    I've had this older traxxas nitro rustler for a few years so far, I rarely run it and I don't really like it. I only paid about 110 for it on eBay and it was in terrific condition as seen here.
    It's a classic and historic name and platform that many RC hobbyist can remember or have seen, that's why I picked it up.
    Although popularity does not mean it's the best, it's definitely not the best at anything other than being fast. Sometimes being fast is good enough, but not when you compare it to it's competition of the day.
    Lets start this up, do some runs, and discuss the cool and weird things about this historic vintage RC.

    The Rustler was my first Nitro RC and i loved it.. i never had some of the problems my friends had but eventually i started burning up engines after my 3rd engine for it and no help from my hoppy shop because everyone was switching over to electric and as the cost climbed i looked elsewhere for my RC addiction...great video it brings me back to my teens befor the war of electric and nitro/gas........ Nitro/gas as a heartbeat!!! Electric----------------------- flat line

      Hey man!! I totally agree. I don't even look forward to driving my fast brushless electrics anymore. I think nitro is making a comeback, and the GAS is in full swing now too. Was your model the 2.5 like mine of the PRO 15 motor. Back then engines cost serious bucks too, not like you could just order cheap ones on eBay, right...

      The nitro rustler was my very first rc I picked it up used and broke. For 50$ needed new planetary gears just rebuilt the whole tranny for ten bucks still run it till this day I've had the old 2.5 that broke the engine Mount off it put a hole in the block put a 3.3 on it ripped so hard super fast then cracked the connecting rod I have the new blue top 2.5 on it now. Back when I first bought it and brought it to my local hobby shop they always where like ohh no a nitro but it is still one of my favorite rcs. It's full aluminum and roll cage with a steel rr spur gear hardly any issues with it now

    It's also good to pull the glow plug and put the piston at Botom Dead Center during the after run procedure while the engine is still hot. The reason I do this is to maximize the "pinch" or compression of the piston and sleeve.

      @hybrid32494  3 роки тому

      hey my dude! you're 100% right, I don't remember if I mentioned that in this video because I was only mentioning some elements here. Anyway, yes you would want to always leave the piston anywhere other than at the top when it's not running, good point.

    Back in 2009 we had one of these in the Hobby Shop as a demo RC truck. Engine starts and runs easily. The back tires were worn smooth because the drivers loved to do donuts with it in the parking lot. The problem was that it was always breaking something like the front or rear A arms, the clutch or other chassis parts. It was pretty badly treated and spent a lot of time sitting while we ordered replacement parts.

    • @hybrid32494
      @hybrid32494  5 років тому

      hey man!! great comment!! I can already see the bald rear tires, ahaha. Overall these did an ok job at being fun and cheap, but the front end design just like all the rustler/stampede variant was weak and always broke during any impact. Thats ok, they were fairly cheap to replace. A set of RPM arms and hubs would make this a solid RC.

  • @eddyrejserbil4229
    @eddyrejserbil4229 5 років тому +2

    Man I love this thing, back when traxxas actually did the real deal!
    Got a newer one myself and I mean it runs just sweet though I just can't get Control of that idle for some reason.
    But tbh the chassi is still kinda the same which makes it even more great.
    Though the brakes as you mentioned I've had the same problem but the reason was really just so silly because it's using a metal bar that simply pushes to the disc brake and for me it just bent over and simply caused alot of trouble due to when putting the brakes on more it was braking while in idle but still not braking any good while running kinda the only issue that I've had with it as far as mechanical issues is concerned.
    Still though might not be the trouble you're up against and also still a cheap fix, but that really was just a bit disappointing how easily it was bent.

    • @hybrid32494
      @hybrid32494  5 років тому +2

      LOL, thats ironic we both got the same braking and idling/cooling issues. As far as I know the idling issue is because of the carb, back when traxxas introduced this first generation composite carb it was just bad at holding a tune, thats still true today. Yes, my brake geometry is good, I also have the brakes engaged a little at idle, otherwise they don't grab at all. And mine Is using th pretty powerful traxxas 2075 servo too. After this video I'm considering a JATO, what do you think?

    • @eddyrejserbil4229
      @eddyrejserbil4229 5 років тому

      @@hybrid32494 Sorry for late response have been out skiing hehe, so then the jato is wheelies and speed runs, probably alot better on asphalt than the rustler but to be honest I don't know very much about the 3.3 Engine people keep telling me it's trash and people keep telling me it's gold hard to tell but seems delicate and maybe a struggle tuning but seems to be a blast once you get it working the other hand then I don't know if you're going to run any vintage stock or if upgrading is an option but I'm guessing judging by former that it'll be the 3.3.
      But myself I'm a fan of the jato and of course the nitro, sounds like a good idea to me!

    I really look forward to these videos. They're very very good. Excellent review. You seemed to cover all the points. And the GoPro footage was great. That sound is still one of the coolest things out there. I wonder if they always ran a little hot because they were a little too lean. Something to think about. Thanks for this great content. I have a starter box I never use and am happy to send it to you for the cost of shipping. You would just need to update the batteries inside. Up to you. Peace.

    • @hybrid32494
      @hybrid32494  5 років тому +1

      hey man, thanks for the offer. Im currently biding on some rcs with a starter box in the auctions, so hopefully that will work out for now. Have you noticed how exaggerated the cooling fins of the 2.5 engine are, the whole motor has cooling fins all around it (looks great). probably because traxxas knew that they run too hot at all times. LOL. I think the composite carb they used was just not the best, I think this was the first mainstream use of the composite carb and it probably just wasn't good.

    And if you want a little better power from a 2.5 get a good aluminum pipe and losi 3.4 carburetor and you will be surprised at how much better it is also if you go with a decent fuel like Byron's 20/12 or 30/11 it will run a little cooler than traxxas fuel that runs hotter because of how much oil they put in it giving you a leaner tune and a hotter engine

    • @hybrid32494
      @hybrid32494  5 років тому +3

      you're right about the better pipe. Do you think the newer blue traxxas resonator pipe is better than this one? I like to keep my RC as original and close to stock brand parts as possible. BTW I run BYRON 20% nitro with 12% oil. Traxxas top fuel is too overpriced, even compared to that. It's possible the composite carb is tough to tune and expands when it gets hot and the tune changes as it heats up, causing it to run extra lean If I don't richen it.

    • @hybrid32494
      @hybrid32494  5 років тому +2

      hey man!! Basically there is always a loss due to friction and extra rotating mass/weight on the crankshaft as it spins. Since the EZ-Start motor spins the one way bearing, which spins the string shaft and therefore turns over the crankshaft. Also the extra mass of the entire system compared to a pull start was something speed freaks cared about back then, today it seems marginal honestly.

      @hybrid32494  5 років тому +2

      you're right about the original RC10 Gt bodies being ugly too, but I think when this rustler was sold they were much better looking by that time. I also should have mentioned the terrible traxxas rustler Philips screw hardware on this, OMG (it's literally toy grade hardware). By far the best looking bodies were HPI at this time.

    • @theclubhouse1209
      @theclubhouse1209 5 років тому +1

      yup, i used to buy the proline bodies once the original was trash. the later flat (blue) chassis bodies where nicer looking. you're right about the old rc10gt engines being junk, once I went to O.S. I never looked back. :)) I bet my rg.21 powered gt could run with that jato lol.

    • @hybrid32494
      @hybrid32494  5 років тому +2

      Yep, thats also why I only try looking for used nitros with the OS motors. I just ran my old HPI RS4 with a 12 CV-X, best low end engine ever. I should have mentioned that the RC10GT was cheaper than this when they were new. Their engines look like the modern low end exceed or HSP motors, literally the same cooling head design. I still need to get the RC10GT too, been pilling up the stadium trucks from this era.
