Great timing, my order arrived today so armed with these tips I'm going to start play testing layouts tomorrow. Feel a lot more optimistic that I'll get a decent result having watched this video.
Metalworker here - Springs, like the one in your pliers, don't wear out from being compressed. They don't wear out from being opened. They wear out from being repeatedly compressed and uncompressed. You won't wear out your pliers with the handles squeezed together in your display. You will wear them out actually using the pliers, but what good is a tool you don't use?
I have foam inserts for my DeWalt Tough 2 rolling system. I’m currently buying a premium tool set from scratch to go in it, as it’s pretty much Knipex lead it’s expensive and taking me a while to afford to get them all together before I cut my foam. I’m really looking forward to the day when I can start it 😊
You must have heard me on Wednesday experimenting on my first project with Shadowfoam, thank you for the invaluable tips to help those with arthritic hands. Great video Jonathan.
Great set of tips, the pop up of the pad saw is 1 I am going to steal 👍. For my test leads, I use a wooden or steel object to scribe around, so I don't cut into the lead insulation. In my Teng tool chest, they have double layered a lot of tools, the pliers are a good example, where they would lay the side cutters on top of the combo pliers.
Hi there , I’m getting the orange foam for a triple rollar pack to put my photography lenses and gear. Any tips!! ?? Lenses will go downwards on double set I think and now bought the Bosch hole saw set!! Will be ideal for the lense holes. And my lights and flashes. Great set by bosch btw. Next my festool kit. Wanna help?
Great video good tips “ where did you get them screwdriver extensions from and what brand are they “ Can we have a video on the Bosch 12V FC35 to put in l box as I don’t seem to see many videos on Bosch equipment only Dewalt, Ryobi,Milwaukee and skill lets us know please 🙏 thank you
I have watched you videos with great interest and I have bought quite a few bits of shadow foam. I play Airsoft and have used it for my pistols and rifles, whilst the magazines and pistols are not so much of a problem. The rifles really do prove a problem. They are long and irregular shapes and depth. Please can you do a video with some advice. You sell the foam for the nuprol gun cases. I have used it in other cases as well. A video to help the shooting community would really be appreciated Thank you
Hey brilliant helpful video, one question i have though is im using some shadow foam for a shadow box and id like to paint the shadow foam what would be the best way to go about doing that ?
Lots of good tips there. I have 200 router cutters that I want to store in drawers and a systainer for mobile use. What is the best way to cut 200 neat holes in 8mm, 1/4 and 1/2 inch diameters into shadowfoam?
Thanks David! I’d say templating is a good option. If I were to do that I would probably mark out a grid of dots with a silver sharpie and then heat up a 1/4” metal bar and melt the holes. I may have to make a video about cutting circles 👍
Any tips for if the base of your box isn’t flat. I’m looking to do the inside of a BMW Vario top box and so the base is not square and flat. So need to get the foam to fit before worrying about tool layout
Hi Johnathan, quick question. Can I join 2 together (side by side) to make 1.2m in length with perhaps double sided tape or something else, put them in a frame to make a housing for my parallel guides?
Hi mate, I know you've done a halfords one already however was just wondering if you've got any tips for the big toolkit they do (the 200 piece one) as the toolbox is pretty hopeless and feel like you could come up with a better solution including a different toolbox, look forward to hearing your thoughts!
About 20 knives, four or five multitools, pocket screwdrivers, Knipex cobra XS etc and about half a dozen torches. Some AAA, some much bigger. Currently it’s kinda all over the place! All “pocket” sized though overall so should be easy enough to find a box big enough!
Ik it's sounds stupid but how would I cut the sheet down to fit into my toolbox drawer as I want some for the draws in my top box and the smallest sheet you offer is too big lol. Just mask a straight line and go down it with a blade?
Could you add an option on your site for the milwaukee drawers to select if you want 2 or 3 inserts? I cant justify buying 2 twin packs when i will have one insert go to waste.
Hi there, thanks for the video. I have just invested a Makita set and will be using shadowfoam to get them nicely organised. Quick question - I'd like to get some of my other corded power tools in foam too. I have searched through your vids tips on this but didn't spot anything so far. Do you have any advice for corded tools? E.g. where to set the cables/plug. Would you get really thick foam to cut a deep cavity behind the tool or is there some other good method to keep it all looking tidy? Many thanks. Keep up the good work.👍
i'm currently trying to get a halfords 1/2" ratchet set into a packout compact organise / half of a packout organiser but proving to be a tight fit. Anyone attempted this?
Wouod love to put shadow foak into my big costco toolbox but its just too expensive for me i had to resort to get like the foam gym mats and cut them out.
Pls allow one question: Is finding the right layout the hardest thing? I've got now the 30mm/50mm-Set for my Makita-Boxes and I'm goin to be crazy to find the best layout 🤪
You should've shown the tip for hiding the longer items, like screwdrivers, underneath other items so you can only see the handle but you can lift it and slide it out.
Well first feedback/tip from an utter novice. I failed to factor in how a bag reacts when stretched slightly meaning the foam I ordered was slightly too long (better than short!) So needed to cut 30mm off one end and to be honest didn't fancy using a scalpel. So armed with ad much courage ad I could muster I borrowed a large kitchen knife (non serrated) and using a slow sawing motion keeping neat to vertical and using a metal straight edge it produced a perfect cut through 70mm of shadowfoam.
Slow and steady produced a great cut, can’t in good faith agree with the knife but I’m happy you ordered slightly big rather than slightly small! What was your Shadow Foam project?
Agree the large kitchen knife isn't the ideal tool but the result wad very neat Haven't finished the project yet but it will be a duffel style kit bag for holding a crossbow in it's primary component parts.
It’s a once in a while purchase. For me, as I spend a fair bit on tools, housing them in an expensive case is an investment. The coloured Shadow Foam will show up if you’re missing a tool, that could pay for itself in one instance. A 125mm Knipex plier/wrench I have is about the £40 mark, having foam to ensure I don’t leave it anywhere is a bargain. If you have scruffy cheap tools ( nothing wrong with that, some people don’t want to spend money on expensive tools) then I’d agree, no point in buying foam inserts. From what I’ve read, foamed toolboxes came from the aviation industry. It confirmed the presence of all the engineers tools, so nothing was left behind to cause possible damage, which could be catastrophic.
We didn't use foam in the Forces but we had shadow boards which as you describe instantly highlights a tool is in use. Each engineering tech had numbered tags which where put on a pin next to a tool taken to an aircraft. Certainly ensured you knew exactly where the tools where at all times!

Bought my first lot, started with a small drawer, it's exactly as ggood as it looks on your videos, amazing stuff!
I love the “push ‘n’ pop” method. I’m not a big fan of finger pulls so the half cut deep into the recess is a dream for me

My pleasure mate, I hope these tips help! 👍
Thanks to you today i made my first knife collection using foam which is looking nice❤
20:27 If the spring does wear out, you can replace it with a binder clip/ bulldog clip spring. They're cheap at the dollar store.
Thanks for the tip mate I appreciate that!

Love the wee pop up trick because I don’t really like a visual finger pull I’ll definitely be using this 👌
Happy to help mate, let me know how it goes on your project! 👍

Looking forward to this! Love a tips video!!!

Hey brilliant helpful video, one question i have though is im using some shadow foam for a shadow box and id like to paint the shadow foam what would be the best way to go about doing that ?
28:20 - The fingerpulls magically appear after not have been there the second before, and then they disappear again at 28:26 ;)

I use a magnetic tray to put knives/scalpels etc on so they don;t fall on the floor or get moved around

Are there things like solvents that I need to keep away from the foam? Don't want to melt it!
Trying to find the right case to organise my EDC knives, tools etc

Thank you for the video this is great i have just bought my new tool box so will be ordering some soon, any news on purple color ?
Working on purple, hope to have an announcement soon! 👀
Is there an option to have a Smoothing spinner to fit a rotary tool? Those who struggle with dexterity may favour the lighter tool option
Definitely something I can look into 👍
Great tips, if you had something particularly large can you stack shadow foam? Like a bottle jack for example.
Absoluteky! You can stack Shadow Foam as trays or glue it together! 👍
Be great to see a video on various ways to cut in socket sets please!
Definitely something we get asked for a lot, keep your eyes peeled, I’ve got a few ideas 👀
Idea for the foam cutting kit.
Can you make a tool with a sort of U-Shaped blade on the end to easily cut out slots to take out tools from the foam
why not just cut some fingerpulls into the foam so you can take the tool out with your hand?
Ik it's sounds stupid but how would I cut the sheet down to fit into my toolbox drawer as I want some for the draws in my top box and the smallest sheet you offer is too big lol. Just mask a straight line and go down it with a blade?
Is it a box we make inserts for?

Shall pass this on to my web team! 👍
@@ShadowFoam Thanks
Great tips.
Thanks Mark, any stand out to you?
Please, how to make cylindrical holes with Ø 8mm? The knife won't work, I think.
Any suggestion on shadow foam suppliers in the US? Will get a bit pricey to ship it from the UK 🙈

Too expensive? What were you ordering and from where?
You can get packs of 5 online for cheap. Big enough to fit in my snap-on tool box.
That’s good advice👍👍👍👍🙂🙂👌👌
Glad you think so!

I'm ordering this now! where do you suggest purchasing the shadow foam itself?
Why is it you can't buy a milwaukee packout 3 draw foam pack. They only come in packs of 2
NIfty pop up seems a great idea
Definitely, worth a go!
Can I have some of your stickers for my 1:32 scale modelling so I can make a layout of your unit and vans
Hi Tom, that sounds fantastic! Drop my team an email at m.wood@shadowfoam.com and they’ll get that sorted for you!
