First band I ever saw in 1977 . Life changing and my life was ruined by music in the end . Stranglers always close to my heart . They did alot of shit like all bands but they did some great great songs .
So much talk about not the originals members and such.. Fair play.. How much i would give to have seen them at their peak with all the originals!! All of you here who have, I am so jealous.. but alas I was to young and it could never be... Only last weekend I saw them here in New Zealand and to be honest they put on a great show and that's as close as I will ever get to experiencing even a fraction of the original experience of this awesome band...Let us enjoy the crumbs that are left for us.
Excellent song, excellent band. Every member is so good: Dave Greenfield, the very talented organist , Jet Black the drummer, J.-J. Burnell the bassist, but also and especially the substitute of Hugh Cornwell, (I forgot his name), whose voice , energy , way of singing and guitar are really fantastic. RIP Dave
For the discussion about line up changes. I doesn't really matters as long as the spirit of the band is kept alive. Others like Motörhead(R.I.P. Lemmy),U.K.Subs or The M3T30RS also changed Bandmembers and still rock!
Hey Mart, I think it is unimportant who replace older members or those that make different projects. Important is that the new guys are corresponding in this Band. I´m a great " german ! " Stranglers Fan and i´m happy that they are still on Tour. Baz is doing a great Job. He´s a great musician and displaced Hugh or Paul awfully good. Ian is doing a great Job too.... All the best to Jet.... I only hope JJ ( fucking greatest Bass player ) and Dave are make music still for a while.
How clear is the bass pedal on this recording, crisp drumming, Barnard is getting better and better, long way to go before he really challenges Jet (Jet-get well soon)
I saw them a few times, early days when they were all together.hugh and menacing jett sadly out of the original line up now,i want to go and see them again next year but i feel its not the same.i miss that raw talent of hugh and jet in the back ground with that thousand mile stare .they will allways be my favorite band ever happy 80th jet
It was one of their trade marks yes, but the band has so many that surely we're not still missing one of them 27 years later! When I hear of people still missing Hugh so badly AND LETS FACE IT HE IS AMAZING. When I hear these comments I always feel like saying well what if Hugh had died in 1990? Would the crowd have rather they simply put away their instruments? Or regenerated?
One of the greatest songs on "Rattus" with "Rattus" itself being the first of five consecutively brilliant studio albums by The Stranglers. Including all the singles, B-sides and solo albums, between 1976 and 1982 the band never put a foot wrong; indeed, just got better and better throughout the period. Following that era, "La Folie" (actually, also 1982) and "Feline" were both good albums and good singles / B-sides came at that time also. "Aural Sculpture" and singles / B- sides were OK. "Dreamtime" and singles / B- sides could only be considered "listenable" whilst "10" plus singles and B-sides were "meh"! I've not bothered with them since Cornwell left the band: wasn't convinced by the John Ellis era and was appalled by the proceeding era with that blonde haired guy fronting (Paul Roberts?). (Don't get me wrong, other than the amazing "Nosferatu" - still one of my all time favourite albums, - Cornwell's solo career has also been very weak in my opinion. Indeed, I suspect Cornwell was the main engine driving The Stranglers progressively further and further into the MOR / AOR territory they ended up occupying from "La Folie" through to "10"). However, I've got to say, this current line up seems pretty good to me and I've watched some really good performances by them on UA-cam. It's not the quality of The Stranglers 1976 to 1982 - but, neither was the last 8 years Cornwell was in the band. I can't speak about the original material this line up has recorded as I've not heard it but, live, I'd certainly entertain going to see them and actually probably will at some point. So... one of my all time favourite bands who meant everything to me as a teenager. I've still got all their 7 and 12 inch singles and albums (plus solo work) 1977 to 1986 on vinyl and would never part with them. (I've obviously also got all the material 1977 to 1985 ish - including solo work - on CD as well). I've still got all the original "Strangled" mags - and related SiS publications up until 1985 ish plus a host of memorabilia such as posters, badges, cuttings, t-shirts and gig programmes covering 1977 to 1985. They were a highly original, vital and marvellous band who have been, in my opinion, callously overlooked by the scribes in the music press whilst contemporaries such as Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Jam, Elvis Costello and even Buzzcocks (all marvellous artists as well) have been critically acclaimed over and above The Stranglers. In reality, and along with The Damned (also historically overlooked in comparison to their contemporaries) those artists listed above (inclusive of The Stranglers of course) were the cream of the crop of first generation UK Punk Rock and all you need to know if the truth be known. There were a myriad of great 45s by also ran - to lesser or greater degree - artists (Generation X, The Only Ones and X-Ray Specs for instance) in that first wave, but those I've listed above were not only the core artists that set the scene of original Punk Rock UK, but, also the only ones with any talent to develop and consistently hold your attention and deliver past summer 1977. There were a few really good "second generation" Uk Punk Rock bands of course, primarily The Ruts and Stiff Little Fingers and, occasionally, maybe The Skids, but, other than these all the really great music that was initiated by Punk came from the "Post Punk" artists whether from the Uk, U.S or elsewhere. Interestingly, a few of those "Post Punk" bands had been active either during, or even prior to, the first wave of Punk Rock but only came into their own following the decline of Punk and, of all of the main stream UK Punk bands I've mentioned above, only The Stranglers straddled both camps as a core band. I regret that I was too young to see the original line-up at their peak (1977 to 1983 IMHO). Some of the UA-cam footage from that period is amazing! I eventually saw the band in 1987 on the Dreamtime tour, and to say I was disappointed would probably be an understatement. I think the band had run out of steam and perhaps Hugh's heart wasn't in it anymore? I've seen the band 6 times with Baz on vocals/guitar and every gig has been a fantastic experience. It's not the original line-up at their peak, but it's pretty bloody good!
To call themselves "The Stranglers" when half the original line-up are missing is ludicrous. Just as Daltrey & Townshend bill themselves "The Who" when in fact their act is a mere "tribute to", this farce you are watching is a Stranglers tribute band, nothing more, nothing less.
+tommy hill its Dave Greenfield and Jean Jaques Burnell my freind,, Jett Black would have had to overdosed on Oil Of Ulay to look that young, may go see them this year tho, they look ok, saw this line up at Glasto a few years back, they were ok...
+Martin Hugh Henley I disagree...I am stoked the line up is finally right and they are playing so well...as a fan of the music...it isnt so much about who is in the band...just that they sound like they should and they sound great. I have great respect for Hugh whom I have met and talked to - he simply has lost it...he became pedestrian...lost the energy and love for the music...these guys are loving it and it shows.
Fair enough, Adrian. It is great if you still enjoy it. Personally, I admire more those who recognise when they have nothing more to give and get out before the staleness & self-parody set in. As a band they had run their course when Hugh bailed. That should have been that, in my opinion. But keep enjoying & keep smiling if these guys do it for you ;)
That's the thing Martin, people, fans do still enjoy smile and pay to see the Stranglers because they love the music. I first snuck in to see them aged 15 in 1980 having bought my first single some 3 or 4 years previously called Peaches; and my love of all things Stranglers has never diminished. I suspect that as long as there is a single member of the original line up up on stage pleasing the fans the audience will keep attending. However if The Stranglers were to choose some of these blindingly brilliant musicians you see emulating their music from here on UA-cam in an attempt to regenerate like Dr Who or something, I'd still go and rock out to the sound. In fact if they do all decide to call it a day; before respecting their decision I'd write a letter asking them to do just that for my Christmas present. They have all lost energy and hair to time, the music though has never lost it's appeal for most of the fans. Except when Paul joined, that was worrying.
Vehicle Service NO No No ....Baz does a great job & good on him , he is bloody good but to say better than Hugh.....that is just plain ridiculous & you know it!
Nobody beats Hugh's snarling voice spitting out the lyrics as they should be... dearly missing him. Baz is a nice bloke and excellent guitarist, but he's not Hugh. At the end they all sing and play Hugh and JJ's music and lyrics.
No... not ridiculous at all... Baz has far more energy than Hugh... particularly in Hugh's final years with the band... I've been a fan since the 70's... since they began
My Favourite Stranglers song of all time, seen the band live so many times including with Hugh! The drummer is amazing here! dx
Will always be my favourite band, R.l.P Dave Greenfield, Fly straight.

Bollox without HUGH
Better with Hugh .
Jean Jaques tone is terrible here, the sound of a hired bass player..
better than the original line up live
+Seven Seer cmon be honest
I regret that I was too young to see the original line-up at their peak (1977 to 1983 IMHO). Some of the UA-cam footage from that period is amazing! I eventually saw the band in 1987 on the Dreamtime tour, and to say I was disappointed would probably be an understatement. I think the band had run out of steam and perhaps Hugh's heart wasn't in it anymore? I've seen the band 6 times with Baz on vocals/guitar and every gig has been a fantastic experience. It's not the original line-up at their peak, but it's pretty bloody good!
Rubbish without Hugh
UwU u
To call themselves "The Stranglers" when half the original line-up are missing is ludicrous. Just as Daltrey & Townshend bill themselves "The Who" when in fact their act is a mere "tribute to", this farce you are watching is a Stranglers tribute band, nothing more, nothing less.
+tommy hill its Dave Greenfield and Jean Jaques Burnell my freind,, Jett Black would have had to overdosed on Oil Of Ulay to look that young, may go see them this year tho, they look ok, saw this line up at Glasto a few years back, they were ok...
+Martin Hugh Henley and better!
Baz is the man . Imo better than Hugh
Vehicle Service NO No No ....Baz does a great job & good on him , he is bloody good but to say better than Hugh.....that is just plain ridiculous & you know it!
Vehicle Service sorry but hugh is better, much better in my opinion. The cornwell days are the best
+Vehicle Service a lot to be said for that
Nobody beats Hugh's snarling voice spitting out the lyrics as they should be... dearly missing him.
Not the stranglers
Sad !
Can you do better...?
HUGH LOOKS TERRIBLE...
Not Hugh, you tool ...
@@sirandrelefaedelinoge lol x we know !
Its missing Hugh's iconic voice and a bit to up tempo, lost that gutteral sound but a reincarnation i suppose
