I had to choke back tears watching this, my father recently passed away, and my mother passed away in 2012 and me and my mother always were in the kitchen together, she taught me how to can, jellies and tomatoes, and all thoes wonderful things, some new people have moved into my family home, ive not been able to go back yet the hurt is still to fresh but i would like to visit one day, thank you for this video, is very heartfelt and lovely hearing your story erin

Thank you, you said exactly what I feel. It wasn't my grandmother's chicken, but how warm her house was when we hit the door, how it smelled so good, how my grandparents were always so glad to see us, etc. I have my mother's cookie cutters. She taught me to make sugar cookies when I was young. I had three younger sisters (3 years) and they were triplets. Mom always had her hand full but even more at Christmas. I still make them and ship to my family. While they are the best sugar cookies ever (1960 something Betty Crocker), it isn't the cookies...it is all about the memories. The time spent with her, the signal that we would spend lots of family time together, that Charlie Brown Christmas would be on tv, tree lights. It is a lot to hang on a simple cookie but it is true. I'm teary again. Thank you for putting the experience so beautifully.
My grandma had the same kind of importance in my life. She was my most beloved person and I was always baking with her as a kid. She could make any food, any pie or cake and it would taste amazing. She would always try new recipes and wanted us to enjoy the cooking. I have inherited the passion for baking from her and I miss her everyday. The day she died, I honored her memory by making cinnamon rolls. It comforted me and i think she would have loved to taste the buns. Just amazing to see all your memories with your grandma ❤ And how it has shaped you.
I cooked daily, but was never a baker until early in covid when I was inspired by your videos to try making pie from scratch. In the last 4 years, thanks entirely to you Erin, I've become a baker. I'm so grateful for everything you've taught me, and I look forward to learning more and more. My niece started baking with me about 3 years ago. She's now 12 and is fearless in the kitchen. We cook and bake together, and we both owe it all to you! XOXO

This is so beautiful. I remember my grandmother baking in her kitchen when I was a young boy. She had a special place in her heart because she probably saw I was the misfit of the children and took me under her loving wing and let me into the kitchen to help her. I will always hold those memories dear to my heart. ❤️

Erin Jeanne. I completely understand your passion for PIE. My favorite pie is Raspberry Rhubarb pie. Kind of an unknown flavor but my Grandma would always make sure whe baked an ample supply we would visit each summer to Maine. I remember sitting around the dinner table in the cool evening ready for my slice of sweet tart delicious pie. I would always skip the ice cream on the side because I didn’t want the flavor distraction. My dad would introduce me to new flavors when we would stop at dinners while traveling, such good memories. He taught me to eat the pie crust first that way you save the best bite for last. Thank you for following and sharing your passion with us. Piekeeps the memories alive with each bite.
Erin, I feel the same way about my sweet grandma. She was and still is, the most kind and loving person I knew as a child. I was her first granddaughter, eldest of four (3 younger brothers), and I hold her in my heart, and think of her many times a day. I bake every week with my own granddaughter (she is 3), and if she thinks of me half as much as I do my grandma after I’m gone, I will count myself a lucky and blessed woman. And now we will learn together to make pie, just as you and your grandma did. ♥️♥️

Jeanne…… you made me cry. I too am the youngest of four children and the only girl. I always loved baking growing up and later worked with a wonderful lady in a cooking school where we baked cakes and being Italian I made the home made pasta that we sold. That was many years ago now and that wonderful lady has long passed away. Anyway since I retired a few years ago from my job as a secretary in a large school it has become my passion. Thanks to lovely and passionate people like yourself it has awoken that passion for baking again. Thank you 🤗

My Mom's lemon meringue pie, Dad's bbq steaks, my Gram's roast chicken, Nana's brisket, 1 Grandpa's iced tea, and the other grandpa's fried fish. When me and the sibs have been away from Mom for awhile, all we want when we come for a visit is a hug, her smile and her cooking! Food, memory and love. Nothing wrong with that. 😘

Great story. Thank you so much for sharing. My grandmother was a superb cook and baker. I'm in my 70s and my memories of her are almost all of her in the kitchen. She never used a measuring cup, but instead had a china teacup that she used. Disaster struck when she took it to a neighbor's and it was broken! She gamely adopted a new cup and kept on baking.

This was just beautiful. I’m not much of a baker or a pie eater…but my husband loves apple pie. Like he finds any excuse to drive 10 hours one way to get apple pie at a tiny diner in Casper Wyoming. He’s tried so many and that one place is his favorite. LOL! After teaching reading for over 4 decades I came to this site and to my embarrassment read the title wrong! I read it as Why I Love Baking with Erin Jeanne McDowell and thought YES!! Me too! Anyway, I am so happy to see this episode. My own grandmother lived in New England and she got up every morning and baked 2 pies. Back then everything you needed was brought to the door, mail, bread, milk, groceries-plus neighbors. Everyone sat down and had pie. The pies were gone by supper time. I lived so far away I never learned from her-so now I can learn from another expert. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

Dear Erin Jeanne McDowell, Thank you for being the wonderful inspiration you've been and helping me to get back into cooking. Very few youtube channels I see truly capture the fun of cooking the way you do, and it's encouraged me to do more with cooking and baking than I ever have. I grew up in a not-so-loving family that treated cooking as a means to an end and often met with anger or frustration when I 'didn't do it right' or 'burnt it' or something (Wouldn't any 7 year old burn their first grilled cheese?). I was routinely excluded from participating in cooking events like thanksgiving or birthdays because quote "I'd just mess it up and make a mess others have to clean up." My grandmother was the only baker in the family. Growing up, I wanted so badly to get to know her cooking and recipes, and just never got the chance or invite or anything, even when I spoke out and said it's what I wanted to do. Today, as a transwoman, I have no contact with them because they cannot find it in themselves to accept me as trans. That familial element of love, particularly with cooking, is more vital than I think some people realize. When you mentioned that you're going to show us how to bake because not everyone had a grandma to help them bake, I broke down crying just because of how good it can sometimes feel to be encouraged and enabled, and just how familial it felt. So thank you, again. Thank you for being you, and for sharing that wonderful you with the rest of us. I don't care about being a good baker, I just hope one day to be a fearless one like yourself. ~Jackie.

When I was born my family lived in Lawerance, but, since we were a Navy family, I was born in Leavenworth prison hospital. Yup, on the first day of hurricane season. Years later, when I was teaching at a high school that profiled as an inner city school, that beginning bought some credit with my students.
Erin Jeanne you are amazing!!!!! I also love to bake ( blueberry scones) and give them to neighbors and friends. Some people can't understand why I do that but it just warms my heart to share and maybe make someone's day, I send you lots of hugs and a whole lot of love.

For me, it was my maternal grandmother in southern Oklahoma. She would always make a cake just for me called the almost perfect chocolate cake. 3 layer marble cake with chocolate whipped cream between the layers and a thick fudge icing. Between her and my mom, I find so much pleasure being an enthusiastic amateur baker. Thank you for sharing your story!

Beautiful, thanks so much for sharing your lovely memories. And you're so right. Food and memories are bound in that special place in your heart. My Mom's lemon meringue pie, Dad's bbq steaks, my Gram's roast chicken, Nana's brisket, 1 Grandpa's iced tea, and the other grandpa's fried fish. When me and the sibs have been away from Mom for awhile, all we want when we come for a visit is a hug, her smile and her cooking! Food, memory and love. Nothing wrong with that. 😘

Great story. Thank you so much for sharing. My grandmother was a superb cook and baker. I'm in my 70s and my memories of her are almost all of her in the kitchen. She never used a measuring cup, but instead had a china teacup that she used. Disaster struck when she took it to a neighbor's and it was broken! She gamely adopted a new cup and kept on baking.

This was just beautiful. I’m not much of a baker or a pie eater…but my husband loves apple pie. Like he finds any excuse to drive 10 hours one way to get apple pie at a tiny diner in Casper Wyoming. He’s tried so many and that one place is his favorite. Maybe though maybe after watching this, I can give it a try, I can let the little mistakes just slide off and keep trying ❤❤❤❤

LOL! After teaching reading for over 4 decades I came to this site and to my embarrassment read the title wrong! I read it as Why I Love Baking with Erin Jeanne McDowell and thought YES!! Me too! Anyway, I am so happy to see this episode. My own grandmother lived in New England and she got up every morning and baked 2 pies. Back then everything you needed was brought to the door, mail, bread, milk, groceries-plus neighbors. Everyone sat down and had pie. The pies were gone by supper time. I lived so far away I never learned from her-so now I can learn from another expert. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

Dear Erin Jeanne McDowell,
Thank you for being the wonderful inspiration you've been and helping me to get back into cooking. Very few youtube channels I see truly capture the fun of cooking the way you do, and it's encouraged me to do more with cooking and baking than I ever have.
I grew up in a not-so-loving family that treated cooking as a means to an end and often met with anger or frustration when I 'didn't do it right' or 'burnt it' or something (Wouldn't any 7 year old burn their first grilled cheese?). I was routinely excluded from participating in cooking events like thanksgiving or birthdays because quote "I'd just mess it up and make a mess others have to clean up."
My grandmother was the only baker in the family. Growing up, I wanted so badly to get to know her cooking and recipes, and just never got the chance or invite or anything, even when I spoke out and said it's what I wanted to do.
Today, as a transwoman, I have no contact with them because they cannot find it in themselves to accept me as trans. That familial element of love, particularly with cooking, is more vital than I think some people realize.
When you mentioned that you're going to show us how to bake because not everyone had a grandma to help them bake, I broke down crying just because of how good it can sometimes feel to be encouraged and enabled, and just how familial it felt.
So thank you, again. Thank you for being you, and for sharing that wonderful you with the rest of us. I don't care about being a good baker, I just hope one day to be a fearless one like yourself.

When I was born my family lived in Lawerance, but, since we were a Navy family, I was born in Leavenworth prison hospital. Yup, on the first day of hurricane season. Years later, when I was teaching at a high school that profiled as an inner city school, that beginning bought some credit with my students.
Wow. Hit home in a wonderful way. A whole new, renewed appreciation for, and connection to where I came from. My heart. ❤

I found my love of baking later in my life and have taught myself from wonderful cookbooks like yours and videos like yours. I wish I could turn back time but I can’t so every time I bake I like to think that my grandmothers are both there guiding my hands. For me, it was my maternal grandmother in southern Oklahoma. She would always make a cake just for me called the almost perfect chocolate cake. 3 layer marble cake with chocolate whipped cream between the layers and a thick fudge icing. Between her and my mom, I find so much pleasure being an enthusiastic amateur baker. Thank you for sharing your story!
