In today's video, I look at one of the most commonly criticised components of modern Ferraris - the interior. With the 458, Ferrari introduced a new way of doing things that was a radical departure from not just their cars, but everyone else's.
This layout was in use up until the introduction of the SF90, with it and the later Roma receiving a new style of "human machine interface".

Saving this one for future reference 😉😂
Don't worry, it'll add a depth of realism to those dreams where we own one too. Every cloud.
Damn, that’s where I’ve been going wrong. I need to take my 01 Freelander off track mode.
This is the type of video so few in your realm make. I encourage you to do more! I do so enjoy learning about all of the "how's it work" and "what's it do" items of a vehicle.
I think a fact that gets overlooked is the personalized climate ability in cars. In an Audi A7 for example, one can change where the air goes, the temperature, and blower speed. Each individual passenger. And after looking, very few automakers offer this kind of ability.
Finally, now I understand how to operate my ferrari.

Very informative video, nice to see someone taking the time to actually explain more than 0-60, or vmax data.
Great video. The controls are almost identical to the 458's. You can tell this was designed by left-hand drivers (Italians) for a market dominated by left-hand drivers. On a left-hand drive car the radio controls are accessible to the passenger; not so for a right-hand drive car. I wonder why didn't think of swapping those to the left side.
Thanks James - this 100% demystified the 458 for me. Like any normal bloke, opening the manual and reading about it was never an option, so I've been making up / ignoring stuff for the last 12 months of ownership. Massive thanks for taking the time to make a video that, let's one honest, doesn't have quite the same monetisable value for you as the ones where you make a Ferrari 'do its thing' :-)
Enjoyed this thanks James. As a recent 458 owner, I found this really informative and actually learned a few very useful things. Main one being that I’ve been putting in neural at stop and wondering why the handbrake wasn’t auto applying 🤦🏻♂️
This was awesome. I shared it with Life of Palos, so hopefully he shares it on his show later today or tomorrow. I'm sure he will. But this was super in-depth and a nice tutorial that dealers should suggest their customers watch. It can be part of the Ferrari Experience Center. Heather Ballentine does in depth tutorials on Lamborghinis, but she is very distracting. Maybe do Aston-Martin or Lamborghini next. I would say Lotus, but I think they use extremely basic functions. Aston-Martin with the DBX and the Superleggera supposedly have a pretty advanced system. Not sure, haven't seen one here in the US.
Fantastic video. Very educational and informative. I hope you do this for other supercars you own or get a chance to drive. Keep up the good work.
Much appreciated, just bought a California and this video really help as so much is different to a ‘normal’ car
Another enjoyable and informative video James, nice work
Thanks! For a very rewarding video about how everything works on the Ferrari.
I’m happy you did this video. Super helpful
Brilliant vid 👍
Very informative! I'd like to watch a video of advice you have about infotainment/navigation (for road trips) in all sorts of different cars - assuming most cars don't have CarPlay or Android Auto, what do you do in those situations? Do you have a few different ways to mount your phone (air vents for e.g.), what about using dedicated GPS devices (in addition, or instead)? It would be interesting to hear what factors into those decisions for you
Finally! Someone understands the basic concept of explaining the basic but Most Important 'things'. Thank you.
Interesting. Thanks.
great video!
Excellent vid mon capitaine
Yes please! More videos like this ,cheers
Such a great video
I see you dropped TheCarGuys' 458 in at the beginning!
this was fun to watch
It took a bit of getting used to, but I actually find having all of the controls on the wheel on my 458 much better than "traditional" controls. But then when I haven't driven it for a month or two in the winter, it always takes me 5 minutes to relearn everything, and I flash the poor unsuspecting person in front of me on the road thinking I'm turning my music volume up...
Lots of info. Great.
I face this paticulate problem every day and i just could not figure those buttons out. Finally a video explaining this to me and the many other ones with the same issues.
More like these please!!
We’ll done video! Thx !
Good idea for a video, keep em coming. Bit more to it than the 360.
The turn signals lol. Hold long for short ,and short for long. Thanks Ferrari
yes, more of this
That f12 is just the perfect spec for that car. So beautiful
Thanks for that. Another reason why a GT4Lusso is the V12 Ferrari to have.
Finally...salient subject matter for the masses! 😁
I appreciate a person who has read the manual.
Hi and yes definitely useful videos to do
That's why I like my 575M. It's just a steering wheel, with a horn. No adornments. But what a great steering wheel...perfect size and thickness, no weird shape, the horn buttons sit on either side right by your thumb and what horn. It's old school Italian with dual trumpets. Makes the most glorious sound. 👌
Didn’t know volume was behind the wheel! Had mine over 3 years 😆👌🏻🙏🏻
Interesting video 🚘🚙🚗👍👍👍👍👍👍
This is more complicated that my TVR T350. Impressive
Good video, very helpful. I gotta say the nav system is better in the 488. Would you be able to do a similar one on the 599 GTB?
Never had so much fun watching a video where a Ferrari is NOT driven.
Curious do the doors automatically lock or do you manually have to push button to lock?
The one I did on my MX5 na was somewhat briefer!
I’ve owned my 488 for a yr and a half. Finally found the toggle radio controls, figured out pit cruise control and linked my cell to Bluetooth. I’ve been too busy enjoying the drive
Where's the fire extinguisher kept and how to use it successfully in the follow up episode.
Excellent, now I know how everything works in the Ferrari that I'll never be able to afford.
Hello, Could you please do some videos on your 968?
would love to see this with the SF90. I hear it has touchscreens on the wheel.
Ferrari really dropped the ball by making this touch screen on their never cars.
This would have come in handy the other day 😆
Thanks for this… you just saved me 5 hours reading in owners manual …. 🤭
How long u have this f12 already ?
Any problem to fix ?
Come on James I have to make a few corrections , those buttons on the transmission tunnel are the modes .. D day mode, N night mode, R race mode .. lol
I thought they introduced the passenger display on the F12, I started to buy Ferrari's again after an unfortunate purchase of a 355. It spent most of the time, I owned it in the shop. I started to buy them, again after I took a test drive in a Roma so now I have the Roma, and a lightly used 812GTS
Rich bro here
Hi Jay, I want to buy a dihatsu copen, if the opportunity comes, I’d love to see a vid on one
I have a suggestion > make your favourite ferrari configuration in configurator
Great video as ever, but speaking of Ferraris, is there any chance you'll get to test the new 296 GTS? My god that thing looks beautiful. If only I had a spare £250,000.
The F12 is such a cool car
I cannot believe how many things I didn't know about
could u add a segment on the voice recognition? cheers
Funny how the max/average speeds some how disappeared lol However I see that you are within a few km of the Autobahn near Kassel ..no problem!
Thank you! How do you roll the windows down?
Window switches are in the centre console, below the gear selectors
@@JayEmmOnCars is this a standard or automatic?
I recently drove my friends Citroen C5 top spec ! the ferrari wheel seems simplicity compared to that .
Informative yet at the same time very confusing with regard to the camera focusing and dare I say it, “hand shaking” quality of the visuals!
However it is very specific to the F 12 and the newer Ferraris I would guess a little more intuitive
Very informative, even for someone like me who won't be able to afford a Ferrari. Mind you, the F12 is my wife's fave... ;)
Love your videos. Why dont you do more supercar « auto » mode and check which one is the best in traffic as an « everyday » supercar ?
Thanks James. Indulge me - I remember reading that the 458 Speciale had F1 style automatic downshifts activated by holding the down shift paddle down making it then blip down 3 gears in fast succession depending where you started from. Does your F12 have the same or does this option even exist on their road cars?
488 have it, F8 aswell I believe that all the modern Ferrari DCTs have it. You have to be braking and it will downshift as much as it can
@@Prox__YT thank you - I’d like to see that in action.
I haven't tried it in the F12 but I don't think it does
@@JayEmmOnCars Well if you do ever feel inclined to do so I’d love to know the answer!:)
Hello, Ferrari ... could you spend some money hiring James to write parts of your manuals?
I want a steering wheel with the same number of buttons as a Ferrari F40.
Where do you get your shirts from? 😆
On the F12 I wonder if the NAV is better in the U.S.
Glad we got that sorted, you lost me just after “hello” and I’ve got one!!
What were they thinking!!!!!!
I hope I never get caught in the rain cos I’m f@@ked if I can fathom the wipers
nah man it's all getting used to, but I still prefer having stalks over buttons for the indicator :)
Lots to like about the 458 which is great looking Ferrari, fast, sounds great and dynamically very impressive but not a fan of the interior with all those buttons on the steering wheel. I much prefer the interior of the 430.
What about to crash the macchina while looking for your station?
Thanks, but I'd rather switch everything off excepting the engine and the safety commands.
At least for quite a while...
if you turn the car off whilst in N it puts the 458 into car wash mode. and confuses the hell out of you trying to work out how to get it back in to drive . . . . never had the radio issue though . . . . . . .
I have a Thrustmaster 458 wheel, so they all look old to me...Ha !
Many thanks, shame about the flashing camera image. Keep well.
Good informative video, but shame the camera made your dash flash.
Yeah frustrating and I will try to find a workaround next time (I know what the issue is)
An auto-mobile has an auto-speed innovation colloquially named "cruise control". It auto-matically sets your speed, so you do not have to worry about it. If an auto-mobile equipped with auto-speed is to be driven within a civilized society, aka "the streets", it makes sense to me that it should have its cruise control on the steering wheel in a priority position such that it can be adjusted without removing the hand from the wheel. If you are going to drive the car only on a race track, then scrap the cruise control altogether. I habitually drive through speed limit zones well below the pit road 60mph and I demand - DEMAND - a cruise control that will match school zone limits. Otherwise, take your piece of junk and crash it.
Horn and indicator buttons on the wheel. Tesla yoke isn't so weird after all....
Interesting but difficult to watch due to shaky hand cam and flickering dashboard.
I'd love a "greatest hits track" of engine noises. I don't care how long it is.
some of the software "features" are tragic! It'd take an intern 10 mins to sort them out. I appreciate that Ferrari are not a tech company that makes cars, but people are paying >200 k for this!
I'm still trying to get my head around the model numbering system!
I hope some day this guide will be useful, I'm a bit confused why everybody freaks out about the indicators Harley Davidson use a similar setup on there handlebars left indicator on the left bar right indicator on the right bar simple👍maybe if the people in question drove the cars instead of keeping them it would not be a issue🤣🤣
You can't turn the handlebars upside down though
@@Lukeywoodsey you can if you fall off🤣🤣
Am I the only one watching this video who can’t afford and won’t afford a Ferrari yet I am hooked like this is relevant to my Porsche 🤓
liked with comment
...and now, 23 minutes later, I'm 23 miles further down the road in my not particularly complicated mk1 Fiesta, with a tail wind granted, thank you. Fuses have now blown in my exceedingly fat head watching and listening to all that. Errrr, no thank you. Can you now explain in detail, the meanings and uses of Algebra please?
“Pit Speed”. For Cruise. How random is that!
Can you do a video on understanding women ? I’m serious 😳
Im 61 and no Ferrari in sight, but hey ho who knows!
You have a very fine channel but I really don't need to know anything about the controls on any Ferrarri. They're nice, but a bit expensive for my needs and budget. BTW, you will be pleased to know that my preferred pronunciation is Ferrar. I get some flack from pedants but as you well understand, it's none of their business!
Damn right
@@JayEmmOnCars 😉
Youre a brave man wearing blue jeans on that crema leather.... giving me mild anxiety lol
Interesting purchase, but i think you'll have sold this within 6 months 🙂 I'm betting £20.00
Perfect, you have just solved my 488 indicator problem.....I probably should have read the manual!!
Great video covering how to set the car up. In my 2010 California, not nearly as complicated, but still complicted.
Why do I have such a hard time learning to shift with those flappy paddles? I always forget and drop my hand to the center console, wave my hand around trying to find the shifter, bang the rev limiter and THEN remember the freaking paddles. Arrrrgg. :)
