This is the exact polar opposite of what you usually see in those guitar center drum-off solo's: a musical approach to drumming, that tells you a story. It has dynamics, feel, tension, it's everything that drumming should be about. Not the speed oriented chop-fest that you usually see. Personally, I much prefer this approach.
You know, a lot of these drum-off duet things are just exercises in ego wankery for each drummer to one-up the other.. but this GH+SP duet is just beautifully musical. Two stellar drummers having a blast - what more could you want?
this is insane, it shoudnt even be called a drum off, theyre not outdrumming eachother there working together with the rythms that they choose and its an incredible result how they combine two kits to make a musical approach to a drum off, love it, gavins my favorite tho
Noah Reemer This isn't really part of the "Drum-Off" so the title is misleading... They're not competing, they're playing together. You can hear a lot of "Sound of Muzak" in what they're doing. I agree that it comes together incredibly well, but that's the point.
This is why these two are at the very top of the drumming game - its not all about chops - both can play really fast if they need to but this duo is soo musical and the tuning of the drums is great
Gotta be one of the best drum duets I have ever heard. I don't mean who can outplay the other type, an actual duet. Phil Collins and Chester Thompson did wonderful ones, this beats them as far as I am concerned.
Absolutely! It's Chester and Phil updated - very clearly inspired. But don't forget: Chester and Phil did it first and it was a little more "crowd pleasing" concert moments as opposed to be as virtuoso as possible. This is outside of a band concert and of course, concentrating on highly detailed, expressive ultra-precision drumming, Simon and Gavin are both a notch (or two) above Chester and Phil - but the latter were the "teachers". :-) I'm sure Simon and Gavin love the work of Chester and Phil. It shows :-)
Inspired drumming. It's a pleasure to watch two unbelievably talented drummers working together having checked their egos in at the cloakroom. Wonderful.
Great stuff. No stupid willy-waving ego buffing, just music. Listening through for the third time, I imagined I could hear the drum sounds morphing into a bass guitar, a keyboard part, and even a 'scat' vocalist in places. Remarkable!
I like the fact that Simon goes with a very sophisticated metronome background for Gavin and letting him go wild and free. Two best sounding best tuned drumers out there complementing each other.
A lot of "Sound of Muzak", one the my favorite grooves from PT, love it
I noticed that too!
Phillips playing the melody on the toms ahaha
fuckin beautiful

100% agreed!!!! I'm quite tired of chop oriented speed marathons, with no backstory! This was a joy to watch!
you read my mind. this is the first drum off I haven't hated. love these guys. Gavin is the best of all time imo
+Jake Frierson he's got my vote. Amazing. !!
Perfectly stated.
the best comment
That part where they complement the double snare hit with each other was FRICKING AWESOME My favorite section of this double drum solo
Aye
That beat displacement Gavin did in the first couple minutes was soooo sick! These are amazing videos.
In certain parts you can actually see Simon counting to stay in time. That's a true musician right there.
You know, a lot of these drum-off duet things are just exercises in ego wankery for each drummer to one-up the other.. but this GH+SP duet is just beautifully musical. Two stellar drummers having a blast - what more could you want?
Nothing is my answer!!!
...that is Simon Phillips playing the PIANO!!
True musicians
Simon is right on the money....' His Feels'...Pockets.....' are just awesome. You da' man.

Gavin seems to be not getting old. Lol.
Watching this in 2019.
2010 - 2019. Look at his looks. lol
I've only recently heard of Gavin Harrison and I can't get enough of his drumming style. It's so much how I play drums but nearly as technical as him.
it might be the best drumset duet i ever heard.
Agreed. I call Simon and Gavin duets: Chester and Phil updated. Becasue they are very obviuosly inspired by their older drum buddies of Genesis.
This is why these two are at the very top of the drumming game - its not all about chops - both can play really fast if they need to but this duo is soo musical and the tuning of the drums is great
So musical! This is probably the best drum duet I have ever seen...not just trading solos but building on what each other are playing
Wow, both of Britain's best drummers in one solo. Awesome.

Two of the best,for sure!
Gavin is the Leonardo DiCaprio of the drum world.
Pls don't insult Gavin
Simon Phillips must be the 'Dustin Hoffman' then. 😉
+Kris Sambero No No, everyone knows that Simon is the Michael Caine of the drum world.
why not? Stanlio & Ollio
No no...
Simon is Peter Capaldi Doctor Who !!!
Inspired drumming. It's a pleasure to watch two unbelievably talented drummers working together having checked their egos in at the cloakroom. Wonderful.
2 of the best drummers who ever lived playing together... outstanding!!!!!!
i love and respect how simon phillips doesn't use this solo to go all fancy but instead mostly provides the foundations for gavin to embellish
There are drum battles and there is music. This is the latter. Two of the best to grace the instrument.
The 2 best drummers on Earth.
This is the best video of two drummers playing togheter I've ever seen. Ridicolous.
Simply two of the most brilliant, humble drummers of all time!
So musical. And it's got a groove. Really love this kind of drumming.
Two of the best ever and two of my faves.
I detect the Sound of Muzak groove in the beginning. Oh and this is the sickest drum collaboration I've ever seen. They're so selfless!
This is World Class!!!!!!
Amazing! I love how they go into 7/4 time and are still in sync.
Two of my ever favourite drummers together in a great duet!
Making music not just showing off..that's what sets these two apart..beautiful!!!!!!!!
Two gentleman of the drumming world, playing beautifully together to create some funky rhythms and put on a great show for the audience 👏👏
the video quality is great
the drumming is great
the sound is great
THIS IS PERFECT!!!
Two of my favorite drummers!!
Tanks
Watching this live was mind numbing!!!
These videos are GENIUS. Genius videos of Genius drummers!
It isn't a drum solo
It's a drum duo !
Way better.
That was massive
2 of my absolute favorites right here!
One of the more musical drum solos/duets I've heard. Lovely stuff.
The tom melody and the main beat in 7/4 that Gavin is playing is actually Sound of Muzak by Porcupine Tree ;)
It is not only drums but music. Amazing.
1 of the best duets ive ever seen, honestly
englands best 2 drummerstogether it cant get any better both awesome fantastik
How cool is this ... 2 of the most gifted drummer on 1 stage! Awesome!
beautiful!
someone's gotta hold the beat - that's how they get along.
Great stuff. No stupid willy-waving ego buffing, just music. Listening through for the third time, I imagined I could hear the drum sounds morphing into a bass guitar, a keyboard part, and even a 'scat' vocalist in places.
Remarkable!
This is such an awesome duet. Amazing
Great musicians. Rhytmic precise(no serious flammin...) and leaving space for each other... Nice :-)
fantastic
theese guys really make a great duo.
I love this; two master craftsmen at work together.
Mind blown - what an incredible duet by two absolutely top notch musicians! Words simply fail me beyond that. I’ll be watching this over and over.
BEAUTIFUL
Both of my favorites drummers!
03:03 The next groove just blew my mind. Simon is insane...
+DarkKage HD After practicing for a month I can finally do that! He is just so amazing. How did he even come up with that groove?
@@darkkevindu6982 You've got some knowledge man :D
these two were meant to play together! they could come with some amazing things
Man.. Spot on drumming.. I don't see Simon listening to a click! Amazing!
Great drum duet. The Queen must be proud.
This is amazing!
So much awesome on one stage!
This was just perfect. Simon leading, Gavin grooving. And flip flop.
2 absolute beast period
They work so well together. Those TAMA and Sonor kits sound great. It’s not even really a drum-off, it’s really them just kinda playing together 😂
Simon's tom-toms sound sooooooo good! And both drummers are killers. Wow!
Gavin is doing all the work here !
that was incredible
awesome...what great professionals
Such great talented players!
Phenomenal duet. a joy to watch
Masters at work...
The human delays! how fantastic!
Two great British drummers.
One of the best drum duo
part 4 is the best! Daaaaaaaaaamn!
This Drum solo has a central idea similar to Porcupine Tree's song The Sound Of Muzak (7/8 and the groove)
yeah was the exact beat in the beginning only faster.
And Simons is playing the rhythm and "sort of" the notes of the guitar from the song.
They played of each other so well
that was great!
100% epic! absolutely perfect *.*
Just curious about those 50+ negative votings thus far: What‘s to dislike about two of the greatest drummers this world has ever seen?
My Mind lays in tatters across my living room floor as it is utterly BLOWN
wow these guys are really entertaining
I'm not a drummer but I'm a huge fan of his creativity and melodic style.
I love they
Excellent!!
there is no better combination than these killer drummers.
0:20-0:48 The Sound of Muzak?
This is indeed the motive in the whole duet
A lot of sound muzak actually
Definitely a cheeky smile from Phillips at about 5.54 in the show stopping moment that is Space Boogie, so dramatic. What a killer.
I want so bad Gavin Harrison's drum set
I like the fact that Simon goes with a very sophisticated metronome background for Gavin and letting him go wild and free. Two best sounding best tuned drumers out there complementing each other.
speechless!
Porcupine's Sound of Muzak :D
2 of my favorite
AND THE WINNER IS.... HUMANITY!
And ears.
WORLD CLASS!!!!!!!!!!!! :D
FUckinnn awesomeeee!!!!!!
awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The sound of muzak intro on the toms is sick!
Dos poetas del silencio y el pulso ... volcánicamente reunidos ....!!
