It would be cool if you could make a video on developing something for private players. That is what I see myself doing. Friend is curious about playing the game, I introduce him. Thematic builds and scenarios probably play a huge role then, but they should also get a good impression of the variety in mechanics. Heroes with special abilities or magic, some ranged, spearmen, some cavalry. Rule of cool is most important. No beginner gets excited playing with Moria orcs when the other guy has the Fellowship. Tips for making Evil armies exciting to a buddy would be appreciated, too. Maybe even some suggestions for useful terrain or anecdotes on what was the most successful when you introduced others to the game.
wow that was great and good to see that the game is still strong I played 10yrs ago and still have a dwarf and elven army in metal and want to start again not sure if I like the new books like the hobbit just enjoy the old rules anyway cheers Alan

I'm playing a Warband from Dunland with Viking and Anglo-Saxon miniatures from other companies that still greatly seem to fit in with LOTR models. My problem really is that I love more elite, Undead and monstrous stuff... Troll only lists, Twin Dragons, Balrog + minor daemons, Mirkwood spiders, Sauron with Nazgul or just The 9 riders... most of which sounds and looks awesome, but winning battles not so much. Usually mixing is better in this game, and some of the stronger elite only options are on the good side: Three hunters, Fellowship, Thorins Company, Fangorn (aka Treebeard's Boys from the Wood), Gwahir with Eagles... Also Dead of Dunharrow are pretty sweet. But damn I wish stuff like Trolls, Spiders and Dragons would better work as stand alone armies. I would adore a troll only army that would be more than an expensive joke.

Thinking about having the two goblin kings, one captian, two cave trolls and then ordinary goblin warriors for the rest. Should bring me up to 500p. What do you think? Swarm them with goblins and smash them with the trolls! 😆 Should be fun to play at least!
This is a great army! I have played a lot of Moria. At 500 points its really good. The only change that I would make is to throw in a batswarm. They are super good at taking on big heroes and they can fly around and grab objectives
Which of the newest two starters do you think is better? The pelinor fields set seems to be a better as far as models go but the newer one has a scenrio book, terrain and updated rules.
Thinking of beginning. Been playing middle earth: shadow of war so naturally I’m interested in going with a Ringwraith/Nazgûl army. I’ll most likely get all nine of them and a couple winged just to round the collection, but would nine Nazgûl be a suitable army or would it be too much/too little?
Hello. Thanks for this vidéo. As a first army I plan to play Aragorn, The King of the Dead, Dead Warriors and add later maybe the Dead Heralds, Gimli, Legolas, a few Dead Riders and Arwen. Painting the Dead is in progress. I was told that Arwen could not be played in the special legion 😭😭😭 As a second one, I plan to play Mordor. The new box and, when available, the 9 ringwraith riders.
Thanks for the comment! The return of the king legion is a great one to start with. Its low model count and high defence which is good when you are new. Legendary legion are made to reflect to lore of Middle Earth so you certainly wont be finding Arwen in this one because she was back in Rivendell at the time. Mordor is a great one to go to next!
So I'm really interested in this game I grew up with lord of the rings the hobbit and the symiriliam, never new this was a game. So my local game store has the pellonor fields starter box should I pick it up?
Thanks for the comment. I would definitely recommend getting it! The Pellanor fields is the old starter kit and the Battle of Osgiliath is the new one. They both have the same rulebook in them so it's up to you which one you like more. The Battle of Pellanor fields has more models and a Nazgul on Fell beast but the Battle of Osgiliath comes with more heroes and terrain but won't come out until Christmas and is a bit more expensive

Thanks for the comment The rule book is an edition out of date. The game is 95% the same but the main difference in the heroic actions and there are a few more new spells. For learning the basics it's totally fine
I am sorry to bother you here and for the offtopic, but I hope you can solve a doubt we have in my playing group that is causing a disrruption every time we play Do you think that the special rule Backstabbers also apply to Prone models? I am asking, because according to the Rules Manual, Prone models: "When resolving Strikes against a Prone model, they are always considered to be Trapped." Thank you in advance. Regards.
No worries at all thanks for the comment. Backstabbers says that you get +1 to wound when striking a trapped model. On page 46 it says that a prone model counts as trapped. This means you do get your backstabbers special rule. There isn't any ambiguity on the wording with this one so Corsairs and Prowlers are great!
Thanks for the comment. A 2k army is absolutely massive in middle earth most games would not get over 1000 I usually make my armies 750 points and then start on the next one. If you were really keen on 2000 points of ghosts I would have the king of he dead, two heralds of the dead, the three hunters (Legolas, Aragon, Gimli), half a dozen riders of the dead, and as many warriors of the dead as you could get. All upgraded with shields and half with spears. Easterlings are awesome there are a lot of ways to build an army of them. I would start with the new heros that they have added to the faction. The dragon Emperor, Rutabi, and Borogir after them I would add a horse of troops, a dragon Knight on horse and some Kataphracts Good luck starting your armies!

A great inclusion would be the Battle Host for each faction! With the Gondor side if you didn't want to add the Battle Host I would add in some Gondor knights and then some citadel guard or fountain court guard. Because Gondor comes with 3 heroes in the box the command set isn't as nessesary for them but the banner is always a good inclusion For Mordor you have a great army with the starter and the commanders. You definitely don't need to add much but a great beast of Gorgoroth is always a fun inclusion. I would add in some Morgul Knights for some heavy cavalry as well

Hi, thank you very much for explaining the hole "army starting proces". I wanted to start a Army for MESBG for a long time. (played Age of SIgmar for some years, but as it's like for the most of the people, LotR is the place where the Heart lies). So, my Question is, what is the best way to Start an Army with a Mumakil? I know, it's one of this question where expierenced palyers think "man, there are better ways to start", but i absolutly love the Model and it's a Dream since my Childhood to Paint one (one of my Classmates had one, back when he came out) So what are the best ways to build an Army with a Mumakil? Maybe someone can help me? ps: is the Mumakil War Leader from ForgeWorld a good option to consider? (because for Style reasons he is^^)
Hell yeah this is not how I would recomend starting but its going to be awesome hahaha. With a Mumak army I like to use all cavalry for the models who aren't riding the mumak. I would pick up the mumak, Suladan, and two boxes of Haradrim raiders. This will give you a solid 750 point army that will take a lot of learning but is very powerful when you figure it out. I won a 650 point tournament with a similar list several years ago. The mumak warleader from Forgeworld is a great choice. He is a lot more expensive in points than a regular mumak but is a lot stronger. Good luck!

@@kevinharkam8010 Your horse can die but it doesn't happen all that often for my 12 raiders that I had in my army I only had 3-4 dismounts and that was enough

My wife and I just immigrated to Australia in September from the US, where the scene for this game is practically dead. I’ve been learning how to play for about a month or so now. My friend and I had a 650 point game earlier tonight. My Isengard vs his Vanquishers of the Necromancer. 40 models vs 4. And he absolutely destroyed me 😂 I’ve never played a game where that is a thing that can happen.
The only thing I would add to this advice is to never leave home without a Banner if your faction has access to them. They are always worth the points without exception and learning to position them effectively is a skill every player needs to learn
I'm not familiar with that company but there are lots of alternative miniatures out there. Lots of people 3D print aspects of their armies and lots of people use mini from a variety of companies The main thing to look out for is that all the models are a similar enough scale to middle earth
Brilliant videos, only really played 40k but after marathoning 13 hours of LOTR I saw there is limited edition translucent Dead of Dunharrow dudes on GW website, 2 infantry boxes and a king of the dead later decided to add in the three hunters to be thematic for jumping off a boat, then had to add in a Minas Tirith battlehost for free shipping of course. Cannot wait to get them all painted up and displayed but your videos make me want to find people to play with. Thank you, I have not been this excited on a hobby project since I painted 1000pts of melee nids as bees.

A perfect time for this video, since so many people (including myself) are getting started rn with the release of the battlehosts I personally bought the Mordor battlehost (but I can't get the mounted witch-kings arm to fit properly 😭), and heard that it can also be used for Angmar and Barad Dur, although I'm not sure how I should get started with the other two.
Thanks for the comment. The mordor one is great because it sets you up for all three armies. If you want to play Baradur you need to grab Sauron. The whole army is built around him. For Angmar you could grab a cave troll, dead marsh spectres, and Burdur to have a big army
I got back into the game with the osgiliath set and immediately fell in love with the LL rangers of ithilien. I got myself the mini set with frodo sam and smeagol and currently i am running it on 400 points to get to know them

First, you buy models. Then, you build some of them. Then, you put them away for two years. Then, you rediscover them, build them all, and paint them all in a couple months. Rinse and repeat.

I came to the game from a book and lore enjoyer. And the Allies Mattix doesn't make much sense. Especially the yellow ones. They have options don't make sense and such left out that make sense. Also it completely takes the timeline out which as a book oriented person can be so confusing. But I guess compromises have to be made somewhere.
Interesting perspective, which ones do you think stand out as not making sense? As a huge fan of the lore I think it generally works very well. The ones that make the least sense are the wide amount of allies for fangorn and misty mountains. Which are definitely just a concession for game design.
Sauron as the give of gifts traveled around to many Elven Kingdoms so it's not unreasonable that at some point he would have been with Galadriel. It is obvious that this is in a different form to what we see him as in the rule set for him
Oh, so I can play Rivendel and Mirkwood together, as long as they're led by their own faction leaders? That's sick. Could I play all the wizard heroes together, like Radigast and Gandalf?
Hi, great video! I am struggling to get models here in South Africa, I got the Mordor and Rohan Battlehosts starter boxes. Ordered a Battle for Pelennor fields cause I found one supplier with it in stock. After 3 months, I can confirm they do not. So now I am looking at printing what I cannot find. Where can I find these guys who create these models?
Correct me if am wrong but according to army books and little knowedge what i got so far You can buy battle host like example Isengard make few uruks as Captain that make You set to play by just single box and not need buy heroes pack for start since Cpt is capable to have up to 12 soldiers 🤔
Would you put the 2H flail on the Witch King? I'm new to the game and anytime I hear people talking about him no one mentioned the flail. Is that because it isn't worth the 5pts or is it because its just assumed you're taking it?

As a kid first seeing the goblins of moria, I've always wanting to make a army based in the Goblins of moria fashioned as a hoard pulling cave trolls right behind them as they swarm the enemies deep in halls of Moria.
Im so glad you have so many videos on this game. I bought the box set of the fellowship online because I'm a lotr fan and I miniatures war game fan who wanted to paint the minis and now I'll be able to get use out of them beyond just painting some minis
Thanks for the comment. To play Legolas you have plenty of options! He is in the Fellowship and the Mirkwood armies as well as the Rangers of Mirkwood, Return of the King, Defense of Helms Deep legendary legions. You can also ally him in to almost any other army of the good side! This means pretty much whatever army you want to play he will fit in!
I've been painting up my models and am thinking of merging my Pelennor box with the Minas Tirith Battlehost. Would Theoden leading riders work well with Gandalf leading a shield wall of warriors or are the two armies too different to merge well?
one question about ringwraiths - do they really poses only 1 wound? or is there any other mechanic in play? ( in first edidton i remeber that they Will actualy was theirs wounds)
They only have 1 wound but with fate and a high defence they are survivable. They are also really powerful magic casters rather than front line warriors so usually you avoid throwing them into the fight
Thinking of getting started with MESBG for the new year and your channel is getting me hyped for it! QQ about list building, can you mix troops from the same faction? For example I’m thinking Mordor, can a Mordor orc captain have 4 Morannon orcs and 2 Mordor orcs in the same warband if that makes sense?
Welcome to the game! Its great to get into! A hero can lead any troops from their army list is any combination so you Mordor Orc Captain could lead a few Morrannons, a few regular orcs, a troll, some warg riders, a morgul stalker, ect all in the same warband
so im looking at getting back onto the hobby after a few yesrs doing 40k, how would you guys rate the lothian armoured elves? looking at one lead by Haldir. mix of inf and cav....
Lothlorien elves are great. The guy who won the Ardacon world championship (biggest Middle Earth tournament in the world) used them. This surprised a lot of people as they are usually thought of as a middle strength faction but player skill means infinitely more than their army. He used Celeborn and Galadriel but Haldir is great too. If you want to see them in action there are two recent ballet reports with them on the channel

Those armies are both a great starting point! For the Rohan side you could add in Eomer on horse and some more riders. That would give you a really solid army around 300 points. For Rivendell you could add in the awesome new Elrond model and Rivendell warriors to build out the army. Alternatively you could add in more knights and go full cavalry
I don't have any models yet. I really love the armored troll models. The ones that are labeled mordor/isengard troll as well as the chieftain. If I want to run a list with all of those armored trolls and maybe some cave trolls, is that viable and what faction would I be running with a list like that?
You can take Mordor Trolls and Troll Chieftains (basically a troll captain) in the Mordor and Baradur army lists and you can take cave trolls in the Angmar and Moria army lists. There is a Cave Trolls Hero named Burdur in Angmar as well so he would be a good one to look into. To ally Mordor and Angmar you will need a hero of Valor for each army Burdur could lead the cave trolls in Angmar and the witch king could lead your trolls in Mordor. I would recommend have some troops and a banner bearer around to help you get objectives
Great video! Currently played my first game last month! Only 300 points, but I’m currently building a 600 point harad army so the release of the Haradrim King is perfect this week! One quick question around banners, do I take a banner and a war spear for my haradrim model? The model I have has a banner with a spear tip on the end? Or do I just take the banner and not pay an extra point for the spear do you know? Keep up the great content!
Look into Suladan, he has a 6 inch banner and is amazing for serpent horde. Also, the betrayer runs well with master of poisons rerolling all failed to wounds 6" near him

@@alexcottis3896 It's enough with suladan, regular banners are 25pts for a 3 inch banner while suladans is 6 inches on a 100 point hero of legend which is insane value. It also counts as a banner in scenarios where having one gives points, which is not the case for Aragorn's banner. I would look into shadow wraith's video on the serpent horde to get a feel of every model in the army, he goes into more detail about the betrayer as well.

I think they are both great and it totally comes down to personal preference. I picked up the Battle of Osgiliath to start my Mordor and Gondor armies

If the mount gets killed by shooting, the rider takes damage (sometimes dies, but if not) standing back up on foot

Any advice on a ghost army 2k pts and easterlings those guys are awsome and I got some from the pelannor fields box they just leap out at me
Thanks for the comment. A 2k army is absolutely massive in middle earth most games would not get over 1000 I usually make my armies 750 points and then start on the next one. If you were really keen on 2000 points of ghosts I would have the king of he dead, two heralds of the dead, the three hunters (Legolas, Aragon, Gimli), half a dozen riders of the dead, and as many warriors of the dead as you could get. All upgraded with shields and half with spears.
Easterlings are awesome there are a lot of ways to build an army of them. I would start with the new heros that they have added to the faction. The dragon Emperor, Rutabi, and Borogir after them I would add a horse of troops, a dragon Knight on horse and some Kataphracts

After Osgiliath Starter and command set what would you recommend to buy next for good and evil side? I think of 3 additional boxes for each
A great inclusion would be the Battle Host for each faction!
With the Gondor side if you didn't want to add the Battle Host I would add in some Gondor knights and then some citadel guard or fountain court guard. Because Gondor comes with 3 heroes in the box the command set isn't as nessesary for them but the banner is always a good inclusion
For Mordor you have a great army with the starter and the commanders. You definitely don't need to add much but a great beast of Gorgoroth is always a fun inclusion. I would add in some Morgul Knights for some heavy cavalry as well

I wanted to start a Army for MESBG for a long time. (played Age of SIgmar for some years, but as it's like for the most of the people, LotR is the place where the Heart lies).
So, my Question is, what is the best way to Start an Army with a Mumakil?
I know, it's one of this question where expierenced palyers think "man, there are better ways to start", but i absolutly love the Model and it's a Dream since my Childhood to Paint one (one of my Classmates had one, back when he came out)
So what are the best ways to build an Army with a Mumakil? Maybe someone can help me?
ps: is the Mumakil War Leader from ForgeWorld a good option to consider? (because for Style reasons he is^^)
Hell yeah this is not how I would recomend starting but its going to be awesome hahaha.
With a Mumak army I like to use all cavalry for the models who aren't riding the mumak. I would pick up the mumak, Suladan, and two boxes of Haradrim raiders. This will give you a solid 750 point army that will take a lot of learning but is very powerful when you figure it out. I won a 650 point tournament with a similar list several years ago.
The mumak warleader from Forgeworld is a great choice. He is a lot more expensive in points than a regular mumak but is a lot stronger.

So i'm going for the haradrim Raiders. Is there the same rule as for the Rohan Riders, where i need a Foot-Model for every Cavalry-Model because the horses could die?
@@kevinharkam8010 Your horse can die but it doesn't happen all that often for my 12 raiders that I had in my army I only had 3-4 dismounts and that was enough

I’ve been learning how to play for about a month or so now. My friend and I had a 650 point game earlier tonight. My Isengard vs his Vanquishers of the Necromancer. 40 models vs 4. And he absolutely destroyed me 😂 I’ve never played a game where that is a thing that can happen.
Hahaha yeah the Vanquishers are really good at killing stuff. They fall down as soon as they need to take an objective though
The only thing I would add to this advice is to never leave home without a Banner if your faction has access to them. They are always worth the points without exception and learning to position them effectively is a skill every player needs to learn

I'm not familiar with that company but there are lots of alternative miniatures out there. Lots of people 3D print aspects of their armies and lots of people use mini from a variety of companies
The main thing to look out for is that all the models are a similar enough scale to middle earth
Brilliant videos, only really played 40k but after marathoning 13 hours of LOTR I saw there is limited edition translucent Dead of Dunharrow dudes on GW website, 2 infantry boxes and a king of the dead later decided to add in the three hunters to be thematic for jumping off a boat, then had to add in a Minas Tirith battlehost for free shipping of course. Cannot wait to get them all painted up and displayed but your videos make me want to find people to play with. Thank you, I have not been this excited on a hobby project since I painted 1000pts of melee nids as bees.

I personally bought the Mordor battlehost (but I can't get the mounted witch-kings arm to fit properly 😭), and heard that it can also be used for Angmar and Barad Dur, although I'm not sure how I should get started with the other two.
Thanks for the comment. The mordor one is great because it sets you up for all three armies. If you want to play Baradur you need to grab Sauron. The whole army is built around him. For Angmar you could grab a cave troll, dead marsh spectres, and Burdur to have a big army

First, you buy models. Then, you build some of them. Then, you put them away for two years. Then, you rediscover them, build them all, and paint them all in a couple months. Rinse and repeat.

I came to the game from a book and lore enjoyer. And the Allies Mattix doesn't make much sense. Especially the yellow ones. They have options don't make sense and such left out that make sense.
Also it completely takes the timeline out which as a book oriented person can be so confusing.
But I guess compromises have to be made somewhere.
Interesting perspective, which ones do you think stand out as not making sense? As a huge fan of the lore I think it generally works very well.
The ones that make the least sense are the wide amount of allies for fangorn and misty mountains. Which are definitely just a concession for game design.

Sauron as the give of gifts traveled around to many Elven Kingdoms so it's not unreasonable that at some point he would have been with Galadriel.
It is obvious that this is in a different form to what we see him as in the rule set for him

Ordered a Battle for Pelennor fields cause I found one supplier with it in stock. After 3 months, I can confirm they do not. So now I am looking at printing what I cannot find. As a kid first seeing the goblins of moria, I've always wanting to make a army based in the Goblins of moria fashioned as a hoard pulling cave trolls right behind them as they swarm the enemies deep in halls of Moria.
Im so glad you have so many videos on this game. I bought the box set of the fellowship online because I'm a lotr fan and I miniatures war game fan who wanted to paint the minis and now I'll be able to get use out of them beyond just painting some minis

Thanks for the comment. To play Legolas you have plenty of options! He is in the Fellowship and the Mirkwood armies as well as the Rangers of Mirkwood, Return of the King, Defense of Helms Deep legendary legions. You can also ally him in to almost any other army of the good side! This means pretty much whatever army you want to play he will fit in!

I've been painting up my models and am thinking of merging my Pelennor box with the Minas Tirith Battlehost. Would Theoden leading riders work well with Gandalf leading a shield wall of warriors or are the two armies too different to merge well?
This is a really solid army it's going to work really well. It's be a decently sized army so it'll get you straight into the action
one question about ringwraiths - do they really poses only 1 wound? or is there any other mechanic in play? ( in first edidton i remeber that they Will actualy was theirs wounds)
They only have 1 wound but with fate and a high defence they are survivable. They are also really powerful magic casters rather than front line warriors so usually you avoid throwing them into the fight

Thinking of getting started with MESBG for the new year and your channel is getting me hyped for it! QQ about list building, can you mix troops from the same faction? For example I’m thinking Mordor, can a Mordor orc captain have 4 Morannon orcs and 2 Mordor orcs in the same warband if that makes sense?

A hero can lead any troops from their army list is any combination so you Mordor Orc Captain could lead a few Morrannons, a few regular orcs, a troll, some warg riders, a morgul stalker, ect all in the same warband

Lothlorien elves are great. The guy who won the Ardacon world championship (biggest Middle Earth tournament in the world) used them. This surprised a lot of people as they are usually thought of as a middle strength faction but player skill means infinitely more than their army.
He used Celeborn and Galadriel but Haldir is great too. If you want to see them in action there are two recent ballet reports with them on the channel

Those armies are both a great starting point!
For the Rohan side you could add in Eomer on horse and some more riders. That would give you a really solid army around 300 points.
For Rivendell you could add in the awesome new Elrond model and Rivendell warriors to build out the army. Alternatively you could add in more knights and go full cavalry

I don't have any models yet. I really love the armored troll models. The ones that are labeled mordor/isengard troll as well as the chieftain. If I want to run a list with all of those armored trolls and maybe some cave trolls, is that viable and what faction would I be running with a list like that?
You can take Mordor Trolls and Troll Chieftains (basically a troll captain) in the Mordor and Baradur army lists and you can take cave trolls in the Angmar and Moria army lists.
There is a Cave Trolls Hero named Burdur in Angmar as well so he would be a good one to look into.
To ally Mordor and Angmar you will need a hero of Valor for each army Burdur could lead the cave trolls in Angmar and the witch king could lead your trolls in Mordor.
I would recommend have some troops and a banner bearer around to help you get objectives

One quick question around banners, do I take a banner and a war spear for my haradrim model? The model I have has a banner with a spear tip on the end? Or do I just take the banner and not pay an extra point for the spear do you know?

Look into Suladan, he has a 6 inch banner and is amazing for serpent horde. Also, the betrayer runs well with master of poisons rerolling all failed to wounds 6" near him

@@alexcottis3896 It's enough with suladan, regular banners are 25pts for a 3 inch banner while suladans is 6 inches on a 100 point hero of legend which is insane value. It also counts as a banner in scenarios where having one gives points, which is not the case for Aragorn's banner. I would look into shadow wraith's video on the serpent horde to get a feel of every model in the army, he goes into more detail about the betrayer as well.
