Thanks! A list like this really needs to be posted in the description in all of these. (Oh, and BTW, you made a small mistake at no 19 - 28:22 The Fool)

Totally didn't copy n paste that other dudes comment
Well considering that Max's comment here is older, I wouldn't say so :/
Oooohhhh burn!
There's also a list already in the description but ok support the ever growing laziness of mankind.
Predictions before watching:
1. Birdman
2. Whiplash
3. Grand Budapest
4. Some foreign movie I haven't heard of
5. Gone Girl
Those are all on there lol. I disagree with Gone Girl being on the list. That movie was excruciatingly boring and unengaging with all unlikeable and uninteresting characters. Birdman was awesome.
i may have not engaged you, but it is a masterclass of hwo to craft a movie in terms of visual narrative and directing
+Murcia doxial I don't generally judge films on that level. Fight Club is a million times better. Gone Girl was a pointless, over-hyped poece if crap mindf*ck film. Fight Club did that category of film in a fun and interesting way.
KrazyKat well sadly, the way a movie is defined as good involves directing, acting, editing, script, production and structure, you cant jsut ignore that regardless of your lack of entertainment... either way, fight club is far more fun than gone girl, you surely are right on that
Gone Girl was way too long and it failed to grip me. I never cared about any of the characters I was really just frustrated.
Shitdamn, an hour long YMS video, a new Half in the Bag, and both a Nier and a Jojo episode from SBFP? What a day.
My thoughts exactly.
you like everything I also like.
i thought i was the only one that watched sbfp.......
Salvatration Halex YMS x SBFP is like Punisher x Archie
Andd..... numbah one. Supah mario brothers 2 babyyy
It's a mastahpeeace
Looks like my spaghetti and meatballs are leaking.
For the 13th year in a row
still the king
Hey guys its me, Videogamedunkey
Wow Adam! 2014's list is over one hour!
Can't wait for 2016's list to be 5 minutes...
can't agree more. This year has been such a bore.
Except for Green Room, The VVitch, The Lobster and maybe Sing Street, there just hasn't been much that would fit the YMS standard.
I don't even know if Green Room fits his standard. He hasn't seen it, and while I loved it, there was something about it that made me feel like "there's something I must be missing. Something that if I thought about it, it would make this movie seem less great." I could see him giving that movie a 6, but it may just be me misjudging what he likes. After all, I'm not him, and I shouldn't really judge a movie for him. Still would recommend it to him, though. Don't post any spoilers in case he reads this comment thread.
+David Jenny we still got half a year, hopefully things will pick up
that creepy Iguana True! 2013 was a great year for movies, but it did have a really shitty first half.
The ping noise of that bat from the Raid 2 is oddly satisfying...
Holy shit, an hour and 17 minutes - this is exactly what I need right now!
*Halo theme intensifies*
whatre u doin here. what a nice surprise.
shut up indeimaus
Just blitz through this video. ALWAYS look forward to them. My 'to-watch' list has grown SO much. Can't wait for 2015!
Holy shit I didn't know you were a fan of his.
AHHHHH heyyyy yayy ilysm
Gahd get out of here!
HOLD ONTO YOUR FUCKING SEATS BECAUSE YOU'RE IN FOR AN HOUR OF ADAM JOHNSTONS SILKY SMOOTH VOICE JESUS CHRIST
NOT TO SAY THAT I DIDN'T LOVE IT
😁 damn i swear i was thinking the same thing when ur comment showed up.. i died.
Your "untangling" of Enemy is actually how I found your channel AND why I subbed. Also how I came to understand/like the movie more; great to see it on the list. So thanks for that and rock on! :)
They're not drunk in Leviathan, they're just speaking Russian.
As a Russian I can confirm we always sound drunk.
+Katya M. Well now we know this film is 100% legit.
ur hot Katya
Thank you, random citizen!
Katya M. welcome stranger!
is this Frank Oceans new album?
Silly child, boys don't cry is nothing but a myth, passed down for generations.
I pray you get all the fame and fortune you deserve. proud of you xoxo
i wish
I wish
Here from the future to tell you, the new album was actually released and now it's five years old, and considered a classic
This is probably the third or fourth time I've fully watched this list. There are maybe 5 movies you name which I didn't know about previously but since this video was posted, I've sought out and viewed, my favourite being Enemy. You're easily my favourite UA-camr and I definitely appreciate what you do! A lot of my friends also watch your videos religiously. Keep up the great work because I know my Patreon contributions are 100% worth it.
I'm so glad you put Whiplash so high on the list, it's my favourite movie.
But he said it was in no particular order.. So higher on the list doesn't mean better than the other movies..
Zeruda Densetsu I have bad memory.
+Zeruda Densetsu um no. It is in an order.
Zeruda Densetsu I think when he said "In no particular order" he was referring to the guilty pleasures. I could be wrong though.
+Brooke Jones o sorry I thought the entire list, my bad.

Hope this helps people like me, that are suposed to be studying but decide to copy movie titles from IMDb and then look for the timing in the video to help Adam.
Greetings from Argentina. Bye.
No one ever told you but you definitely helped
Ask and you shall receive: I wouldn't've found out about James Randi if it weren't for this video, I've gone through a ton of things he's done now. Very fascinating man and I thank you for recommending his documentary!
Thanks again, Adam!
Happy to see a few my favorite movies in this list.
Was hoping to see Neil Breen's in one of your guilty pleasures but Faithful Findings was in 2013.
Will check out the rest of it.
And will buy your t-shirt!
I think for adum, guilty pleasures != so bad its good.
whoa... ultraman playing a les paul. noice lol
I'm guitarded.
Your videos have so much EFFORT put into them. i feel like you are the kind of person who feels the need to create quality for the sake of purity of point. These year-recap lists feel like genuine praise and recommendation, and they make me excited to watch movies. I feel that the best film related content on UA-cam is YMS and Welcome to the Basement. You deserve support and recognition!!!
I'm very surprised that you watched "The Fool" and "Leviathan". I'm from Russia and our movies are not really talked about outside our country. The director of "The Fool" is a really talented guy and i suggest you to watch other movies from him if subtitles for them exist.
I remember seeing the poster for Leviathan in Rome, and was stunned by it. The image alone intrigued me
Zvyagintsev is the best director right now. I watch his movies since I saw The Return which to this day remain my top 3 movie of all time.
Loveless is the only one that I wouldn't call a masterpiece and it still is a very good film (there's one scene that is absolutely masterful: when the boy overhears his parents arguing).
I made all my fiends watch The Return btw and it always provokes a lot of debate.
Is this replacing Half in the Bag?
Hardrodon Hash!
if only those hacks would make best of the year
Are these new chairs?
+NSA Commander So... Will things be the same, or different?
Hack fraud con man.
whenever I need a new movie to watch, I always rewatch one of YMS's yearly """top 10s""" They've never failed me
Becca A yearly is a bit often mate
Da Pumaface she was referring to the fact that he does one list per year
Plus they’re like an hour long so it’s almost a movie in itself.
they have failed me unfortunately
@@strikersquirrel7365 how so
"Artistic YTP the Movie" is the most inspirational thing I've ever heard.
I'm re-watching this top 10 list video again and I just want to say that without you, I would never have discovered Norte: The End of History. Interestingly enough that film actually came from the Philippines, my country, and it never really had a wide release or attention in the mainstream media. I hope you know how much your videos mean to me because it teaches me a lot and enables me to discover underrated fascinating film.
I actually really love that you have a top ten list with 29 (debatably 32) separate entries XD
Dude these lists are fantastic. They're long but good enough to keep me watching, almost like a movie in themselves.
Don't know where else to say this but I just wanted to express my thanks. These lists, and all your film fests and quickies, are honestly just the most valuable thing I could ever find. It's really hard to find good films, despite there being so many. I was never exposed to foreign films before your channel and now I know that there are really great ones, and I ended up falling in love with so many of them. Mommy, The Handmaiden, Tom on the Farm, I am Love, Call Me by Your Name, Young and Beautiful, and tons more. That's not even considering the songs I've found through your channel. It means so much to wait for so long to make these kinds of lists, because they're so high quality and rich. I'm forever indebted to you, your content, and the endless amount of time you've poured into watching great movies and pure shit movies. Thank you!!
The ironic thing about subscriptions on youtube is that the people who upload infrequently are the people it makes the most sense to subscribe to, because instead of checking their channel every day you can just be notified when they upload something new. The people who upload frequently are the people who least need subscriptions, because you already know they're going to upload every day so it doesn't even matter. But for some reason people unsubscribe to people when the subscription will alert them to something they wouldn't have otherwise known, and keep the subscription to channels that they already know will be uploading anyway.
Eh. I think of youtuber channels that put time and thought into their videos and aren't frequent as others as a special treat. They may deserve more subs overall but they will come in time. On this platform sadly, if you don't have a fuck load of videos with no thought nor effort put in to them daily, you'll be promoted more and get more subscriptions. Also people are very demanding for content. They can't just sit with one well put together video or any video in general and will go for someone else who uploads frequently and have cheap jokes and things that they know the viewer likes and will flock to their content.
+DoctorPretender This is essentially my own principle for subscribing. It makes more practical sense to me.
Hey Adam, I'm back after watching Mommy. It was an incredible film, really glad I gave it a shot. The aspect ratio's payoff was actually a really great one and the way the film's shot, edited and acted helps convey so many emotions so well it's really impressive and unique. The characters were also fantastic, I knew almost instantly I was going to enjoy the film just based off how the mom and son interacted but then the teacher was such a nice touch. Really great film, looking forward to anything this director does in the future after this. Thanks for the recommendation!
This is a great list! Enemy, force Majeure, Nightcrawler, whiplash, gone girl, raid 2, mommy.... All definitely among my favorites of 2014 as well 😀
And even though I spotted the "twist" in Mommy within the first couple of minutes, I still loved it!
Most people have never even heard of half of these, good on ya, mate
+ThuggzBunney thanks mate! I was genuinely very surprised about how many of these I had already seen as I don't really consider myself a film buff or anything. Again, thanks 😀
Sad to see "Frank" wasn't there in this list...its such an original and indie film..
ew
Take a shot every time a film on this list isn't primarily in English/is a documentary
I think I'm hammmeedereddsdddcn
I kind of wish he made seperate lists for those categories. Like I get what he's trying to do for the video but a lot of movie-watchers, especially those watching a funny UA-cam movie review show, aren't usually going to watch super indie documentaries and foreign films.
I know Americans have great difficulty with understanding the world contains more than just English, so do yourself a favor, learn to read subtitels while watching a film and a whole world will open for you. Hopefully, in the future, we don't need seperate English language versions of movies (like Stieg Larssons books), because people can't be bothered to read subtitles...
Personnally I think any kind of diversity in any top 10-or whatever list is a sign of open-mindedness and a sign that the guy/gal behind that list makes some effort to go see movies beyond what's easily and directly obtainable, and therefore may be more knowledgeable and interestig to listen to...
That's why this list is so good. Introducing lazy film watchers to good "foreign" cinema.
Came here to say, I watched all the movies based on your recommendations from 2008 - 2014 and I genuinely need to say thank you.
I put on this video, paused it, went to get wine, forgot about it, watched stupid shit on youtube, finished my wine, found this video stuck at 0:03... brb for wine.
*sees the list starts at 29*
Getting the bottle..
You're too young for wine, child.
You can't really know that can you now?
I was the 18th view and there was already one dislike. wtf?
Remember I've got a lot of people showing up from my recent Suicide Squad quickie, both new fans and new haters. Expect a few "This list is pretentious" comments.
schenectady???
+YourMovieSucksDOTorg People are so fucking stupid
Adam, this list is pretentious... Can't believe you even bother spending so much effort on making this.
probably just mad a DC movie isn't on this list
Thank you so much for compiling this together and for sharing insightful, educated and warm comments towards the films, their directors, and the actors that star in them. You have consistently been one of my favorite video creators on this site. You help me not only discover new and amazing films, but you help me see with a critical eye so I can better appreciate and understand the media and film I'm consuming.
I love so much that you put a scene in after each movie you talk about. It's wonderful.
As a french canadian, i am so so so happy to see Denis & Xavier on your list. These are directors & actors that ive been watching in random soap operas and tv shows all my life, and to see them get the attention they deserve is awesome, fucking hell Antoine Olivier Pilon is one of the best actors ive seen, on screen, ever.
Hey Adam could you please put the name of the movie you're talking about just in one of the corners, I hate having to skip back to find the name of the movie.
Actually, small correction here, Adum. I recently saw Life Itself on your recommendation, and there's a clip of Roger and Gene arguing over Full Metal Jacket, and Roger criticizes it while Gene defends it. This being contrary to your criticism of the documentarians only showing clips of Roger defending while-liked movies.
Where. THE FUCK is Unfriended?!?!?!?
It wasn't that good
+Not Important well compared to these movies
It wasn't good. Check his review of it
+Grinoldy I know. I was joking. I tried to make my comment come off as over the top. I guess I just didn't convey that very well. Lol.
+WhatIsThePorpous? Don't feel bad. I got the joke.
Does anyone have any advice on how to stay as informed as possible of these
Never-Hit-Theaters films?
I suppose looking at major film festivals such as Venice, Cannes, Toronto etc. In terms of seeing them, you might try finding any smaller independent theaters in your area.
A friend of mine has a sister who works at this small theater. Half of what they show are student and independent films. I'll check it out!
Don't be a normie
@@JFKHaircut don't be a r-word
Also, 'Enemy' and 'The Double' are based on different novels, but they happen to share the same name. 'Enemy' is based on Saramago's novel and 'The Double' is based on Dostoievski's.
Dammit, you beat me to it...
damn droppin knowledge! deep cut lol
HOLY SHIT 21 SECONDS LETS GO BABY
Edit: Updated Enemy Analysis?
26 :'(
Are you making fun of the glitch on mobile where the length of the ad becomes the length of the video sometimes?
Mobile? Im using my pc with AdBlock
thought you was dead keaton
Whiplash hit home because I dealt with a temper driven band conductor in high school. Still got to be drum major tho.
Roger Reyes im the opposite lol i made it to regional band twice with no help from him and I still didn't get drum major bc he preferred the popular football players to be drum majors lol
I just realized this is a hour. Oh. Let me get my snacks I'll be back.
Alright I'm ready.
*An hour
Yes, Birdman. Great film. I'm surprised at the amount of backlash it and it's director get sometimes, calling them both pretentious. Same goes for the Revenant, which I have my fair share of problems with, but I've heard plenty of "it doesn't matter how hard it was to make, what matters is up on screen". Well, what's up on screen is a skillfully made and well-acted movie.
Yeah, ikr. Calling a film pretencious without anything else to add is the worst form of critic
I cannot thank you enough for introducing me to Mommy. It’s become one of my absolute favourite films and I never would have discovered it had it not been for this video.
What you do truly means the world to me. Thank you so much :)
Jodorowsky's Dune made me see that not only did Jodorowsky have incredible ideas, but he also is extremely passionate about his films. Watching Jodorowsky's Dune led me to watching The Holy Mountain and now i'm a Jodorowsky fan, so thanks Adam, I probably would have never checked him out otherwise.
My Favorites:
1. Whiplash-1:02:10
2. The Grand Budapest Hotel-1:00:20
3. Gone Girl-50:40
4. Birdman-1:07:00
It makes me sad visiting your channel every time theres a new video and seeing that this channel still hasnt blown up with popularity, this is easily the best one on youtube.
Thank you for such an interesting list. I only see movies 3 or 4 times a year, but I'd like to explore some lesser known films and actively seek out new stuff.
2:10
"very unique"
No, no, no! You can't attach a modifier to unique! Unique is an absolute. You can't be "very dead," or "very gone." It's a yes/no deal.
Jeez, dude. I expected more from a guy so obsessed with little details.
Nah I'm just fucking with you. Good video.
I recently watched Submarine because of you and I loved it. Really captured how socially awkward people are in their youth.
I LOVED that movie.
Artoricle I recently recommended it (or should I say lent the DVD) to a friend and he really liked it too!
Maybe you two should date or something.
one of my all time favourites
Richard Ayoade is a fucking genius. If you haven't already, watch the IT crowd; he's great in it.
Finding Vivian Maier is on Netflix now for anyone interested
I wonder if Adam saw Song of the Sea.
Oh yeah, that one was fantastic!
He gave it a 7 on his IMDB I believe.
It's in the description
+UncleJemima57 fuck....
I know this is rather late, but I did want to thank you Adam for the quality of these lists every time they're released, as well as just the quality of your recommendations in general. I've loved movies from an early age, but I've come to see such a differing and fascinating spectrum of film over the past 4 years thanks to your meticulous watching. Please keep doing what you're doing, you're not just yelling out random movies on the internet.
Great list dude, loved it. Just one thing, The Double is actually based on the novel written by Dostoievski and Enemy on the one by José Saramago.
I've only watched the first ten minutes so far. You've sold me, I'm subscribing.
As a Filipino I never expected to see a Filipino film here as there are rarely good movies in the Philippines.
Norte the end of history is one of the best film I've ever seen. Worth the wait!!!
I know right? Too much romcoms
Diego Sulayman Pascua Exactly, and really stupid "horror" movies. I mean romcoms aren't always bad but the way they write the characters and plots are predictable. Even TV shows, they're all horrible it makes me cry :(
Heneral Luna is a great diversion to romcom.
You know it's a great Filipino film if Mon Confiado was casted
Dwayne Wade I watched Heneral Luna with my dad a few months ago and it was really good and entertaining to watch but it had some flaws. It looked like everyone in the film is new to the whole thing, though it's nice to see someone make an effort in making quality films! :D
What I like most about your top 10 of the year videos which are not actually 10 is that I can discover movies that are not advertised in the mainstream media. I work a lot and try to have a normal life while not working, so I don't actually have time to dig for poorly advertised or low budget movies. I'm not really a youtube commenter but if it makes you feel good here it goes: thanks for introducing me to Denis Villeneuve's work, he's one of my favorite directors now, Synecdoche New York, Guardians of the galaxy (which I would have never watched if it weren't for your review, not really into superhero movies), The Master, Her, the Raid 1 and 2, Zero Dark Thirty and a lot more that I can't remember right now from your top 10 lists. Also, I feel I should also thank you for not wasting my time with movies and TV shows that I know I wouldn't have liked. Also, I find your videos relaxing and comforting, which help me disconnect and relax. If there's a film I would like you to see it's Calvary (2014), I'm a subscriber for a few years now , I think you'll enjoy it. If you ever somehow come to visit Romania, maybe at TIFF (Transylvania not Toronto, International Film Festival, let's grab a beer. Cheers.
I was also wondering what he thought of Calvary. I'm guessing he has seen it and not liked it as much as it is a more well known art house indie film than a lot of the ones on this list. What did you think of it?
I was thinking that he missed it. I loved it, from the shots to the soundtrack to Brendan Gleeson's acting. It also gave me a strange feeling, somehow I managed to find myself in the priest's character, which I rarely do, so it was a very intense emotional ride . I saw it at TIFF 2014 and I was hooked from the very first minutes. Did you also like it?
+N0rt3x oh I loved it. I've it on blu Ray and all. I think it's a masterpiece and may actually the best film out of Ireland. I do wanna know what Adam wouldnt have liked about it.
Adam, did you see it? did you enjoy it?
Tobo McLukewarm he saw Calvary. He gave it a 7/10 on his IMDB
49:26 Calling it right now: The song playing in this clip will get detected by UA-cams Content ID system and it will be a bitch for Adam to get rid of the claim.
true, but adam has friends now lol
Ábel Nátán Dankó They usually do, but claims can be made afterwards as well.
Watched magical girl before it got taken off of Netflix and I am baffled, it was so great and how they revealed things through the dialogue was so intriguing and there really isn't a dull point in the movie, thanks for the recommendation
You're devotion to creating a collection of suggested films is truly remarkable. Keep it up, proud of you
I went to a strings-focused festival at the Brisbane Powerhouse, and some guy on cello ended his set by playing the main theme of Under the Skin.
I forgot who he was, but he said he was friends with Mica Levi (the composer for Under the Skin), so he wanted to play one of her pieces.
That was a very special moment of the night. I feel like I should've gotten goosebumps from the combination of my surprise at hearing the song in my life anywhere outside this video, and then also just how good it was.
Yo Adam! I've been hooked on your videos for months now, and I want to thank you for putting in the effort you do. Not only do I now have a better appreciation for films in general, but your attention to detail when dissecting plot and characters has really influenced the way I approach my own artistic endeavors. I love your Top 10 lists because of your inclusion of foreign and indie films; there are so many amazing films out there that I never would have heard about (such as Weekend and The Hunt) if it hadn't been for your recommendations. Hopefully someday I can watch a movie of your own creation, knowing that you would put as much effort into it as you do these videos. Thanks for doing what you do, and I look forward to many more hilarious and insightful reviews.
hey man, the lack of subtitles saddens me as someone who's mother language isnt english
I say we turn this comment section into a drinking game. Take a shot every time someone says the word "pretentious".
I would, but I don't want to damage my liver... XD

I want to comment a huge thanks to Adam Johnston for this series, I couldn't find my favorite movies, directors, and writers without it.
Thanks for putting the list up on IMDB!!
The scenes you used to showcase the genius of all of these films were perfect. Especially the Edward Norton scene for Birdman. Great video

Meh, didn't need sleep anyway.
its 4 am here
yay! shoutout to all the neighbors, all the +3:00 GMT people!
I have school tomorrow..
I know I am in the minority but I think Birdman is overrated, I thought it was to pretentious to be in my top 10. I agree with everything you said but there were so many things that annoyed me about the movie
Yeah. The thing for me with this movie is the actual story, yes it is a marvelous and well crafted film, but I couldn't care less about poor Michael Keaton wanted to be a recognize actor again.
+Carin Cartaphilus Meta right?
What makes it pretentious?
Never saw it.
recognized is not the issue, he is recognized, he is known about, but no one knows him. no one.
He could just make tons of money by making another birdman movie, its what people want, its not what he wants.
The stress of doing the play increases his psychosis, hallucinations, illusions of grandeur. Before the opening night he breaks down, gets drunk, tries to kill himself but cant, halucinates that the only real choice is to be a fake and be birdman again.
He seeks validation, was barred from it, will be ruined if the play fails, and breaks mentally.
(spoilers)
He even admits to hearing voices before shooting himself on opening night. He sought help, however meekly. The signs were there, but people chose to keep a distance and move on with their own lives.
Just as you do.
All movies are pretentious.
The wife and I made a movie night out of Art & Craft followed by An Honest Liar. Those two films, both individually and as a pair, spawned some excellent conversation. We would have NEVER known about them had you not included them. Enjoyed them immensely -- thank you!
