The Poker Deck of the Drowning World Review 4K

  • In this episode we are reviewing a deck that reminds me of of the film Midsommar from director Ari Aster in more than one way. As you’ll see they share a green pastural setting and nature oriented paganistic overtones that permeate the artwork in much the same way the film dors but also because it promises and sheds light on a horror that is all to clear and present. I promise you, much like Midsommar, this deck is unlike what you’ve come to expect. Make sure to stick around all the way to the end of the video for a chance to win a deck of these cards for yourself, from me the Gentleman Wake, and remember for the best in content for curious collectors like, subscribe and ring that notification bell.
The official title of the deck I’m reviewing here is the Fledermaus Workshop presents the Poker deck of the drowning world, a panoramic parable told in 52 scenes. The deck comes packaged in a beautifully illustrated tuck case. The front iterates the deck name in a poster-card style layout. Behind the floating placard bearing the title. the image shown is a verdant and winding stretch of green grass lands punctuated with still blue lakes. In the clear skies above a row of distant clouds a flock of white birds swirls. This is a deck that wears it’s artwork on its sleeve, figuratively and literally, as the sides, top and bottom eschew traditional text and copy in favor of small sequential images of the 52 scene parable promised by the deck’s title.
The back of the box is an image of one of the decks kings, the king of birds (we’ll get into that distinction a little later). The king towers over the same landscape as on the front, except the birds swirl around him, perching within him on the sills of windows and trapdoors built into the tall straw-man structure. There’s a totemic quality to the figure that we’ll see echoed on all the kings.

I can really see the Midsommar reference. I love Ari Asters' movies, especially Hereditary.
Due to the bright backgrounds of the deck, it reminds me of the singer and songwriter Novo Amor. His music is quite peaceful and uplifting, his album art consists of pastel colours and earthy tones and the artist himself is almost completely eco friendly (he has more information about how he is eco-friendly on his website)

The deck locks like a tarot like deck to me. I have some decks where all the cards are custom, but didn't have any like this one where the cards tells a story. Also, very creative use of the custom suits.

I think they really remind me of all those nature series, in the way that the deck and such series have the same goal. They want to educate people about preserving what is beautiful on this planet. What I really love about the deck is that it is so direct in telling you that it is mankind that is causing all this.

This deck is powerful and beautiful all around in my opinion. The deck at first reminded me of the movie "Wicker Man" starring Nicholas Cage but as the review progressed the message of the deck reminded me of "An Inconvenient Truth". The theme hits home for me as well and thank you for sharing your message and feelings about climate change. Finally I would love to see more unusual reviews from you. In my eyes, you cant go wrong with a review of any kind.

    Hey TGW,
Great video, really liked the video recommendation in this first half, and I definitely think you got the best deck review channel out there (although I hope you hear that all the time).
It's funny that the first piece of artwork I thought of was Waterworld with Kevin Costner. I suppose it was all the water in the drawings, but I also see the industrialization, regrowth, drowning aspects of the suits in the film as well.

Omar, if you're interested in the collapse of the dystopian world, you should check out The Year of the Flood novel trilogy (Oryx and Crake, The Year of the Flood, and MaddAddam) by Margaret Atwood. You'll know her by her great work The Handmaid's Tale!
In terms of the cards, although you don't prefer the backs, I see the back as the pollution of water resource by an oil spill, once again a very grotesquely vivid depiction of the world we live in now. I love this deck sooo much due to its motif, but I have to say this video has become my favorite video of all time on your channel. Your extremely powerful, cautious, yet elegant narrative style really demonstrated the fullness and richness of this deck, something that I could never reach even as a fellow reviewer. Thanks for this.

Perfect example of long beach California. First started off as beach with trees and sand then became a port for ships then industrial revolution made that area boom with business and then with all of its growth it started to spiral out and now is a perfect example of a destroyed city and now hundred years later we still don't see life taking over but hopefully one day everything goes back to nice city. (Long rant, probably didn't explain it well enough, sorry)

I cannot believe how little effort they put into the back design. The back design is the most important because its on every card, and its what got the least effort here. The poor back design alone is enough to kill the interest in this deck for me, despite the fact that I absolutely LOVE the concept, the art on the faces and just about everything else about the deck. The back is so bad it ruins the whole deck for me, despite how magnificent the other side of the cards are. I also havent the deck being sold by any of the retailers I use, which is something I cant say about any other deck.
