    Jim, you mentioned in one last videos that maybe you'd go to Ontario.. if you do, you need to go onto Manitoulin Island.. do the ride around Lake Superior.. you won't be disappointed..

      I worked in Thunder Bay for 6 years in the 1990s and love the north shore of Lake Superior. I have not done the US side but am looking at it. Been years since I was on Manitoulin and that was in a car. Been thinking of going back and doing the ferry to Tobermory.

    Encourage all reading this to take Jim up on his fabulous tour. I've been to Newfoundland twice by Motorcycle... While I enjoyed the Trans Lab Highway, as stated here, much of it is still gravel, mosquitos vicious and the section through Quebec is really challenging when slimey (in other words, most of the time in Summer). Crossing at Port au Basques is the best bet. Trout River is great, check out The Tablelands in Gros Morne, too.. especially if you have any interest in geology. As a "Newfie," Jim is too humble to tell you that the people of the island are the friendliest you'll ever meet. Wish I could make the trip this year....This would be truly remarkable. Good on you Jim for playing tour guide/host. Darn.. so wish I could do this!

Now a few of us are riding the Cabot Trail prior to boarding the overnight ferry to Port aux Basque. (10:00 am at the Baddeck Tim Hortons July 17). If I was not part of your group (planning 2023), do the parks you mentioned require passes or reservations?

    • @OldGuyonaBike
      @OldGuyonaBike  2 роки тому +1

      The national parks like Gros Morne require a daily pass which is independent of the camping fees. $10.50/day in Gros Morne. I always suggest getting the Discovery Pass which is good for a whole year and covers admission fees at all national parks and historic sites. www.pc.gc.ca/en/voyage-travel/admission
      The provincial parks have a $10.00 daily vehicle fee (as opposed to national per person fee) and that is reduced to $7 if you are camping. I usually get the $50 all parks seasonal pass as I will stay 6-10 nights per year. As a Newfoundland senior, I also get a discount. www.parksnl.ca/reservations/#vehicle
      I tend to reserve weekend nights especially around July 1st and August 1st. Some of the campgrounds are small, like Green Point in Gros Morne. National park reservation services start up at the end of Feb. usually and provincial doesn't start until towards the end of April each year.

  • @robertberg9070
    @robertberg9070 2 роки тому

    I plan to tour NL in July also. Do I need to make reservations at campgrounds and Ferries? This has been extremely helpful in setting a route.

    • @OldGuyonaBike
      @OldGuyonaBike  2 роки тому

      On my phone, between selling my house and temp housing and limited internet. A lone bike can often get on the ferry but it is getting harder. I would advise booking especially around July 1st weekend or August 1st weekend. Seems cabins are pretty well all booked up. Do a phone reservation if you want to get on a cabin waiting list. You can't do that online. Smaller provincial parks will be full on those weekends or will be. Gros Morne has 5 campgrounds so may not be a problem. With 5-6 campsites needed for my group I suggested everyone book as we also had a set time table. 2 tents/2 bikes per site (rest hotel/cabins)

    • @OldGuyonaBike
      @OldGuyonaBike  11 місяців тому

      It used to be a really big problem when I first came to the island in '96. Not just the distance but the fact that some of the smaller gas stations closed at 6 pm. It is not as big of a problem now. I think the furthest between gas stations on or just off the road might be 220 km? If you have a cruising range of 250+ you will be ok. Check the map, gas stations at most major junctions... gas up when down half a tank.

      My apologizies to anyone from Labrador who takes offense. I do live in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador but I do live on the island of Newfoundland. That is a geographical location rather than a political one. I have only been to Labrador once and I do want to go back again. If and when I do, I will probably title it as touring Labrador as it will be the geographical location of the tour. It is similar to saying one is going to travel the Cabot Trail. One does not say they are traveling Nova Scotia when they are are only doing one section. Again, my apologizies if you have taken offense.
