Same. When I watch this review the first time, I commented afterwards about Howl's. The day they'd make it a live-action movie is the day I will physically go watch it in a cinema, tbh. I haven't gone to watch a movie in the cinemas for years now, & is wondering how they'd pull Howl's for real.

You never say you're over adult or "kids" media (well unless you think you're too old for it, which is silly since the fear of being childish is one of the most childish things of all), so why would you say you're over young adult media? You could say you're over young adult dystopias, which would make me agree with you.

There is also something to be said about film advertising. Flooding the airways with Ads is the worst thing you can do, and the reason is very very simple. too many ads causes us to eventually subconsciously ignore them. As such people dont even know when the film will debut, missing the release date messages.

I think the stars were fine, but the story needed to be better told. You shouldn't have to read the books to understand the movie. A good movie will make you want to go out and read the books. Releasing this in late Feb or March might have been helpful. But perhaps they should have planned it with a smaller budget, more time spent on human interactions than big screaming moving machines and quirkly tech. Hindsight is always 20/20.

Mortal Engines was my favourite book as a teen and this movie watched like someone had skimmed the book 20 years ago and then wrote the script without so much as looking at a sparknotes of the plot. I'd gone with a friend who'd quickly skimmed through the book before we went to the cinema and even she hated it, even with none of the history or love that I had she could still recognise that the book was infinitely better and that this movie just didn't even try as an adaptation.

      Man, this is weird.
For whatever reason, probably something with the way my brain is wired. I can't enjoy books, fictional stories of course. I can read books for information just fine. But if I'm trying to read to get immersed in a story, I can't. I don't know why, I used to be able to. I used to read books all the damn time. Then literally over the course of about a week, I lost that ability. It makes no sense to me, I don't get it. When I try to read a book now I just kinda can't get into it, can't feel the characters, the story, nothing. It's like trying to sleep but you can't fall asleep.
Literally lost the ability to read fictional books

I remember reading this when I was like 12 and the series as a whole.
I think the main issue is it was a story meant for kids, that they tried to translate into a more adult film.
It made a great book for a younger audience. Not a good movie for a wider audience.
Plus there were a lot of important plot details they missed, because it was a rather complex plot that would be impossible to condense into a 2 hour film.
Reading the book again after I saw this movie, now 26 I also realized I mostly didn't care for it as much because I wasn't a kid any more.
It was mostly nostolgia that made me like it as one of the first real books I ever read. Not that it was a particularly good book.

      SPOLER ALERT!!!
I mean. It was made for everyone, probably more mature. The books, I mean. But I read it at 12 as well. The ending isn’t the happiest, but it is so right. Mortal Engines is an amazing book because it doesn’t care about what the reader wants to happen, it does what would realistically happen. The ending of the series is so sad, but it fits. Mortal Engines isn’t a series about 1-dimensional villains fighting the Mary Sue with a love triangle. It actually makes sense, the villains are some of the best characters in fact. Pennyroyal is a bit of a stereotype, but he’s written well. I love the revenge in the series, as it’s not made to seem amazing. It just seems... like another death. Important characters die just like the unnamed ones. The books have characters who have clear, yet logical motivations. Shrike, who is the villain at first, becomes a hero. Hester is never made out to be a good person and she kills people without care. She doesn’t kill much when Tom is around, however, because she wants him to still love her. The books are better than the movies could ever be.
Edit: I also mainly watched the movie because I wanted to see the books given form. But it was pretty bad as a book adaptation. Amazing movie, bad book adaptation.

Actually star power hasn't been a factor in contributing to movie success for the recent years, moviegoers have been getting more and more savvy, if a movie is crap, word of mouth spreads and people are less likely to watch it despite it having star power. Look at Robin Hood for example with Taron Egerton and Jamie Foxx, a Wrinkle in Time with Oprah Winfrey and Reese Witherspoon, Skyscrapper with the Rock, The Nutcracker and the Four Realms with Keira Knightley.
All had super stars, all flops.
If a movie sucks, people won't go to see it, regardless if it has stars or not. This isn't the 50s or the 90s, movie stars won't save your crappy movie anymore.

This is the problem of such movies. They build a world which has very awkward art style and they want you to love it just based on trailer. But you have no connection to such worlds, there is no relationship development and if you've seen Howls Moving Castle, it's even worse for you, cause its a ripoff from "your" franchise. So there is basically nothing why you would go and see it, cause everything seems distant, grotesque and unknown. You just don't connect. When it's transformers, Aquaman, regular sci-fi in space, you always have something to follow, something you already know. But this is completely different weird universe you need to learn about and the trailer doesn't do any job in that for you. You are more like "wtf". Yeah, it can be fun, but do you want to risk it? Especially when the only part of the plot which is familiar (a bad guy, mother revenge, strong female character, red scarf...) seems so bad and cliché? Nah. Skip it, steal it.

My husband, curiously. He really wanted to see it. He thought it looked really cool. Important to note that my husband is super down-to-earth and not actually a fantasy/ sci-fi fan. His reading is usually confined to textbooks. He likes building cars for fun. He does watch anime. Not the demographic they were probably aiming at. I'm the fantasy/ sci-fi fan. I even read YA occasionally and this movie's trailer did absolutely nothing to get me interested enough to buy tickets.

Did they use the entire budget on the CGI? I saw the movie and it wasn’t that great. It looked good, but the story telling was pure garbage. The problem with these big budget movies is that they usually go over and they forget about the actual movie. They forget they actually need a script and great story telling. They bank on their CGI and big budget sets to make up for it.

The books are amazing, and I'm not surprised Hollywood fucked the pooch with this. It would've been better as a miniseries instead of the cliffnotes/fanfiction version of the story this movie gives people. The one thing I will say is that they did do a great job of showing what the book describes. :/ It cost a ton of money, but it is a decent enough visual guide. Although Hester's face is supposed to be more jacked than it is. Like one half of it is basically supposed to be so gnarled and unsightly that she always covers it.

Honestly if you read the books this movie is an absolute disappointment, they changed alot of the story that just made it really confusing.
Like half way through they just change everything, originally airhaven is attacked, Tom and Hester make it into a balloon and are followed by Grike or Shrike from the movie, they trick him and find them selfs in the rustwaters, where the mud is so bad towns usually dont make it back. They get into a fight with Grike and a suburb goes by and they just barely make it on to the suburb. Now this is called Tunbridge Wheels and it is a pirate suburb, the mayor wants to raid airhaven that has landed on black island and basically they fail horribly and grike gets killed here. Obviously in the movie this never happens and it would've helped the movie so much.

No its kindda like mad max. Its set on a post war earth after a devastating nuclear/biological/conventional war where a lot of the advance technologies have been lost so you get a lot of scavengers pocking around the "old world" hence why London found a devastating piece of pre war technology a lot of the plot from the other books actually revolves around pre war super weapons or STALKERS. Seeing the trailers (indeed many times), I was excited to see this movie. It looked like a fun, interesting new fantasy world to dive into. Seeing it was kinda disappointing though. I still like the world the movie took place in, but the story was bland and predictable. It was all very by the books. Besides that, I felt like we didn't get enough worldbuilding. Every time people moved around in London, I wished they would slow down and actually show us how a city on wheels works, but they never did. An extra half hour to explore the world in more detail and more risk in the script might have fixed this movie for me, but now it's just.. one of those movies. Oh yeah, I watched that, I forgot.

I'm not sure anymore after watching the "Goblin Slayer" anime. I'm still a little mind F***** over how they managed to make that into an anime and somehow managed to strip it of almost everything that actually made the comic half way decent. That Anime was hilariously bad because they skipped like 2/3rds of the source material but the funny thing is that almost everything they chose to cut out where actually like some of the best parts of the comic.

And yet it is one of the most loved animes of this season. Who knew. Honestly, if you haven't realized by now that the Anime are just advertisements for the light novels and probably manga then you haven't been paying attention to the anime community.
Unless the series is finished or so well loved that it becomes super popular in the west, it won't be a good anime series. That is why Fullmetal got a redo since it was so popular that they actually remade it to fit the actual manga. That is why One-punch man sticks true to the story, the west fucking loved it. That is why Death Note became so popular and actually finished.
And that is why shit like Berserk or Goblin Slayer will never get a true anime adaptation, it is too shocking and not really popular for a lot of people. Money always talks.

Eh screw the rape, which was actually a key plot point that's somehow missing. I'm More disappointed in the fact that they got rid of most of the funny as hell blatant references to 'Advanced Dungeon's and dragons' which where actually some of the more funny moments in that comic.Though actually When I watched that I kind of though it was missing some plot points when it came to the rape thing. Those where -actually- mostly plot related things. Like missing the scene where his mother and sister are being raped and tortured while he was watching is kind of a stepping stone of the storyline. Actually the rape thing was kind of secondary though.

The in canon reason in the books for the floating cities not being dangerous is because they are highly flammable. The gas they use inside them lights up, so no electronics, no flames, and nothing that can emit sparks are allowed into the floating cities to avoid sending everything up in flames. They touch on that in the movie... In a very hamfisted way.
The world that existed before this saga, in canon, is briefly mentioned in Fever Crumb. You sort of have this weird race of ultra modified humans with feline aspects to them who had altered carbon like mind transference hardware.
