I've had a number of people inquire about using the CPL with a solid ND (at the same time). The answer is a bit complicated and needs further testing, but here it goes. First, yes. The CPL can magnetically attach to the front of a solid ND when mounted. The two filters then rotate 360 degrees together, no problem. Works surprisingly well, especially because the CPL isn't threaded and is thinner than a normal circular CPL. Second, I tested the CPL with a solid ND and a magnetic 77-82mm MAVEN step-up ring (the green ones I mentioned in the review). I had to use one because my 14-35mm (widest lens I own) has a 77mm thread. All three rings were surprisingly thin, and seemed to perform quite well together. I saw little if any additional vignette wide angle at 16mm full frame. Now, where this gets complicated is that I don't know whether my good results were because the 82mm filters were larger than the 77mm diameter lens, so the edges simply couldn't be seen. To truly test this I'd need a 16mm full frame lens with an 82mm thread, which I don't have. That's the main reason why I didn't address this in the review, for I felt it could be confusing and/or misleading. If anyone reading this has tested this, please feel free to share your findings!
Well, I ordered the full set, couldn't resist. You had me at 'color coded'. I have a 16mm with a 82mm filter size- I should have the answer in a few months...
Ah, ignore my comment. I get what you did now. Yes, that is the same as the Kase. The reason you didn't get much vignetting was because you are using 82mm filters on a 77mm lens. The Kase set I ended up with were 95mm and that doesn't vignette on my 14-30 which is 82mm but the 82mm ones do vignette on the 82mm 14-30. You pretty much answered the question there. Thanks!

Currently looking into a magnetic filter system. When I enquired with case, they recommend a size up to whatever size filter thread you have as this removes all vignetting when the magnetic filters are stacked 👍🏻
I like the different colours - being long sighted and trying to pick the correct Kase filter by trying to read the filter thread can be frustrating at times!
Todd, were the edges of the filter itself visible at 14 like they are on the Kase filters? I bought the Kase 82mm mag filters and on my Nikon 14-30, the filter itself was literally slightly visible. Not just a little vignetting but very dark. Is that a similar situation on these? I saw your reasoning for not mentioning the 14mm part but it seems like you should have covered that as well. Thanks!
I hear ya Thomas. If I can get my hands on a smaller filter (so I don’t need the adapter) I’ll test it again on my 14-35. For me it works fine because the camera corrects the big distortion of that lens, so the extra vignette is removed. Would love to hear feedback from others like yourself using different ultra wide lenses.
I received my set of filters last week from the Kickstarter campaign, and absolutely love them. Would recommend getting the lens cap which makes switching filter and cap between filters super easy. Quality is top notch too.
I may have missed it, but why not test the vignette at 14MM (the widest view of your lens) instead of at 16MM? Would that not have been a better, more relevant test? Love the color coding of these filters and the neutrality seems pretty impressive.
Hey Mylan - I did test this at 14 and 15mm, but cut it from the review for a couple of reasons. One, 16mm full frame is a standard that most filter manufacturers recommend as the widest supported focal length, so I wanted to make the test useful when comparing other filters. Second, the lens I was using (Canon RF 14-35) has strong digital distortion correction at 14 and 15mm. That correction crops some of the edges and corners, and the images aren't really usable without correction, so...to say there was "little-to-no vignette" at 14/15mm might only be true with that particular lens (which it was - I saw only a little more vignette at 14mm). Hope that explains it!
MAVEN sent them to me (the green ones towards the end of the video). They're going to be offered as add-ons. Check their Kickstarter page for more info. Concerning Freewell...not sure! Freewell makes great filters too, so I assume they'd also perform well.
Good to know that this doesn’t add any color cast. I tried the Kase filters and there was a slight magenta shift in my images. Not sure if this was because I was stacking a CPL with an ND, but there was a color cast nonetheless.
Yes you can stack them! That said, the longer the stack, the greater the mechanical vignetting on very wide angle lenses (just the physics of extending a lens barrel)
Yes you can, but DO NOT use the stack for pointing directly at the sun (Eclipse, etc). You need a solar filter for that so you do not melt your equipment
Great review. Would you advise a step up ring approach from 77 to 82mm for wide angle lenses? eg. RF 14-35. This lens vignettes out of the box! Not sure the step up ring may help instead of just plonking 77's on the front? (esp. ND + Pol

Why did you test for vignette on a 14-35mm lens, and set it to 16mm fo the test? Seems like you wanted to tell us it won't vignette, when at 14mm it probably does a lot more than it did at 16mm.

Thanks Todd, nice review. One element I wish you (and others) would test in addition to colour neutrality is sharpness. Using a similar comparison against a control image, does a filter being slapped in the front of a lens have any impact on image sharpness at 1:1 ?
I've just backed Michael's project. I've been a fan for a few years and trust him. I backed the 82mm size but will get a few step-up rings for my smaller lenses (77mm, 72, and 67). I don't have any 82mm at the current time, but my decision to go with the larger size in to future proof the filter in the event I someday win the lottery and get a Canon RF 24-70, then I'll have all the bases covered.
In the comments I’ve read several questions/concerns about vignetting. In post processing this is a one click step to remove vignetting. In my experience it works great and I don’t notice any image quality issues. So why is it such a concern them? I honestly ask because I’m thinking maybe Im missing something. Thanks!

I wish they had a complete set. As a filmmaker, you need all of them. Like 0.3, 0.6,0.9, 1.2, you know what I mean. The idea is to quickly swap them, right?
You could, but don't have to. More economical to buy one set at the largest size you need (eg, 82mm) then buy additional magnetized step-up rings (from Maven) for smaller diameter lenses. Those are the green ring mounts I mention towards the end of the video.
I see one problem with these: The last one attached (top of stack) will show up in reflections. A black ring around the lens is less disturbing in reflections than a gold or blue ring!

As Michael said, you can. The CPL turns fine mounted to the ND. The stack is actually thin enough when shooting wide angle, though how wide you can go w/o vignette will depend on your lens and camera.
Hey Todd, great video as always! Question - I have a similar magnetic system and EF glass, both 77mm and 82mm. With the 77mm to 82mm step up rings I'm unable to use the lens hood. Any work arounds you're familiar with before I look at Michael's lens system?
Hi Dave - just tested this. The lens hood of my Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 (82mm thread) mounts fine when the magnetic filters are attached using the 82mm adapter ring. The lens hood of my Canon 14-35mm f/4 (77mm thread) does NOT mount with the 77-82mm magnetized adapter ring (ring is a little too big for the hood to slide over). Hope that helps!

I currently have a set of Kase magnetic filters which I really like for the most part. Several things I would suggest for Maven. Make the magnets stronger. Bump the Kase filters just a little and off they come. Even just sitting in my bag. Also, if you have a filter on a lens with a lens cap and want to remove the cap it pulls the filter with it. That's annoying as hell. I also don't understand why you would put felt inside the lens cap. It's a total dust magnet and transfers that dust to the lens and then you have to clean it every time. Not really feasible if a fleeting shot pops up. If Maven can figure out the magnet issue I'd be all over ordering them.

It's not uncommon to have an ND and a CPL on top. First- I assume that's possible? Second- how's the vignetting down at 16 mm or so when stacked? Third- Any chance the lens hood fits over the filters? I had some of the Manfrotto 82 mm magnetic adapters that screwed onto existing filters and the usual lens adapter rings. All that added enough thickness (lens adapter + filter adapter + ND filter + filter adapter + CPL filter) that down below 24~28 mm or so it would vignette badly, so I gave up.
Don't like the colors, my camera looks sexy black. There has to be another way to distinguish the filters easily. Also, is the sharpness affected in any way? Are variable NDs available?
Hah - I hear you. If you want color coding but more minimal, check out the Kase Wolverine magnetized filters. Very similar to these but with a thin band of color. I haven’t seen any issues with sharpness, and no there isn’t a variable ND.
Thats a great idea if that felt lens cap is actually 18% grey. A missed opportunity if its not cos its always handy to kill 2 birds with one stone when travelling
Would be good to know if Maven acknowledges the warm shift of the x6 and if they are going to correct it. After all a key point of Maven's sales pitch is a lack of visable color shift.
Hi There- yes I’ve acknowledged it already. These are pre-production prototypes, however it still might be within Tier 1 standards, I’ll have to get it back from Todd to test it. In the event it isn’t, for a paying customer, we would replace it. That’s why the lifetime guarantee is so important. @@michaelandrew5209 I would be worried if Maven thought the x6 was still at tier 1 standard. It is obviously warmer so that is contrary to their Kickstarter mission statement ie "Tier 1 Color: No Visible Color Shift, No Color Correction Necessary". Otherwise looks like a great product with the potential to be the best out there.
$450 of a 72mm starter kit with two filters that are essentially useless for my photo purposes? Seems steep and not a good value. At $250 through the Kickstarter, that would be reasonable, but not at their normal price. Individual filters are $99 for that size, and adapters and caps are all in the $25-30 range so you need to sped a lot of money to get filters going on more than a single lens.
If you want to demo color cast, or if you want to compare a tonal value in vignette, use a screen shot of the Photoshop color picker's RGB values or the Lightroom cursor and RGB readout. Measure the color or value, take advantage of the easily available precision. You could even stick 3-4 numbered color targets across any vignette to describe the transition. This is especially worthwhile considering people watching this have monitors with a variety of color space presentation.
Yep - true. I've done that in other reviews here on my channel, but didn't share that in this one for the sake of time. Point well taken about color spaces and not relying on the end user's monitor.

Yep. I often wear prescription sunglasses in the field which screw up my near vision, so the colors are great.

The way around stacking mechanical vignette is to buy 95mm filters or larger units that utilize a holder, but it will cost you.

Also the notches on the edges of the filters correspond to which filter you have.
Correct! Each notch is 1 stop of light filtration.
No comments about the CPL for vignette, colour cast and effectiveness as a polarizer???

@@dpulte Hi Dave, shooting into the sun does not need A CPL; Remember you get the effect when mostly at 90 degrees with the sun/e.g. side light

All that added enough thickness (lens adapter + filter adapter + ND filter + filter adapter + CPL filter) that down below 24~28 mm or so it would vignette badly, so I gave up.

Don't like the colors, my camera looks sexy black. There has to be another way to distinguish the filters easily. Also, is the sharpness affected in any way? Are variable NDs available?
Hah - I hear you. If you want color coding but more minimal, check out the Kase Wolverine magnetized filters. Very similar to these but with a thin band of color. I haven’t seen any issues with sharpness, and no there isn’t a variable ND.
Thats a great idea if that felt lens cap is actually 18% grey. A missed opportunity if its not cos its always handy to kill 2 birds with one stone when travelling
Yep. I didn’t test it with a meter, but it looks pretty darn close. Good enough if nothing else is avail!
Would be good to know if Maven acknowledges the warm shift of the x6 and if they are going to correct it.
After all a key point of Maven's sales pitch is a lack of visable color shift.
Hi There- yes I’ve acknowledged it already. These are pre-production prototypes, however it still might be within Tier 1 standards, I’ll have to get it back from Todd to test it. In the event it isn’t, for a paying customer, we would replace it. That’s why the lifetime guarantee is so important. I don’t know of another Filter Company willing to do this based on color performance. best wishes! Michael
@@michaelandrew5209 I would be worried if Maven thought the x6 was still at tier 1 standard. It is obviously warmer so that is contrary to their Kickstarter mission statement ie "Tier 1 Color: No Visible Color Shift, No Color Correction Necessary".
Otherwise looks like a great product with the potential to be the best out there.

$450 of a 72mm starter kit with two filters that are essentially useless for my photo purposes? Seems steep and not a good value.
At $250 through the Kickstarter, that would be reasonable, but not at their normal price.
Individual filters are $99 for that size, and adapters and caps are all in the $25-30 range so you need to sped a lot of money to get filters going on more than a single lens.
If you want to demo color cast, or if you want to compare a tonal value in vignette, use a screen shot of the Photoshop color picker's RGB values or the Lightroom cursor and RGB readout. Measure the color or value, take advantage of the easily available precision. You could even stick 3-4 numbered color targets across any vignette to describe the transition. This is especially worthwhile considering people watching this have monitors with a variety of color space presentation.
No I did not. And fwiw - we use a similar methodology when testing and manufacturing the filters. It’s the only way to go! Thanks

Yep - true. I've done that in other reviews here on my channel, but didn't share that in this one for the sake of time. Point well taken about color spaces and not relying on the end user's monitor.
