Thankyou for taking the time and effort to keep another autostick alive and kicking. Most people say they are too much hassle. The VW design was way ahead of the competition. Yes they are extra work for parts etc but they are a joy to drive when working correctly.
This viewer thanks the poster of the video, and considers it helpful; but, I cringe, when seeing the rubber boot abused in that manner, which could tear it, and there goes $10; just give the lever a short spray of silicone lube.
Thanks for showing work on the autostick! I just bought one and learning from you! Where do you go to buy your parts for the Autostick? I am having problem finding parts, like this contact switch . Thanks
Hi Joe, select parts are available new from: www.evwparts.com/volkswagen/AutostickTrans.html www.cip1.com. To name a few. Autostick forums and theSamba.com is another great source for used parts and help. Good luck.
Also an insulating washer, must be installed under/around the contact, so as to support the contact, and the spring, and prevent the spring from touching the contact; the insulating washer, and the spring, are not shown by Beetle parts sellers. All these years, folk have been assuming the problem being caused by the contact; the insulating washer, must be present, and a fresh spring must be installed.
Some parts sellers have a new contact, none have the spring; when the contact is replaced, also the spring should be replaced; the design is faulty; but, that is the way VW did it; when performing this task, first clean every thing; the spring is the cause of the trouble, the result being frequent tweaking; but, folk assume the trouble is caused by the contact, since it is an electrical device.
Now i know why my vw went up in fire. i went to the dealer and toll them not to plug in the computer that the wire was grounding out. but the service man did it any way. i got a new gremlin .

Thanks! Got an idea how it works now. Can’t wait to see how you adjust all the electrical and vacuum components to work smoothly.
Thank you, you may have solved all my problems and save me from selling my bug.
It would be great if somewhere on the internet the method of checking the fluid level in the VW autostick was given.

thank you
anyone figure out the special tool for removing and reinstalling the sleeve from the M-15 nut ? I am looking at grinding a 17mm on the sidewalk
What I called an insulating washer, correctly is called an insulating sleeve.
old school... only way forward.... bugger all wiring....
CAN YOU PUT A AUDO STICK TRANS ON ENGINE THAT HAD A STANDARD TRANS
You just need to install the torque converter n plate that holds it to the crank.
Also the nut is different
