The last one, the one big flaw there is that it's baked. You can do it one pot in a stove. Brown chicken (whole pieces), no need to cook through, set aside. Put in bacon, brown, set aside. Put in peppers and onions, let it sweat till tender. Chop chicken (should be cool by now). Put back everything in the pot, and add the liquids and pasta. Simmer till pasta is cooked. Done. Also, just chicken thigh over beast. So much better in a slow cooked dish like this.
My thoughts exactly. The onion needs to caramelize, you need the fond from the bacon...just some small changes would infuse the cream with the flavours that will never come out with just baking it all together. It just goes to show, if you don't know how to treat your ingredients properly, you end up with yuck.
Absolutely correct! It could have been easily made on the stove top. Or do as David suggested if you want to hold it for a while and bake it later.
yes, and i would cut some cherry tomatoes in halves and put these on top, so when you put it in an oven the juices will come out and give some extra flavour to the sauce
Came looking for this comment lol, thank you!! It’s honestly annoying af that people with less cooking experience/knowledge than random UA-cam commenters have the gall to make instructional recipe videos as though they have something to teach the rest of us.
maybe even cook the bacon first. take bacon out of the pan and cook the chicken in the bacon grease? yes ur arteries will cry but this dish is already loaded with fat so why not lol
On that last recipe, I really liked your thoughts on what you'd do differently to make it come out good. And that got me thinking that I'd love to see some videos where you take recipes like this that only give a mediocre (or worse) end product, make them, discuss their flaws, and then make a tastier version with your own tweaks/tips/modifications.
I think a lot of people would benefit from seeing how big of a difference stuff like that would make and how easy it would be to do (especially if it came together quick enough that you didn't even need to dirty the baking dish or wait for all that to slowly come up to temp in the oven).
I’d like to see something like that too.
i was coming to comment this exact thing!!!
Literally just commented this myself, except you worded it so much better than I did haha
I have made a similar comment on a few of his videos!
Agreed! That would be so helpful in knowing how to improvise food on the go
With very few exceptions, I feel like every one of those "one-pan pasta bake" recipes could be done better on the stovetop. Crisp the bacon, remove some of the fat, brown the chicken, set it aside, saute your veggies in the same pan so they absorb those flavors, deglaze with water or stock or wine or whatever, re-add the meats along with the pasta, let it all boil until the pasta is done, finish with cream. You'll end up with a better meal, and it's no more intensive than having to take a big heavy casserole dish out of the oven every 10 minutes to stir it. Same amount of dirty dishes, too!
I was thinking the same thing. And, with a cast iron pan, you can even get fancy and give it a little bread crumb or cheese topping, and put it under the broiler for a minute. Way better result without any more labor or cleanup.
I want to see you try Joshua Weissman’s American vs. Korean fried chicken from a day or two ago! 😋😋
Yess!!! I, was salivating throughout the whole video!
He could also compare them to other Korean fried chicken recipes (like Maangchi‘s or Aaron and Claire‘s) and other American fried chicken recipes :)
YESSS
AND!! Compare it to Sam the Cooking Guys american vs korean chicken!
@@nicolekraft175 YES
I feel like you could do a heck of a series on *fixing* tiktok recipes. Like, doing the recipe as shown, then doing it *right* like with the suggestions you had for fixing the one-pan chicken bake.
What do you call a custard when it goes bad?
_Off-pudding_
A perfect way to describe 1996 is the mascot Izzy from the Summer Olympics that year. He's not an animal, he's not a human, he's not even an object. He's...something. It represents that 1996 was a different year than the rest in that decade
Thanks Kim Jong-un!
LET THEM GO
Yeah I'm the 1997 generation and it definitely feels like we're the stop gap between the two generations, like a weird millennial-zoomer hybrid. I like to call people my age z-boomers.
Chicken dish won't kill you but totally agree everything needs to be browned and seasoned before adding it in and add in less cream. It's not like you are saving tons of time anyway if you gotta watch it and stir it every 15 minutes anyway. I think cajun seasoning would be really good on it. I also don't really see the purpose behind baking it either and not uncovering it. The liquid is never going to thicken. Actually I want to make that dish and fix it.
Re: The annoying editing, Tiktok pays out per 1000 views apparently, so if you have to loop the video a few times it only helps the creator. That's what I figure anyway!
Are you sure those are not unique views? Ads used to be unique views per 24h, and it makes sense. You want creators to keep people engaged on the platform, but if users don't swipe they are not gonna serve any ads, so I doubt they would try to intentionally incentivate videos that needs to be looped.
I don't understand doing a pasta bake and then cooking it all the way covered. To start, sure, to let it cook through properly, but what is the point over a pot if you aren't crisping the noodles and reducing the sauce and browning the top?
I think what you're missing about the first recipe is how simple it is. One bowl to mix everything, comes together in a couple minutes. You seemed disappointed it didn't taste like a fancy french dessert but for the effort it I think it looks great.
1996ers can join us 1965ers and the 1979ers in the "generations are a marketing scam" corner.
OMG, my little Icelandic hart is really happy to see that you (David) are using Icelandic products. The other day you used smjör (icelandic for butter) and now skyr (really thick yougurt). Cheers, love your videos. :DD
"I do think it's cool how such a liquid mixture can set this solid that fast"
But not so cool when it happens to your ramen, is it David?
TRY MAKING TAMALES!!!
As a Latina that wold be funny to watch , tamales are really tedious to make.
Lmaoo funny thing I use plain Greek yogurt as a sour cream substitute cause the taste is so similar but it’s healthier 🤣
Best friday ever. New video people! ILY David ❤
David, the segments in the video are reversed, the Ramen segment is marked as "Mango shrimp tacos" and the Mango shrimp tacos segment is marked as "Spicy Ramen"
thank you!!
Love the "good" recipes! You give good insights, are honest about your opinion and have skills to see the recipes to the end. Thank you for the great content!
I would like to hear your thoughts on Mandy Lee's Sultry Tom Yum Pizza Margherita over on Food52. Not just when it comes to flavor, but also in regards to the baking as the recipe tries to get that charred crust you discussed in the NY Style Pizza video with a skillet.
You can literally cook that chicken pasta in 1 pan on the stove.
Dude, your channel is great. I like your channel and graphics just fine. That custard tart is cool! If I was going to make the pasta dish, I'd crisp the bacon, saute the peppers in the drippings (wiped pan, drizzle of evoo or butter), garlic, onions, parsley, basil, oregano, thyme, tarragon, mushrooms, and maybe a little cumin, coriander, and a little fresh ginger, then add the bacon and deglaze the pan with some of the cream milk mixture, toss in a little parmesan, then mix and bake it. 🙂 Have you ever made creamed chipped beef or toast?
You should make a good version of the chicken pasta casserole. I too see the potential, it looks so close to being good.
You should make Korean corn dogs!
Love you David, been a peep since 2018 and i don't regret it
How about Mythical Kitchen’s recent video on PB&J fried chicken sandwich? Apparently it’s pretty tasty
He has a peanut allergy so that's not an option
I haven't heard of that, sounds pretty good to me :D
@@zel358 aw man
As a 1996 kid myself, I totally feel your comment, David. Not quite millenial (too young for some parts) and not a Gen Z either (too old for them). We are this weird, in-between generation I guess
Maybe the last dish could be turned into a chicken bacon ranch pasta kind of thing? That might be fun.
If the pasta only got to a temperature where the red peppers are still raw then that means the temperature of the entire pasta was probably not hot enough to cook off all the bacteria from the raw meat. You should be fine, that recipe isn't a good idea tho lol
Nah, looking at the chicken at the end it was probably SAFE... Palatable is another question entirely though, particularly for the bacon:D
When I cook bell pepper I usually have to get it pretty hot and then cook it for at least another 15 minutes before it stops being crunchy. And that is frying it with a light coat of oil in a 250-300 degree pan... I can guarantee you that just GETTING the bell pepper to 180 F will not result in a soft pepper, whereas chicken/bacon is pretty safe at that temp.
I may be wrong but the whole thing was cooked for 45 minutes and presumably in high heat. Wouldnt that be enough to kill the bacteria? I mean even the chicken looked fully cook
If the chicken got hot enough to cook through then there is no bacteria risk
Agree them tacos look great
Thank you for the honest review of the custard toast! I have an egg allergy and have really felt like I've been missing out. Guess not (:
Love watching ur video to distract myself from being sick 🤢
I agree. Lime crema, that’s what the taco needed. 👍
Your rant about the trending tab had me dying 😂
They makes good videos. They is just so awesome
Was just checking the new banner, and i noticed something. Congrats on the 400th video.
I made a recipe the other night that kind of reminds me of the last video. Except, its made with italian sausage, lots of cheese, and penne pasta. Every component was cooked seperately, then added together and baked. It was really good and had a ton of flavor. But that's how you develop flavors right? Seasoning every component before adding them together? It was called a creamy italian sausage bake or something, but i recommend if you're looking for something different, that can feed a lot of people.
Great episode!
I agree on the shrimp tacos...they were screaming for a (creamy) salsa...
I would love to see a video of improving recipes you've tried. It would be interesting how your tweaks to recipes would turn out like that chicken pasta bake.
2:52 david, you should try turkish yogurt its amazing
Looking at that ramen recipe, I would definitely think of it as a traditional pasta dish and really work and toss the noodles to get that sauce emulsification like you would get with a carbonara.
clicked it immediately after popping into my notif
How funny before you even said it looking at it I felt like it needed a crema! Maybe cilantro lime cream or a spicy sweet crema with tajin and sugar and puréed mango?
David I'd like to see a "quick ramen hack" video I feel like that is something I would actually try doesn't have to be only TikTok 🙃
no the great value white vinegar 😂
Glad to see the David Plate made an appearance today
Bruh you're like a masterchef judge
“The attention span of a squirrel “ lol 😂 so funny but true.
Hey David have u ever thought about doing a video on recipes that need a little tweaking, i.e. the chicken recipe in this video, in ur opinion? I'd love to see u do that!
Thank you for using a real lime. Respect.
The 4th one looks like some late 80s Midwest mom casserole
Solution for the pasta bake: use a metal pan. That way, you can do all your non-pasta pre-cooking on the stovetop directly in it.
An idea for a series would be "Recipe Repair" take those fails and turn them into something good.
i want you to try some chilean recipes, like tradicional pino empanada, it's so tasty that i'm sure you would get it right
Great video, the chapters for the ramen and taco portion have been swapped though.
Did y'all know a Strawberry isn't a berry but a banana is? Mind blowing.
An excellent video with a lot of good sounding and looking foods.
... I'll be honest, after how you talked about the last one, would have loved to see you try to do an upgrade one... oh well though, was still a good watch =D
That pasta is like a (bad) British carbonnara bake
On that last recipe I'd also swap the spaghetti for a short pasta. Maybe penne or something
You must do one of Salt Hank!! 🤩
As long as the chicken is cooked to 165 or 155 with the heat maintained for ten minutes you're good. Pork, as long as it isn't ground, is 145.
pasta dish is something out of a nightmare
Do every ramen recipe you've come across, and rank them🍜🤤
Redo the last one your way ? i would watch it and try it, it does looks promising to me.
Alright, those shrimp tacos looked amazing! Maybe you could have your SO over to offer some opinions on these recipes. He doesn’t even need to be on camera. I’d just like hearing his opinion on some of them.
awe child that hair tho 😩
i would like to see you like try and improve some of this tiktok food like what you could have done to make it better for you and such
Dude, as a '97 in-betweener, I identify with what you said so much.
I somewhat am glad that Tik Tok is getting better presentation than in past:)
WE LOVE YOUUUU
❤
i'm..i'm quite early..and its morning here too
i like the new banner :D
You should do the oven baked grape and pasta recipe
I feel like that chicken pasta bake needs at the very least, some paprika, maybe cumin, maybe some herbs (I can't do spicy and it drives me batty when people behave like capsaicin is the ONLY way to add flavor)
I hate shrimp but the tacos look amazing. I feel like they’d be so damn good with some Cod or chicken in place of the shrimp 👌🏼
A suggestion I'd make for these videos is to either list out ingredients in the description - either in actual order of usage in the recipe or by component (salsa, pickled jalapenos, shrimp). I get that upon first showing the ingredients it is best viewed with the ingredients in "school picture" format with tallest behind, but it goes all over the place after that.
You should do your own tik tok series where you take the original not so great recipient and change them up to amazing with a couple simple changes-like, your ideas for the mushy bacon and chicken pasta - like a “Fixing the tik” kind of series
You should do a versus episode with all the Tik tok ramens.
That last dish could have benefited from frying up the veg a bit with bacon, then the rest the same but with some chili flakes and parm cheese baked in.
I would like to see a video where David demonstrates knife skills in the kitchen
Hello, love your videos. Keep it up.
You should do a 2nd video with the chicken pasta where you improve it
The fact that you don't like Greek yogurt is fine, because Siggi's is actually skyr. :P
I saw that too!
Switch out the Bacon for Pancetta and roast the veggies in the oven for 10-15 minutes before chopping. Then cooked as the video shows. Also when cooking the Meats in liquids, the meats cook to the temp of the liquids boiling temp which is most times higher than 160 degrees. Also, I would use Blns Thighs instead of Breast and season the chicken ahead of putting in the liquid.
You should do the Arby’s Beef & Cheddar versus between Josh Weissman, Guga/SVE, STCG, and Matty Matheson.
1996 baby here too!
You should do a video where you take eh recipes and make them better!
Hello David's dad! Hope your weekend is going well and you're enjoying reading these comments. Those tacos look good; can you verify?
me when david keeps calling skyr greek yogurt 🥲
You should do a carbonara episode using Babish and Vincenzo's Plate
i agree w the superfast tiktok vids...they honestly need an epilepsy warning label
My immediate reaction to the last one was “oh my good it’s so white”
Does context exist for why David has one singular baggie of gushers on his shelf?
'96 baby here too! I think we're part of that awkward generation Zillenials lol
OMG your hair is really blue (green?) now! :)
You should work on a longer-term video where you follow Claire Saffitz’s sourdough recipe and make the bread and some of her discard recipes, too. I think you’re up to it…
I love how you were like "I'm on the cusp I'm not a real millennial" to "the kids these days have no attention span stop the fast cut editing " 🤣🤣🤣
It's just a fact. Tiktok ruins attention span
You can add less pasta water for the ramen and use the egg to actually fry it like fried noodles. Also, secret tip from someone who discovered fried ramen without TikTok: add a bit of mayo on top. Trust me.
You should try comparing a bunch of potato recipes by Poppy O’Toole! She made the 15 hr potatoes trend go crazy!
For the middle, ramen recipe, the problem was the starchy water. It was unnecessary. I drain the water, then mix the egg in the noodles, fry and then add the sauce separately. It avoids that curdy texture. I'd also have made my sauce more sweet than just siracha.
