That taxi driver was so honest and felt compelled to warn him about the terrible dangers in that area. But he didn't take him seriously. Most ppl could care less if you're wondering around a bad area as a foreigner. I've traveled dozens of times throughout south America, only once someone sort of warned me that I was in a bad area. I did take it seriously and got out of the area immediately.

Dude I'm from Ecuador and you really have no idea how lucky you are to had come down from Cerro Santa Ana without any problem, seriously. They kill, not only rob people just for $20 or your cellphone. As a matter of fact, if you haven't had film this I wouldn't have any idea how that place is. That's why everyone was so worried about you and they were telling you to hide your camera.
Be careful dude it is not worth to risk your life like that and it's not an exaggeration.

My dad's English, mother Peruvian. As a kid I remember him disappearing for hours on walks round the dusty neighborhoods in the backwaters of where her family lived. My relatives would all be panicking and worrying that he'd been robbed or kidnapped, but he always showed up with a story about a nice encounter and a beer with some local he'd had. People like Kurt says are more willing to help you than hurt you in this world, we forget that

Nah man, it’s dangerous I know a couple people / locals who’ve been victims in Guayaquil. One got mugged at gunpoint while walking to their apartment, and then a taxi driver who tried to jump a female passenger, and a organized robbery from someone walking out from the bank. Does it happen all the time no, but is there high risk of theft and crime, absolutely yes.

I can't decide whether it's brave or stupid to wander down some of these streets that Kurt does. I do know that Kurt has a big heart. From helping out the old man at the end to the Haitian family a couple vids back, he always finds a way to pay it forward. Good on you, Kurt! Subscribed!
To be honest, it’s just plain stupid. There’s a certain kind of arrogance in what he did. It’s fine to wander around poor districts in Cairo or Shanghai etc, but to wander around similar districts in South America is utterly stupid. The murder rate in dozens of these barrios is HUGE- the highest in the entire world. And they will happily shoot you for your camera or bag. Poverty levels are so awful that a thief will stab you or shoot you for $10. The majority of people are decent and honest, but the risk is still massive. And yet he ignored the advice. Eventually this guy will find himself in a deadly situation just because he wants to make “cool” content. A blonde westerner in a South American slum is asking for trouble.

I am from Guayaquil when you cross the river you went outside Guayaquil to another city (Durán) I was scared for you because the neigboorhood in Durán was very isolated.. also in Cerro del Carmen, but trust me there are far more dangerous hoods, it was nice to see Cerro del Carmen always wanted to see how it's like. I'm glad you were ok. Coconut juice is so delicious i like it over coconut water. The plantain in the chuzo wasn't hard because it was ripe plantain it's mushier and sweet. Thanks for visiting my city.

Kurt, that gentleman at the end comes from provincia “Chimborazo”(The part that was inaudible). It is a region in the center of Ecuador in the sierras surrounded by beautiful volcano & mountain ranges. Most iconic “el taita” or Chimborazo which is a 6000 meter volcano with thousands of years of native history. Beautiful paisaje and even better gente. If you have some time to visit, you should! Would be a great opportunity to share the native culture and hear some Quechua spoken.

Most of the public can reach the 2nd refuge from a small hike. From there a guide is needed and at least 7 days of acclimation. If anyone is interested feel free to comment and I can get you in touch with some talented Montañistas to guide to the top. Not for the faint of heart as the hike can be dangerous.
