      That one year -1986 - Frank Miller became an absolute legend and instantly one of the greatest creators in Comic Book History.
      This one remains the best Daredevil story ever - and one of the best Marvel stories in general.
      Just epic in every way.
      Amazing that they have not just adapted this story straight away in a DD movie or in the series
      The writers literally would not need to change a single thing.
      That one page where DD returns after
      “ give me a red”
      Where he is standing there in the flames
      is just one of the most memorable images ever in comics.

    When I was 18 I saved £70 to meet Frank Miller in London and get his autograph. When I was deciding what to get signed, the guy who runs my LCS recommended a Daredevil artist edition that I couldn't afford, so he sold it to me at cost as he thought it'd be worth it. Legend. Miller is a fantastic artist, and an even better writer.

    Frank miller wrote a comic book about the phrase: a man who has nothing to lose is a man without fear. He unfolded that premise in a perfect philosophical character driven violent tale. I love this comic book forever.

    Great flick through and analysis of the individual issues guys. I bought the individual issues from UK newsagents in 1986, and, the final issue with DD, Captain America and Nuke, are the most phenomenal action movie comics I've ever read. I genuinely hope the Disney+ series lives up to the storyline. {But, I think it won't, and, I will be disappointed.}

    "Daredevil - Born Again" remains a stone-cold classic.
    That magnificent series got me back into reading comics again, after twenty years
    of neglect.
    For sheer pacing, plot, and artwork it remains impressive.

    I remember getting one of the issues or a couple of issues in this series as a little kid and being so frustrated, because it was too focused on Murdock and other characters and all the adult stuff that didn't make a lot of sense to me, and Daredevil barely even appeared and he was all broken and weak. But the art and the atmosphere stayed with me, for good or bad, that's why I remember it decades later.

  • @frdh1357
    @frdh1357 4 роки тому

    Read these as a kid, and they floored me too. Only had vaguely heard of Miller because of Ronin. Had read a few Daredevils before this, which were one issue stories that didn't change much in his life. I kept expecting Miller to drop the tension in the story and eventually return to that. That is until Turk (the pettiest of DD's criminal informants) stabbed him. Then I knew all bets were off. I'll never forget that worm's eye view of Thor silhouetted against the sky and commanding down the storm. I loved Simonson's Thor, but I'd never seen him portrayed as an awe inspiring deity. It really reinforced that Murdock's world was not as cosmic as the other heroes.

    Great video and a really formative comic for me. I read this one, Dark Knight and City of glass when I was about 14. Born again reeeally creeped me out. I flipped through my old German edition while watching and the colours don't work at all on the shiny paper they used, which kinda makes it even more unsettling. I'm guessing the translation isn't great too, so after over twenty years, I guess I should upgrade...

    The compression of the story telling compared today is jarring every time I re-read this. Would today's sensibilities allow for the complete fall of Matt and the reveal of the villain in a single issue? My LCS owner at the time used to swear that FM was assisting DM on the art because ..."he was never this good".

    Question: About those last two issues. I had always heard that Miller left the book sooner than he intended for one reason or another. The original story was supposed to wrap up when the Kingpin was taken down once and for all: The Avengers and DD hitting him from the top while the rest of the Mob hit him from below, both over the Nuke situation. Meanwhile Ben Urich’s stories in the Bugle would have ruined him publicly as the Kingpin breaks down mentally just as Matt had in the beginning. Did I hear wrong on that? It always helped me make some kind of sense out of those last two issues.

    It’s disturbing how life imitated art here for Ed,his own life was dismantled for what seems like a misunderstanding and missing context. How could anyone know what his intentions were? It did look bad but again we don’t know what was in his head. He deserved the chance to explain himself and defend himself. It’s not right to be able to so easily ruin someone without hearing both/all sides. Idk if this comment will be posted and I guess it doesn’t matter

    The motif at the beginning of each chapter remark the resurrection of Matt Murdock. Each chapter he is more and more in fetal position (a return to the birth stage, another way of "death") until the final proper chapter, "Born Again" where all the page composition (white wall and white bed) is a cross which means resurrection, of course. he reborn to resolve the contradiction between Matt Murdock and DareDevil.

    I disagree that this was all that PIVOTAL in terms of being dark and edgy. it's on a continuum with other stuff that dealt with drug and alcohol use (green arrow/lantern) and more adult topics. some x-men graphic novels like "God loves, man kills" was pretty dark and wolverine (also under miller) was going the same way. and while american comics were always written off as kid stuff, I think the readership extended very much into high school and college students. whether the mass perception was that it was for kids, most of the writing did not reflect that at all - and for a pretty long time actually.

    I remember that the “Born Again” story arc brought me back to Daredevil. I was 15 when this hit the stands, and was falling out of love with the “ fights-n-tights “ style of comics. I had discovered the “ American Flagg :Hard Times “ trade paperback/graphic novel around that time and my sight picture had been expanded ( along with finding Bud Plant’s mail order comics, who was very Indy/underground centric. I’m old, and I lived-and still do - in Mississippi. NOT the hotbed of comics buying that you would think it would be ) but this Mazzuchelli guy took me right back to those early Miller/Jansen Daredevil issues that made me a fan! Mazzuchelli’s art was not what I was into at the time, but by issue three of the arc, I was HOOKED! Also, the “Iran/Contra “ scandal was a couple of years prior to this story arc. I watched Ollie North’s testimony on TV during my summer vacation. The two issues featuring Nuke really brought back those memories of governmental betrayal at the time. Miller was out for blood , and I’m surprised that he was able to get the arc through the editorial staff at Marvel! Great show guys, thanks for bringing those memories back to me!

    37:00 - that splash page with the implied catholic cross composition! Squint a bit if you don't see it at first. I think that's how I noticed it the first time - I saw the page out of the corner of my eye and noticed the large white cross and I was blown away.
    And I just now noticed (at 48:41) for the final panel of the issue, at the very bottom of the panel we see a tiny cross hanging around Matt's neck.

    1:02:51 You're quite right about that page, Jim. On both collections I have of this story, a 1987 TPB and the DD by Miller Omnibus Companion, the art does bleed on that page. Furthermore, on the Omnibus extra material they reproduce the page as it was originally published, with this caption: "Daredevil #232, page 6 was art-corrected in the original comic to soften Karen Page's features at the request of then editor in chief Jim Shooter and also was placed incorrectly so that the artwork didn't run full bleed. The page as it originally ran is presented here for the sake of completeness." (personally, I couldn't see that much difference on Karen's features, btw).
    Also, the Omnibus has the full script for issue 233 (kind of a weird choice, since is probably the weakest one... but worth checking out, anyway) and 24 pages of Mazzucchelli's rough pencils, seven of which aren't featured in IDW's Artist's Edition, including the page with the cab underwater.
