he mentioned that Grade 12 mathematics is different is because you would use other techniques to get a distinction at the school level. For example, in Uni, past papers are hard to come by. Also, the amount of content/theory greatly increases. This makes practicing past papers less of a priority. (Although it is beneficial) Another thing is that exams in most mathematics courses count 50% of the final mark, so every other test can not be ignored.
      I am pretty sure there are other points, but these are the ones that came to mind. Hope this helps!

      Grt question

    • @benmahudu7431
      @benmahudu7431  4 місяці тому +3

      In simple terms, pure mathematics is more concerned with the derivations of the mathematical concepts whereas in applied mathematics we apply the concepts. For example, in pure mathematics we spend time understanding how the quadratic equation came about. To understand the derivation and theory behind it, whereas in applied mathematics we are just concerned in how to apply it and under what conditions do we apply it. Sometimes there is a thin line between the two, that is, pure mathematics and applied mathematics because they are all mathematics at the end of the day.

      @@benmahudu7431 thank you for the very clear explanation prof. However allow me to ask, in your expert opinion as a lecturer of the subject, which branches of mathematics have you found to be the most challenging for your students such that they generally tend to struggle with these the most, and are they a part of pure maths or applied maths?

    • @zamikhayanomgogwana7101
      @zamikhayanomgogwana7101 4 місяці тому +1

      Thanks for the response that's so informative Doc, if one wants to enrol on a Mathematics Programme, which one would you suggest that that person must or can do between the 2(Pure/Applied)

    • @benmahudu7431
      @benmahudu7431  3 місяці тому

      @@zamikhayanomgogwana7101 I would say that if you enjoy applying mathematics on real life situations then applied mathematics will be suitable, plus it involves some coding, which is a critical skill in this era. If you want to understand the theories and derivation mathematics and more abstraction of mathematics then pure mathematics might be suitable for you.

      @@philipnavin7402 very true too but then it means that people who claim to be passionate about a subject aren't necessarily passionate then. They just "like" the subject.
      So your comment could be underlying the definition of passion.

    • @benmahudu7431
      @benmahudu7431  3 місяці тому +1

      True. Passion only won't make you pass, you have to put in the work. Also, the anti-thesis of that is even worse. Having no passion can make the course to be even more difficult.
