I like that they didn't take the usual TV route of a cute, trite and traditional Thanksgiving and instead the show delved into exploring the tainted history of the holiday, even as far back as 2000.
What I always loved about Buffy is that they knew when not to take things too seriously and when to make jokes without undermining the peril aspect. Pangs was always one of my favourite episodes of the season along with "A New Man" (ep 12).
I think non Buffy fans would be surprised at how hilarious the show can be. I laugh my butt off even though I’ve seen every episode dozens of times. Kudos to the writers.
I also Love Spike's knowing smile at the end of this episode. There was no surprise in his face. He also knew that Angel was there the whole time. Probably could smell him.
One of the things I like the most about this episode, beyond just how funny it is, is how each character gives voice to many of the common perspectives on this. Willow feels the anger at knowing what was done to these people but not knowing how to actually do anything about it, Buffy feels the detached guilt of someone that recognizes it was awful but doesn't generally think about such events and only really thinks of Thanksgiving as a holiday shes shared with family, Giles gives the empathetic but pragmatic viewpoint of someone seeing it as just another unfortunate chapter of long gone history and Spike gives the all-logic-no-empathy just-the-facts assessment of what happened and doesn't see any point in the discussion at all.
Recently watched a Comicon Panel UA-cam where James indicated this was one of his favorite lines. I won't spoil the other one he mentioned, but it was five words long (for those in the know).
Both the characters and the writers of the show seemed to fail to realize that they could have reached out to Chumash tribe if they really wanted to give a voice to the native people. Gotta love the humor of this episode.
Regarding the previous episode being a turning point of the season, Buffy has an ongoing thing (albeit debatable) about episode 7 of each season as a pivot for the particular season. Season 1 had Angel (obvious reasons), season 2 had Lie to Me (the importance of choice which is the driving force of the season), season 3 had Revelations (beginning of Faith turning against Buffy) and season 4 has Initiative (obvious reasons). The trend continues through all 7 seasons of Buffy
The original version. The broadcast/DVD version, it is very clear that Riley didn't/wasn't able to recognize Buffy. The remaster butchered the show in horrific ways. It was clear in the original that the hallway was both very dark and filled with smoke. on top of the poor visibility, the commandos were half blind from the flare gun.
Buffy has this pattern from season 3 onwards. The first six episodes wrap up and close out the season prior. Episode seven is the trigger for what the rest of the season is about.
It's not just people: as the Initiative soldiers have remarked, the chip doesn't allow Spike to harm ANY living thing. Meaning he can't even live off of rats the way Angel did until Whistler found him. So he is seriously desperate by the time he comes to Giles and Buffy.
It kinda makes you wonder how Angel was able to work the system. We've seen him pay for blood, but where does he get his money (prior to Angel investigations)? Meanwhile, Spike is always trying to get money. Let's not forget Angel kinda lives a luxurious lifestyle. Ig looked like he was paying rent back in season 2 he also appeared to have sculptures, silk sheets. Now he has a convertible car the ability to afford nancy boy hair gel (Spike by comparison barely gets by with a tv). Future Angel episodes aside, I kinda think he must have acquired a small fortune at some point and not necessarily in the way the show Angel suggests.

As you watch both Angel and Buffy, you will notice that Angel is different in his series, than he is in Buffy, and Buffy is different when she appears in Angel, than when she is in her series. This is deliberate, and not a function of the 2 shows having different writers. Historical stuff, from the Wikipedia article on the Chumash people: "Some scholars[49] have suggested the Chumash population may have declined substantially during a "protohistoric" period (1542-1769), when intermittent contacts with the crews of Spanish ships, including those of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo's expedition, who wintered in the Santa Barbara Channel in AD 1542-43, brought disease and death. The Chumash appear to have been thriving in the late 18th-century, when Spaniards first began actively colonizing the California coast. Whether the deaths began earlier with the contacts with ships' crews or later with the construction of several Spanish missions at Ventura, Santa Barbara, Lompoc, Santa Ynez, and San Luis Obispo, the Chumash were eventually devastated by the California Genocide carried out when the United States took over the territory. By 1900, their numbers had declined to just 200, while current estimates of Chumash people today range from 2,000[1] to 5,000.[2]"
Spike : “Oh, someone put a stake in me...I just can't take all this mamby-pamby boo-hooing about the bloody Indians...You won. All right? You came in and you killed them and you took their land. That's what conquering nations do. It's what Caesar did, and he's not going around saying, "I came, I conquered, I felt really bad about it." The history of the world isn't people making friends. You had better weapons, and you massacred them. End of story.”😂😂😂 This always makes me laugh.
Pangs the name of the episode refers to the feeling of yearning, wanting or desire for something that you really want but haven't got. Overall I think it's not a great episode but two stand out moments when they are all on the bIcycles WITH the music it's obviously a homage to E.T., best part is the dinner scene at the end when Xander says just like old times with Angel being here, it's so important to watch each show in correct watch order. The look on Buffy's face is priceless, and we can guess what this is going to lead to, we just know Buffy wont let this go leading on to an absolutely heart breaking episode of Angel.
Funny episode, but I'm convinced that the PTB only sent the vision to Doyle because they were trying to boost Angel's ratings. (And yes, I did just equate the network with the Powers That Be). Buffy could have easily handled this without him being there.
Oh, cass, prepare yourself for the next Angel episode. It's one for the books in the Buffyverse. I Hope you bring your insight about it in the next Buffy video. Anyways, love your reacts. ❤
Another entertaining reaction. Thank you. It takes awhile but you have mastered the pacing of the show and understanding how characters are and will react in certain situations. Don’t get too confident because just when you think you know, Joss and the gang flip the switch and it all gets turned upside down. Fun episode but without any spoilers, there are no more throwaway or inconsequential episodes left in the series. Incidents, moments, and happenings take place that have or will have consequences. Just enjoy the ride. You have developed into one of my favorite reactors . I know people think all it takes is sitting down, watching, and babbling about the obvious. Your hard work shows itself in how entertaining and professional you make each reaction. Keep up the great job and looking forward to your reactions to the next 3 Angel and Buffy episodes.
Yes you are so right about Angel on Angel! I was pretty meh about Angel on Buffy because he is sort of just bland and moody; on Angel though they do a great job of making his personality engaging and fun to watch.
They ended it like that cuz it was damn funny xD Also just noticed - despite having seen this episode many times - there's an arrow in the pilgrim doll! I MISSED ANGEL. I am tired of being realistic: Buffy and Angel give me the feels! No apology. I would've been so hyped to watch Angel if Oz had gone to join them... Anyway, this is the second time Buffy has made up the meaning of a holiday. First Halloween was "come-as-you-aren't day" and now Thanksgiving is "everybody has a place to go"?
Love your reactions. Thank you, and you are getting into a pretty interesting season arc shortly, but I will not spoil it, simply respond after you react.
Remember the first couple episodes? Giles said Buffy should be able to hone her senses and sense the presence of vampires. I think that’s what is going on here with Angel. Just Angel, though.
5:39 What do you mean I'm like one of those? Now, Willow I forbid you to spend any more time with that Bunny Summers or that Cass lady. I warned you about them. So, now all I can do is let you go with love. I said, Get your coat. Witch. ~ Mrs. Rosenberg
This episode is problematic, but I love it. My family and I used to quote it all the time. The fact that it is the set up to what is universally acknowledged as the best episode of Angel, doesn't hurt. I hope you at least talk about your thought's on Angel's "I Will Remember You" before your next Buffy react, since Angel is a Patreon exclusive for you.
Regarding Xander no longer being a bartender...there was also a slight problem with, you know, a major fire burning up the place? Just saying even if not totally destroyed it is going to be closed indefinitely for repairs.
About Indian vs Native American, it's actually starting to reverse because they never stopped calling themselves Indians. Actual indigenous groups prefer Indian, American Indian, or Indigenous while Native American is falling out of favor with them.
The next episode of Angel after Buffy's Pangs is both my most favorite and my least favorite episode in the Buffyverse. (Doesn't mean you do but I always need tissues)
I wanted to make sure you saw Seth was no longer in the cast before saying this. Seth really didn't like the direction they were going with Oz and asked to be released from his contract. As I also hated the Veruca plot line, I don't black him. I cannot say if we will or will MIT see him again. I wish I could afford Patreon right now. I worked on Angel S1&2. I have a few bits and pieces of info.
@@migmit Austin Powers 2 came out before the season started and AP3 was in 2002. The only other work released around that time was voice work, which is easy to squeeze into a schedule.
From my Google searching it looks like he wanted to leave temporarily to film a movie (not AP) and he said he felt like his character wasn't getting the attention/direction he and Joss talked about. Which is true, that Oz was very underutilized. Nothing I read said he disagreed with the newer direction of his character.
Generally I think Season 4 is the worst season, but I do love this episode. It’s the start of Spike sort of joining the gang on a part-time, unofficial basis and the whole episode is just so hilarious (again, Spike is a standout). Just great!
Many of us feel the same about Angel, i think that his relationship with buffy was creepy and toxic and he didn't have the chance to shine by his own in Buffy. In Angel he's an amazing character, the show made me love him
@@TheRealGSmith I'm not sure if creepy is the word, but i think the relationship was very questionable, he was hundreds of years and she was only 16 when they started
There are some great character moments but this is my least liked episode. To much contrived controversy. I think Buffy is sensing a vampire, not specifically Angel, which is why she is befuddled.
I love almost every episode of this season, including bad beer and pawn, even they both are the weakest episodes of this season beside Jonathan Superstar, Goodbye Iowa & Where the wild things are
I was not a fan of this episode at all the first time I saw it, but during rewatches, it ended up growing on me to becoming one of my favorite episodes (which says a lot, since I wasn't a fan of season 4 in general.) Spike's monologue alone is priceless. Angel may have been the guest star, but Spike stole this episode.
Personally I think the ethical question in this episode is pretty pointless. Yes, we can understand the spirit's motives for doing what it's doing. But we can also understand the motives for why vampires do what they do: they have no souls and they're literally predators. One could easily make the ethical case that they can't be held responsible for what they do any more than a lion can be held responsible for hunting zebra. But nobody does, everybody just accepts that vampires kill innocent people so Buffy should kill them without stopping to question the ethics of it. The same is true of the spirit in this episode. If he had come back 20 years after his people were massacred and directly targeted those who were actually responsible for it: great, let him do it, those people deserve it. But coming back hundreds of years later to target people who's ancestors almost certainly aren't even FROM this part of the country is no more ethically gray than what vampires do. He's targeting innocent people who have done nothing wrong, it is morally right to destroy him to stop that from happening, full stop. There's no ethical dilemma.

14:00 It's more complicated than that many native american organisaitons use the term indians.
I second everything WilliamBowman... (wait were you born in 1660?) said!
(No, but srsly, are you 464 yrs old? 😮😮😮)
My favorite episode in the Buffyverse
Spike saves this episode for me :D
Yes you are so right about Angel on Angel! I was pretty meh about Angel on Buffy because he is sort of just bland and moody; on Angel though they do a great job of making his personality engaging and fun to watch.
Great season so far More spike Buffy has met Riley But we lost Oz Still miss Angel though
Look at Willow. Remember her position on "vague disclaimers." Here she is beating a monster to death with a shovel.
Xander usually gets a lot of criticism for mentioning Angel, but at no point do we see him get the "Don't tell Buffy" message from anyone.
There was another Angel episode immediately after this, where Buffy travels to LA and appears on that show.
I so love Anya.
Remember the first couple episodes? Giles said Buffy should be able to hone her senses and sense the presence of vampires. I think that’s what is going on here with Angel. Just Angel, though.
The reason it's especially working with Angel, in my opinion, is that Buffy has been exposed to him far more than any other vampire. Just a guess.
5:39 What do you mean I'm like one of those?
Now, Willow I forbid you to spend any more time with that Bunny Summers or that Cass lady.
I warned you about them. So, now all I can do is let you go with love.
I said, Get your coat. Witch.

The spaniards didn't massacre native. The english did. That's why hispanic world is a mix of races.
The fire destroyed a coffee house, not the pub. Totally different place.
@@bad71able oops! My bad...
He didnt left voluntarily. He ask for a break to make other projects, but JW said no and wrote him out of the show. SG had liked to continue
@@CoasterTrax I read the story that Seth wanted out.
@@johncampbell756Yeah, because of Austin Powers, I think?
In Angel he's an amazing character, the show made me love him
I disagree with creepy, not sure about toxic, but he's definitely much better developed on his own show.
I love almost every episode of this season, including bad beer and pawn, even they both are the weakest episodes of this season beside Jonathan Superstar, Goodbye Iowa & Where the wild things are
@@CoasterTrax I like watching people react to Superstar
She was definitely sensing Angel. Bangel cannot be undermined 😂😂
Pangs
I was not a fan of this episode at all the first time I saw it, but during rewatches, it ended up growing on me to becoming one of my favorite episodes (which says a lot, since I wasn't a fan of season 4 in general.) Spike's monologue alone is priceless. Angel may have been the guest star, but Spike stole this episode.
Season 4 is kinda like that though, right? I don't like it as a season, but is has some absolute banger episodes and moments.
WOOO
I wish the edits were better cause I was looking for specific moments but they were all skipped over. 😢
Is angel going to come to UA-cam??
It is not! ‘Twas addressed at the beginning of the season, not enough time in the day, so it’s only thrown on Patreon as some raw, uncut footage (instead of not filmed at all like she initially planned)
@@coreyissusdoes she do watch your own copy follow along style, or does she have the video embedded in her Pattern videos?
@@zenithquasar9623 full video is embedded, though partially cropped (zoomed in) so not just showing the full raw video, but yes we can see what she’s watching in those Patreon reactions!
I... think those were perfectly normal sized bikes. What's so funny about them? I mean, yeah, rescue team is itself kinda underwhelming, but bikes?
Your constant pauses used to annoy me a little, but I got over it because you always had something interesting to say.
If I recall, there was another reactor that I watched who did much the same thing.
please review we can't be friends music video
Acts 3 and 4 are almost 100% Joss rewrite
Why did they end it like that? Those of us who have watched the entire Buffyverse know why.
I guess you're ahed on Patreon so I don't think it's a spoiler to ask you this...can you please *at least* put the crossover"Angel"episodes on UA-cam?!?I *really* wanna see _some_ of them, including 1x03 and 1x08!!!!🙏🧡💛🖤

Unfortunately not enough time in the day so Angel won’t be coming to UA-cam, but as you know it’s on Patreon if you’re ever able to hop on there and see the uncut footage (:
I hate him too, but I like how he is played.
@@coreyissus Not enough money to go on Patreon, that's why I wish I could see at least the crossover episodes on UA-cam. Because I consider them as"Buffy"episodes!!

@@coreyissus I _don't want_ to binge this type of videos,I'm already going crazy because I'm late to comment another reactor because almost anytime I try UA-cam deletes my comments and I don't know why. But thank you for what you said about my comments...I appreciated _that_ part very much.🤗💕
One of the Best/Funniest episodes of the series. Not season, the series. And if my memory is any good, watch the next episode of Angel. S1E8. Great Post, Cass. Remember. Buffy = S4E1 Angel S1E1. In that order, all the way thru the series. No matter WHAT anyone says. (said from experience)
As a foreigner, calling them native Americans comes of very arrogant. They weren't "Americans" when they were slaughtered.
True but America is the name of the land, and they are native to it, so it’s likely just the most accurate term for them. The most appropriate term would be their actual tribal name, but native american isn’t insulting (I am part native)
Girl, I wouldn´t forgive you if you were not to post next Angel ep on youtube. Wouldn´t? Couldn´t 😪
Guess there will be no forgiving haha, Angel isn’t coming to YT, but the reactions through Angel 108 are up on Patreon, 109 coming soon (:
