- Remember the drag racing '74 Chevy Muscle Truck from Roadkill Episode 18? It's back, but with a twist: it's gonna become a true dual-sport ride for surf and turf, shedding its drag slicks for Super Swamper Boggers and hitting the sand dunes...hard! And to prove that a lowered, two-wheel-drive pickup can dominate the dunes, Freiburger and Finnegan set up a shootout with Fred Williams from the Dirt Every Day series on the Motor Trend channel. Fred brought out his '69 VW Baja Bug from DED Episode 23 and went head to head with the Muscle Truck on the beach at Pismo, California.
The Roadkill/HOT ROD Magazine Muscle Truck is a '74 Chevy C10 shortbed, stepside, with a GM LS6 crate engine (like the all-aluminum V8 found in a C6 ZO6 Corvette). It's stock other than a small crane cam, midlength headers, and a new addition for this episode: MSD's Atomic EFI (the truck used to run a carburetor). The Atomic setup is atop a BBK intake manifold, and uses a stock LS1 throttle body. That legendary exhaust sound comes
from 3-inch pipe with 4-inch Dynomax Bullet race mufflers.
The truck's transmission is a JW Turbo 400 backed by a Gear Vendors over/underdrive unit. And it really needs overdrive because the Ford 9-inch rear carries 5.13 gears and a spool. The suspension features dropped spindles and Ridetech Strong Arms and air bags up front. In the rear, two leaves were removed from the stock spring packs, they were flipped under the axle, and traction is delivered by Caltrac's bars.

it's a sad lesson in life. when i moved out of my parents' house the first time, i made a list of car shows from car magazines (before the internet) i wanted to check out someday when i had the money and the time. I watched many change or just disappear. now i try to hit every one of them while i'm still able to drive in the dark.

Cutting the front guards was pretty funny but the pain on Freiburgers face was just heartbreaking to see!

I'm currently trying to replace the ignition switch since the starter won't crank and I've replaced the fusible links, and the starter is good, and swapped the battery, but I have lights on the dash so I feel like when I get done replacing it it'll be for nothing and there is something else I'm overlooking...
No Finnegan those are not the right tires for the sand dunes you guys needed paddle tires for the rear you can generally get them at off-road suppliers

Re-watching it after maturing for 9 years gives me completely different feeling. When it was first released i watched this hackjob and laughed, now watching it again makes me feel the pain that Freiburger had. Kind of difference like watching simpsons as a kid or as a grown up - when i watched simpsons at age of 10 Homer seemed like a hopeless beer-drinking loser. But watching it now makes Homer look like a winner - has 2 cars, a hot wife, big house and a well-paying job. And somewhat freedom to do whatever he wants.

This makes sense as long as you dont know anything about offroading
The Baja Bugs have the engine, all the weight on the rear tires, keeping the front light your hoping to “float” over sand and mud.

freiburger was whining about it. just thought it would have been easier to get some really crappy ones to cut up to keep him from crying. the whole thing is a wreck aside from its powertrain

next time on RoadKill: they swap the bugs engine into a small block V8, put some slicks on and take it drag racing :-)
Then they'll take a sportsman class dragster 'round the twistys to see if it can outhandle a car that was meant to do that.
if you're going to switch to front engine, (which I'm sure you will have to do for any sort of v8, right?) you might as well just go blown big block.

It would be damn sight easier to bolt a v8 to the back of that bug than it would be to convert it to front engine. Hell, its the USA, theres probably already a kit for that..

there are some vw bugs with V8´s in the back and a radiator in the front. if you get the back seats out, you have more space in the beetle´s back than under the hood. And you get much more grip with the heavy engine in the back. That´s why 911´s are that good accelerating.

My grandpa has a 86' C10 and it's amazing. I love it. Looks just like the one in the video but it's matt black.. it use to be a purple and red type color before it's unfortunate accident with a 20 ton, 1953 military tractor

Those watermarks sneak up on you, I've almost been got by "free trials" before. It's not a free trial if all videos are watermarked - because that's not a temporary trial of the real system. That's a modified version. Stop calling it a free trial if you watermark the videos that are produced with it!

Jacob Berman I looked into the website and they specialize in transition and transition audio effects. So I think it's for the sweeping cuts inbetween scenes. But it could also be for color correction - their program has a section for color correction and stabilization.

im sorry, but this is one of the worst episodes you've ever done. Wish I would not have to say this, because Im a real big fan of RK, but this episode was not so good.
I have changed my opinion by now. The more I watch the episode, the more I like it. Still the muscle truck is better in street trim.

To be honest, this episode wasn't worth the wait. First the disaster you call episode 27 and now this? Why would you do that to the muscle truck? Let alone trade it for a VW? I know you said in the end, we will find out if you actually traded it but still. What you should have done was find a junkyard car or truck, fix it up and convert it to an off road vehicle and then go meet up with Dirt Every Day to find out which was best, his vehicle or yours. A lot of people were willing to pay good money for that truck...If you weren't going to sell it, don't turn around and butcher the poor truck. Sigh...ever since Finnegan lost his goatee and went full beard, the show has gone down in my opinion. Hasn't been a memorable episode since the Charger episode (in my opinion).

I think it'd be faster if they used those A/T's on the front so the front just floats and the rear bites for traction. Dune buggies use paddle tires in the rear and skinnies up front, 2WD quads don't use aggressive front tires either. It works, I just think it'd work even better with less knobby front tires.
I'd like to see an offroad race between the Muscle Truck and the Vette Kart.
