    Alternators run the electrical system of your car, charges the battery and also provide the high voltage arc for the spark plugs. You can run a started car without a battery and run a started car without an alternator until the battery dies. You cannot run a started gasoline engine with both the battery and alternator missing. Diesel Engines do not use spark plugs and once started will run without either via the combustion stroke but no headlamps etc. Alternators loaded can draw up to 5 HP.

    Dan, thank you for this walk-through on car alternators. It really helps understand why car alternators aren't viable as wind power alt's. I very much appreciate that you show it, rather than just saying that it wouldn't work. You know the saying, seeing is believing ;-)
    Awesome show, you are just awesome :)

    Good video and well done I love when people take the time to explain things and Y tube is a God sent in some ways and people like you help teach or open doors for those to come or leave sparks that give rise to ideas that advance science or make life easier.
    The Car Alternator was a huge advancement over the old Generator of the past the field current will increase or decrease depending on the load placed on it from just starting the car to driving at night in the winter with rain beating down and requiring the alternator to produce a large amount of current to power the car's systems.
    The headlights, wiper motor, heater motor, fuel pumps or pump and computer along with the transmissions can eat up lots of power and it's possible to have a weak alternator and have 13 volts output but only have 1/2 current left over. In one tip of aircraft if the main alternator fails the pilot could bring the stand by the alternator online to power the aircraft system;s
    The pilot had to look at the voltage or current meter and turn off none critical systems until he drop the current below a safety lever or the stand by alternator would fail and the aircraft battery would discharge as well.
    Some alternators use external voltage regulators which can be an advantage at times. if the alternator fails its ease to jump power and put the alternator into whats call full field and if it comes back online all you replace is the voltage reg. if not then you replace the alternator. in aircraft, the engine is started and then the pilot turns power on to the field coils. this will allow the pilot to cut power to the alternator should it start to overcharge or if the alternator fails it allows the pilot to remove power from it and saves the current for other things
    In working with magnets and differences sizes of wire it is possible to have an alternator custion wired for Exp in which a higher voltage can be produced as well
    If one looks at Smokey Yunic hot vapor engine its ease to see he cut across or add a new page when it came to heating fuel & the air charge before it enters the engine.
    In 1930 the book call heat power was produced by McGraw -Hill books and in the fuels for the inter-combustion engine water gas is listed it is close to some of the HHO systems but produces a gas
    = H20+C=H2+CO
    I look at the work Stan Miyers- ? Spelling work in HHO GAS
    And leave you with a question to ponder is it possible to make a Sold state Alternator using magnets
    and coils of wire and produce power -[ I use the term Sold State] -meaning there are no moving parts
    Thanks for the video
    and I hope this sparks an idea for at one time the aircraft was only a fool dream at best and the current that used all over the world was look on as a fool ideal as well. and his name like so many in the past is not known to all N- Tesla

    Dan , nice job of making a point of the difference between standard alternators. I noticed you did not mention the bearings, I was under the impression that changing out the bearings for noise-less, was a better option because it kept your power cleaner. Is this no longer true or expected in another video? Or am I just plain misinformed?? Any way your-video is outstanding! A tribute to wind power. And most importantly to all those DIY folks out here, we are deeply in your debt, for all your efforts. On behalf of all of us grateful people out here, I thank you from the deepest depths of our gratitude for all you have done and continue to do. You are a person of great intelligent, interest, and deserves our appreciation, thanks again, Dan.

    I find this interesting, as a person who remembers when we had two cars that could be started with a crank, and 6 volt batteries were routine. In fact, as I recall, our Model A Ford didn't even have a battery!

  • @pietervanniekerk4453
    @pietervanniekerk4453 8 років тому

    As a matter of interest ... car & truck alternators are designed to deliver a fixed wattage ( the rotor is designed to saturate, this automatically limiting the output current, the number of winding turns limit the maximum output voltage. The regulator just limits the output voltage to prevent the battery from overcharging.

  • @jaycool5978
    @jaycool5978 5 років тому +5

    I get what your saying. Yes the number of turns determines the voltage whereas the gauge determines the amps. Volts * amps = wattage/power. Anyone who has removed the battery from an running car to test the alternator will tell you if its good the engine won't stall. This is cos some of the generated power is fed to the exciter rather than powering it from the battery.
    Any generator becomes hard to turn as you draw more current from it (required torque becomes greater). OFC there is an max level of output due to the magnetic field and the windings (output windings).
    With wind turbines okay we could convert the low RPM from the prop to high RPM but that would mean even more torque is needed to drive it. So we need a more direct drive to the generator and thus require lower RPM. Magnet generators are great for low RPM applications and can deliver KW's of power. But again the greater the demand the greater the friction.
    But yes it wouldn't be very practical to use an car alternator cos we'll need to draw some of the current to drive the exciter. Plus we'll more likely want more than 14 volts anyway.
    Great tutorial though

    An alternator doesn't really care which way it spins but the cooling fans on most of them are designed for clockwise rotation. Spinning one backwards would impair its ability to pull air through the alternator, which will most likely overheat when under any kind of load. Hope this helps.

    No. Alternators are pre-bridge, three-phase alternating current that will be the same no matter which way it is spinning, it does not matter. The bridge rectifier sees it the same way. Alternators do have a designated fan blade that can, going the opposite direction overheat. For alternative energy vs a combustion engine the fan should not be a worry.

    interestingly enough, you can put small rare earth magnets in the poles of an alternator rotor and get it to self excite. Drill a shallow hole in 3 or 6 of the poles evenly spaced and glue the magnet in with epoxy. The tiny ones from CD reader eyes are plenty. Add a capacitor and the regulator does the rest.

    dan you left out the voltage regulator this is what keeps voltage constant to rotor at any speed but 1000 rpm is min yet output will charge battery on idle a gm s10 or s12 does not require to much hp and if you know how to tear them down as i do you can also make it work by electric drive as i did mine and used a 12 v step down transformer bridge rectiifire and a drop resistor my setup running uses a 1/2 hp 115 vac motor spins my s 12 @1725 rpm reason i did was s12 had blown regulator blown diodes and kits no longer can get so i took 3 conductor wire fed out from stator to pc board made 3 phase rectifire and i get 14.6 vdc no load @ 35 amps this was to go into a larger setup useing marine batterys mosfet switches and 2 inverters but the main part is working perfict

    with the electronically generated field coil, you could switch off the the power completely if you wanted to have the lowest amount of drag. There are one wire alternators in a lot of custom cars. They don't start to generate until after the car is running and the engine is revved once.
    Plus, it's not like those rare earth magnets grow on trees. I'll bet regulating the power is easier with a field coil too.

    Interesting and informative.
    Looks like this video has been out for a hwhile.
    So... I'm an automotive tech, I'm also very curious about free energy, middle, middle, middle, "that's me phasing out long tedious explanation".
    I don't have a firm grasp of electrical application beyond simple circuits.
    I can't tear down everything explained in the video.
    But, here's the thing.
    I happen to have an MGU. Motor generator unit.
    It's effectively an alternator that doubles as a motor when needed.
    I don't wish to give too much away, or look too incompetent, but, if it were possible to have this MGU supply power, how would I go about testing.
    The normal battery voltage is not supplied to the alternator. It has no rectifier, or even B+ connection.
    It's a pretty steep idea that applications for this involves engine's that don't need a starter.
    The MGU provides the rotation to get the engine going.
    I would be interested in your thoughts to how an MGU works.

    Agree to some degree. Better to use subsidized corn destruction for fuel than nothing. Also it is a process. I disagree with the drill drill mentality. We could drill everywhere and in 10 years lower gas prices by 10¢ a gallon. Make a few billionaires better off. I know a lot of people hate e85 but it is a start towards funding cellulose usage.

    This is full of great information. I was wondering would you get an even stronger current if you were to replace the inner column with magnets but keep the original brush current system as well to boost the magnetism even more? Or do you think the magnets would become to strong at that point and not allow the center axel to spin at all? Or is that just a completely unnecessary/useless fabrication step?

    good vid dude but in the alternator the regulator is going to th brush and 6- 12 volts go into coi this creates a strong magnetic flux when the alternator starts turning and power is output the secondary is used to run the rotor and self sustains when the rpm is raised it will out more by the way you need at least 5 hp to make it wotk rite and it dose creat drag just hook 1 up when energized n try to turn it u cant spin it i got a delco i mod and it works great u can also get more volts n amps

    @HellenKillerProject 5 років тому

    You do know that alternators in buses and other vehicles do have permanent magnet alternators just as a standard car alternator they have regulators that hold the voltage down so they do not burn out the batteries or other components. They will also get very hot and service life will be short. You can put a permanent magnet in a standard automotive alternator and it will perform just the same as with a standard winding. The difference is it takes power to excite the coils to make the magnetic field and that is a parasitic drain, drastically reducing the efficiency of the alternator. Both use a magnetic field and accomplish the same task. The permanent magnet doesn't use resources to operate so it requires less rpm and torque to drive it. Output is not based on RPM it is based on the load and regulator.

    I would like to see if the field could be used as an over speed control. As RPM increases the increased alternator output could be fed back to the field, increasing drag and slowing the RPM of the system. This would also allow generation at lower wind speeds by limiting field strength. It might be as simple as using a pot as a voltage divider to the field. I have never had a reason to check the field current on an alternator but it shouldn't be too high. You could not use the regular to the batteries as this would allow higher RPM's if battery voltage was low.

    @GREENPOWERSCIENCE It's funny you say that, because I remember when I was in school, 25+ years ago, we were riding buses in Denmark, that were in experimental tests, where they'd engage a huge magnetizing on some alternators when braking, so rather than using traditional brakes, they added resistances through magnetic fields, and charged up batteries, that would in turn be used to help the bus accelerate with assisting electro-motors to reduce the fuel use. I am sure that by now, it's standard.

    If alternator can generate so much current to burn out a battery. Can it be used to generate HHO to help reduce fuel consumption.

    @muddymuddymuddmann I see, thanks man. What do you guys think about this: Windturbine to battery pack to (good low torque) electric motor, turning modern gas generator (with gas engine replaced by elec motor). Wud this work with enough wind turbines? How efficient would this be? My goal is to design and construct a fully self-sufficient kind of safe/survival room-- I have not determined the final wattage consumption for everything yet, but it will obviously have to be consistent. any ideas?

    Run a pulley / belt system on your turbine, use a bigger turbine, and get your RPM. Plus the voltage output is rectified on the alternator.

    @chetopuffs does not matter what dan compresses with, it has no effect on your download side of things, youtube treats them all the same once their uploaded.... try changing the quality level to say 360p from 460/720 etc.
