Simon is such a master at constructing a solo that builds and tells a story. He first blew my mind in 1980 and is still doing it now!
The man is a consummate drummer with such awesome, tasteful playing. Such finesse! I could listen to Simon Phillips for hours!
Agree... even though this drum roll is a liiiitle long...
@@raimundoarce7014 !
Veto!
This your way of perception! I think it is a bit short!

@@ahappything7850 Hahaha!... Is just me and my "anxiety" for more "action"...
Greetings!
One of the most creative drummers on earth, i think.
It’s fun to see Simon and Tama take off on this journey towards a new addition drum/tom. I love the trust, ingenuity, and adventure.
Been listening to Phillips for yrs...ALWAYS phenomenal!!!
Mr Simon no words could explain the magic of art and music you create Beyond extrordinary thank you
Muuricio Degollada well said!!!!
Remember, this is the first of four parts. He starts off with great snare work and slowly builds over four parts. Keeps it interesting slowly giving more & more. Great composition and great execution!
If they listen to what he plays
Rather than which drum
They'll be Allright
Simon Philips drum God! he's been on top of the game for over 40 yrs love him to bits!
Love Simon's style.. I also enjoy the fact that he still goes old school on the bass drum muffling, placing a towel close to the head, opposed to an evan's eq pad, or a different head choice like a Remo Powersonic batter head.. It's what retains his signature and very distinct sound..
some may think this is boring, be patient and relax , it takes time to make a gourmet meal. you have to watch all four parts. loving the drums and drumming helps too. it's also boring watching the sun rise and set, but it's very beautiful.
I never get bored watching your mom!
All those toms, yet no melodic input. BOOOOORING!
Could there BEE any more drum rolls in this video?
Loll it wasnt that boring though : v. Just kiddn Xd
what i like him most is his dynamics. we can feel it honestly.fast, creativeness, unique style of drumming, and very technical
I wish this had more snare work.
Batera gñde lujo
I clicked 6 min in and still buzzing 🙄 he’s kinda boring
@@matthewstewart2228 Do you know who Simon Philips is?
Do you know anything about drums??
I don't think so!
Lmfao
@@ericgold8500 he’s boring AF
that feeling when u close your eyes and just groove from the heart...
There's one word for this...... Feel. It's sublime to listen to, shamazing technique and talent
Just a JOY to watch and listen to!:) Thanks so much for sharing!!!:)
I love TAMA, I have 1983 10PC Superstar concert edition. That is a beautiful 40th set. WOW
Simon wows me at those odd time signatures. Best drummer!
Eugene Vinzee
With Hiromi I think I’ve caught him playing
Two different odd time signatures simultaneously. She does it effortlessly.
But she’s an alien, she has two brains.
Maybe she brought an extra for him. 👽
The amount of control this guy has is beyond me, I can never get THAT quiet on a snare 😂
People complaining about this part 1 is like someone reading the first quarter of a book and being surprised they don't have a plot or climax yet...
Indeed. Those people are so impatient.
Yeah, 10 minutes of entirely snare drumming on a drum kit with like 8 toms is greeaaaaaat.
I have 1982 TAMA Super Stars Concert Edition 10 PC set and its hard to get parts for them these days.
Simon Phillips is one of my Fav and love those TAMA
What A Drummer ! Silent Killer ! He knows when to say what .. Great great Playing . so much of patience . Not just hitting all the toms or cymbals cause they r part of his kit. Just watch part 2 ! Melodious drumming . Hats off .
The master of dynamics!
12:00 he hit a tom for the first time... respect!!!
Correction...played😏

The better I get the farther away Simon Phillips gets.
naccibobacci Amen...
Yes he is the best!!
How to tell an amazing story with the drums...
By demonstrating his skill on the snare(s) showcases Simon's technique coupled with dynamics. It's an intended approach, if you will, towards the drum solo. It's not as easy when you think about controlling your tendency to auto-play the toms. As the video approaches the ending he goes into the toms which was edited out. I've been following Simon Phillips for quite some time and he surely plays the toms extremely well. This is the artist aspect of approaching a drum solo and Phillips is truly an artist on the kit. Lots of thought and energy went into just that segment of the solo.
There's a lot going on here when taken time in really listening in. For one, his alternating between the top limbs (hands) with the bottom (bass drum) are intricate patterns that don't clash and retains the groove throughout the solo. There is a continuity that permeates all sections of the solo - It's like speaking with various tones and volume in other words Phillip's seasoned approach to soloing is not merely unpacking the kitchen sink, but is a wealth of dynamics, technique, skilled intricacies and conserved ( harnessed power) presenting his audience a musical voice of it's own....get that.
My take,
Rac
Hello Rac !
I got it man. Thanks for your brilliant comment!
Rudi Rastlos
This one goes to all of those who believe good drumming equals a million notes per second and fills as fast as they could do.
Remember, kids: feeling > everything else
Luiz Marcos ..........remember kids: opinions are like assholes. Everyone’s got one.
i was there - it sounds great
Ya have to think of this as a "mini-drum concert". Not sure why the uploader split into 4 parts but if have you have the patience, listen to all 4 parts as 1 long drum composition, with many different sections. It's a great overview of the SP vocabulary.
I tested 4 drums brands at the store. Tama, DW, Pearl, and Gretsch. The tom was an 8x12. Tama won.
Awesome drumming! 🎼👍🎶👍
amazing drummer the best
Conscious drummer, real conversation. 🙏🎶
if you are so pissed off at his lack of using the whole kit just watch part 2. you'd like it much more
i like the sound of the snare drums. thats the kind of snare i want to add on my kit.
Simon Phollips me encanto com o som desse mestre. Fiquei feliz quando fiquei sabendo que o Steve Lukathe tinha colocado ele no comando das baquetas do toto. Pois eu sou fã do toto desde quando eu nasci. Estudei uma video aula do Simon e muita coisa em mim melhorou. Estamos juntos Simon. André Alves Estamos ae.
God! Amazing. Best drummer
Great! Thanx! Rolf @ Simon, I love you , for me you are the best!
First saw Simon in 1980 touring Beck's There&Back album.
People tell me I kept muttering his name in my sleep for about five years afterward. Even my drumset turned into a replica of his.
I'm sure you know. But he played with Toto. After Jeff pacaro.passed away. Jeff gave us the Rosanna shuffle.
SImon is great! But a solo where they show his face more than they show his hands, really? The video producer isn't a drummer, obviously.
And it often shows footwork at the exact moment when it's far more important to show what Simon is doing with snare and hi-hat. The producer really has no idea.
u can blame cameramen instead of producer
Never seen better camera work...
😂
Wow. KING!
Jeff Porcaro & Simon Phillips, Best drumers on the world!!! Toto Best Band!!! End
Internet, do your thing...
Dennis chambers.
There has has better be some epic climax in part two after this budget snare jerking
Off to a slow and slightly raggedy start (I've heard smoother rolls) - but he definitely dropped it in the pocket going forward, proceeding to show incredible hand and foot speed (doing perfect triples at a speed most drummers would need a double pedal setup to pull off- but as the camera plainly shows, he's working the hit hat at the same time with the other foot). This solo struck me as being completely impromptu (although it's possible that this is the case with ALL his solos- nothing pre-planned, just stream of conscious playing, so sometimes its supre-cohesive, other times maybe a little less so, but all the time totally in synch, and incredibly skillful.
I'm sure he's glad that he ultimately won you appreciation and approval. LOL!!
Yes!!! PRO SP!!!+Tama sandsGreat!!!
I wish I knew all these little nuances like the muffling in the drums, etc. and all his major techniques while I played drums over the years. Ok, I never played drums.
King Of Drums
If you want to hear him play metal, listen to Judas Priest’s Sin After Sin album.
SIMON PHILLIPS........ HUGEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
I love the open-armed playing - very unusual to see that
no need to watch his lessons anymore you've got everything you need here: open handed playing, dynamics,...
The information in the set configuration is incorrect.
The actual snare drum array in the video is:
Main: 14", probably the Gladiator (5.5x14).
Left: 12", probably the Pageant (5x12).
Right: 10", uncertain.
A fanatic might find further info with digging.
before making a stupid comment about "only snare", watch the other parts...
Listening to Simon is like meditation...I don't care if the only drum he ever played again was snare...It'd still be a joy to listen to:)
I got bored after two minutes of drum roll, no thanks...
Can anyone on here tell me what Tama line these are and/or what wood? Also--for a bonus--which A. Zildjians these are and their sizes? Cheers
I gotta feva and the only cure is more snare drum! His rudimentary skills are spectacular!!!
amazing...12 mins in until he hits a drum other than snare and base...tom free...Very Creative!!!!
Strong!
Simon's drumming is really interesting.
Great drum skills
I wonder what his snare sounds like?
The fundamentals of rudiments is on the snare that's where it all begins for all you beginners that put Simon Phillips down.
Love TAMA
Elegant!!!
It's hard for me to believe that, in the "background", there's a STEADY 1/8 note tempo, that's never broken, no matter how crazy his rhythms get. To appreciate the full effect, I sit at my desk, tapping this steady 1/8 note beat - tap,tap,tap,tap- and it stays in synch with everything he's playing- you could be there with a cowbell or sticks, just going "click, click, click..." and it would perfectly compliment his playing- while he's accenting the downbeat, then the upbeat, then the accent is on the rest between beats, I mean, he's a machine.
I tried to tell him that. But you think he listened. NO SIR. 😁
Big Digs!!Cheers!!
9:06 Whoa Simon crossed his hands! Blasphemy!!!
Wildan 0o0
12:00 - Did he just yell at himself for hitting a TOM too early?
Snares are singing man 🤘🏽
funny to play a solo almost exclusively on the snare(s) with such a big kit.
He is the GOD: Gorgeous On Drums 😎
Are they all ambassadors? Even the snares?
Impressive but we almost don't know how this mega drum sounds in the Tama anniversary haha. Simon is such amazing as troll.
Makes me want to go dig up some Toto videos
Which ride please?
little oopsie there at 7:26. Oh well his F ups sound better than my done wells. lol
R-E-S-P-E-C-T !!!
@L'1♫♪
❤
LEVEL = LEONIDAS !! 300 FIGHTER JEJEJEJEJE ROCK ON MASTER !!!!
Effortless and effective playing Sublime percussionist indeed along with Gavin Harrison
Only Snares????
drum very god
Off night for simon...
simon phillips is verry best in Wold
I could do that. I just don't want to show off. Wow this guy is no joke.
simon is a monster..
C'mon man... just one fucking roll please....
I need more Cow Bell
Great hair.
lol
Gandalf!
His chops though 💦
Simon reminds
You miss playing the full drums
Snare's 14, 12, 10... cool!!
Do you know what exact type of snare drum is that 10"?
Love Simon Phillips but seriously, get a new camera manager. I don't care what his face looks like, I wants to see what he is doing on the drums.
Daniel Lopez Singels, Doubles, Paradiddles and Flames! ;-)
Daniel Lopez for real show where the sound is happening
You are blessed to look upon the face of a god...
don't stroke thoes toms??? why set up that toms?
Buzz rolls for an hour, with a serious looking drummer face.
4min. only snare ........................................
Perfect technique. One thing I learned playing drums. Do not look to the drums when you are playing!! Many great drummers make that mistake.
Cristian Perez It depends on the drummer, and personal preference. In some cases, it helps, especially if you're on a drum kit that's not you're own or one that you're not accustomed to. In other cases, it helps when trying to orchestrate a fill, and get each note where it should be.
