Khan-Tuvan Dyggvi, according to Omeljan Pritsak, was the name of a Khazar khagan of the mid 830s. He led a rebellion of the Kabars against the Khagan Bek. As this rebellion took place roughly contemporaneously with the conversion of the Khazars to Judaism, Pritsak and others have speculated that the rebellion had a religious aspect. Omeljan Pritsak speculated that a Khazar khagan named Khan-Tuvan Dyggvi, exiled after losing a civil war, settled with his followers in the Norse-Slavic settlement of Rostov, married into the local Scandinavian nobility, and fathered the dynasty of the Rus' khagans. Nevertheless, the possible Khazar connection to early Rus' monarchs is supported by the use of a stylized trident tamga, or seal, by later Rus' rulers such as Sviatoslav I of Kiev; similar tamgas are found in ruins that are definitively Khazar in origin.
Making an argument from silence, we may assume that the Khazars were the first permanent tribute-taking polity in the area. Kiev, which two centuries later was to become a key centre of a Rus' state formation, was founded by the Khazars as an outpost. When, in the ninth century, Vikings from the North appeared and formed the first polity centred on this area, it was the Khazars against whom they had to compete. Archaeological findings document a Scan- dinavian presence from the middle of the seventh century. By the beginning of the ninth century, they were residents (Noonan 1986: 339). By 839, we know from the Annals of St. Bertin that they had established a polity known as the Rus' Khaganate. To quote the leading Khazar scholar, Peter Golden, As for the Rus' qaghanate, we know nothing concrete about its origins. Both Pritsak and the writer of these lines concluded that there must have been some marital connection between the Khazar qaghanal line and the Rus rulers. Pritsak suggested that the founder of the line was a Khazar Qaghan who fled the Kabar (Qabar) revolt in the 830's and 'found refuge in the Rus' factory (trading post) dominating the vital Volga-Donets route from the region near Iaroslavl'-Rostov. I also argued for a blood tie because anything less, in steppe Eurasia (the most important audience for such imperial pre- tentions), would have been meaningless. (Golden 2001: 32)

One thing about the red-black flag and its highly problematic association with the Ukrainian Insurgent Army or UPA is that after UPA ditched the Nazis and started fighting against literally everyone, they were also fighting against the Polish partisans from the Home Army or AK and committing brutal massacres of local ethnic Poles in western Ukraine, especially the Volhynia region. This is all extremely nasty and complicated stuff, as there arguably were legitimate grievances that Ukrainians had against Poles (that in no way justified UPA's actions). Some Polish partisan units engaged in revenge-killing of Ukrainian civilians (on much smaller scale, and without the approval of the AK command), and after the war, the Soviet-controlled Polish communist government committed the "Operation Vistula", which was an ethnic cleansing of Ukrainians from the south-eastern corner of modern Poland. At the same time, there were cases of reluctant cooperation between Polish anti-Communist partisans (mostly formef AK members) and UPA, despite that they were most viciously fighting each other just before that. So yeah, there is a lot of ugly historical drama between Polish and Ukrainian peoples, and despite what you said in the main video, it's much more recent than the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and we haven't worked it out completely yet. But I think it makes current Polish-Ukrainian cooperation even more remarkable and gives me hope for the future.
I wouldn't call it ethnic cleansing but it was a necessity to move Ukrainians to other parts of Poland due to the Ukrainians still massacring Poles even after the borders were established. It was an action of self-defense by the Polish people living in the regions where Ukrainans had remained after the border changes.
@@allyson87 Ethnic cleansing is probably the wrong word. The Ukrainians and other Ruthenian minorities were moved to other parts of Poland, especially to the northern and western parts, to the so called regain territories (which Stalin took from Germany and gave to Poland). Since Ukrainian groups were still terrorising (murdering) Poles in the southeastern parts of Poland, it was a good solution to the problem. It was self defense.
@@Rickeeey1 You said what you said. You can edit your comment all you want, but your explanation isn't helping either. Maybe look up the definition of "ethnic cleansing", mass relocation is explicitly included. Every time a country does it, they must first come up with a way to try to justify it to themselves and others; ethnic cleansing isn't something people just randomly do. The "justification" always involves somehow framing it as "self defense", but it never is. Another ethnicity existing is not an actual threat.

well easiest answer would be - Rurikids used the tamgas to mark their things and cattle like Khazars did. Then they started using them as seals, each branch of family and separate prince used his own personal variation. Then it transformed into coat of arms. Basically it means "owned by Rurikid dynasty". But now applied to whole country, ahah.
I know you've already made a Finland episode but if you make a Scandinavian/Nordic Episode I'd be very happy if you include Finland :DD (and in that case Iceland as well)
Awesome video as always, Barbs! One relevant question I have is why do some people use "the" before Ukraine? Like "I am from The Ukraine" or "Let's talk about about The Ukraine"? People don't say "I'm from The Russia" or "The France" but people do say "The USA" so I can relate.
"the Ukraine" was used alot in the past to refer to the place as a region of RE and USSR mainly. It became symbolic that after independence ppl would say just "Ukraine" i guess thats the history
You can and even SHOULD include Crimea in the territory/demographics etc of Ukraine. It is legally demanded to include Crimea into the map of Ukraine b/c it belongs to the territory of Ukraine internationally recognized ☝️
You can recognise this flag in the city Narva, country Estonia. But it is upside down and in reality they are just similar, anyway, many russian tourists are confusing between flags.
See Barbs why you need to keep the Fan/Flag Days! There are some nutters that love flags, so you wouldn't get to showcase all this cool stuff you get from us anywhere else. Loved this episode.
Slavs have such an expression as " slava, glory, thank God" (it's about like Muslims Allahu Akbar) if you're Ukrainian, then you're a troll of Russians I can understand you =) and if you are a dude from another country from this, then you look very strange (to glorify the political border of a foreign country) "do you like someone else's family that bolle publicly"😅
It's actually Volodymyr the Great, not Vladimir Apart from that, well done! The sky and wheatfield(sometimes sunflower field) also may be interperted as symbols of freedom for Ukrainians as well
@@alexj9603 the romanization of that would be Volodiměr. It makes sense to use OES versions of the names of the kings of Kyivan Rus, as its people were not Belarusian, Ukrainian, or Russian at that time.
The blue-yellow flag means blue skies and yellow fields of wheat (It mainly stands for prosperity and sustainability). The trident is an old Slavonic symbol denoting the mythical falcon (This is already more according to Slavic mythology) also, if you get used to it, you can see the word "WILL" on the coat of arms of Ukraine, denoting "freedom". I also do not advise you to confuse the Russians and Ukrainians, Ukrainians are Rusyns who have lived on these lands since the time of the Slavic resettlement, and the Russians are essentially closer to the Finno-Ugric peoples.
A bit of history. Peter 1, from the hands of Metropolitan Prokopovich, stole the title "Rus" and announced that Muscovy became the empire "Russia", although the title was given to the ancient family of Danilo of Galicia and after the Principality of Lithuania-Ruskom (After known as the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth or also as the Kingdom of Poland, Russia and Lithuania). After Catherine 2 came to the throne of Russia, she undertook to rewrite the history of Moscow because she did not like that the so-called "Great Empire of Russia" was for a long time a vassal of the Mongol Horde and after the Golden Horde. So they came up with the legend of Alexander Nevsky, although in fact he was the most devoted servant of the Khan.
Readers. Keep in mind, everything he wrote is pseudo-historical distortions and hardly has anything to do with the truth. Everything he said is broken by the study of modern historical, linguistic and genetic studies.*

Yes please make a Scandinavia episode, I would love that as a filler week topic, overall, those are great

interesting fact. if the blue-yellow flag gets soaked with blood, it will turn to red-black. This year we have seen this in practice.
To me, if it turns red and black, that means you're ignorant morons. Greetings from Poland

Man. Such a cool flag. A trident ready to skewer evil.

"Прапор червоно-чорний це наше знамено
Червоний це кохання, а чорний - пекла дно"
(The red-black flag is our banner, The red stands for love, and the black for the bottom of hell)
Also the red stands for the blood of those who fight for the freedom
Hey Barbs,
I’m a huge fan of this channel. Thanks for putting out excellent videos again and again. I am sure you guys work really hard to make it happen. I hope you keep doing great, world exploring content for a very long time. You have a great cast too! Shout out to Keith, Noah, Hannah and the rest.

@@Rickeeey1 dude, did you seriously just excuse "ethnic cleansing"? wtf?!
@@allyson87 "Another ethnicity existing is not an actual threat." Tell that to the Ukrainians who celebrate the people who murdered 200k Poles.

Actually the red and black Ukrainian flag goes back at least several centuries. Both red/black and blue/yellow flags were used by the Zaporozhian Cossacks. You can even see them both in the famous Repin's Reply of the Zaporozhian Cossacks painting.

I found one small detail in the Ukraine episode - when Noah was talking about the Antonov AN 225 "Mriya" the picture shows an Antonov AN 124 (just 4 engines instead of the six of the true AN 225).
Nevertheless, the possible Khazar connection to early Rus' monarchs is supported by the use of a stylized trident tamga, or seal, by later Rus' rulers such as Sviatoslav I of Kiev; similar tamgas are found in ruins that are definitively Khazar in origin.
well easiest answer would be - Rurikids used the tamgas to mark their things and cattle like Khazars did. Then they started using them as seals, each branch of family and separate prince used his own personal variation. Then it transformed into coat of arms. Basically it means "owned by Rurikid dynasty". But now applied to whole country, ahah.

It became symbolic that after independence ppl would say just "Ukraine"
i guess thats the history
About USA. USA consists of States, that's why you should write The USA.

Slava Ukraina 🇺🇦 from 🇪🇸
Slavs have such an expression as " slava, glory, thank God" (it's about like Muslims Allahu Akbar) if you're Ukrainian, then you're a troll of Russians I can understand you =) and if you are a dude from another country from this, then you look very strange (to glorify the political border of a foreign country) "do you like someone else's family that bolle publicly"😅
It's actually Volodymyr the Great, not Vladimir
Apart from that, well done! The sky and wheatfield(sometimes sunflower field) also may be interperted as symbols of freedom for Ukrainians as well
Both Vladimir in Russian and Volodymyr in Ukrainian
Actually it was Володимѣръ (Volodimier) in the Old East Slavic language of his time.
