WOW! FINALLY SOMEONE WHO KNOWS HOW TO TEACH GUITAR...MOST OF THESE UA-cam TEACHERS THINK YOU HAVE PHOTOGRAPHIC MEMORY OR SOMETHING...IN ORDER TO LEARN A SONG OR A LICK FOR THAT MATTER YOU NEED TO MEMORIZE THE TABS OR THE LYRICS AND CORDS...YOU JUST CAN'T STORE THAT STUFF IN YOUR MIND WITHOUT SEEING IT WRITTEN OUT ..LIKE YOU SEE THE ABOVE..GREAT JOB...OF UNDERSTANDING HOW THE MIND WORKS IN CONNECTION WITH THE GUITAR...
Excellent teaching style..... very good level of detail. Frustrating when a guitar teacher assumes you know everything and glosses over a key concept you absolutely need for playing a certain song correctly. Instead you even give alternate ways of doing the song. Don't know why I have always found that Johnny Cash alternating bass line to be so difficult. But I don't know a lot of amateurs who can do it just like he does.
need help - when u strum down down up down up, are you strumming the whole chord? like for example all 6 strings on the e you do the pattern, then when you switch to A the 5 strings? also when you switch chords you start on down down right? thanks!
thanks for this question - sorry I missed it until now. For the "down down... up down up" part, you could strum the entire chord (all strings)... but honestly, what I wish I clarified in the video, is that for the first strum of each series, I'll typically only play the bass note (or the bassiest 2-3 notes) of the chord - and then strum the full chord (all necessary) strings. This creates a nice variety of sounds (single bass note + full chord), which helps fill things out a bit. I'll take note and explain this type of thing in more detail in future lessons in general. Thanks again!
Great lesson! I'm really enjoying the song. The only thing that didn't quite click for me was the strum pattern. What you say in the video and what is shown on the strumming graphic don't seem to match? I'm really struggling with different strumming patterns so just "listening to it and figuring it out" doesn't work for me. Otherwise, great video! Thanks for your hard work.
I too struggle with strum patterns sometimes. I have found that improvisation works well for me. Just to not think too much. It doesn't have to be spot on. I think that's how styles are created. Just my opinion, I could be wrong.
Thanks for this comment, by the way. As I watched this video lesson just now (1-2 years after making this lesson), I felt similarly that I didn't cover it as well as I would have liked. Will take note for future video lessons!
Can you explain the strumming more for me? I don’t know if your strumming all 6 cords or certain ones during the strum pattern. Please help when you get a chance
Wow! Excellent format. Great choice. You'll probably get a shitload of beginning guitarists to subscribe as the whole package is there for them. Suggestion? Add your cover at the very end and let us other guitarist know where it begins 'cause that's (progression and right hand stuff) usually all we're interested in if we haven't figured it out just by listening to the tune. ;D
+pixelatedparcel thanks for the feedback! Definitely appreciated. This is definitely something I wonder about all the time (I've heard feedback saying this as well as the opposite). Again I appreciate letting me know what you think works best - will keep that in mind!
Songnotes That or another dedicated channel...Thing is, when you reach a certain level you just want to cut to the chase and play the song with a buddy to get the feel and learn to sing as you play. It would just be more convenient to stick with the lesson instead of going to some other channel or spotify to get that. Great work, though. I can see your subscriptions exploding, once word gets out.
Hello je découvre vos vidéos... c'est génial et clair, merci+++ Vous jouez sur une Taylor diapason 645mm ou 584mm ? Sur la vidéo je me rends pas compte. Thanks for answer. It's very important for me to know that.
Hi - sorry but I'm not sure if I understand correctly. But I'm guessing you're asking about tuning. I was in standard tuning for this lesson (key of E) - but, as I note, Johnny Cash plays it with a capo 1st fret (key of F). So, use the chords I show w/ capo 1st to play along with him. Otherwise you'll be a half step below his pitch.
Lesson timestamps:
- 0:00 Playthrough
- 0:44 Chords needed
- 1:41 Verse structure w/ simple strum
- 2:50 Intro riff
- 3:40 Strumming w/ alternating bass notes
- 5:43 Farewell
Another great presentation for basic to intermediate player. Always enjoyed.

Love your work. Solo please!
Thanks Richard, I'll definitely get to this solo one day! And will make a lesson for it for sure.
You should a tutorial on the song Delia's Gone by Johnny Cash.
Checking it out now! Thanks for the suggestion.
Thank you!
I wish you could start marking the numbers of the fingers on the bottom of the chord drawing
I was hoping he do the solo riff😅
U fuckn rock dude thank u! 🤘

New subscriber coming
Thanks for all your lessons 😊. Would like to know if you could do a video on how you do the recording.....and the equipment's used.
Your guitar is a beauty! Which model is that? :)

I can't do b7 and e7 because I have a weak pinky finger 😩👌
Keep practicing bro, you can do it
Gabriel Cordeiro I have partial use of pinky and can do b7 e7 , bar chords are out and other chords that stretch the pinky
i like your teaching style

I’m having a really alternating base and the mute effect any tips?
Good
What guage pick are you using?
What is the tune for the guitsr
What’s the strumming patter?
Mine sounds so bad lol. Idk, I suck but I blame the $40 craigslist guitar
Lol I feel that, I have a Walmart guitar and wrong strings in the wrong places.
No chorus or does this song not have one?
The next thing that was recomended was what if we nuked the moon idk what the hell i was watching for that
What's the tuning sir? 😄
Standard eadgbe
Dababy
I don't understand what you mean with the strumming Slow down plz
Thats the wrong key ??????
Put Capo on 1st fret
ads 15 sec everytime
You really need to focus on the strumming you just have arrows showing the direction and not the actual strings
That "intro riff" is bullshit, all you do is play the "E chord" shape with your second finger on the top E string.
Thanks mate, great lesson 👍
