Spent the first 35 years of my life as a christian. When I finally "saw the light" and realized belief in a god was just something man created thousands of years ago to explain things they couldn't, and to ease their fear of death, it was an epiphany like nothing I've experienced before. 56 now, and truly can't understand why people choose to believe in such nonsense.

Being religious doesn't really mean someone is suffering from a mental illness. There's far more criteria than believing in a deity to diagnose someone with a mental issue. Option 2 - Did the patient's "soul" lift out of its body and stick around to observe the medical procedure's that the patient is completely unfamiliar with and then through magic, essentially gains the knowledge to describe the procedure in detail afterwards, without having any prior knowledge of the procedure and without anyone informing the patient of the procedure either before or after the procedure. I always enjoy seeing theists try to have it both ways with the whole *'choosing'* to believe thing. While Billy boy here makes a passing nod to the world around him supposedly being evidence of his god, he ends up making threats and admonishments that frankly wreak of this misunderstanding that belief is something anyone can simply *'choose'* to do. This is pure unadulterated projection, since in the theist mind they have accepted belief as a concious willful decision and an act of choice. They cannot help trying to foist this supposed *'choice'* onto others. It's as good as a frank admission that their beliefs are NOT based on evidence in the first place. They will only go to the topic of evidence, as a rearguard afterthought if pressed to provide some. At the heart of Abrahamic theology, is the belief, that belief itself, is akin to a willful choice, and that is how they circumvent reason and evidence as the motive.
Indeed, being incapable of even understanding the numerous criteria necessary for belief just makes them all the more hypocritical when referencing choice & free-will as excuses. I always wondered as a child, if I was born and lived somewhere, where I was never taught anything about religion or the bible, if I still would go to hell when I died. That question alone was enough to convince me religion is man-made, otherwise people everywhere no matter how isolated would know all about the bible and Christianity right otherwise those people go to Hell by default for simply never having been told.
If you really want compelling proofs..here are two medical doctors who were both atheists at the time they exprienced leaving their bodies while one is the operating table, and the other was fighting for life during a rowing accident but did not sustain any brain damage despite being submerged in water for a long time.. Case in point: 1. DR. EBEN ALEXANDER, BRAIN SURGEON He only came to know that he had a sister after his near death experience. He was an only child of his adopted parents. His adoption was not disclosed and was kept a secret so he never got to meet his one and only sister who died years ago. How did he find out he had a sister after his NDE? He said during his journey in heaven, he met this woman who had so much love for him. She became his guide during his journey in the spiritual realm. When this brain surgeon came back to life and recovered, he became so curious about the identity of the woman and shared with his parents how he felt so connected, on a soul level, to this woman. His parents then revealed to him that he was adopted and that he had a sister who died years ago..and so to cut the story short, he set out to get more information about his sister and was able to get hold of her picture. He was flabbergasted as the woman in the picture is exactly the same woman who guided him during his journey in the heavenly realm. He became a cganged man after his NDE. He now believes in God. [He used to be an atheist] 2. DR MARY NEIL, AND ORTHOPEDIC DOCTOR She already knew before it even happened that her eldest son will die before her as it was revealed to her by the spiritual beings during her journey in the heavenly realm. True enough, her son died before everyone in the family. Her story: She was submerged into the water for 15- 25 minutes that even medical science can't explain her survival[ considering that she did not have a training to survive under water without oxygen ] She had a kayaking accident in 1999. She and her group kayaked across the treacherous stretch of the river. To make the story short, she got into the very * section of the waterfalls, and as she hit the very bottom of the drop, her boat got pinned and she and her boat got completely submerged into the water. She got stuck and could not move her body, not even her arms. The only thing she could do was to pray. She told God that 'His will be done" and after having uttered that, she said she "felt a very physical sensation of being held and comforted and reassured" She felt that it was "Christ who was holding her and reassuring her." She said she did not even gasp for air and felt more alive than she's ever been even if she's pinned infront of the deck of her boat[being an orthopedic doctor, she said she already knew what part her lower limb got broken, and yet she wasn't feeling any pain. She said she felt her spirit left her body and rose up and out of the river. Then she met these heavenly beings but told her that it wasn't her time yet..so she got back and saw the rescuers pulling her body out giving her CPR. She made it alive despite being submerged nto the water for 15- 25 minutes and had not experienced any brain injury due to lack of oxygen[ Doctors are still clueless how it is even possible as she never had training to survive under water wihout oxygen for such a long stretch of time]

I found my life got SO MUCH easier when I took the time to really think about religion, the contradictions and "proofs" and realized it was all BS. Religion just throws blame on you. According to that book of fiction, the world was perfect until man didn't listen to god and now everything is man's fault. Unless it's a good thing - then god did it. But all the bad stuff is on us. Forget that this guy in the sky can do anything; he just sits there and watches all the shit happen and does nothing to prevent anything. This god is either a) not all powerful, b) doesn't give a flying shit 99% of the time or c) not real.

I heard a sermon once from a Mormon "home teacher" who had visited an inactive member to encourage him to resume church attendance. Being religious doesn't really mean someone is suffering from a mental illness. There's far more criteria than believing in a deity to diagnose someone with a mental issue.
However, it is very human to feel very "attacked" when you've been primed to see your religion as the Arbiter of Truth, and the Only Moral Way. Hence why it was looked into, and every actual study that relied on valid, scientific procedures found that all these spiritual things were just lies or misperceptions. Millions of people believe in Christianity, and we basically know it is false. Just look at the Bible. It is riddled with contradictions, historical inaccuracies, and more damning holes. IDGAF if millions of people believe something. That doesn't make it right.
The human brain is stupid in some ways. I don't doubt many people think they have had supernatural experiences, but there is no evidence for it. If you have evidence, show me. Stop playing around with weird thought experiments and word play. Show me a study where they detected a ghost. Show me a real psychic. Show me a miracle.
As for your last question, who cares? If there is one person who had such an experience, we have no way of knowing it is true. Why do I care? Anyone could make such a claim. I would not stake my life on one person saying their personal experience was fact (unless it aligned with our current understanding of reality). Anyone who would is obviously not acting rationally.
IDK what you mean by "spirit realm". Souls don't have to exist for other supernatural stuff to happen anyway. You're already showing your bias. Miracles or magic could exist without souls, for example. This is always the issue. People look for things that match what they already believe. Show me a single supernatural event (with or without a soul), and I will start paying attention.

Option 2 - Did the patient's "soul" lift out of its body and stick around to observe the medical procedure's that the patient is completely unfamiliar with and then through magic, essentially gains the knowledge to describe the procedure in detail afterwards, without having any prior knowledge of the procedure and without anyone informing the patient of the procedure either before or after the procedure.

I always enjoy seeing theists try to have it both ways with the whole *'choosing'* to believe thing. While Billy boy here makes a passing nod to the world around him supposedly being evidence of his god, he ends up making threats and admonishments that frankly wreak of this misunderstanding that belief is something anyone can simply *'choose'* to do.
This is pure unadulterated projection, since in the theist mind they have accepted belief as a concious willful decision and an act of choice. They cannot help trying to foist this supposed *'choice'* onto others. It's as good as a frank admission that their beliefs are NOT based on evidence in the first place. They will only go to the topic of evidence, as a rearguard afterthought if pressed to provide some. At the heart of Abrahamic theology, is the belief, that belief itself, is akin to a willful choice, and that is how they circumvent reason and evidence as the motive.
Indeed, being incapable of even understanding the numerous criteria necessary for belief just makes them all the more hypocritical when referencing choice & free-will as excuses.
I like to occasionally 'challenge' the ones I get into discussion with, if these particular aspects are brought up, challenge them to "Just Try" Not Believing in 'God' just for the sake of Simply Making an Attempt... but to be sure they don't weasel their way around it I further point out how, in all likelihood, no matter how much effort they put into it, They Cannot Do It & that the most they'll ever get to is a train of thought in which they're *Only Imagining* Themselves as Thinking Things that *They Think* An Atheist Might Think... which is, most often, Nothing At All Like what an Atheist Genuinely Thinks.
I then go on to outline the fact that Belief requires both time & exposure to enough evidence (or its Approximate from the individual's perspective, which in the case of Most Religious, Spiritual, or Supernatural Beliefs that would seem to be "Emotion"), and often among other criteria (such as conviction or moral commitment), before a mind is ever truly both willing & able to believe it; That's not some mere little matter of choice & will, as in order to change such a thing as a religious or ideological belief at the drop of a hat would would require being capable of instantly changing the very basis & foundation of one's own standards & principles (and, often, with little reasonable justification for doing so at the time).

If you really want compelling proofs..here are two medical doctors who were both atheists at the time they exprienced leaving their bodies while one is the operating table, and the other was fighting for life during a rowing accident but did not sustain any brain damage despite being submerged in water for a long time..

1. DR. EBEN ALEXANDER, BRAIN SURGEON
He only came to know that he had a sister after his near death experience. He was an only child of his adopted parents. His adoption was not disclosed and was kept a secret so he never got to meet his one and only sister who died years ago.
How did he find out he had a sister after his NDE?
He said during his journey in heaven, he met this woman who had so much love for him. She became his guide during his journey in the spiritual realm.
When this brain surgeon came back to life and recovered, he became so curious about the identity of the woman and shared with his parents how he felt so connected, on a soul level, to this woman.
His parents then revealed to him that he was adopted and that he had a sister who died years ago..and so to cut the story short, he set out to get more information about his sister and was able to get hold of her picture. He was flabbergasted as the woman in the picture is exactly the same woman who guided him during his journey in the heavenly realm. He became a cganged man after his NDE. He now believes in God. She already knew before it even happened that her eldest son will die before her as it was revealed to her by the spiritual beings during her journey in the heavenly realm. True enough, her son died before everyone in the family.
Her story:
She was submerged into the water for 15- 25 minutes that even medical science can't explain her survival[ considering that she did not have a training to survive under water without oxygen ]
She had a kayaking accident in 1999. She and her group kayaked across the treacherous stretch of the river. To make the story short, she got into the very * section of the waterfalls, and as she hit the very bottom of the drop, her boat got pinned and she and her boat got completely submerged into the water. She got stuck and could not move her body, not even her arms. The only thing she could do was to pray. She told God that 'His will be done" and after having uttered that, she said she "felt a very physical sensation of being held and comforted and reassured" She felt that it was "Christ who was holding her and reassuring her."
She said she did not even gasp for air and felt more alive than she's ever been even if she's pinned infront of the deck of her boat[being an orthopedic doctor, she said she already knew what part her lower limb got broken, and yet she wasn't feeling any pain. She said she felt her spirit left her body and rose up and out of the river.
Then she met these heavenly beings but told her that it wasn't her time yet..so she got back and saw the rescuers pulling her body out giving her CPR. She made it alive despite being submerged nto the water for 15- 25 minutes and had not experienced any brain injury due to lack of oxygen[ Doctors are still clueless how it is even possible as she never had training to survive under water wihout oxygen for such a long stretch of time]

What I don't understand is, religious folks (like Wild Bill) claim that if you believe in god/jesus, he will set you free. Set you free from what, precisely? What about these incidents related by many surgeons and nurses about patients who were being resuscitated or being operated on in the hospital, and yet when they woke up ,they were able to relate to doctors and nurses what was being done to them in detail during surgical operation and during resuscitation.
They claimed to have separated from their body and were actually watching their physical body lying on the operating table while suspended in mid air. Considering that they are heavily sedated, sleeping while on the operating table, there is no way they can discuss with clarity the detailed procedures done to them.
There are even those who were able to relate the conversation that went on between doctors and nurses during the operation, at time they were fully sedated.

I found my life got SO MUCH easier when I took the time to really think about religion, the contradictions and "proofs" and realized it was all BS. Religion just throws blame on you. According to that book of fiction, the world was perfect until man didn't listen to god and now everything is man's fault. Unless it's a good thing - then god did it. But all the bad stuff is on us. Forget that this guy in the sky can do anything; he just sits there and watches all the shit happen and does nothing to prevent anything.
This god is either a) not all powerful, b) doesn't give a flying shit 99% of the time or c) not real.
and the answer is C... if he was all mighty, he could do away with evil, and all that is bad. He could make the world a nice place to live, he could get rid of the devil and hell and leave just heaven, but it didnt happen that way...

I heard a sermon once from a Mormon "home teacher" who had visited an inactive member to encourage him to resume church attendance.
The answer was, "I used to believe but when I grew up, I realized that Jesus really didn't want me to be his sunbeam."
The problem, the elder said, was that the inactive member had arrested development. Instead of growing and maturing in the gospel, his understanding was still in Primary and Sunday school.
Whenever I think of this sermon and try to peel away the layers of irony, my mind spins. Any time a theist tells me my atheism is childish, I think of this sermon.
