That is one of the most generous moves by a company that I've seen in a while.
The term you can never have too many plugins wasn't taken lightly by these subscription based companies I mean sheesh, that's a lot of work getting to know all of those sonically. We are in the plugin buffet era of home studios lol
I don't do plugin rentals. But I also understand those who do like it. SSL is really doing a amazing job handling all the brands they are in charge of now.
Man I just downloaded all my SSL plug-ins and it's hitting me - Christmas came early! I was already a member and fan of Slate and I can't live without it - but now! So grateful!
SSL has been making moves for a while now behind the scenes. I LOVE the merge. I was already doing the SSL Sub. And I was going to cancel after the sales of the fusion plugins. But now, I’m good. I’m all in.
I subscribed to SSL because of the 4K then moved over and added the Slate Plugins. I love it. I've had 14 tracks signed in Sync this year.
Excellent discourse! I recall realizing I had created a problem for myself as I waited for 340 plugin's to load/refresh as I started a Studio One sesh. Went mostly S1 native, kept a few desert island plugins for basic recording of tracks. We use subscriptions to finish projects, like Anteres for vocals, etc. Cheers, enjoy the channel👍
I've been using Slate AAP for about 2 years now and love'em, awesome plugins! When I got the email a couple of weeks ago about this, it just made AAP even better. Love this!
Great, but.. how many EQs, compressors & channel strips are needed?
Awesome vids Barry! So refreshing the honesty you bring! Keep in mind that the sub where you can pause isn't included. I think this upgrade can be gotten with it but you'll lose the ssl plugins if you pause the new account. I was thinking about changing to the 14.99 pkg (I had my 24.99 paused) and this offering kicked it over the top. Slate plugins are awesome and now with SSL and Harrison... just pushed it over the edge for me.
its fantastic, I had both subs and now only one and cheaper - its a no brainer. and all are awesome plugins, super quality.
WOW. That's pretty amazing. Thanks man. Missed this one.
I'm glad you put this out there Barry! I just looked at my email from Slate Digital and they said that the SSL option will be available on the 15th of November. I just went through everything and ended up realizing that everything will be good to go on the on the 15th. Good news indeed! I'm looking forward to this and moving away from Waves. I made it all the way up to a Mercury plan with them and got irked with their Subscription plans. So this combo looks to be more than capable of giving me all the goodness I want with my music! Thanks!
Wow! bout to go check this out, thanks for the heads up man!
The only "rent" I pay for plugins is "to own".🤷🏾♂️
I also noticed with having so many plugins, I'm stifled by the enormous amount of options. I had to start deleting plugins in order to focus better.
I’ve got several videos on all you “need” is a handful. I have more than most due to my channel and staying versed on options. Most of them are provided for free on a temporary bases.
@BarryJohns Yes, I've heard you state this on other videos. I was speaking about me and just owning or having access to too many plugins in general.
Holy crap, what a deal. Already a Slate customer and this is news to me. So excited.
Hello Barry, hope you're well.
I cancelled my subscription and you made me renew it again!! Man that's great, I own some SSL plugins and they are good indeed....thank you for the tip
cheers
I have been a Slate All Access Pass member for a few years now - always worked top notch and never really any issues - SSL add ons are great however latency issues are much more prevalent - especially with the Harrison products so I don't use them. The Fusion EQ and Stereo plugs are amazing for final mixes. I am only a complete amateur and only write, do cover tunes with my rinky dink laptop, Boss BR800 as audio interface, Aston Origin mic, Guitar Rig Pro 5 and several guitars. Most fun one can have with their pants on....lol
I already had the slate subscription, this is amazing, I have so many new plugins to download!
I, like many, am not crazy about renting plugins but I broke down and got on the UAD Spark bandwagon when it first came out and I absolutely love UA plugins. I was snooping around SSL website recently but I decided to not pull the trigger with them because I don't want another subscription and there's just no way I'm giving up my UA. That said, I agree that SSL and Slate are superb. most of my records over the years were mixed with Slate stuff by the engineer who mixed my records. Thanks again for a great video Barry! Your channel is my go to for opinions and such.
But I have a problem to be a renter. I want to be an owner!

Why are people so adverse to subscriptions. Considering that the audio and virtual instruments plug-ins are likely some of the most pirated the subscription and rent to own options make it more accessible to those who cannot afford them.
Ownership has no real benefit, resale value is proof of this. I’d rather have ongoing support and accessible updates via a subscription model that ensures the sustainability of the development than own a plug-in from a defunct company.
Seeing power parity purchase being supported would be a welcome addition for developing countries. Power parity pricing means pricing products based on the average income in different markets, so people in lower income regions can afford the products at a price proportional to their local economies. This helps make products accessible to more people globally.
Word up
So, buy them then!
Slate subscription has always been a great deal. I have not subscribed in a long time but also own some of the plugins as perpetual. I had the same issue with control surfaces as you describe with any plugins like the mix rack. Hopefully midi 2.0 will roll out and mapping will become seamless in the future
Very Informative. Thanks for this. Keep It Moving!!!!!
Just bought the Sub. I'm a Harrison Mixbuss user that gave me the discount and brought me to it so it seems like good value to me 3 different companies plug ins for one price seems like a no brainer.
I have an all access plan but I don't have the SSL plugins available in ILOK...
Ok Barry just received a notification about this video earlier today and the first thing to catch my eye is the Avis Dock and either an S1 or S3 next to it. I saw your recent video about having regained some respect for Avid’s latest changes to their software renewal programs but how big of a change has this been to affect your overall satisfaction? Have the SSL fader packs been sent packing? Not judging here at all just curious as to whether I may have missed anything along the way. Cheers!
Slate got subscription right, and now SSL has made it even better. Wish I’d known this beforehand, because I just bought all the SSL stuff from Waves 😂
What I’d really like to see now is the option to use VMR stuff independently, as well as within VMR.
Hey Barry, they also just dropped today the SSL 4K E today.
I missed this merger completely. This is good info.
Love that purple guitar 😮
Tom Anderson
I pulled the trigger and added the SSL to the Slate plugins. I could not pass up on that all it cost me was the tax of 54.cents
So- i already have the slate subscription. Now how do i get the new plugins since im already paying for them? I know thats probably a dumb question but im confused- yet exciting at the same time and i wanna use those plugins!!!
So I have to login to my slate digital as I have all access. I can't find anything about all access to SSL and logging into it?
Actually, State Digital was acquired by Audiotonix since 2022 and later SSL and Harrison.I glad in a way but it can also be bad if the ever wanted to raise the price.
One thing plugin buyers dont understand - when you buy software, it is always a rental. They just dont tell you the term limit.
How so? care to explain?
@@gabrielmoreno3008 firstly, most (not all) roll out paid updates which would normally be covered in a subscription.
But more importantly, once you upgrade your os, after 7 years for example, you probably will need a paid update to even boot up your plugin
OP is correct and this is explained in the terms that most do not read. When you purchase a plugin, you enter into a contract which is the right to use the software. The software remains the property of the developer.
Hi Barry! I can see your point about it being very compelling. I have already bought several of the SSL and Harrison plug-ins on sale over the past year so in my case it wouldn’t be as compelling as it might be for someone who didn’t already own so many.
I was shocked when I found out this morning that SSL purchased Steven Slate digital loll. SSL got Harrison Mixbus, now they got Slate.
This is absolutely great news!!! And to think I ended my SSL subscription some two weeks ago in favor of Slate.
Wow.. That sub price with content thats smokin' .. Impressive!
SSL having also recently acquired Harrison, you think they aquired it no just for the plugs, but the Daw based on Ardour? Imagine SSL 360 incorporated directly within Mixbuss.. Hmmmmmm
Great info Barry!!! I guess you just saved a lot of people a lot of money today. THX!! BTW, you asked about subscrition models...I take it like carsharing... yes, you could share a car and drive it as long as you like and then give it back...but its just not the same as owning a car. ;-)
Also: I prefer buying few plugins that I really use, instead of renting way too much plugins that I never use.
Been with the Slate subscription from the beginning and it just gets better and better. I think there's plugin overload though now, I already owned some of the SSL ones so I knew them a little beforehand, I also only installed the ones I knew I was going to use.
How do you link the two separate installers to the same account though? I've been an AAP subscriber for years. I also have an SSL account with just a few of their plugins. Do I just sign out of the SSL manager and sign in with my Slate credentials? I haven't received any emails or instructions on how to get the SSL stuff linked to my AAP sub.
Hey Barry, you didn't have to double pay. When I followed the email Slate sent out I was charged a prorated fee of .48 cents for the rest of the month.
Hi Barry, regarding Slate plugins and controllers. I see you have the S1 and Dock now. Can't you use the plugin mapping feature in Pro Tools to change the configuration to fit the knobs on the S1/Dock? Thank you. 😊
Hey Barry I would love to hear your opinion on SSL plugins vs Slate's versions of SSL stuff (FG Dynamics, FG-S, VBC Grey, Virtual channel/buss Brit 4K setting), now that we have both in the same package.
Got it yesterday, I was pleased to see the upgrade. Did not know that SSL had purchased Slate. I guess the bigger guy absorbing the little guy is good old capitalism. The SSL stuff is totally awesome.
Three are the only Harrison’s out right now.
I've been trying to stay away from subscriptions that are not rent to own, but this deal is pretty compelling 😅
Oh man I was so mad today when I went to mix a track and none of my Slate plugin licenses were working, but after getting everything switched over to SSL now I have like 3 times as many plugins for the same price? I am not used to a company actually ADDING value after buying out another. WOW!
How long till they raise the subscription price? 😮
Are the Harrison plugins any good?
Yeah, I don't do subscriptions (for things like this, anyway). Primarily because once you use a subscription product in a project, you are beholden to pay rent forever if you ever want to change/reuse that project again (unless you bounce everything out - but that kind of defeats the purpose of "changes"). IDK, but to hear you talk on this video, I get the impression, perhaps erroneously, that you are being paid by somebody to sell subscriptions. I get it. Companies (and shareholders) LOVE subscriptions, because they make more money that way, and it's way easier for them. But more and more consumers are figuring out the disadvantages of them too (as several companies have just learned, embarrassingly). Anyway, to each his own.
Just before I cancelled my slate subscription 😂😂
How to get them if I’m already on the ilok version with slate all access? I can’t find the SSL licenses on my ilok account.
Me either. I think they hosed a lot of existing customers
@@john7424well… not cool
They said on social media it's coming out 8. November, so two more days I guess
I use subscriptions because it’s the only way I could ever afford to get all those awesome plug ins. I subscribe to SSL, UAD and Izotope and I’m very happy! I’m looking forward to the 15th, it will be like an early Christmas!
i’m still troubleshooting how to get those SSL plugins to show up under my slate all access
Same here, I couldnt even find any information on how to activate a possible license. I didnt even find a license activation code for my All Access Pass that I could've used for the SSL plugins. Please hit me up if you find a way
im in the same boat right now. a little confused over here lol@@doingittodeath
Well... Turns out the subscription isn't valid until nov 8th.
Hi Barry. When did you switch back to protools and are you still using the rme with it? Are you making a video covering this and the additional avid hardware you got?
Holy freaking Cow. Holy freaking Cow is because Gobler gave up? Holy holy freaking Cow....
Informative
Sooo, Mr. Barry, whatcha got on the desk behind you? Is that a new digital mixer with a big knob? If so, what brand is it? Is it primarily for vlogging/podcasting?
If I felt I needed that many plugins, I would be sure I would need to take stock of what it is I think I know. That's a hell of a lot of clutter
Well tbh you just use whatever you like its not as if you have to use them all. Its fun to experiment and see what could work but most of the time you dont use most of the plugins. Looking at plugin alliance they have so many plugins and I only end up using maybe 15 of them max
I will under no circumstance ever use a plugin subscription. But to answer your first question. I clicked on the video because I had no clue anything happened and was curious what them going Nuclear meant.
I’m not interested in adding another subscription to my life, but this is very compelling. I think because everything is more and more subscription based, people just can’t handle the load anymore, and companies will have to have more compelling offers. Seems like this is smart on SSL.
Plus SSL is slated to drop another UC1 mapped console emulation plug-in before the end of the year. 🎉🎉
They aren't amalgamating into a single installer/downloader/updater yet?
Rent to own is better option!!
If it's not rent-to-own, I do not subscribe to these companies. So, Plugin Alliance
NB: if you subscribe to the monthly payment plan, the all access pass locks you into a monthly subscription for a whole year, you cannot cancel at any time like the standard Slate subscription. I have subscribed, but now feel this was a mistake. I now realise that all thee plugins cause plugin overload, thus a hindrance to mixing progress. As a beginner, I now realise that I would of been far better getting to know how to use stock plugins and gradually introduce quality one or two core EQ, compressor, reverb etc and use them. Then I ban can really start to understand how to use these products to shape your sound, rather than spending hours and hours on trying to decide which plugin to use and work out how these plugins work.
They promise it as free, but ask $75,4 + tax. What a scam
Steven slate or slate digital?
I don't seem to have it in my ilok account even though I have the all access pass. Anyone else have this issue?
I had to unsubscribe from Gobbler and then start a new plan under slate digital, all good after that.
i'm watching because the video title doesn't state specifically what you're talking about
You are with Protools again?
So the Slate is an add on to SSL..so..you have to have SSL sub first?
They are all one sub now, they should have rebranded.
Did u go back to ProTools?
Haven’t decided yet
Fabfilter is king imo.
I just migrated from gobbler, paying an annual $149 … I still don’t understand whether slate are going to charge me for the outstanding billing period (6 months) when I already paid for it?
I got the Harrison plug ins but it is saying just as a 2 week demo period
Pleased with the ssl set, and was pleasantly surprised that despite warning that they might not work on my (OS Mojave) system, they seem to work fine (unlike the UA bundle I got with my volt 2 interface earlier in the year)
If you’re running Mojave you should be able to go to Catalina. My iMac is late ‘13 and had to go to Catalina a few months ago. I actually didn’t remember why but I think it was a security thing. and something to do with Waves going to V3. There were some glitches for awhile but they cleared up. Cheers!
@@zarlok5294 Thanks. the main reason I didn’t was originally because of SS plugins, but there’s other third party like Joey Sturgiss that wouldn’t work at the time with OS upgrade so I stuck with Mojave… I want to finish off a couple of projects with my Heath-Robinson system as is and then start from scratch with a new MacBook in the near future
ALCON Just a heads up. Slate will not make this available to us until Nov 15.
How did I get mine then?
Thanks Barry, interestingly, I hear this first from you. I missed the email announcing this; I see it now from 12 days ago.
Your channel continues to be informative, educating and entertaining with cut-to-the-chase no nonsense quality.
Do I see protools on that monitor in the background? 😂❤
I’m currently going back and forth

Audiotonix own SSL and Slate and Harrison….. so SSL isn’t the hungry hippo
SSL does not own Slate Digital. They are both under Audiotonix. SSL owns Harrison.
Right you are. I’d never heard of them till now and looking at their website they have an impressive portfolio. TIL.
I thought Audiotonix bought all these companies.
They did - including Sonible
Ihave all acces but not ssl license tho
so are you back on Pro Tools now?
This doesn't work for the pay monthly subscription though, only pay annually.
Not true, I pay monthly.
@@BarryJohns I tried it, didn't work, and on Facebook, I was told it's only pay annually, so I dunno.
@@BarryJohns same thing here i pay monthly but but no ssl on ilok for me
Might be pay monthly with an annual contract?
I prefer SSL plug-ins and I would rather to have the cheaper subscription of £15 a month then £23 for more plug-ins I don’t need.
I like subcriptions, no idea why so many people cry about it
That's cool for those who subscribe, but yeah, I'm not a renter.
Yeah……I guess bcuz Gobbler went out of business? 🤷🏽♂️ So I just switched over after Gobbler charged me a week ago for the Steven Slate subscription
14 per month is great i also have plugin alliance i am so happy❤❤❤❤❤😂❤❤❤ joy joy
These Audio tonix ppl lol
Don’t make the same mistake as me. Never go for Slate’s All Pass subscription plan. It sucks!! Worst decision I ever made.
Care to elaborate? Because I've ben using it for the last 3 years and I would say it was the BEST decision I made... and now it's even better with the addition of SSL
Subscription Free
Um ... I didnt know the topic and you put us down right from the get go ... not cool.
Oops just cancelling slate ..but now?! Not a fan of VMR either
Gone back to pro tools?
Meh
Your opening doesn’t make any sense for people stumbling onto this video in the algorithm.
Yea, I screwed up and post the video with the beginning accidentally cut short. It had been up too long before I caught so I just left it that way.
@@BarryJohns haha makes sense. I was a bit lost as to what I was being told in the first few seconds.
