Growing up with a great-grandparent living in Racine, WI (the home of O&H bakery, where Trader Joe’s gets their kringles) we always had a care package of kringles sent to us during the holidays. Love them so much!
My step-dad is from Racine...both of his parents were from Denmark, and they owned Lincoln Bakery in Racine. (It must have closed 40 years ago now...) My step-dad is fond of kringle, but he claims O&H is nowhere near as good as the kringle his father made!
I grew up in Racine Wisconsin, the birthplace of Kringle in the US. O & H Bakery in Racine is best known for their kringle, they ship kringle all over the States.
Since the 80’s my family has sent Kringle as gifts and had them for the holidays. They used to get them from Bonson’s back in the day but they don’t ship anymore so we go with O & H these days.
I grew up In Wisconsin and seeing this thrilled my heart. Living in Hawaii for over 50 years Kringle is from my past. Now just in time for Christmas I’m gonna learn how and share this yummy treat all around thank you and Aloha❤
Ms. Erin McDowell, you have made a baker out of me. From not even knowing how to make a cookie three years ago, I am now known for being the person who makes tarts, pies, and cakes for friends' birthdays. You make the trickiest techniques so friggin' approachable... I bet a laminated dough is in my near future! 🥐💜
Erin is my fav on this channel. I love her enthusiasm and her teaching style. The kringles are definitely something Im going to have to try and make, they all look delicious.
I LOOOOVE Kringles and Napoleons, I used to work at a bakery Lehmans Bakery in Racine Wisc making them. Pecan and apple were the highest selling and made the most. ::sigh:: happiest times of my life 😋😂😅 also the time I gained the most weight. 🤣🤦♀️
Hello Vickie, I also grew up in Racine. I worked at O & H for a short time decades ago. My favorite pastry, however, is the 7 Sisters without raisins. I remember Lehmans bakery as well as Larsons and Benstens in West Racine.
I love Kringle! Born in raised in De Pere/Allouez. My mom's house was literally 4 minutes away from Uncle Mike's Bakery and they make the best kringle in North America. Thank you for making your kringle the laminated way, not the Racine Danish Kringles way where it's all flat and sad.
I am arriving late to this video, but my husband and I love kringle! We buy our kringle every year from O&H Danish Bakery in Wisconsin. My favorite is the Christmas Kringle. This video is a great and I am inspired, maybe to make the kringle next Christmas. Merry Christmas!
Grew up in Racine, WI - Home of O&H Bakery - The OG of Kringle - hands down the best there is. So many wonderful childhood memories of special occasions when parents would stop at O&H for a Kringle. I flipped out at my Kansas City Trader Joe’s a couple of years ago when they started carrying it. I was freaking out loud because I hadn’t seen an O&H Kringle since I was a kid. It was the best….❤
Growing up in Wisconsin it was a breakfast staple on the weekends or special events. I now make a Gluten Free (GF) version of kringle. This was fun to watch and I can think of a better way to make a GF kringle.
Anyone who shops at Trader Joe's (in SoCal) knows about Kringle!!!! I just bought an almond kringle there. But it is seasonal--I'm so glad you posted this. I can make it year round.
Yes, I know Kringle! A favorite in the historic Nordic fishing communities of Puget Sound. The city of Poulsbo and the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle, home to the Nordic National Museum and the famous Larsen's Bakery where they still make the traditional pretzel shaped pastry with custard filling, almond glaze, and sprinkles of sliced almonds and sugar on top. I've moved away now, but thanks to you, I'm eager to try re-creating it at home. Thanks so much!
I am from Québec in Canada and did not know about this fabulous recipe. I will be hosting a brunch for New Year's and for sure I will make this delicious and amazing Kringle. Thank you for teaching, simply the recipe and to encourage us that we can do it. Merry Christmas / Joyeux Noël
Wow! I'm glad I came across this video! When I was a child, a co-worker of my mother's taught her how to make a version of this using chocolate, cream cheese, and pecans for the filling. I asked my mom for the recipe, she made them by memory, and none of the recipes she wrote down worked for me, but now I have yours - holiday memories of these treats will now continue! Thank you!
Omg! Have all ready placed my holiday Kringle order with O&H in Racine but I’m going to make this and have a throw down. It’s not Christmas without a Kringle. And Erin is wrong about storage - it doesn’t last a few days on the counter, because you have to “even up the edge” by cutting off a bit a bite every time you walk by 😋😋
I dated a guy from Caledonia, WI back in the 90s and he introduced me to Kringle when we were visiting his family. ( If I remember correctly he pronounced it without the hard G, like in the word “king.” ) I get so excited every year when I see it at Trader Joe’s. Thanks for posting this Erin! I might try to make one this year 😃
Grew up in Northern Illinois and drove to Racine for Kringles. Was ecstatic yesterday when I found Kringle in the Albertsons here in Albuquerque. Found out the bakery manager was from Wisconsin.
As someone who was born and raised in Wisconsin and then went to culinary school in Kentucky, I’ve done the Kringle survey many times lol, my poll goes about the same way. If they’re from Wisconsin or spent any amount of time there, they know it. If not, then they have no idea. I’m glad Trader Joe’s randomly carries it to spread the good word of its existence lol, it’s one of the things I miss dearly from back home. I made it one time about 10 years ago, I’m definitely going to try out your recipe! I need to introduce it to Nashville!
What a great episode! I loved the history and the enthusiasm for a pastry that is not a mainstream product. The instructions were understandable and inviting. Thanks, Erin
My parents are originally from Racine Wisconsin and this was one of their favorite treats. I found a bakery that I could buy Kringles from and have them shipped to their home in Florida. I'm excited to try baking these for our family get togethers and bring back memories of my Mom and Dad.
My nephew’s family owns O & H Danish Bakery in Racine. I have eaten so much Kringle and it is always amazing. They have 4-6 flavors a year at Trader Joe’s, but the bakeries have dozens of flavors, it is so fun going there. If you don’t bake it yourself (now you know how) you can get it shipped fresh. Now Erin needs to make the Seven Sisters coffee cake. It’s pie crust filled with custard with flaky rolls nestled inside. My favorite pastry ever, though I also like the Italian Sfogliatelle, which is crazy to make.
Yay! My first Kringle arrived as a holiday rep gift. Love at first bite. Lost touch with Kringle when business closed. Reconnected at a recent holiday. I Googled O&H so I could holiday indulge. Did not know Trader Joe's carried kringle (because Trader Joe's parking lot encourages chronic cluck fustering of the absolute worst drivers, I've ignored the atrocious annoyance. No kwik kringle for me!). Thank you! I'd rather two-days of kitchen kringling and drooling over my own fillings than a trip to TJs!
My husband’s Danish Aunt used to say, “ Too much Kringle put a swingle in your dingle!” And she vocalized the “e” ( like eh) at the end of each of those rhyming words! Loved that woman
There was a bakery in town where my parents often went to get biscuits and deserts on occasion and for holidays. They made special mini kringles with a jelly filling, and I haven't had anything like them anywhere else in the world yet. Thanks for sharing this recipe!
So excited to come across this video. I live in Illinois, but my sister lives in Wisconsin. Looking forward to surprising her some time with a homemade Kringle.
A new subscriber here!! I just found your video and so much enjoyed it!! You are informative, entertaining, and speak so clearly!! I am definitely going to be making all 3 flavors for dessert for Sunday family dinner soon!! Thanks from Kansas!!❤
Your video popped up in my suggestions and I'm so glad! I'm a 55 yo Wisconsinite through and through and never knew the Kringle history even though I've ate too many to count! I'll likely never make my own Kringle for all the bakeries around us (live 35 minutes to Racine) selling them, but I enjoyed very much watching your video. Thanks for sharing this wonderful content with all us out here. BTW- my favorite part of the Kringle's are the overlapping ends! Double the goodness!! Lol
Kringle is God's gift to desserts, IMO!!! And here in Wisconsin, Kringle is _de rigueur_ around the holidays (but I think it can be found year round too). I love it so much that I have to be careful to NOT buy them too often because I WILL eat the whole thing! Thanks for this recipe and video, HOLY YUM!!! They all look gorgeous! (and tasty)
I love watching and learning from you. You are such an inspiring teacher. I will be trying this kringle after the holidays. Thanks for another easy to follow tutorial.
So excited to see the episode, I was born and raised in Racine WI, home of the best Kringle O&H bakery. I live in Tennessee now and Kringle is one of the things I miss the most. So happy I can try to make them at home now
I tried a Kringle about 20 years ago when someone brought one to a Christmas pot luck and I was absolutely hooked. I've been buying mine from O&H Bakery in Racine, Wisconsin ever since. I'm in California so I have to order online but it's never been a problem they are always delicious. I'm going to try and make one though now that I've seen your video. I'm really glad to see you used heavy cream in your glaze, I always use cream instead of milk for my glaze and it taste so much better than milk, there's no comparison.
They ARE the bomb. Thank you, Trader Joe's Center City in PHL, from whence I first read the ingredients, and practically killed myself down the trolley stop steps, swinging a silly, well-worn bag, kringle carefully and firmly placed on top. First bite outta the oven...?🤯🤯🤯😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋 Long time passing, but BABY! Ms. McDowell is my hero for this one right here today.
Looks like sth im gonna make during Yuletide 😍 I love Erin's personality and I equally love to learn more about the American culture on this channel (as a foreigner who's been speaking English for my whole life).
Enjoyed every moment of this video. Now I am out the door to see if they have any Racine, WI made Kringles in stock at my local Trader Joe’s. It’s hit or miss, but worth it.
Ive been looking for an authentic Kringle tutorial for ages! I am self-taught/ learned on the job, and I get, like, the components, but never felt confident enough to tackle something so well-known and loved (I live in Wisconsin, 20 minutes from Lane's Bakery - we just got our last order ever before they close 😭😭😭). Everything online is either inauthentic or not in English! I'm adding this to my 3-day stollen and bringing the NOISE this holiday season! I can't thank you enough for this, Erin!
We had a family friend who owned a bakery and she was well known for her kringles. She started baking and freezing them to send all over the country months in advance. People would pre order them months in advance too they were so popular they never made it to the bakery shelves. The Kringle's would arrive frozen with a cute card with instructions on the best way to defrost and reheat the Kringle. We all way got a cinnamon and pecan. So good my mouth still waters 30 years later thinking about her kringles. edit: PS. She said every year she had to have her huge industrial kitchen aid mixer fixed because of all the Kringle dough she was mixing
I have lived in Racine, WI (the Kringle capital of the country) for my entire life. It’s a staple at every gathering…..we’ve just sent out our annual Christmas gift of multiple kringles to all our out of town family and friends. Whenever we travel and visit former Racinians, we take a special carryon filled with kringles. TSA agents in Milwaukee know immediately where we’re from. There are several bakeries that make the goodie, O& H is probably most well known. But I prefer Bendsten’s as I’ve been told it’s closest to the original. So happy to hear others are enjoying it too!
Love, love, LOVE this episode, Erin! As always, your presentation is top-notch and your instructions clear and easy to follow. IMO you are the gold standard for trustworthy and inspirational baking instructors on any platform. Brava!!!❤
In Minnesota, Wisconsin and probably several others kringle is rather well-known...and much loved. Around here it is usually pronounced kringlah. That's probably due to its Scandinavian heritage. We will definitely try your version here. It looks great.
My mother-in law introduced me to kringle my first christmas i was with her son. It was immeadiately added to my christmas tradition. Ours barely survives the day we get it.
I’m half Danish and make homemade Danish pastry every year. I usually use croissant dough. Im going to try your recipe! Love your channel. You’re a great teacher!
Thank you for this wonderful pastry! I love your delivery, very simple, great explaining and you make each step looks easy. The Kringle I ate as child, Dad was in the Air Force stationed in Germany, and I remember loving it. It was a favorite of my Mother & myself. Thank you for bringing back those wonderful memories! Also thank you for sharing the recipe, I can now make my own & feel confident with your step by step explanations!
Super exciting! My Danish (in DK) mother-in-law used to make great kringlekage, and my husband sometimes does, too. I especially love them with marzipan filling, but they’re all great. The standard shape in our family is a rectangle that you snip and turn outwards, which is very pretty, and it means you get some of the filling that’s caramelized on top. Yum.
Oh, Erin 😂 Totally not surprised by your sharing the love of Kringle. When a friend gifted me one for Christmas years ago I had to chase down info, history and recipes. Although I haven’t attempted yet, you’ve reset the inspiration- your streamlined methods are definitely workable. Especially, shredding the butter! Thanks 😊
Yes! I know what Kringle is! My mom made Kringle sticks for Xmas every year and it's the one baking task I decided to tackle years ago. It's not an easy recipe but takes all the prizes in cookie swaps! Delighted to see more Kringle!
Thanks Erin for sharing this Kringle recipe. I had my first Kringle 2 years ago at Christmastime.. it was magical. I'm 65 and wondered why I've never heard of it or indulged in one, ever! Kringle, where have you been all my life? !❤❤ Can't wait to make this recipe! 🎉
You are a joy to watch. You covered history, the do’s and don’s, the making of Kringle, the process of icing and stuffing and of course storing. You did it all. You nailed this project. ❤
Thank you, Erin! Loved this episode and I really appreciate your thorough explanation of assembling the Kringle and different ways to store it. Great information! Kringle will be on my holiday dessert table this year!
And now I want one--haven't had a kringle in years. My great-grandmother's go-to was cherry almond. And yes, she was in small town Wisconsin. 😂 (Her husband was the Dane and she worked to master his favorites.)
Lived on the border of Racine and Kenosha Wisconsin. My husband was the insurance broker for the fabulous O&H Bakery! The cherry is my favorite with pecan a close second. Can’t beat fresh. The frozen doesn’t come close.
I was in a bad car accident years ago with my daughter and mom. My stepdaughter lived in Racine WI. She sent us a Kringle and it was awesome!!! I need to make this!!
I lived in Racine for two years and I get SO excited when the pumpkin caramel kringle is on sale at Trader Joe’s when it’s fall. I miss O&H’s donuts and kringle so much 🥲 Thanks for the video! I’ve been meaning to make it for a while ❤
I'm new to your channel and all I can say is WOW!!! What a neat idea with the butter - I was always afraid to do that dough because of the work involved - but, Erin, you make it look so very easy!!! Thank you. I will definitely make Kringles because I always had it over the Christmas holidays (originally from Chicago, and now in Indiana). But I love Kringles. Thank you so very, very much!!! YOU ARE AWESOME!!!!
I made two of these as a surprise for a Christmas guest who grew up in Wisconsin. Strangely, my guest had never had one before (grew up in St. Cloud - perhaps that makes a difference). Anyway, I filled one with cinnamon sugar and one with frangipane and they were delicious. Making them gave me the confidence to try your rough puff pastry, which is now resting in the fridge. I’m cautiously optimistic that it will make some nice palmiers. If not, I’ll just try again. Thank you for these excellent tutorials. Your enthusiasm for what you do is very inspiring!
Thank you to Erin and Food52 for introducing me to this tasty dessert! I've always been intimidated by desserts that involve yeast, but you made this seem so appealing and approachable that I tried making it for Christmas. It turned out great and I'm so happy I tried this recipe! 😊
Thanks Erin for sharing ❤your yummy 😋 Danish recipes and techniques I can't wait to shop for ingredients 😊 they will go beside my green chili cheese chicken tamales this Month, many thanks & Merry Christmas to you 😅
This seems to be my year of firsts. Two weeks ago i made delicious, moist fruitcakes. Erin is so inspiring i think i will add Kringle to my list of trys. Will keep you posted. 😊❤❤❤
We got so excited. We thought maybe you meant Kringla! But no! It’s a whole new thing for us! Thank you. We’ll still make our Kringla though. Memories ya know.
Well, I am not from Racine, nor have I ever been to Wisconsin, but I know Kringle! Several years ago we found it in Trader Joe’s and have been a big fans since. Every year we can’t wait until the holidays so we can have Kringle.
“Even in Wisconsin”?!!! Racine Wisconsin is the home of the best Kringle bakeries in the US. My husband is from Racine. The residents fight over which bakery makes the best one. My favorite flavor is Pecan. OMG!!!!
18:00 - i would have used the back of a spoon to make a shallow trough for the berries - keep it a bit more manageable when folding and would make a more uniform layer - Love everything you do
I have always wondered these things about kringle. I can wait to try and make one or maybe 2, I have a feeling I might want to try more, lol. Thank you Erin
I grew up in Racine, WI - the Kringle capital of the USA. Every Sunday morning in our house was Kingle and coffee. There are so many delicious flavors!
Growing up with a great-grandparent living in Racine, WI (the home of O&H bakery, where Trader Joe’s gets their kringles) we always had a care package of kringles sent to us during the holidays. Love them so much!

Good for you. Happy eating!
Love her teaching style!
I’m from Racine, the Kringle Capital of the US, and want to push my favorite kringle flavor- APRICOT! With regular icing. THE Best!
Erin is my fav on this channel. I love her enthusiasm and her teaching style. The kringles are definitely something Im going to have to try and make, they all look delicious.
Her cookbooks are AMAZING! She is the reason I believed I could start a at home bakery, love love her!

Miss Erin...Bravo! You are an exceptional culinary instructor. Thank you for your creative talent!

Grew up in Northern Illinois and drove to Racine for Kringles.
Was ecstatic yesterday when I found Kringle in the Albertsons here in Albuquerque. Found out the bakery manager was from Wisconsin.
I loved the way you flew in and out of the empty lecture hall, Erin! Gave me a good laugh!
It's a joy just to watch you do anything!!
As someone from Southeastern WI, I LOVE me a good Kringle!!! A simple raspberry kringle will always be my favorite 🤤💗
As someone who was born and raised in Wisconsin and then went to culinary school in Kentucky, I’ve done the Kringle survey many times lol, my poll goes about the same way. So sad that Lane's Bakery is closing. A real loss for our area. Nonetheless, may the owners enjoy a long and happy retirement!
Gostaria de saber as medidas amei suas receitas sou do Brasil
Love the historic info. First time watching you. You are so adorable and a really great teacher. 👏👍 Thank you for sharing!!

I love baking, learning about food/history and of course eating it!
Love, love, LOVE this episode, Erin! As always, your presentation is top-notch and your instructions clear and easy to follow. IMO you are the gold standard for trustworthy and inspirational baking instructors on any platform. Brava!!!❤
I discovered Kringle a few years back. It's sooooo good! I can't wait to try making it!! Thank you, Erin! It's my first time watching this channel.
Thanks 😊
I can't wait to make this, Erin!! Thank you for sharing this.
Awesome story telling and now I'm intrigued to make this. You're awesome!
I’m so glad I found you. Now I’m binge watching
Yes! I know what Kringle is! My mom made Kringle sticks for Xmas every year and it's the one baking task I decided to tackle years ago. It's not an easy recipe but takes all the prizes in cookie swaps! Delighted to see more Kringle!
Would you elaborate on your Kringle sticks.
Excellent narration, excellent directions, excellent research, excellent history
Thank you, Wally
I love kringle so much! Thank you for evangelizing kringle.
This is such a wonderfully excellent video tutorial on kringles! I absolutely love this woman! Please give us more!
I love the sound of the word: Kringle. I’m intrigued, and now I want to try some.
I was in a bad car accident years ago with my daughter and mom. My stepdaughter lived in Racine WI. She sent us a Kringle and it was awesome!!! I need to make this!!
I love the Danish Kringle from O&H Danish Bakery in WI! Thank you for this video and recipes so now I can make my own!
PLEASE OPEN UP A Bakery/cafe restaurant and call it “McDowells” lol!! I’d definitely eat there because everything you make looks SOOOO SCRUMPTIOUS!!!
I might have to give this a try! Maybe add to my bakery menu!
I've started making this every year for our Christmas get together. I love that you can keep it in the freezer and it still tastes amazing. Thank you!
I loved that you grated the butter for lamination. I could do it that way!
Thanks Erin for sharing ❤your yummy 😋 Danish recipes and techniques I can't wait to shop for ingredients 😊 they will go beside my green chili cheese chicken tamales this Month, many thanks & Merry Christmas to you 😅
Oh how I love me some Erin McDowell! You’re the very best. ❤
Omg I absolutely LOVE your personality! Lol. You make me smile ❤️ AND.... you have inspired me to make this!
This seems to be my year of firsts. Two weeks ago i made delicious, moist fruitcakes. Erin is so inspiring i think i will add Kringle to my list of trys. Will keep you posted. 😊❤❤❤
When she said pick something for filling from your area, I thought oh yum, prickly pear cactus jam. I live in the desert SouthWest of the US.
We got so excited. We thought maybe you meant Kringla! But no! It’s a whole new thing for us! Thank you. We’ll still make our Kringla though. Memories ya know.
Love your energy and will try and Kringle
Well, I am not from Racine, nor have I ever been to Wisconsin, but I know Kringle! Several years ago we found it in Trader Joe’s and have been a big fans since. Every year we can’t wait until the holidays so we can have Kringle.
My favorites are the cheese/cherry and cheese/blueberry. Pecan is always yummy, too.
Erin is such a delight, and as a Scandinavian, I approve 😄
Erin you’re the best! Love how you explain your recipes!
“Even in Wisconsin”?!!! Racine Wisconsin is the home of the best Kringle bakeries in the US. My husband is from Racine. The residents fight over which bakery makes the best one. My favorite flavor is Pecan. OMG!!!!
18:00 - i would have used the back of a spoon to make a shallow trough for the berries - keep it a bit more manageable when folding and would make a more uniform layer - Love everything you do
You are so cute!!! Lol. I absolutely love your episodes.
I gotta say this warmed my cold wisconsinite heart.
