    There is a small lock on the side of knob, push in with a small screw driver and the knobs will pull off without the sawing no sawing needed.

    I live in the UK, and I have never come across door handles with brass covering. The ones I get are all solid brass or solid stainless. The cheaper handles are solid aluminium. I normally just come across solid brass . I see many of the types you have in the American scrapping videos.

    For getting that “c clip” off you can use a key pin gauge. You should look into getting a “rekey kit” and a set of picks/hooks. You can actually take apart the lock mechanisms almost entirely without having to cut any steel. I don’t know if you still scrap door hardware but once you have a good understanding of the forces at play you can take these things apart in about a minute and a half

    I think what you calling cast aluminum is more accurately called die cast. Recently I got .45/lb. where as aluminum was going for .60/lb. it was my first time to collect that category. I think it has some Al in it, maybe Mg as well. Inexpensive fan motor housings, etc. The best chucks of Brass are in the latch button..sometimes. When you scrap 6 of the same thing at once, one gets more and more efficient. That was my experience with 6 or so handles a while back. Next time I get some, I will have forgotten the details...

      Scrapping door knobs?

  • @al9929

    I recently got all the door hardware from a change out done in a 200+ unit apt bldg.
    I did the easy clean up for brass and took it in. The knobs similar to in this vid I kept pending scrap lessons like this video - thank you!
    The stuff that had least brass I took in. They paid me for brass bearing at close to same rate as zinc diecast.

    Just a suggestion wouldn't it be easier to cut the knob in half instead of trying to pull the metal out of the middle? Another suggestion is if you can keep them pins undamaged you can probably find a locksmith to give you a little more then scrap prices for them, another good suggestion is weigh the product before tearing it down get your weight and price price you would get for it then after break down get weight and price of each item

    • @scrapitall200
      @scrapitall200  Рік тому +1

      I could cut it in half, the reason I don’t is it uses up more of the cutoff wheel which costs money (albeit not that much of a difference) and also I’ll lose more weight from cutting it and turning it into dust (again, not that much loss, but still loss) I guess it comes down to personal preference. Thank you for the suggestion, I do appreciate the feedback.
      I never thought about saving the pins aka tumblers to sell to a locksmith. I’ll look into that, thank you!
      I might start doing the price comparisons, my only thought is there’s a big difference in scrap prices depending on where other people live. Great suggestion and I absolutely appreciate it. Thank you for taking the time to leave your comment.

      @@scrapitall200 some can calculate about what they would earn at their scrap yard, I myself like watching it in a video a rough estimate on about what you will make as is to what you can make separating it, on the cutting in half with grinder is just a suggestion especially when you got bulk

      As far as cutting the door knobs that way, I’m going to give it a try and I will let you know what I find out. Might even do a newer video and if I do I will make sure to credit you with the idea. Thanks again bud.

    Most doorknobs are only brass coloured chrome unless you score the expensive models from posh homes. With these the only brass is in the keylock itself. A lot of fiddly work for what you're getting. I prefer electrical brass from old porcelain fuse holders- only have to unscrew them!
