Urban Sketching: It's EASY when you SIMPLIFY - tips and tricks to break down complex scenes

- Thanks for tuning in to watch my urban sketching, ink and watercolour tutorial! Don't forget to check out my channel where I have hundreds of different urban sketch tutorials, as well as other watercolour and ink sketching guides for everyone from beginners to more advanced!
If you'd like to support my channel you can buy me a 'Coffee' on KoFi - ko-fi.com/tobyurbansketch
When I reach my goal I'll upgrade my sketching tutorials with a new camera and use my old camera to give an extra view point in my videos! Perhaps my face, perhaps my watercolour palette, or some close ups of my process!
Today we are urban sketching a characterful and complex street view in St Neots.l, my home town. But however complex the view there are ALWAYS tips and tricks we can use to simplify our scene and create something wonderful that really captures our imagination.
And that is what today is all about. A tutorial guide to show you that Urban Sketching with ink pen and watercolour really is that easy!
I will talk you through, step by step, how I set the scale of this imagine and use simple comparative measurements to make life easier for us. The sketching is all about using big shapes to set the scene, and suggesting details rather than trying to sketch every last window perfectly.
If you check out the chapters you'll get a flavour of the kinds of tips, tricks and hacks throughout this whole tutorial. Alternatively join me for the whole sketch as we relax and have a bit of fun sketching the day away.
As ever, the focus of today's tutorial is simplicity, accepting errors and embracing the random moments that give us happy little accidents and real beauty in our image.
In addition, I am trying out a 'fude pen' - a wonderful textured pen with a flexible nib, but still capable of acting mostly like a fine liner. The best of both worlds? You decide!

It looks better than the picture😄😄🤗
Haha thanks
I wonder if one could set up scale and perspective by using the first little part in the distance, and then sketching just an outline of the closest things of interest, on the left and right of the page, then, tie it together with the shapes and intersections from near to far, or vice versa, to get a continuity of scale and perspective, something that has "broken" a few things that I have tried... Maybe I'll experiment with that...back to you!
I love this approach and I'm eager to give it a try. Thank you!
Thanks Christine, I hope you enjoy experimenting!
This is so amazing! You gave that unassuming street so much character through your sketch! Loved all the tips! Thank you so much 🙏
You're so welcome!
So, if I get it, it looks like you start with something that sets scale and maybe also sets the horizon/vanishing point? It's strange that a simple idea like setting the scale with the first marks, "sets the stage" for the rest, but this had not occurred to me !! Nice one!
Awesome 👍😎
Thank you for this video!
No worries!!!
Another great tutorial. Thanks.
My pleasure!
Brilliant as always! I’m always inspired to sketch as soon as I’ve finished watching your videos! Thank you 😊
Thanks Jo, kind words ☺️
@@TobySketchLoose can I just ask whether you use hot pressed, cold pressed or rough paper? Thank you 😊
@@TobySketchLoose just thought I’d mention that the large pencil case you put a link to on the video where you talked about your sketching kit doesn’t fit an a5 sketchbook in. The measurements on Amazon indicate that there should be plenty of room but when I received it my a5 moleskin wouldn’t fit in… the idea behind it was perfect just not the size which is a shame! I’ll keep searching! Take care 😊🙏🏼
I love all your work & your videos. I’m into abstract watercolor art, and was wondering if you could give some tips and tricks on this topic. Once again thank you for the wonderful videos and information you share here on this platform.
Ahhh thank you, lovely to hear. I can certainly have a think about doing something abstract, thank you for the idea!
This was very helpful
I'm very pleaseto hear that 😊
I actually have this pen but haven't used it for sketching with watercolor since it is water based I thought it would run? Didn't seem to in your video so I plan to try it out myself! Also fun fact fude means brush (writing/painting) in Japanese!
I use waterproof ink 🔏 otherwise it would run, and thanks for the top tip 👍
Have to agree with Blake, background music is very irritating but love your work.
haha I agree too - sorry about that! I've made changes to how I add music for future videos - there may be a couple coming out with irritating music still, which I won't be able to re-edit, but mostly (I hope) it will be fixed!
I hear you mention fude pen, I checked your products but can’t see it. I thought fude pens were like a fountain pen, which has a different nib. I’d like to find out about the pen your using as Im Fairly new to urban sketching I’m still learning, finding your videos much easier to follow thanks so much for this, I’m overcoming my fear of this style now. ❤
Hi Lynne, sorry it's not in my list anymore, I've not kept it super up to date!
Fude pens (proper ones) are indeed essentially bent fountain pens. The pen I was using for this is, instead, a soft tip marker which allows you to achieve similar effects. I have a fude fountain pen, but find these markers a little easier to use - they are made by tombow and called 'fudensoke' pens.
@@TobySketchLoose thanks Toby I have found them on eBay and ordered two, I just spotted the name when you moved the pen, I thought they might be easier than a fountain pen too.😃
I loved the free sketching but cannot yet come to terms with the random colouring. Perhaps it will grow on me
It doesn't have to grow on you, let yourself enjoy what you enjoy 😊
I cannot seem to find the link to the fude pen.

Try this link - or search tombow fudenosuke - sorry, I forgot to add it to my lists!
@@TobySketchLoose Thanks
By about 12-13 minutes, the music was driving me crazy...it seems to have very strong left/right stereo effects, and, when watching this on my phone, in 'landscape mode' the music really jumps around... amazing stereo from the phone, but really adds to the mental 'workload' while trying to hear and see all of the important bits .. sorry to be a whiner, but I like what you are doing, so don't want to 'switch off' because of the music... maybe I'll try CC...
You might notice that others share your opinion and this is a very old video. I no longer use music 🎶🎶 ☺️
@@TobySketchLoose ah, so ... thanks for your understanding ;-)
The music is distracting. Can you take it off?
Hi Stefania - totally agree! I can't, sadly, take it off this video as I've deleted the original footage. But I've changed the music I use on my future videos.
Really interesting video and demo, but find the background music competes with your voice over. Makes it pretty close to unwatchable. Would rather hear your narration and explanations of what you are doing!
Thanks Noreen - you are not wrong for sure. I don't use music anymore you'll be pleased to hear :)
Great video but too damn long
Ahhh sorry Anand!
I can forgive you lol
Would like to have stayed with the entire video, but the background music and whistling are fruly unbearable. Sorry.
Thanks for the feedback Blake - always appreciated. What do you mean by whistling? is that part of the music or is it an audio problem I didn't notice?
@@TobySketchLoose Toby, the whistling was part of the the music. I'm sorry, I found it very distracting. I much prefer to hear what you have to say. Keep up the good work.
@@blakelarson7954 Thanks Blake :) really useful to know
