I had Mignola sign a copy of this one time. He said that this issue was "the straw that broke the camel's back" and, when it was finished, he quit mainstream comics for good and never looked back. So, in many ways, you can credit this issue for inspiring the creation of Hellboy.
Did he say WHY? What was it about this that ruined it all for him?
@@RobertNorton12013 He didn't give specifics. He just said it was a bad experience. My guess is that he had problems with the editors. Too much oversight.
@@aaronsasson5148 Marvel editorial sounds like it was pretty overbearing at the time, especially on the X books.
@@aaronsasson5148 Marvel was a different beast back then.
@@RobertNorton12013 they actually had an interview with him last year where he explains it. I think he was already having trouble as he didn’t really care about the characters he was drawing, and then the cover he was supposed to do was done by someone else, an editor made a snide comment, and so it kind of just pushed him to stop working with marvel, and then he didn’t really wanna go back to dc, because he didn’t really care about those characters, which sort of led him to creating the hellboy book
If all X-Factor looked like this, I’d buy the whole lot up today!
I had a Mike Mignola Wolverine : Jungle Adventure book, I think that wasy first experience seeing his work. I don't think I fully appreciated his style back then. His simple line work let colors pop but his heavy shadows really added some atmosphere to the story.
Holy Crap! “The Viper!”
I felt the same way when I first saw it.
I turned to Donahue or something whenever they ran a rerun of that episode.
This was great. Mignola is one of my favorites.
The only guy that can put shadows in all the wrong places and yet have them in exactly all the right places!!
Mike Mignola’s one of my favourite comic artists!
Absolutely LOVE Mignola's style, obsessed with it!
On page 24, visible at 13:50, the figure of Sauron in the second panel is very Mignola-esque. And that close-up on Sauron's face isn't nearly as good as Liefeld's Sauron we saw just a couple issues ago in this series!
Gee, thanks for reminding me of the Viper, Ed! The worst part was I heard that joke before I saw the episode. So I started disappointed!
Man, I dont remember the viper from GI joe. I always remember the story from Scary Stories to tell in the dark.
LOL god bless Ed for bringing up "The Viper", the nadir of GI Joe storytelling. I was red face mad over that episode, glad to hear I wasn't the only one, man.
I got my first Hellboy when I was 9 and my life was changed forever. Thank you for starting my morning right guys! 🙏🏽
Love that Mignola touch in this. Gives it an animated vibe. Kind of reminds me when I first watched Transformers Animated. Was a young diehard G1 fan and couldn’t see the wood from the trees. Now Animated is top tier Transformers for me. Derrick James Wyatt design has stood the test of time just like this slick Mignola work here 👍
When I turned that page from Rob to Mike I was so damn stoked.
I felt the same way when I got this issue, it was a swerve, but like you guys I appreciate Mignola’s art now. I recommend looking at his art on Alpha Flight, it’s great.
I totally understand what you guys are saying it took awhile to understand and appreciate the great of Mignola was always bummed on the covers and interiors but now I have a great live and respect for him and his work.
My first exposure to Mignola was the first issue of the Rocket Raccoon limited series. I wasn't aware that it was him until years later.
That issue looks amazing
Have you guys ever discussed how Jim Lee aped a lot of Mike Mignola's Superman stuff (mist obscuring feet, thin ankles, staging)?
Great video!
A cool riff on this book can be found in Marvel Team-Up #19, Volume 3, written by Robert Kirkman. Cory Walker does an awesome Mignola riff and it hits a lot of those 90's visuals we all love. I believe there are two double-page "turn the comic on its side" spreads, just for instance.
It's a great nostalgic experiment and can probably be found in the quarter bins alongside X-Force 8.
young me never appreciated mignola, but looking at this he's pretty amazing. the way i can tell sometimes is the weight of the characters. they feel part of their environment. it's great stuff. plus he simplifies things at the right times, he knows when to add detail and emphasis.
I thought I was the only one who had "the viper is coming" stuck in my head this entire time. I'm 39 years old and that episode is still something I remember! I was so excited to see who this viper was that had all the Joe's tense...and then...
I didn’t even know about this. Kayfabe enlightening me once again!
My childhood (Liefeld) and my teen years (Mignola) crashing together. So good.
Born in 81... I hated that Vindow Viper episode. I loved the Alley Viper figure and was hoping it would be him....
9:11 That's a Mignola thing. He uses it in variations in everything.
Former Marvel Bullpenner here. Love you guys' show, That said, pronunciation check: Buccelato = "byoo-cell-lah-toe." Wiacek = "why a check."
I remember having the same response you guys had to this issue as a kid. I also remember having a 4 issue Marvel adaptation of Dracula, the sick one with Keanu and Gary Oldman, penciled by him. Wasn’t able to truly appreciate those books until years later.
I miss you guys.
I know I had this issue and now I don't know where I stored it! DOH!!! must find it!!!
Fun look guys. Used to have this issue but couldn't find it today. Laughed out loud recalling the GIJoe episode. You guys keep on doing your thing. Appreciate your effort and time. You guys rock.
Same. I hated this issue when it came out, and now it's the only X-Force ting I have left.
I was already a fan of Mignola and loved this issue. Some younger fans didn't have a wider appreciation of styles yet... Keep it up guys. Love the channel.
15:01 that Greg Capullo drawing is “Quasar” on the left was awesome
Oh yea Capullo on Quasar was phenomenal.
Just love that type of coloring
wow i didnt know this was a thing! this is gorgeous! Mignola is my king of comics for a reason man, he even brings an elegance to goofy 90s bizz
i haven’t thought of that episode of gi joe in YEARS!!!!
I definitely remember the "Viper" G.I. Joe episode. We were bamboozled for sure.
heh. One of the three Mignola original pages in my collection is from this issue. :)
I wish they still made these t-shirts 6:53
GI Joe was such a tongue in cheek show.
Dam had no idea this is sitting in the 49 cent bin. Gonna have to scoop it up tomorrow
You guys need to do a vid on Mignola's Hulk run. So cool (and different) from what was going on at the time.
Even as a boy, I loved Mignola's works and would collect everything he drew, but because I wasn't into Liefeld's work, I probably missed this issue!
I remember buying this issue in my LCS and dissappointed by the inside page. Mignola eventually grew on me. Fantastic layouts and artwork in this issue.
13:55 Dan Panosians Cable looks like Dan Panosian^^..... all artists draw themselves into the art^^
Thanks for showing us the thumbnails or page breakdown by Liefeld. Mike definitely improved upon them.
No Rob? Was a disappointment when I was young but a gem looking back at it.
I am glad everyone grew up. Rob was flashy without substance. His art is actually cringe worthy when I look at them now. All those lines were just to hide his lack of art training. And Mike is actually admired for the real talent he is now that we are older.
I kinda want you to look at Doom Force. Not sure you would have read it as kids, but I'd be very intrigued.
Then also the first Milligan/Allred X-Force.
I love Magnolia! I'v been a fan since way, way back. So I was effin' psyched when I got this book home and opened it up to find his art in this issue! It's a kick ass issue, too!
Enjoy!
Mignola's best work in my opinion was his work on the "Chronicles of Corum" printed by first Comics.
Alan Wagner: good stuff certainly, including great story. I’m a big fan of the Michael Moorcock books too.
the time where mike's comics and collectibles in orlando was my comic shop they had the whole liefeld run of x-force i eventually sold to golden apple comics.
I'm really hoping this is leading to a Mignola shoot interview
One thing that jumps out to me about this comic is how little background is drawn. The environment is just a suggestion on most of those pages.
I was wondering what Big Bear was doing on the cover lol
It's really funny how as a kid I would've thought Mignola style was trash compared to Liefeld, same goes how I was a sucker for guys like Diesel in the WWF back in the day. It's not until you get older that you appreciate , or see the full picture of whats actually good. Or maybe tastes just mature? or maybe I was just a sucker kid that fell for the cool marketing.
My favorite episode of GI joe
3:18 I remember the Viper! I want to vipe your windows!
I was working in a comic shop when this came out and some kid was whinging and bitching about the art on this issue. I told him, "This is the BEST art on X-FORCE, the only one I really like." He kinda settled down and said, "I guess it's not so bad" and bought it. Hopefully, over the years, that kid has come around like you two have.
You may know the answer to my question: Why did Mike Mignola change his style from his series of the Incredible Hulk and Hell Boy? I like his style from his Hulk series then the style he adopted years later. I brought all his Hulk series because I was blown away by his art before Hell Boy.
the Wiper is coming!!!!
I can appreciate Mignola much more now as an adult then when I was a kid. I am sure that this guest issue was a disappointment to me as a 13-year-old kid. I liked Mike's work on hellraiser and wolverine. His women just were not attractive looking and that was a big deal for me back in the '90s haha
great content, great coments
Holy smokes. I’ve never seen the Liefeld roughs for this! Crazy.
woah...! I see mignola, I click. did not know about this
Orange portal...blue portal...hmm. Cable got his tech from Aperture confirmed!
I didn't like it at first either but it grew on me like a fungus... I got Gotham by gaslight after this to see Mignolas batman.
please do the mignola aliens story! i love that one
If you want some primo Mignola Marvel check out Wolverine #41 for a center fold 'Wolverine Gallery' featuring Cable.
Fun fact I have the thumbnail for this video hang on my wall next to my bed. It was a pinup from some comic or other that I pulled it out of
I wanna see a top 10 best guest artist. I didn’t even know he did this book 🤷♂️
That was one of my most favorite X-force comics ...It showed there was so much more and then they farted on it
That is the only episode of GIJoe I remember.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Wiper is coming
Art Adams was. my heto
I remember that G.I. Joe episode.
just picked it up on ebay haha
The viper is coming…575
Ok watch when serpentor raids the freakin white house ..."Arise Serpentor Arise" pt 3???
Haha! I only saw The Viper episode of GI Joe this year, not only did it have a kinda racist punchline, but Roadblock manages to fall out of a window trying to dunk in a basketball game. Just quality through and through.
Anyway, yeah. My first Mignola and I was originally disappointed when I turned the page, but soon warmed up. So good.
Can I ask what happened to the Tell Me Something I Don't Know podcasts?
We let the hosting service expire. That project was very fun but from an audio/production standpoint, it's rough. I remember a number of our guests using Skype for the first time in order to be on that show. - Jim
@@CartoonistKayfabe I personally would love to hear them again.
In hindsight since I had this issue, Mignola was the better artist.
I've come to vipe your windows. Ugh.
The Viper! ua-cam.com/video/eyXrwbg1G7c/v-deo.html
Ah, that sucks so hard. Say whatever you want but Liefeld's style had a LOT of appeal and X-Force was driven by it. McFarlane's Cable sucked and so does Mignola's, I don't even remember other versions.
Lol that’s GI Joe episode was the worst
