You just saved me so much money. My wipers stopped on a super rainy day I got stranded for a while. Had to leave my car and Uber hour and a half home. I was so stressed. Don’t have a ton of money to get a diagnosis AND another thing fixed on my car. Found this vid, did everything step by step. Except my wiper bars did NOT wanna come off. Had to find a separate vid for that. But once I did. I found I had the same problem I was able to pop the arm back on til I pick up the full transmission tomorrow. But this is the biggest lifesaver. Thank you!! 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
As a woman thank you for this video, because my husband thought it was "just a fuse" when I took everything apart myself and seen that this was the issue🙂
7 years on nd my sister's 2013 Chevy Trax has wiper issues...Not the same as this 'veeeehickle' but just watching 'The GOAT' of mechanicktrickery has enlightened myself intosome very basic stuff regards disassembly regards these machines. I don't believe there is a better teacher on 'TheTubes" than Eric O... Thank you once again Eric..
The "distinctive click" is a satisfying sound...I didn't hear it while changing the wiper motor on my 94 Camaro back in the day (hey I thought I was cool) and after putting everything back together and turned them on, it slipped right out of the assembly! I was so frustrated that while taking off the arms again, I use a wrench to pry them up and cracked the windshield since it went down lower than I thought...definitely a distinctive clicking sound when you crack your windshield.
Excellent video! It took me 2 hours to do the repair, including a trip to O'Reilly's. Total cost was $15, for a box of 5 bushings, and two push locks-I broke the same one you did. Keep up the great work!
I just had to do this to my equinox. Mine was the connecting arm between the wipers. It just popped off because of ice build up. And yes i repaired it myself :) Thanks Eric
Thanks Eric! I have two Equinoxs in the family. If I have the same problem. Your video will save me hours on trying to figure out how to get to the darn thing.
Not weak at all. It is the first video that I came across that is exactly the same problem that I am dealing with. Most of the time I get half the info I need and have to fight the other half. Thank you very much for this one.
@14:17 I think this is the first SMA video I've seen to have the advert play at just the right moment when he says "We'll pick up on this when the part shows up". At least it did in my browser.
Thank you so much for this!!! I just saved a bunch of money I don’t even have lol. I took all the parts off and just popped it back in. Works perfectly
That happened on my F150 and Autozone had the little plastic bushings that you could replace in the arm and pop it back on. It's been another 150,000 miles and they are still working.
Thank You for creating this video. Today, my Mothers 2012 Equinox with 42,000 miles had the link break off on the wipers during a heavy rainstorm here in Ohio. I was pissed that Chevy would not repair this at their cost, since this is a safety issue. I have made the repair myself vs. $520 from the dealer.
+FordTechMakuloco My last car had the plastic button drilled through and a penny washer welded to the male part of the mechanism to capture the arm. Tons of slop but you can't argue with results!
Eric you can find those big clips on Amazon. I have had several Equinox a part . On the old ones the cabin filter is under all that plastic stuff. Great Vid. as always !!
That part went on my son,s car I drilled a hole through the plastic cap into the shaft then put a washer and self taper screw in to hold every thing ; 4yrs still working !!!
I have rarely seen the long arm wear out, so I take them from scrap transmissions, cut and weld them to make short arms for myself. Works great and lots of scrap transmissions around.
Going through a rough time ATM and as soon as I head "There's your problem lady" I was smiling :P every time you say that I burst out laughing :) Thanks for the videos.
on older cars or if the customer doesn't want to spend a lot of money, I drill the plastic socket and metal ball most of the way through and tap a hole, then bolt the two together with a small gap between the moving parts which stops the arm falling off. works a charm.
The best way I've found to remove those christmas tree fasteners is a pair of trim clip pliers from steck manufacturing and a shop rag to protect the paint. As a chevy tech, I've done a couple dozen of these(there's a recall on some model years).
When I worked at Advance they had those clips on the wiper transmission on the help rack. They were universal, so you couldn't look it up by vehicle, but you could try to match them up.
Thanks for the video, just had this issue with my 2015 Chevy equinox. The part was $150 with the moter at O'Reilly . Was able to watch your video and fix it . Thanks 💜 😊
Thanks for posting this. Having same issue I knew it was a simple but because of all the casing to get to it... I was hesitant to Crack it open. Thankanfor giving price of part too and where it can be found!!!
In watching your older vs your new videos I really like the new way you do videos now. Like your content and wish you were in Georgia where I live. Cheers.
I fixed the same problem on my Pontiac G6. You can get the little plastic retainers aftermarket from Dorman. Look up Dorman Part number 49447 (Bought mine from Amazon). It's been working great for 2 years, even in the heavy snow and ice we get here in Canada.
I figured the linkage was the problem right from the start. The 7th gen Malibu also suffers from this same problem. GM makes their wiper systems so darn cheap now. I remember you could move a few feet of snow off the windshield with the wipers, now you have a little snow on the wipers and it ends up breaking them. What happens is those rubber connectors just get worn and stretched and then they just pop off, and it's more prone to it with age which makes it even more susceptible to damage without even much of a load on it.
Rumor has it that if that is all she had go wrong on that thing she is very lucky. There is tons of hate on these equinoxes on the net. I just test drove one today and everything about it was impressive except anything to do with the engine. My wore out +2,000 lb '93 Suburban with 327,000 miles on it could run circles around that Equinox. Yeah the old 350 in the burb might burn a little oil but she still purrs like a kitten.
Even the easy jobs can be a learning experiance. It helps to see the different fasteners and clip arrangements so that the next time I'm under the hood I can relate what I've seen here. I can't help but notice that when I first found your channel you were at around 13,000 subs. Now look at you, awesome.
remember, the wiper transmission was not linked to the wipers. So Eric was able to just pull the wipers to wipe the glass. Therefore nothing was holding the wipers in the "parked" position, and could easily be below the "parked" position.
+MTTech good point . Eric is 2.5 hours from me . I wanna move near his shop so he could work on my 03 silverado. Honest mechanics are hard to find around me. he goes above and beyond .. he fixes someone elses cars better than his own . And hes got a hot wife that can mount tires too LOL
Drill a hole through where it broke on both sides and put a bolt with a plastic bushing around it and a little grease with a lock nut? Might be worth the effort for a DIYer vs 130 or 140 bucks. Loved the video regardless!
that plastic retainer clip looks like the gear shift lever bushing for the 4-speed shifter lever that kept breaking on our 79 plymouth horizon then stuck in whatever gear trans was in.
Reminds me of my moms early 2000s Saturn. After about 10 years the wipers stopped working because the wiper transmission assembly rusted up at the joints. Soaked it in a tub of WD-40 over night, working it back and forth occasionally, and it was back it business. Had to do that again a few years later.
I thought buying a new one was way to much for me. So I went to the junk yard and found another broken one. Cut the good nylon bushings off carefully. So I ended up with a dome side and a side that looked like a washer. Put the two halves together on my wiper transition and glued them. It has been working for about 5 years.
I had a similar thing happen to a Pontiac minivan I had. My fell apart just as I was getting off the turnpike and had to fix it on the side of the road in a heavy downpour just so that I could continue on my travels. BTW ... they do make replacement plastic bushings for the arms now too. It is hard to get them into the holes on the arms, had to use a pair of pliers to get them into the holes, but then they just pushed onto the little pins real easily.
Eric, old installers trick, when you are trying to use a Panel popper to remove the plastic rivets but don't want to pry against the paint, take a plastic water bottle or an old 2 liter soda bottle, cut it out and make yourself some paint protectors then you can pry outward without marring the paint :)
+Mike F The clips that hold my rear bumper on are epoxied in there after someone ran into me and took my bumper off. I'd wager a decent epoxy well done is stronger than the original plastic.
+Mike F My "personal fix" would be to quick-set JB Weld both old bushings- snap linkage back in place, wait 1 hour. The grease would keep the epoxy from adhering to the link ball. Better than new.
If it was my own vehicle I would rig something up just to avoid spending bucks on another junk part that will fail in another 5 years. 5 years for a wiper linkage...that is truly ridiculous. That system should be lifetime maintenance-free...like 20 years at least! Just proves that new plastic cars are just disposable junk haha
+motoYam82 Ivan thats called Economy !! I am going for Durability, my cars are 19, 14, and 8 years old. My kids drive cars aged 18, 14, 12. The makes are Renault, Avantime, Fiat Panda(8), Mitsubishi and Volvo. Just ordinairy maintenance.

There is a perfect fix for this that costs about $10 and it's not the plastic dorman clips or the $150 new transmission. Go onto amazon and look up "universal metal windscreen wiper linkage repair clip" tried to leave a link but couldn't. These clips will last longer than the rest of the arm.
Here is some that will fit some cars. MAY NOT FIT ALL. www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=windscreen+wiper+linkage+repair+clip
I had this exact same problem happen to me about 10 years ago on an Accord during a cross country trip. Luckily Honda sold the Arms individually popped a new one on. Wipers again!
Thank you for this video! It helped me big time fixing the wipers on my wife's car. We tried to get bushings at Oriley's, the guys even tried to put some on, but what they had did not fit. I had to get this done on a Saturday night for my wife the next day, and could not have done it so quick without your help. Thanks again!!!
Since you have established an open communication line with Dorman, maybe you can suggest they make those plastic bushings that break and cant be purchased separately. I certainly could have used them several times.
I like the snow tyre man. My last car had the same issue, a new one was 1/2 the price of the car so I drilled right through the ball and put a washer and split pin on, worked ok for another couple of years, allthough it was a bit clunky. They make a tool for sitting and extracting those ball joint doofers.
I have a 2015 equinox and just received a recall for the wipers. i have to make a special appointment at the chevy garage to have the recall done. So far I havent had a problem with them. Nothing will happen until I'm in the middle of a rainstorm out in the middle of nowhere. I suspect they will try the wipers, maybe have a look at them and pronounce them a-ok, and send me on my merry little way.
I may be mistaken, but the recall is to be performed on every vehicle. The inspection period was only while the recall was under investigation by the nhtsa because of an update in production
The back rear wiper 3.(2006 Pontiac Torrent) seized up on me after I replaced the old crusty wiper blade. I need to figure out the issue or just remove it completely. Great informative vid.
I doubt you read comments on three year old videos but you could wrap your pastic rivet tool handle with electrical tape to help keep from damaging the paint. they also make a plier style that would work for that application.

The wiper motor/transmission problem is prevalent with the Chevy Equinox - I have owned two and the wipers stopped working in both vehicles in inclement weather. This is a problem GM desperately needs to fix because someone is bound to die or be severly hurt in an automobile accident because of the Equinox windshield wiper problem.
Well now I see how old this is but thanks for video just had exact problem with 2015. Tore all apart called dealership for part its a recall issue so got new one installed for free. But now I know how and hopefully never need to use the knowledge
I think my local Poop Boys had those plastic retainers in the Help isle for my old Plymouth years ago, I probably still have a few laying around in the bottom of a toolbox somewhere.
A good instructional video for the DIYer. Somebody needs to invent a universal plastic fastener, maybe like a rivet, but something that would expand to fit all holes. Then just cut away the factory fasteners and insert these when done.
Hey Eric I know I'm a little late with the info but I stock those plastic bushings at O'REILLY'S auto parts they are made by your favorite company Dorman .
i've had two cases where Equinoxes came in with wipers not functioning, one was a fried underhood fusebox and the other was water intrusion in the body control module.
I was able to replace the one link on my wife's Acura when the same problem happened. She learned her lesson about pushing ice buildup on the windshield with the wiper arms. I was waiting for the brake parts cleaner when you cleaned the wiper motor stud but was let down :-(
This is very common on the Terrains and Equinox models. Personally have done a few on Terrains, mainly happens when a customer uses wipers with too much snow on the windshield. And those christmas tree clips do suck and most always break lol. Also with lining up the wipers, where the wipers park in the black section there are small little dots are the end of where the wiper sits and you are suppose to line it up with them. They're pesky to find though and easier to just line them up the way you did.
By reference to the start of filming, you set both wiper blades up from their factory settings. The effect will be that both blades get caught more by the wind flowing backwards over the bonnet ("hood" for Americans) when in "park" position. This can be rather annoying for the driver and passengers, as there will be rather more wind noise than they are used to.
Rod Palm That is quality. My 96 Lancer(Mirage) wagon wich is scrapped now had troubles with the wipers 2days before the engine said thanks for all. Had a long crack in the block. Sadly the fuel tank was leaking and more to fix bit some parts of it still lives. But nice that your impala is living
Thanks for the awesome video! Dealer wanted $350 for the repair on my 2012 Equinox. Only the 2013 is under GM recall currently. I bought the entire ACDelco 84241847 GM Original Equipment Windshield Wiper System Module that included the motor for $67 from Amazon. Original GM part and exact fit, just plug and play no messing around with the press fit connection. Did have a bit of trouble removing the wiper arms but should have had them lifted up to relieve the spring tension when pulling off. Otherwise no issues, just needed to run the wipers to set up the correct wiper position before locking down.
great video, thoroughly explained, my father in laws wipers stopped working one winter snowy day, all y ucan do is pull over and wait for it to pass, uhg #damnroadsalt griiff
If you were an advanced DIY'er with the time you could probably make a new clip for the linkage out of some UHMW polythene. Turn it down to the right size on a lathe and epoxy it together and clamp it up for 24hrs. Its actually not to bad to do for a chevy. At least you don't have to pull the engine to replace the wiper assembly.
You just saved me so much money. My wipers stopped on a super rainy day I got stranded for a while. Had to leave my car and Uber hour and a half home. I was so stressed.
"that means, chevrolet" I died laughing.
'The Heart Break of America'
Man you saved me some time! I'm just gonna order the transmission part. Subscribed!
The back rear wiper 3.(2006 Pontiac Torrent) seized up on me after I replaced the old crusty wiper blade. I need to figure out the issue or just remove it completely. Great informative vid.
Best explanation video I've seen on this. Thank you.
I doubt you read comments on three year old videos but you could wrap your pastic rivet tool handle with electrical tape to help keep from damaging the paint. they also make a plier style that would work for that application.
Thanks for the video. Auto zone had the bushing. Fixed it for $8.
You are the wiper man THANKS FRIEND
WHATCHA LOOKIN FOR ?YA ALREADY KNOW IT HAS TO COME APART EITHER WAY,LOL BEEN WATCHING YA FOR A WHILE ,IVE EVEN REFERED YOU TO SOME OF MY SHADE TREE FRIENDS ,IVE BEEN TURNIBG WRENCHES FOR 52 YRS SINCE I WAS 8 YRS OLD UP ON THE REZZ,I HUNG OUT WITH THE CLUTCH ARTIST BACK IN THE 60's in bflo,ny I GUESS SHOP IS IN MY VEINS I WISH WE HAD THE AVALABILITY OF PARTS BACK THEN,,I ENJOY YOUR HONESTY,&THE NOTION TO SAVE THE COSTUMER $$$,I ALMOST OPENED A GARAGE IN AVOCA,NY YEARS AGO I WATCH YOUR VIDS NOT TO FIX THINGS BUT BECAUSE I FEEL AT HOME HANGING OUT IN YOUR SHOP,NOW IM NOT SURE IF IT WAS SAVONA OR AVOCA I HAD MY EYE ON,
The wiper motor/transmission problem is prevalent with the Chevy Equinox - I have owned two and the wipers stopped working in both vehicles in inclement weather. This is a problem GM desperately needs to fix because someone is bound to die or be severly hurt in an automobile accident because of the Equinox windshield wiper problem.
Just happened to me during a downpour and i had to pull over thank goodness I was close to home
y’all know there is a recall
Your videos are great. Don't listen to the haters.
I was waiting for the brake parts cleaner when you cleaned the wiper motor stud but was let down :-(
Thank you again for a very informative video just ran into the same exact issue with the linkage very very helpful !!!!!
Great video man definitely appreciated
This is very common on the Terrains and Equinox models. Personally have done a few on Terrains, mainly happens when a customer uses wipers with too much snow on the windshield. And those christmas tree clips do suck and most always break lol.
Also with lining up the wipers, where the wipers park in the black section there are small little dots are the end of where the wiper sits and you are suppose to line it up with them. They're pesky to find though and easier to just line them up the way you did.
Nice rainy day job.
You can buy the bushing for $4 on amazon. Dont need to replace the whole piece.
our favorite company dorman actually sells an assortment of wiper bushings
Lovin the intro, Dr O!
I have drilled into the center of the ball socket and used a self taper in a pinch.
Design flaw IMO. The wiper linkage in my 65 Chevelle still going strong.
NICE!
I 3d printed a new bushing for mine, so the fix took a couple hours of my time to do the design, then about 5 cents of plastic
Excellent step by step guide! Fixed it!
This jusr happened to me 😑 How much should I expect to pay fo this if I take it somewhere?
Eric you need to make a SMA shirt that says "Mitsuba that means Chevy"!
+Coopers_dad Eric needs to make SMA shirts period. And sell them to his viewers. HINT.
great video, thoroughly explained, my father in laws wipers stopped working one winter snowy day, all y ucan do is pull over and wait for it to pass, uhg
