Modern Talking is like the Wilhelm Scream of EDM. It isn't used very often, but when it is, it's kind of like a "challenge" to see what artist uses it the best.
Why the heck are you telling someone to shoot himself? Not only is that SO morally wrong, but it's pure EVIL. So, don't get your mouth dirty by saying something like that to a KID who is just trying to express his emotions online with a little swag joke to it. (Trust me, I hate the word swag too, but that is NO excuse to tell someone to kill himself in one of the most violent ways of today!!!)
Thank you so much jAyMaC you've seriously helped me out. This was an amazing tutorial, and I'm so happy that I know how to make automated growls now. Keep making these epic tuts! Thank you man! :D
HOLY SHIT !!! THAT FUCKING BASS DUDE ! Following you now on Soundcloud !! If all the other tracks are like the drop you showed in the beginning, I'll definitely listen to every single track you made !!
Yes to Mark Glenn... can you do a tutorial just on mapping EQ Modulation to Massive Macros? Tried searching online & DavidRck's tuts aren't too clear. Great tight sounding music!
To all of you guys that use a different DAW and are complaining that it's not possible to make this sound: I'm 12 years old, and I remade this sound in FL Studio.
Hey so I'm using Logic X, and I don't know of any way to map multiple eq parameters into one control like you're doing here. This "vowel" automation a great idea but way too tedious to do from my position. Does anyone know any 3rd party eq plugins that can help for Logic X? Or maybe even how to do this with Logic's stock tools?
Hey jAyMaC, I just want to say I love your tutorials. The sounds you make are pretty much always spot on to the actual sound from the song. You make the best tutorials, man. :D
I process all my samples a lot to get that sound you hear, but the kick is from Vengeance Essential House 1, the snare is from Prime Loops Studio Collection 1 (FREE), and the hats are from a DannyBryd DnB loop I chopped to extract the hats only, no kick :)
10-11 how do you modulate the secondary patch? is that the same growl? or an fm8 patch? what chord is the whole tune in? best tut on growl bass ive seen period. thanx for the knowledge bro.
great tut man. Subscribed! Question: I see that you use both Fl studio and Live. What do you prefer? Whats more powerful. Im very familiar with FL and im hesitant to move to a new DAW. Is it worth it? Is live really that much better? I know people say a DAW is a DAW, but i would like your personal opinion. Thx
3 days later and I finally got it! Right at 4:03, I paused the video, copied the screen, and used that to figure out mapping. A lot of start and stop, but done! Now I just need to tweak out the timber I think, as mine sounds a little muddy compared to yours. But thanks again!
SpaceBar Official If you want to email me at frankbiganski at gmail dot com I'll send my step-by-step instructions... may take a few days for me to get back to you, due to the turkey day holiday here in the USA.
Would Sytrus or FM8 work better in FL? Also i noticed you are using Ableton a lot more. What is better Fl or Ableton? I know its personal preference but whats the difference and how does it do when producing music
It's all a matter of perspective. I don't think it sounds particularly fake; the mathematics of it are sound enough XP Kill The Noise has a much more organic sound because that's exactly how he wants it to sound. In much the same way, I've created this exactly the way I wanted it to sound. I also have a philosophy; I like not to limit myself to using NI Massive, but to try other methods of synthesis. EQ morphing is just one way of accentuating formant overtones, as is Massive's Double Notch :)
Adapt.Q stands for Adaptive Q (Resonance), which increases the resonance of the filter peak depending on the gain level, similar to the way analog filters work. I didn't want this; I wanted to be able to set a resonance and leave it, so I turned it off :3
Rewire... But ableton disables plug ins when running as a rewire slave, so he couldnt use massive/ He can use fruity parametric eq 2 and automate the HZ selection knob to get this same effect. I find attaching it to the Fruity XY controller and making an automation clip works well for controlling the frequency shift.
You are good at singing to say that was done on the spot! Nice work!!! Got my brilliant skrillex bassline. But I Changed The Way It Sounded A Bit! Nice Though!
Setting the modulation range is much more difficult. Ableton Live allows the range to be set in the same scale used by the plugin, but FL Studio requires you to specify values as a percentage, or a decimal value. Unless you love math, converting a number between a 20-20000 Hz scale to a value between 0 and 1 becomes tedious when you have to do it all the time. Live allows me to just type the absolute value instead of doing the conversion; it's much faster and easier.
holy shit dude I'm a 13 year old trying to learn how to produce dub step with Ableton, how did you become so good, how did you learn, what vst's should i get. much appreciated, garth ward
dude you are fucking dope. your videos inspire the hell outta me to get better. i have learned a lot from you. and your music is dope too. im adding you on souncloud. keep up the good work bro.
First, Your tutorial is brilliant ! Thank you ! 2nd, The only thing i got problems with is how you mapped those Eq's to move together .. In my case i am a Cubase user, Do you maybe know any kind of Eq which i can map together into 1 knob as you did ? (To be able to actually move 4 different elements in the EQ with only one knob, exactly how u did) Is there any controller maybe that you can send the parameters to ? Like Fruity Formula Controller but for other Daws ... ? Thank you again buddy !
First, you need Ableton Live 9 or greater. If you have that, just position your cursor over an existing automation line, hold down Alt, and drag up or down on the line to curve it :)
I saw some of your tutorials and I think they are AWESOME. Keep doing them! I wanted you to recommend me mastering tutorials, I d appreciate it. Thank you,
You can use the FL Env Controller to set this up so that it happens on key press. It's better if you use the Layer module to link the two so you can program the melody in there and have it happen in sync.
So this is the infamously complex ableton. Can you spell komplicated? I can't. i could listen to you say compressor all day. I'm pretty sure what ever skrillex did was less complicated but your dedication to quality is fuckin dope
I'm asking more for the platform aspect of that synth (on the bottom channel) like is it massive mad or another vst, and like maybe which waveform or tones used to form the basic elements of that pad, they are my weak point in production, and it is rare to find tutorials on those sounds.
Alright thank you so much! I've had Live 9 Suite for a little over a month and had no idea you could put curves in your automation. Thank you! And this is by far the best growl bass tutorial I've seen. I definitely learned a lot in this tutorial. :) And feel free to check out my music when you get the chance! I will have a pure dubstep song coming out real soon, and it will have this bass in it. Thanks again! Dron3
Hi at 2:34 you say you learnt this from a guy called david rck. I can't find him anywhere on youtube, could you possibly tell me where his videos are? Gracias.
Yeah, you'll need to use 2 X-Y controllers, one for each EQ, and sum all X-Y controller knobs to one single knob, either using another X-Y, or a Fruity Formula Controller... maybe inside patcher if you're brave enough XD I can never get things working inside patcher :/
Did anyone else have trouble with setting EQ Eight number 2? I have the range perfectly set to MIN 90Hz, MAX 800Hz, and the macro knob still makes the Frequency travel the entire way up and down. Ableton Bug?...
for some reason I can't insert massive into an effect rack. I've tried it with audio and midi racks and it just won't let me drop it into either of them
You need to start with really high quality samples. Also, side-chaining everything to the snare drum is very effective at getting it to pop through the mix. Also, a transient designer plugin can help get that initial crack to come through, There's a great video of Noisia in the studio working on drums - one of the cool techniques they use is to cut the first 30 ms or so (however long the transient sounds great at) off a snare hit - and then warp/distort/eq the rest of the sample.
Hey, how do you bend the automation you did for the growl in the track view? I noticed it seems to be bent in spots, rather than straight. How did you do that?
Everyone hates modern talking but IT'S THE MOST USEFUL WAVEFORM IN MASSIVE.
It really is though.
Carbon, Chrome and Strontium are all useful also. Not one wavetable is the best, that's not how it works.
Modern Talking is like the Wilhelm Scream of EDM. It isn't used very often, but when it is, it's kind of like a "challenge" to see what artist uses it the best.
Michael64099 I like this guy :B
And this guy likes jAyMaC ;D
I have a hunch you were looking for an excuse to show off your amazing singing voice.
***** 13,whatever.

BEST tutorials on production I love your work mate.
Very nice, I'm going to use just the EQ+distortion parts as a rack and put it over some layered electro basses and see how she plays...
Holy FUCK you can sing well. Damn.
what about the leads and chords. those sound sweet
Yes to Mark Glenn... can you do a tutorial just on mapping EQ Modulation to Massive Macros? Tried searching online & DavidRck's tuts aren't too clear. Great tight sounding music!
amazing job man! Thank you! Also, who is the other guy you mentioned who is "great with eq", and has youtube tutorials? you are the man!
To all of you guys that use a different DAW and are complaining that it's not possible to make this sound: I'm 12 years old, and I remade this sound in FL Studio.
Hard flex
WAAAAY better than the original. Great job jAyMac!
wow best tutorial ever, best audio teacher. thank you jaymac!

Awesome tutorials. I love how you explain everything so that it is applicable to general sound design, and not just this particular synth. Big ups!!!
10-11 how do you modulate the secondary patch? is that the same growl? or an fm8 patch? what chord is the whole tune in? best tut on growl bass ive seen period. thanx for the knowledge bro.
Awesome tutorial mate. Thanks a lot. Just wondering how you made the leads? They sound awesome.
Your actually sounds much better. And thank you man you've taught me a lot.
great tut man. Subscribed! Question: I see that you use both Fl studio and Live. What do you prefer? Whats more powerful. Im very familiar with FL and im hesitant to move to a new DAW. Is it worth it? Is live really that much better?

hey jaymac would it be possible for you to make a tutorial on that synth 00:15 ? it's so freakin cool :3
Beautiful singing :D
Could you do a tutorial on the 2nd bass in the drop at 0:09?
Dude. WOW!!! When i get the time I will learn this Patch!!! Thank you! You really have it down
It's all a matter of perspective. I don't think it sounds particularly fake; the mathematics of it are sound enough XP

EQ Mod 2:48
are you also going to make a tutorial of the melodies?
i like them really!!!
yeah, I would love to see how you did your drums as well! They are phenomenal!
you definitely got the formant sound down with some FM synthesis it will probably sound just like it, love the tutorial!
Adapt.Q stands for Adaptive Q (Resonance), which increases the resonance of the filter peak depending on the gain level, similar to the way analog filters work. I didn't want this; I wanted to be able to set a resonance and leave it, so I turned it off :3
jAyMaC can you upload the project file for this project? btw i love your work:3

i think i'm more in love with the drums in this tutor. sounding punchy n tight, would love to see how you did it :) just a thougt
Are you using the channel EQ or one of the other apple EQs?
I think it is amazing how you know FL Studio and Ableton Live fluently!
Pancakes taste good, don't they?
I would recommend getting NI Massive of course. And other plugins you can find like Nexus2 and stuff. Hope this helps. :D
You are good at singing to say that was done on the spot! Nice work!!! Got my brilliant skrillex bassline. But I Changed The Way It Sounded A Bit! Nice Though!

holy shit dude I'm a 13 year old trying to learn how to produce dub step with Ableton, how did you become so good, how did you learn, what vst's should i get.
much appreciated, garth ward

Ok i found them :D but how did you get the growl modern talking next to massive to use the EQs?? :o
Thanks for the tutorial and letting me know about turmoil...it's awesome
Man, you are awesome, this tutorial helped me a lot, thanks!
What's this about the timbre macro within Massive?
You can use the FL Env Controller to set this up so that it happens on key press. It's better if you use the Layer module to link the two so you can program the melody in there and have it happen in sync.
Project File!
will it be possible to do a Fl Tutorial?
that one really mechanical sounding synth in the song is just insane
any idea how to get something similar?
So this is the infamously complex ableton. Can you spell komplicated? I can't. i could listen to you say compressor all day. I'm pretty sure what ever skrillex did was less complicated but your dedication to quality is fuckin dope
Great tutorial. It sounds awesome!
Do you have any idea how I can automate the two eqs with one knob in FL Studio (e.g. Fruity X-Y Controller)? Thanks
can you do a tutorial on the supersaw? God that sounds amazing
dude i always return to listen to the first 40 secs of this vid! is there any chance u can finish this song?
Hey is there any tutorial for the 0:14-0:16 part. It sounds so amazing.
O_O jaymac, you're a good singer!
Please a Tut. for the soft synth between the growls !!!!!
Hey jAMaC. Would it be possible for you to make a tutorial on that synth between the growls as Alan already said?

How does one go about mapping in FL Studio so that we can control everything with one knob / automation clip. Thanks
you are a gentleman and a scholar
Did anyone else have trouble with setting EQ Eight number 2? I have the range perfectly set to MIN 90Hz, MAX 800Hz, and the macro knob still makes the Frequency travel the entire way up and down. Ableton Bug?...
